Apple has launched watchOS 27, a massive upgrade for the Apple Watch. Powered by Apple Intelligence, this new software turns the gadget into a proactive, contextual tool. It also has a brand new Siri, better health monitoring tools, and the addition of smooth one-handed controls. These improvements should be rolling out this fall.

Siri AI is getting a big boost. With Apple Intelligence, Siri AI now better understands the context of individual users while integrating a wide array of global knowledge. This progression enables seamless conversations, where users may initiate a dialogue straight from the wrist and easily pick it up via a Smart Stack if they are interrupted. All Siri interactions will be sucked into a separate Siri app, making it easier to keep track of ongoing conversations. The Digital Crown also features a dynamic app grid that shows five recommended apps from Siri, with the most used and recently used favourites taking priority, and the new Siri app front and centre.

Apple still leads the way in the world of wearable health, plugging essential gaps in reproductive health and broadening flexibility for outdoor athletes. The Health app now supports perimenopause and menopause with a new Cycle Tracking function that proactively tracks data and sends notifications about cycle abnormalities. Apple Fitness+ has debuted Strong Through Menopause, a three-week programme that blends Strength and Yoga routines to enhance mobility and reduce stress. On the rest days, a new edition of Time to Walk includes star Busy Philipps talking about her own experiences with perimenopause.

Workout Buddy has grown up to run natively on the Apple Watch, so you don’t need an iPhone to keep you motivated. It gives you real-time, data-driven insights based on your fitness history. Further, this feature will also provide support for Spanish speakers.

watchOS 27 offers a new one-handed gesture system that makes it more convenient to multitask on the go, whether you’re carrying a cup of coffee or walking your pet. New gestures for controlling the Smart Stack include a double tap (with index finger and thumb) to navigate between widgets, just one tap to launch and pick a particular widget, and a wrist flick to rapidly dismiss the widget and return to the watch face. The Smart Stack will be smarter too, surfacing hyper-contextual widgets at the right moments, such as a Parked Car tracker from Maps, a Birthday Message reminder, or prompting you to turn on Theatre Mode if you’re entering a movie theatre or concert venue.

The new version of watchOS 27 brings a number of important wallet upgrades and performance improvements. A unified Find My experience is here, combining the features for locating devices, things and people in a single application. One of the new features is the Custom Barcode Passes function, which lets users digitise various membership cards and library barcodes for convenient access via the watch’s Smart Stack feature.

In addition, the new version has improved machine learning algorithms for treadmill activity mapping. Media playback speed has also improved, allowing for faster exercise beginnings and ensuring step counts are synchronised throughout the Health and Fitness apps. These improvements improve the overall user experience and compatibility amongst watch functionalities.
