What is Connections?

Like Wordle, Connections is one of the popular daily games from the New York Times. The rules are simple. You need to find the common categories that connect the words in the grid. There are 16 words in the 4×4 grid, and each category comprises 4 words. The Yellow category is the easiest to solve, followed by Green, Blue, and Purple. Things aren’t always as straightforward, though, as the puzzle makers are not afraid to dive into niche subjects to come up with the categories. You can play the game on the official NYT website or on the NYT Games app.

Answers to NYT Connections (#1,063) Today (May 9, 2026)

Throwing in the towel? Fine, we’ll give you the answers.

Yellow Group: Episode, Season, Series, Franchise. (Units of TV Programs.)

This one’s pretty straightforward. The words are easy to spot, not a part of any misdirects, and point towards a common theme. The incremental order of the units is self-evident, too.

Green Group: Boa, Chain, Lanyard, Tie. (Things Worn Around the Neck.)

This is where things get a bit tricky. While all of these items are worn around the neck, ‘tie’, due to its property of being knotted, feels similar to the items in the next category.

Blue Group: Friendship Bracelet, Macrame, Quipu, Shoelaces. (Strings Tied in Knots.)

In our opinion, this is the toughest category in today’s puzzle. If you don’t know what macramé and quipu are, you will have a hard time finding the common theme linking these words. Tie does not belong in this list because it is not a string.

Purple Group: Conversation, Period, Puff, Think. (___ Piece.)

One of the easier purple category words we’ve seen in a while. Once you spot puff and period, it becomes easy to ‘piece’ it together.
