The Apple App Store ecosystem generated over $1.4 trillion in developer billings and sales in 2025, according to a new study by economists at Analysis Group. That is a headline number big enough to make most country GDPs look sheepish, and it comes loaded with details that tell a far more interesting story than just a large round figure.

Since 2019, the global App Store ecosystem has nearly tripled in size. For context, that growth has not been driven by Apple pocketing more commission. For more than 90 per cent of the total billings and sales the ecosystem facilitated last year, developers paid Apple absolutely no commission. The money flow overwhelmingly stayed with the builders.

Breaking Down the $1.4 Trillion

The numbers get interesting when you dig into the categories. Sales of physical goods and services accounted for the lion’s share at $1.1 trillion, fuelled by grocery delivery, food ordering, general retail, and travel apps. Developer billings and sales for digital goods and services totalled $149 billion, with games, enterprise apps, and video streaming platforms doing the heavy lifting. In-app advertising revenue came in at $151 billion, reflecting just how deeply embedded apps have become in the global advertising supply chain.

The App Store drew over 850 million average weekly users spanning 175 countries and regions. These are not passive browsers. Users are increasingly using apps to order groceries, manage health, boost workplace productivity, and stay connected with family, making apps an indispensable thread in everyday life.

AI Apps Are Sprinting Ahead of the Pack

Here is where things get truly noteworthy. More than 40 of the top 100 apps on the App Store in 2025 featured consumer-facing AI capabilities, and those apps recorded four times more billing growth than other top-100 apps without AI features. That statistic alone should tell every app developer which direction the wind is blowing.

From health and fitness apps that use on-device intelligence to offer personalised recommendations to photo and video editing tools with generative AI features to productivity platforms that automate complex workflows with cloud-based AI models, the integration of AI into everyday apps is no longer a novelty. It is the baseline expectation.

Apple’s own Foundation Models framework deserves a mention here. By giving developers access to the on-device large language model at the core of Apple Intelligence, the framework allows builders to create intelligent features that work offline, protect user privacy, and run AI inference at no additional cost. That is a meaningful competitive advantage for developers building on Apple platforms.

Regional Growth: China, the US, and Europe Lead the Surge

The geographic spread of this growth is as striking as the overall figure. Over the last six years, App Store billings and sales have more than doubled in China and more than tripled in both the United States and Europe. China led all regions with $562 billion in billings and sales, followed by the US at $453 billion, Europe at $184 billion, and Japan at $52 billion.

Local consumer habits are shaping the regional mix in fascinating ways. Travel ranked as the second-largest category of physical goods and services spending in the US, Europe, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and Brazil. In Korea, food delivery and pickup took the runner-up spot. In China, grocery and food delivery claimed second and third place, respectively. The App Store is functioning simultaneously as a global marketplace and a hyper-local commerce engine.

Agentic Coding and the Next Wave of App Development

Apple is not resting on its trillion-dollar laurels. The arrival of Xcode 26 brought agentic coding capabilities, allowing developer tools to work with greater autonomy toward a developer’s goals. Xcode 26.3 has already introduced full integration with Anthropic’s Claude Agent and OpenAI’s Codex, meaning AI agents can now collaborate throughout an entire development lifecycle, searching documentation, exploring file structures, updating project settings, and iterating through builds autonomously.

The practical consequence is that app development is becoming accessible to a far broader pool of creators. People who once lacked traditional coding skills can now build and launch apps by describing their intent to an AI agent inside Xcode. That democratisation of development is feeding directly into the App Store submission numbers and the ecosystem’s continued growth trajectory.

Apple also has nearly 20 Developer Academies operating across Brazil, Indonesia, Italy, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, and the United States, alongside Developer Centres in the US, China, India, and Singapore. A new Developer Centre in Berlin is set to open later this year, extending that infrastructure into Europe.

WWDC Timing Is No Coincidence

This announcement lands precisely one week before Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference, and that is not accidental. The $1.4 trillion figure is as much a statement of intent as it is a report of results. With over 100 new developer sessions planned and agentic coding already embedded in Xcode, Apple is signalling that the next growth phase will be built on AI, not just alongside it.

The App Store’s rise from a $500 billion ecosystem in 2019 to a $1.4 trillion one in 2025 is genuinely remarkable. Whether Apple can keep the AI growth momentum going while also managing developer relations, antitrust scrutiny, and the increasingly crowded AI tooling landscape is the real question to watch as WWDC kicks off next week.
