Facebook launches new Messenger Desktop App for users to group video call and chats on a bigger screen

The app is now available for macOS and Windows desktop versions

The Social media giant Facebook has launched a desktop version of its Messenger app for macOS and Windows so that users can video chat using their PC or laptop to stay connected with their loved ones on a larger screen. This move has been taken in view of the coronavirus pandemic. Due to this many people are forced to stay at home as many nations have already imposed lockdown to contain the spread of the virus.

The company has now announced a standalone Facebook desktop app for group video calling as well as chanting. The app will be available for both Windows and macOS versions.

The Facebook blog post said, “Today we’re launching a Messenger app for macOS and Windows so you can video chat on your computer and stay connected with friends and family all over the world. Now more than ever, people are using technology to stay in touch with the people they care about, even when physically apart. Over the past month, we saw more than a 100% increase in people using their desktop browser for audio and video calling on Messenger. Now with apps for macOS and Windows, the best of Messenger is coming to desktop, including unlimited and free group video calls.”

The Facebook desktop app allows the users to group video calls on a bigger screen to connect with their family and friends, join a workout session, etc. Unlike the Zoom app, the Facebook app supports not more than eight participants to join a video chat as to Zoom which allows more than 50 people to participate in a video call.

The user does not require anyone’s email or contact number to connect as all the Facebook friends have Messenger. The chats are also easily accessible, and you can pop in and out of the app while doing other things on your computer. A notification will be received when a new message drops so to find the chat quickly. The users can also choose to mute or snooze a notification. The new app contains all the features of Facebook Messenger on a larger screen including dark mode and GIFs.

The Facebook desktop app can now be downloaded via Microsoft store as well as the Mac app store.
