The passkeys authentication method a new passwordless sign-in has now started to roll out to Google Accounts. This method of authentication to sign in to apps and websites is even more secure than two-step verification.
Along with FIDO Alliance, Apple and Microsoft, Google announced that soon its services and products will support passwordless technology. Those who frequently forget their passwords would benefit greatly from this technology.
Ahead of Password Day, the tech giant has started to roll out the support for passkeys across Google Accounts on all major platforms. The password or 2-step verification will not be eliminated and will still work for Google Accounts as the new passwordless method will be an additional option to log in.
“So maybe by next year’s World Password Day, you won’t even need to use your password, much less remember it!” the company via blog post said.

Passkeys will be accessible for all Google Accounts. One can try it at g.co/passkeys.
According to the company, the Google Workspace accounts, administrators will soon have the option to enable passkeys for their end-users during sign-in. In comparison to passwords and other phishable forms of authentication, passkeys are much safer. They cannot be used again, are safe from server hacks, and protect users from phishing scams.
Passkeys can be used for both websites and mobile applications and are based on industry standards. They also work in a number of browser and operating system ecosystems. It is as simple as unlocking your phone. It is as simple as a face scanner or fingerprint reader or a lock PIN. Passkeys are kept and synced over the cloud on users’ phones and computers to prevent lockouts in the case of device loss.
