In a twist that few anticipated, Amazon’s much-anticipated Kindle Colorsoft has run into display issues just as it started reaching consumers. Early users of the company’s first full-colour e-reader are reporting a peculiar problem: a yellowish bar appearing at the bottom of the display. These Kindle Colorsoft display issues have prompted Amazon to suspend all shipments, leaving book lovers in limbo.

Reports of the issue began surfacing on Amazon’s product page, where disgruntled customers noted that the yellow bar occupies about 5-10% of the screen. The problem seems widespread, with several users chiming in about the unsightly stripe that’s marring their reading experience. As a result, Amazon has reportedly delayed shipments by “a week or more” to investigate and address the problem.

“We’re aware of a small number of reports from customers who see a yellow band along the bottom of the display,” Amazon spokesperson Jill Tornifoglio told The Verge. “We take the quality of our products seriously and are looking into it. If customers notice this on their device, they can reach out to our customer service team.”

Interestingly, the issue might be software-related. Amazon has informed customers that it’s working on a software fix, though no specific timeline has been provided. This has led many to speculate that the yellow bar could be a glitch rather than a hardware defect, offering a glimmer of hope to those who have already received their devices.

Adding to the confusion, Dark Mode—a feature initially advertised for the Kindle Colorsoft—is reportedly not working. Amazon has updated the product page to reflect this, directing users instead to the “Page Soft” feature, which somewhat mimics Dark Mode’s functionality.

The Kindle Colorsoft was launched with much fanfare on October 16, alongside the new Kindle Scribe, Paperwhite, and base model. Boasting a 7-inch full-colour display and a custom coating to enhance visuals, it was set to revolutionize the e-reader market. With features like text highlighting and image zooming, it aimed to be more than just an e-reader—it was poised to be a game-changer.

Now, with shipments delayed and no clear fix in sight, consumers are left waiting. U.S. customers may see their devices arrive between November 9 and 18, while those in the U.K. might have to wait until November 26. Amazon’s swift action in halting shipments suggests the company is taking the issue seriously, but the silence on an exact solution is causing some frustration.

While it’s commendable that Amazon is addressing the problem head-on, one can’t help but wonder if the rush to be first with a full-colour e-reader led to these Kindle Colorsoft problems. In the tech world, sometimes it’s better to turn the page slowly than to skip ahead and miss crucial details.
