Owning a phone number is a pre-requisite for using WhatsApp. However, the number can be your mobile number, landline, or a virtual number. As long as you can verify the number via OTP, you can register the same on the app. This process has an advantage as you can now use WhatsApp while hiding your original number.

Why would you need to hide your number while using WhatsApp?
There is nothing illegal in hiding your number while using WhatsApp. However, you must complete the OTP verification process every time you register on the app. As long as you use the app, your phone number is visible to the groups you are part of.
