Devices like smartphones and tablets are a great of knowledge and entertainment for kids. However, too much exposure to these gadgets can hamper their growth and well-being. Parents should set an upper bound to the time spent by their children on these devices. This can be done in the following simple steps on both Android and iOS devices.
Limit your child’s screen time on an Android smartphone or tablet
Google’s Family Link allows you to fix screen time limits for your child on their Android smartphone or tablet.
How to set daily device limits?
Using a parent’s device
- launch the Family Link app.
- Choose your child’s profile.
- In the ‘Daily limit’ section, tap ‘Set up’ or ‘Edit limits’.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
Using your child’s device
- Open the Settings on your child’s Android device.
- Tab ‘Digital Wellbeing & parental controls’.
- Tap ‘Daily limit’ to see the current settings
- To change the daily limit, sign in to confirm that you’re a parent.

How to set a bedtime?
Using a parent’s device
- launch the Family Link app.
- Choose your child’s profile.
- in the ‘Bedtime’, section, tap ‘Edit schedule’.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
Using your child’s device
- Open the Settings on your child’s Android device.
- Tab ‘Digital Wellbeing & parental controls’.
- Tap ‘Bedtime’ to see the current settings
- To change the Bedtime settings, sign in to confirm that you’re a parent.
Limit your child’s screen time on an iOS smartphone or tablet
With Content & Privacy Restrictions in Screen Time, you can block or limit specific apps and features on your child’s device. And restrict the settings on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch for explicit content, purchases and downloads, and privacy.
Set Content & Privacy Restrictions
- Open the Settings and tap Screen Time.
- Tap Continue and choose This is My Child’s [Device] while ‘Device’ stands for iPhone or iPad.
- Follow the on-screen instructions until you reach the Parent Passcode.

- Enter the Passcode. You’ll be prompted to enter your Apple ID and password.
- Select Content & Privacy Restrictions.
- Enter your passcode and turn on Content & Privacy. Set a passcode that’s different from what you use to unlock your device.
- To modify or disable the passcode on your child’s device, go to Settings > Screen Time > [child’s name]. Now, tap Change Screen Time Passcode or Turn Off Screen Time Passcode. You’ll need to approve the modifications with Touch ID, Face ID, or passcode.
