There are two ways in which Alexa can control these smart devices. Some devices directly get connected with Alexa and are ready to be operated through it while others have to be first connected with a smart home hub which then connects to Alexa. In order to connect your smart home device with Amazon Echo Alexa, your smart home devices need to be set up and running. You would need to verify whether your smart home devices are compatible with Alexa or not.  Step 1: Make sure both your Amazon Echo device as well as the smart device you want to connect with it are on. 

Step 2: Open the Alexa app and go to More > Add a Device.

Step 4: Select the brand and follow the on-screen instructions.
