Ask.com has shut down after 25 years of operation

Despite being in the market for a lengthy period, Ask.com failed to remain competitive against the massive dominance of Google Search.

On May 1, 2026, Ask.com officially ceased its search operations, marking a significant milestone in the internet search domain. The closing concludes a 25-year heritage for Ask.com, a prominent rival to Google Search in the past. Its parent firm, IAC, announced the closure as part of a wider strategic reorganisation. This event symbolises the end of a search alternative that once had a chance, but also shows the progress and consolidation in the online search market – Ask.com was one of the first recognisable brands.

Ask.com, formerly known as Ask Jeeves, has officially closed down. The platform was launched in 1996 with the original goal of answering casual questions in natural language. In 2005, the site was bought by IAC, which in turn rebranded it and shifted its emphasis to a more simple Q&A style by 2010.

After 20 years of operation, IAC has announced the termination of its service, noting that every wonderful journey must finally come to an end. The business thanked the engineers, designers and teams that helped build the platform. IAC also thanked the millions of users who turned to the site to meet their information requirements. Ask.com no longer had the resources to compete with Google and was no longer a meaningful part of IAC’s portfolio of companies, said IAC Chairman Barry Diller.
