COVID-19: Gaming traffic spikes in Italy, Quarantined kids downloading ‘Fortnite’ and ‘Call of Duty’

Italy is under lockdown owing to the increasing cases of global pandemic Corona Virus

As Italy is under siege owing to the increasing cases of global pandemic Corona Virus, public life has come to a complete halt. Schools, bars and restaurants, theatres, gyms have been shut down till further notice. However, quarantined children are entertaining themselves by downloading and engaging in multi-player online games like ‘Fortnite’ and ‘Call of Duty’.

As per a Bloomberg report, Telecom Italia SpA’s national network registered a surge of more than 70% of Internet traffic over its landline network, with a major contribution from online gaming such as ‘Fortnite’ and ‘Call of Duty’.

It is believed that there could be a further rise in gaming traffic as millions of children download the latest 25-gigabyte update at once, the report added. Further, refreshing the game also adds to rising gaming traffic.

In addition to this, it is likely that there will be a rise in usage of online video streaming platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime as people are left with no option to go and watch their favourite movies at the theatres.

At the same time, majority of office goers are working from home. Meanwhile, Italians are also taking to Twitter to share how they are doing away with boredom by playing musical instruments and signing songs from their balconies.

At the time of writing this report, Microsoft Bing COVID-19 tracker has revealed that the total number of cases reported in Italy comes to 27,980 with 2,749 recovered cases and 2,158 fatal cases. However, the global status of corona virus cases has reached 182,559 with 79,852 recoveries and 7,161 fatalities.
