Google Maps is getting a brand-new feature called ‘immersive view,’ which gives you a whole new way to explore. You’ll be able to see and feel a place before you go, thanks to advances in artificial intelligence which will provide a more detailed Street View and aerial images. Google announced the new mode at its I/O 2022 consumer keynote. ‘Immersive view’ makes use of Google Cloud to provide users with a digital view.

Google at I/O 2022 introduced a whole new way to explore with Maps today, thanks to advances in computer vision and AI that allow us to combine billions of Street View and aerial images to create a rich, digital model of the world. With the new immersive view, users will be able to get a feel for a neighbourhood, landmark, restaurant, or popular venue before ever setting foot inside.

If you are planning a trip to a place and want to know the best places to visit and eat. You can virtually fly over the place with a quick search to see the neighbourhood and stunning architecture of places. You can use the time slider to see what the area looks like at different times of day and in different weather conditions, as well as see where the busy spots are, thanks to Google Maps‘ helpful information layered on top.

Google Maps Immersive view is compatible with almost any phone or device. Later this year, it will be available in Los Angeles, London, New York, San Francisco, and Tokyo, with more cities to follow.

Google Maps is also bringing eco-friendly routing to more locations, including Europe. It was recently launched in the United States and Canada, and Google claims that it has been used to travel 86 billion miles, saving over half a million metric tonnes of carbon emissions.

Moreover, Live View is also being expanded to developers through the new ARCore Geospatial API. Live View uses augmented reality to display helpful arrows and directions right on top of your surroundings. It’s especially useful in congested indoor areas like airports, shopping malls, and train stations. Google Maps can direct you to your destination in a matter of seconds thanks to our AI-based global localization technology.
