The popular video-sharing app TikTok is not only presently trending in India but it has gained equal popularity in other regions across the world. Owned by Byte-dance company, which also owned a similar app named Musical.ly have seen a phenomenal rise by gaining over 5.4 Crore users in India and globally but a new comment by an American website Reddit’s CEO has evoked a new controversy by calling the popular video app “fundamentally parasitic”.
Reddit’s CEO and co-founder Steve Huffman has passed some harsh comments on the popular video-sharing app TikTok at an event. During a panel discussion with former public policy exec Elliot Schrage and former Facebook VP of Product Sam Lessin Huffman has urged Silicon Valley startups to learn something from the app and calling it fundamentally parasitic.
Huffman commented, “Maybe I’m going to regret this, but I can’t even get to that level of thinking with them, because I look at that app as so fundamentally parasitic, that it’s always listening, the fingerprinting technology they use is truly terrifying, and I could not bring myself to install an app like that on my phone.” According to him, the app snoops on the user’s data and he said, “I actively tell people, ‘Don’t install that spyware on your phone.”
According to a report, the CEO made the controversial statement in front of a large group of Silicon Valley investors and entrepreneurs gathered for a one-day conference called “Social 2030”.
During the panel discussion, the Video Sharing app TikTok was the prime focus of discussion right from the beginning to the end. TikTok spokesperson said to USA Today, “These are baseless accusations made without a shred of evidence.”
TikTok has finally managed to turn up as the most-downloaded app in January 2020 leaving behind social media app WhatsApp that is owned by Facebook. The video-sharing app last year also hit 1.5 billion app downloads mark on App Store and Google Play Store and most of the downloads were made from India alone.
In January the app was to installed 7.7 million times in the US to emerge as the most-downloaded non-game app followed by Disney+ as the second most-downloaded non-game app in the US during January 2020. In India, TikTok has gained so much popularity with 277.6 million downloads in November 2019 itself as per a report.
