After a recent credential stuffing attack, Spotify has reportedly started resetting the passwords of over 300 million accounts that were targeted. The action has been taken after vpnMentor’s research team delved deep into an Elasticsearch database comprising of more than 380 million records that even contained login credentials as well as other user data being validated against the Spotify service.
According to vpnMentor’s research team led by Noam Rotem and Ran Locar, The size of database was 72GB database and it contained over 380 million records. However, there is no source of origin of the database and how the fraudsters were targeting Spotify. It is believed that the hackers were likely using these stolen login credentials from another platform, app, or website to access Spotify accounts.
The vpnMentor further notified about the discovery and investigation timeline. This was discovered on July 3, 2020 (reviewed on July 9th) and Spotify was contacted on July 9th, 2020. The action took place between July 10 and July 21. It also confirmed that the database belonged to a group or individual using it to defraud Spotify and its users.
