Podcast ratings have the potential to generate immediate interest because they will be the first chance to attract new listeners.

Spotify has announced the addition of a rating feature for podcasts for which the users will be able to rate podcasts with up to five stars. The new rating system will be added to the company’s existing Podcast Charts recommendation system. With the addition of the new feature, the company will be able to improve podcast discovery on the music streaming platform.

While announcing the feature Spotify said, “starting today, we’re beginning to roll out ratings for podcasts: a star rating system that improves podcast discoverability by highlighting shows’ popularity. Podcast ratings give listeners an opportunity to support their favourite podcast shows and enable a two-way feedback loop between creator and listener.”

Fans will be able to rate a show on a 1–5 star scale after listening to it. The average rating, along with the total number of ratings received, will be publicly displayed on the podcast’s show page on Spotify.

Spotify made it easier for listeners to decide when to try out a new podcast and see if it will become their new favourite by introducing ratings. Podcast ratings have the potential to generate immediate interest because they will be the first chance to attract new listeners. From any show page in the Spotify app (iOS and Android), they can simply tap to rate a show on a scale from one to five stars, as long as they’ve listened to at least 30 seconds of an episode.

Listeners will be able to add their rating right from the show page on Spotify—by either tapping on the rating directly or the three-dot menu below the podcast cover art. Creators will be able to check their rating at any time from their Spotify show page, once it’s received 10 ratings.

Ratings also provide creators with a big-picture view of how they’re doing, which they can then use to their advantage by soliciting more specific feedback via Spotify Q&As and off-platform social conversations. Creators can also build their ratings by encouraging their fans to rate them on Spotify.

Here are just a few ideas that can be tailored to incorporate your show’s voice and tone:

  • “Thank you so much for listening to [show name]. Make sure to rate us everywhere you listen to podcasts, including Spotify.”
  • “Thank you for listening to our show. If you like what you’re hearing, make sure to rate our show on Spotify.”
  • “Do you like this show? Let us know by leaving us a rating on our Spotify show page.”

As a result, this new rating feature will be available in nearly every market where Spotify podcasts are available. Users will begin to receive it in the coming days.
