If your morning coffee break just got hijacked by a stubborn purple tile, you are not alone. NYT Strands answers today are giving plenty of regular solvers a real workout, and puzzle number 902, published on August 22, 2026, has sent people scrambling for a nudge in the right direction. Today’s board has a scenic streak running through it, and once you spot the pattern, the rest of the grid practically climbs into place on its own.

Strands has quietly become one of the New York Times’ most addictive word games, sitting somewhere between Wordle’s simplicity and Connections’ brain teasing structure. Every puzzle hides a theme, a handful of theme words, and one spangram that stretches from one side of the board to the other. Miss the theme and you will wander the grid for ten minutes. Spot it, and the whole thing unravels in under a minute.

What Today’s Strands Theme Actually Means

Today’s theme is called Peak Americana, and the in-game hint reads “Time to climb.” That is the Times’ polite way of telling you the puzzle is hiding something related to elevation, and specifically, some of the most recognizable ranges scattered across the United States. If you have ever driven through Colorado, hiked in Vermont, or watched a nature documentary about misty Appalachian ridgelines, today’s board will feel oddly familiar.

Clue Words to Unlock Today’s Hints (No Full Spoilers Yet)

Strands rewards patience. Every time you find three words of four letters or more that are not part of the official answer list, the game unlocks a hint highlighting one of the theme words. Here are a few non-theme words worth hunting for on today’s board.

  • SCARE
  • SCAR
  • GOON
  • MOUNT
  • MOUNTS
  • ACRE

Any word of four letters or longer works toward a hint, so do not worry if the path you find through the letters looks slightly different from this one.

NYT Strands Answers for August 22, 2026 (Spoilers From Here)

Fair warning, this is where the actual answers live. If you would rather figure it out yourself, this is your exit ramp.

Today’s non-spangram theme words are GREEN, ROCKY, SMOKY, WHITE, CASCADE and SAWTOOTH. Every single one is a real mountain range in the United States, which is a nice reminder of how much actual geography sneaks into a puzzle that looks like it is just about vocabulary.

A quick reality check on each one, because context tends to stick better than raw letters.

  • The Rocky Mountains run nearly 3,000 miles from British Columbia down into New Mexico, forming the spine of North America.
  • The Great Smoky Mountains straddle Tennessee and North Carolina and get their name from the natural blue-grey mist that settles over the ridges.
  • The White Mountains in New Hampshire are home to Mount Washington, once famous for recording some of the fastest wind speeds ever measured at a surface weather station.
  • The Green Mountains cut through Vermont and are actually where the state gets its name, from the French “verts monts.”
  • The Cascade Range stretches from British Columbia into Northern California and includes some genuinely active volcanoes, Mount Rainier and Mount St. Helens among them.
  • The Sawtooth Range in Idaho is smaller in scale but well known for its jagged, saw-blade shaped granite peaks.

Today’s Spangram, Explained

The spangram, the word that ties the whole theme together and touches both sides of the board, is MOUNTAINRANGE. To trace it, start at the M sitting at the bottom of the far left vertical row, then wind your path up and across the grid, almost like you are tracing the silhouette of an actual mountain range. Fitting, given the theme.
