The Dark Mode feature on WhatsApp has now officially landed on both Android as well as iOS platforms. The much-awaited feature has been under testing since last year. Now the company has finally rolled out this new feature for its users across the globe.

The dark mode is now available for iPhone and Android. The company rolled out this feature via a new update which gives a fresh new look to its platform. According to the company this feature aims to reduce eye strain under low light environments or when the lights are turned off. “And we hope it helps prevent those awkward moments where your phone lights up the room,” the company stated while announcing the new feature to its users.

The company said in its blog post that while designing this feature they kept few things in mind such as they wanted to choose such colours, which will minimize eye fatigue and choose those colours that are closer to the system defaults on iPhone and Android respectively. “We wanted to help users easily focus their attention on each screen. We did this by using colour and other design elements to make sure the most important information stands out.” the company explained in its blog post.

To recall, the company released WhatsApp Android beta testers via Google Play in January in 2019, as a part of the v2.20.13 update. For iOS users, v2.20.20 (2.20.30.13) was rolled out for beta testers earlier last month. Yesterday the company changed its display pictures across all its social media channels. The company’s logo was seen against a black background which is now its profile picture on Facebook, Twitter as well as Instagram.

In order to introduce a new theme to its platform the social media chatting app also shared a video of how the dark theme will help its users in their daily routine.

Whatsapp users on Android 10 and iOS 13 can turn on the dark mode by enabling it in system settings. Users on Android 9 and below can go into WhatsApp Settings > Chats > Theme > select ‘Dark’.
