Oppo finds a way to hide selfie camera in smartphone display

Smartphone companies have been, for a while, hiding front cameras in order to enlarge the screen space. For instance, Vivo opted for a pop-up selfie camera for the Nex and a dual-display setup for its Nex Dual Display. Oppo hid its selfie snappers in a camera slider in its Find X, and Xiaomi and Huawei followed its lead.

Recently, Samsung housed the selfie camera in the screen of its A8s smartphone, and Honor View 20 and Huawei Nova 4 followed closely. However, the selfie camera is still very visible in this case.

However, Chinese smartphone brand Oppo may have given us the solution that we need for thing kind of a display. The company has gone a step ahead and put the camera app over the camera hole. If you put the camera app icon over the camera hole, then the punch hole camera can be hidden. This can be seen in a patent that has been filed by the company that appeared on Let’s Go Digital.

The icon is designed in a way that the camera hole becomes a part of the icon, and shows the lens arrangement in real-time. Also, swiping the homescreen will only let users swap apps other than camera to switch their places. The camera app will always stay in the same place. However, we must mention that the punch hole camera can be seen while watching videos.

With this, we could get a camera hole that might be hidden in more affordable phones. As of now, we do not know if this feature will retain the camera app on top of the display continuously. We should also mention that even LG has implemented a similar feature on the V10 with a secondary display that shows app shortcuts continuously.

Another very exciting news from Oppo is that the Chinese smartphone brand is expected to showcase a foldable smartphone at the upcoming Mobile World Congress 2019, which is scheduled to begin on February 25. This smartphone is expected to have 10X hybrid zoom technology and it will sport a triple camera setup on its back panel.
