What is Screen Distance?

The idea behind Screen Distance is simple. Your iPhone constantly monitors the distance between the display and your face, sending you a notification when you spend a lot of time holding the device close to your eyes. It does this by tapping into the power of the True Depth camera. This camera is nestled inside the notch/Dynamic Island on the display. ‘True Depth’ is a collective term used for the front camera, infrared camera, dot projector and other proximity sensors.

Apple does not mention how long the display needs to be closer to your face for the Screen Distance notification to pop up. In our experience, it is between 5-10 minutes. The company does mention that it considers anything above 30cm (or 12 inches) to be the ideal distance between the display and your eyes. Anything less than that starts the timer for the Screen Distance notification to kick in.

Sony’s new entry-level wireless earbuds are priced at Rs 4,990 and go up against the likes of the OnePlus Buds 3, CMF Buds Pro 2, and JBL Tune 245 NC. Sony has an immense reputation in the TWS category, boasting the gargantuan WF-1000XM5 earbuds in its catalogue. The WF-C510 earbuds seek to bring the signature Sony sound profile to a more affordable category. However, players like OnePlus, Nothing, and CMF have proven that you need something more than an impressive soundstage to compete in this cut-throat segment. So how does Sony’s entry-level TWS rank when it comes to design, form factor, and connectivity features? We used the Sony WF-C510 for a week to get to the bottom of these questions, here is our review of the TWS.

Sony’s dedication to eliminating plastic packaging even from its entry-level products is commendable but the lack of a USB Type-C charging cable inside the box is slightly disappointing.

The charging case has a compact, pill-shaped design, which makes it easy to slip inside pockets. The case doesn’t occupy a lot of space and is very easy to grab and pull out. The plastic body has a matte finish that lends it a premium in-hand feel. The ‘Sony’ branding is etched on the top of the lid. A wide notch separates the lid from the rest of the body, making it easier to open with one hand. The LED notification light is placed right below this notch. The pairing button lies next to the hinge.

The stem-less in-ear design of the Sony WF-C510 earbuds is what makes it stand out in this category. We’re big fans of this form factor as it offers a very snug fit that doesn’t require periodic adjustments. You can freely move your arms without having to worry about dislodging your earbuds. The compactness of the buds has a role to play in their superior fit as well. We did not experience major ear fatigue even after wearing these earbuds for multiple hours at a stretch.

Sony WF-C510 TWS Review: Design

Instead of a touch panel, the WF-C510 has physical buttons for media playback control. This eliminates the annoying pauses caused by accidental touches. The physical buttons can be customised to pause media playback, alter the volume, skip tracks, trigger the voice assistant, pick up or hang up calls, toggle the transparency mode, and more.

The Sony WF-C510 earbuds are rated IPX4 for dust and water resistance. This makes them ideal to wear during long hikes and workout sessions. The earbuds remain unfazed by sweat and continue putting up a crushing performance. However, we wouldn’t recommend wearing them while it’s raining.

With Bluetooth 5.3 onboard, the Sony WF-C510 earbuds connect easily to any smartphone. If you can’t find the TWS in discoverable devices, put the earbuds back in the case and long-press the pairing button. Each earbud is equipped with a 6mm driver. The TWS has a frequency response range between 20Hz and 20,000Hz. There are 2 audio codecs on offer – SBC and AAC.

During the review period, we used the Sony WF-C510 to listen to an exhaustive range of genres including pop, folk, grunge, and classic rock. The soundstage produced by these earbuds is lush and balanced. The low-end frequencies are tuned nicely and do not overpower the mids and the highs. The level of detail in the mix is quite satisfying. While playing UFO’s Lights Out, the earbuds relayed the crunching guitar riffs and crisp clapper hits with expert precision. However, we feel like the vocal frequencies could have been dialled higher for the overall output to ‘pop’ more.

Sony WF-C510 Review: Performance

The lack of Active Noise Cancellation is one of the biggest misses on this TWS. There is no excuse for skipping this feature when it is considered standard for this price category. Even the affordable OnePlus Nord Buds 3 (priced at Rs 2,299) can nullify up to 32dB of surrounding sound. The WF-C510 can passively tune out some noise due to its airtight fit. Sony’s companion app for the TWS has a handy transparency mode which can be deployed when you want to engage in a conversation or want to be more aware of your surroundings.

The Sony Sound Connect app also lets you choose from a range of equaliser profiles. These include Bright, Excited, Mellow, Relaxed, Vocal, Treble Boost, Bass Boost, Speech, and Manual. You can set up and save 2 customised equaliser profiles on the app. This companion app gives you access to special features like 360 Reality Audio, Multi-point Connection, and DSEE.

The calling experience provided by the WF-C510 is quite satisfactory in indoor conditions. The earbuds do a good job of picking up the voice of the speaker, suppressing the ambient noise, and relaying it to the listener without losing any details. The earbuds hold up quite well in outdoor conditions as well, but the call quality drops rapidly in busy streets and loud markets.

The compact form factor of the TWS means that you have some compromises on the battery front. The earbuds have a battery life of 11 hours with additional 11 hours in the case. We used the Sony WF-C510 for 3-4 hours every day during the week-long review period. By the 6th day, the charging case ran out of battery and had to be plugged into the charger. It took us a little over 90 minutes to fully charge the device. While the battery life of this TWS is remarkably lower than its competitors, we think it’s worth the tradeoff for a more compact and portable form factor. Charging the TWS once every 5-6 days isn’t a deal breaker for us.

Verdict

The Sony WF-C510 is a no-nonsense TWS that gets the essential aspects just right. Its minimal approach to design is refreshing and practical. You can easily carry this TWS in your pocket without worrying about them taking up too much space or offering any discomfort. The stemless design of the earbuds facilitates an exquisite in-ear fit.

The new functionality allows users to create a list to categorise certain groups and chats for better organisation. However, this feature is slightly different from chat filters in that users can segregate their messages. By offering a more efficient means of managing discussions, this feature seeks to improve user experience and lessen clutter.

WhatsApp is rolling out a custom list feature globally and is expected to land on your smartphones in the upcoming weeks. The upcoming feature is built upon the chat filters that were introduced earlier this year allowing users to find messages easily under three categories: All, Unread, and Groups. With WhatsApp’s custom chat lists users will be able to filter chats with custom categories as per their liking.

“Whether that’s a list for family, work or your local neighbourhood, Lists help you focus on the conversations that are most important when you need them,” the company via blog post said.

When the feature arrives on your devices you will be able to create and edit your lists easily by tapping the + in the filter bar at the top of your Chats tab, or edit by long-pressing a list.

You can add both groups and individual chats to a list, just as you would with your ‘favourites’, and any list you make will display in the filter box.

Lists allow users to set up unique categories, such as “Family,” “Work,” or “Friends,” and quickly filter chats to identify the ones that are most important at any given time.

Chat Filters, on the other hand, let users separate messages into three categories that may be chosen with a single tap: All, Unread, and Groups. With the update the company has added faster loading, better quality and new speed controls to videos, last edit timestamps, attaching media to sent messages, increased limits for mini apps, new monetization options for developers – and much more.

As per Telegram’s latest blog post the video player now automatically picks a quality level based on your connection for newly posted videos to big channels, saving data and loading videos faster. Users can also manually pick their chosen quality level: High, Medium, or Low.

On iOS Telegram update has also made it easy to switch to Picture-in-Picture Mode: simply swipe up to continue viewing while browsing your messages. According to the company, Swiping down still ends the video. To change video quality, tap the ⚙️ gear symbol in the player.

Moreover the chat app now also allows large channel owners to post better-quality videos without pre-processing them. The platform optimises each uploaded video for users and compresses it in various qualities. Android tablets primarily operate in the midrange segment apart from one big exception – the Samsung Galaxy Tab S Series. The ‘Ultra’ variant in this lineup is typically the one you should go for if you’re interested in replacing your laptop with a sleek slate. Samsung’s flagship is a clear upgrade from its Android peers in terms of hardware, photography skills, and performance. This is also the reason why they cost north of Rs 1 lakh. This year’s Galaxy Tab S10 Ultra has not made many changes to the winning formula of its S9 counterpart. It still has the familiar 16:10 aspect ratio and the massive 14.6-inch AMOLED display. However, it now rocks a MediaTek chipset under its hood, instead of the classic Snapdragon processor. What does this mean in terms of performance? Is Samsung’s flagship tablet still a viable alternative to a laptop? We used the tablet for a week to find the answers to these questions. Here is our review of the Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 Ultra.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 Ultra Review: Design and Display

Here’s what you get inside the Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 Ultra’s retail package:

The Galaxy Tab S10 Ultra looks identical to last year’s Tab S9 Ultra. Not much separates the two tablets in terms of design. The S10 Ultra has a premium aluminium back with a matte finish. This matte finish extends to the rails of the tablet as well. The top end of the back panel has a magnetic strip to hold the S Pen. We would have preferred its placement on one of the edges as it would bypass the need to turn the tablet and spot the strip every time you need to dock the stylus. This process becomes more intuitive as you become familiar with the device, but after a week we still struggled to get it right on the first try.

The two cameras and the LED lie right next to the magnetic strip. The layout of this dual-camera array is in line with Samsung’s design philosophy for its smartphones. The upper edge of the tablet houses the power button, volume rocker, SIM tray (for the 5G model), and two microphones. The four-speaker grilles are arranged along the vertical edges. The USB Type-C port finds its way to the left edge. The magnetic contact points for the keyboard are placed on the bottom edge. The tablet is just 5.4mm thick and can be easily slipped into skins and backpacks.

The star of the show is the massive 14.6-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display. This display has a 120Hz refresh rate and supports HDR10+. Surrounding this display are thin bezels. A small notch on the bezel along the top edge houses the two front-facing cameras. While we like the aesthetic that the slim bezels lend to the display, the accidental touches that come with it can be a tad annoying. While holding the tablet with two hands (which is the majority of the time), the palms tend to wander towards the display. This could have been fixed with slightly thicker bezels. Not to mention, it would have evened out the notch as well.

If you intend to use this tablet with a keyboard attachment, the bezel situation should not bother you. The tablet weighs 723g, which is another reason to get the keyboard cover (priced at a whopping Rs 27,000). Holding the tablet for a long period of time can get tiring.

The touch response and vividness of the Tab S10 Ultra’s display are unmatched by any other Android tablet. If you’re making the switch from an LCD tablet, the difference in image quality will be noticeable right off the bat. The colours produced by this panel are rich and the blacks are deep. This tablet even blows most laptops in this price range out of the water. We used it as our primary media device for the week and were amazed by the viewing experience it had to offer. The new anti-reflective coating on the display does wonders for the viewing experience and outdoor usage.

We streamed a bunch of titles across OTT platforms like Netflix, Disney+ Hotstar, Prime Video, and more. The dynamic range of colours and the details ingrained in the images left us astounded. The cherry on top of the cake was the loud yet balanced audio output from the stereo speakers. We never once felt the need to connect the tablet to a TWS or a Bluetooth speaker. Our only gripe with the display is that it tends to attract fingerprints rather quickly. The smudges become apparent whenever a scene cuts to black.

Let’s talk about the internals of Samsung’s newest flagship tablet. The Galaxy Tab S10 Ultra ditches the flagship Snapdragon chipset on its predecessor for a bold move towards the MediaTek Dimensity 9300+ SoC. We ran the Geekbench 6 app on the tablet and it returned a single-core score of 2,086 points and a multi-core score of 6,953 points.

When it comes to everyday use, the Dimensity 9300+ SoC can go toe to toe with Qualcomm’s finest. During the week-long review period, we used the Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 Ultra for a range of tasks including emailing, texting, web browsing, photo & video editing, document editing, media playback, and video calling. The tablet kept pace with the tasks without breaking a sweat. It did warm up slightly while editing a video clip, but we did not come across any unwanted stutters.

The gaming performance on this tablet is a bit of a mixbag. We should preface this by saying that the Tab S10 Ultra isn’t designed to be a gaming device. The large screen size should give this away. Holding this tablet can best be described as holding a laptop screen. The touch controls can be hard to reach, requiring a fair bit of customisation at times. This is where using an external keyboard comes in clutch.

We played titles like Call of Duty and Asphalt Legends Unite at the maximum graphics settings. We were pleased with the smooth gameplay and the immersive experience that comes with playing smartphone games on a larger screen. The Dimensity 9300+ does a good job of delivering the graphics and maintaining the frame rate but needs to do better when it comes to thermal management. The back panel of the tablet was noticeably warm after 45 minutes of gameplay.

The Android 14-based One UI 6.1 handles business on the software front. This year, Samsung has paid special attention to AI features and thoughtfully integrated them across the interface without robbing the user of the traditional ‘One UI’ experience. In fact, if you’re not a fan of AI, it is easy to ignore these tools as they do not occupy the centre stage on the tablet.

We’ve talked about Galaxy AI features like Circle to Search, Photo Assist, Interpreter, Browsing Assist, and others before. If you aren’t aware of these tools, read our review of the Galaxy S24 Ultra. In this review, we will focus on the more recent features that were added to the Galaxy AI suite. Samsung’s new Sketch to Image feature works amazingly on the Galaxy Tab S10 Ultra, thanks to the handy S Pen. The low latency of the pen ensures a smooth sketching experience. It can detect the different pressure levels and produce results accordingly. The sketches can be turned into different styles of images (illustrations, pop art, etc.). The results are not breathtaking and easily recognisable as AI-generated. However, it makes for a cool party trick.

Our best utilisation of this feature is in Samsung’s native photo editor. You can draw an object in your images and Galaxy AI brings it to life. It did a great job of bringing animals to life in the images but sometimes struggled with everyday objects like a cricket bat or a football. While the results can be hit or miss, we do like the idea.

Moving on, the 11,200mAh battery pack on this tablet delivers a solid performance. We were able to push the battery life to two whole days on moderate usage. While binging movies on the tablet, we were forced to plug in the charger within a day. On average, we got 7-8 hours of screen time on the S10 Ultra. With 45W charging support on board, it took us almost 2 hours to fully charge the tablet.

The dual camera setup on the back panel of the Galaxy Tab S10 Ultra comprises a 13MP primary shooter and an 8MP ultrawide lens. Up front, two 12MP sensors are housed within a small notch. These sensors are tasked with taking wide and ultrawide selfies.

For a tablet, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 Ultra puts up a good camera performance. In outdoor daylight conditions, the primary 13MP camera takes vivid pictures with a lot of detail. While these images may be slightly compared to the results from a smartphone’s primary camera, they do a good job on this tablet. The dynamic range showcased by the images is good and the contrast levels are balanced. Images taken with the ultrawide camera are a tad softer but their colour profile redeems the drop in details.

The two front-facing cameras take good selfies and keep the tone and texture correction to a minimum. We primarily used these cameras for video calls and online meetings. They did a good job of relaying the video footage in varying lighting conditions. The ultrawide camera comes in quite handy when you need to fit multiple people into the frame. The front and rear shooters are capable of recording 4K videos at 30fps.

Verdict

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 Ultra is a phenomenal Android tablet that brings top-of-the-line specs and unmatched hardware together. Samsung’s One UI 6 OS makes sure that the screen real estate doesn’t go to waste. With an external keyboard, you can use this tablet as an alternative to your laptop. Samsung DeX support makes this quite easy as it does a stellar job of recreating the PC experience on the tablet.

While the inclusion of the Dimensity 9300+ chipset over the standard Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor may have garnered some criticism, we enjoyed what MediaTek’s top-shelf SoC had to offer. It handled routine tasks without any hiccups and had no problem firing on all cylinders while editing photos and videos. S Pen support is another great thing about this tablet. Apart from taking quick notes and drawing sketches, it can be used to carry out quick functions like taking selfies, pausing media playback, and magnifying the text on the screen.

The OnePlus 13 and iQOO 13 both have 6.82-inch OLED panels with unique design elements. The OnePlus 13 has a BOE X2 OLED 8T LTPO screen with a micro-quad-curved design, 2K resolution, 120Hz refresh rate, and 4500 nits peak brightness. It offers Dolby Vision and 2160Hz PWM dimming for an enhanced visual experience. The iQOO 13 has a BOE Q10 OLED display with a flat design, a faster refresh rate, a peak brightness of 4500 nits, Android’s first OLED circular polarised light eye protection technology, 2592Hz PWM dimming, and a self-developed Q2 display chip. The OnePlus 13 includes an alert slider, whilst the iQOO 13 has a halo light as its differentiating feature.

The OnePlus 13 and iQOO 13 are powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite processor, LPDDR5x RAM, and UFS 4.0 storage. The OnePlus 13 and iQOO 13 are Android 15 smartphones running ColorOS 15 and OriginOS 5, respectively. The OnePlus 13 features a 6,000mAh battery with 100W wired, 50W magnetic wireless, and 10W reverse wireless charging, whilst the iQOO 13 has a slightly bigger 6,150mAh battery with 120W cable charging but no wireless charging options.

The OnePlus 13 features a 50-megapixel LYT-808 primary camera with OIS, a 50-megapixel Samsung S5KJN5 ultra-wide and macro camera, and an OIS-enabled 50-megapixel LYT-600 periscope telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom and 120x digital zoom. It also includes Hasselblad camera optimisations. The iQOO 13 features three cameras: a 50-megapixel Sony IMX921 primary camera, a 50-megapixel Samsung S5KJN1 ultra-wide lens, and a 50-megapixel IMX816 telephoto lens. The OnePlus 13 and iQOO 13 both contain a 32-megapixel front-facing camera, with the former employing a Sony IMX615 sensor and the latter using a GalaxyCore GC32E1.
