What is Connections?

Connections is one of the most popular word games from The New York Times, only trailing behind Wordle. The rules of the game are simple. You are presented with a 16-word grid where you’re supposed to find the entries that share something in common. There are a total of 4 groups, each consisting of 4 letters, that you must find. The Yellow group is the easiest to spot, followed by Green, Blue, and Purple. Sometimes, there are a couple of red herrings to throw you off and make the puzzle more interesting. You can play Connections in the NYT Games app or on the NYT website.

Answers to NYT Connections (#1,156) Today (August 10, 2026)

Close to waving the white flag? Fine, we’ll give you the answers.

  • 🟡Yellow Group: Any Old How, At Random, Helter-Skelter, Willy Nilly. (Haphazardly)

There was one sneaky red herring in today’s grid. ‘Willy Nilly’ goes along with ‘Will Call’, ‘Bill To’, and ‘Billy Goat’ as they are all casual nicknames associated with ‘William’. If you managed to steer clear of this misdirect, the Yellow group would have come easily to you.

  • 🟢Green Group: Mail Delivery, Mobile Ticket, Print-At-Home, Will Call. (Ways To Receive Event Tickets)

If you opt for mail delivery, the physical tickets are mailed to you at home. A mobile ticket is an e-ticket with a QR code or bar code. Print-at-home implies making a physical copy of a soft document. ‘Will call’ is a service that lets you pick up the tickets on the spot.

  • 🔵Blue Group: Balance Due, Bill To, Order Number, Unit Price. (Sections On An Invoice)

Today’s Blue group was the easiest of the bunch. All of these things can be found on an invoice.

  • 🟣Purple Group: Billy Goat, Colonel Sanders, Doctor Strange, The Devil. (Famous Goatees)

The Purple group today had the classic case of ‘seems obvious in hindsight’. If you were able to solve it without any help, you’re a real pro.

Answers to yesterday’s puzzle (#1,155, August 9, 2026)

  • 🟡Yellow Group: Change Tack, Course-Correct, Recalibrate, Shift Gear. (Take A Different Approach)
