Now you are going to enjoy talking to ChatGPT, as it will speak and listen at the same time, like an individual. Yes, OpenAI has introduced a new voice model, GPT-Live, that can engage in real-life human-AI conversations. The capability is rolling out globally immediately and is now powering ChatGPT Voice.

OpenAI has announced the rollout of two new voice models of GPT-Live – GPT-Live-1 and GPT-Live-1 mini – that can listen and talk simultaneously in real time. The company also plans to roll these out to the API very soon.

The company, via a blog post, said, “We’re launching GPT‑Live, a new generation of voice models that make speaking with AI feel much more like having a real conversation.”

OpenAI ChatGPT users are using voice and dictation for hands-free help to practise speaking a language, storytelling and chit-chat while commuting. However, the new version offers improved answers, more natural conversations, enhanced listening skills, and visible responses. Just press the Voice button to activate the new GPT-Live function for more natural interactions.

The updated ChatGPT provides a better communication experience that is very comparable to real-life conversations. You can interrupt, stop or ask for slower replies, so the conversation can be fluid. It answers user input with conversational affirmations like “mhmm” or “got it”. The platform also allows you to further customise the speech by choosing from nine different voices. ChatGPT, with the latest models, gives more intelligent responses that meet users’ demands. It also provides several levels of reasoning, offering fast answers and more detailed solutions classified as ‘medium’ and ‘high’.

ChatGPT Voice has been upgraded to enhance the user experience by introducing a waiting mode instead of interrupting the speaker, which allows for better listening. It is now able to identify and concentrate on the user’s voice even in loud surroundings like traffic or other conversations. Furthermore, during conversations, rich visual cards covering a wide range of topics like weather, stocks, and sports are implemented to provide visual responses. These enhancements make the ChatGPT voice experience more natural, competent, and useful for daily usage.

GPT-Live prioritises safety by enhancing previous models and training for voice interactions. It employs improved safety assessments, including audio-native testing, to tackle serious concerns such as self-harm, psychosis, emotional dependency, violence, and sexual content.
Voice interactions are moderated with real-time safeguards that intervene to steer the conversation toward safer replies or halt it altogether when risks are detected. And crisis support systems built on the same technology as ChatGPT allow users in need to reach expert-verified helplines.

The firm has also strengthened safety for teen users, including parental controls and notifications that alert guardians in situations of high risk, including self-harm or suicide intent.

Our take on this?

Talking to an AI is an interesting paradox.

Humans generally come with baggage, biases, and bad days, but AI doesn’t, and yes, you can simply ask them silly questions or acknowledge or express things that are upsetting you without being judged or hurting any sentiments. Surprisingly, AI is slowly becoming a safe space for humans to untangle messy thoughts. It’s always there for you, even at 3:00 AM, when your friends and family are asleep. AI will joyfully match your energy, challenging your perspective, validating your feelings or explaining a difficult topic.

But a real conversation with an AI isn’t about taking the role of human connections. It is about the empathy and logical thinking that we, as human beings, have begun to lack. Now the machines can do what human beings sometimes can’t.
