Qualcomm has unveiled the Snapdragon Reality Elite platform to improve advanced mixed reality experiences. The platform claims to provide longer-lasting, sleeker, and cooler smartphones, with a whopping 48 TOPS of AI computing power to run huge vision and language models right on the device.
XREAL Project Aura will debut on Snapdragon Reality Elite and push optical see-through technology forward, improve battery economy, and increase tracking. The platform, launched at the Augmented World Expo, aims to provide immersive spatial computing with high visual quality and integrated AI across a range of devices, including all-in-one video-see-through headsets and lightweight tethered optical-see-through devices.
Tech Specs Revealed
The Snapdragon Reality Elite is a major leap in on-device AI capabilities, with up to 48 TOPS (tera-operations per second) that enables the creation of generative extended reality (XR) experiences. This technology allows for dynamic content generation, including photorealistic avatars, large language model (LLM)-based agents, and real-time object generation to enhance immersive experiences. Engagement improvements are also significant, providing better real-time replies, context-awareness, and natural user engagement, which are crucial for a smooth XR experience.

In terms of performance, Snapdragon Reality Elite delivers a 60% improvement in GPU performance, 30% better CPU capabilities and a massive 160% increase in NPU performance for complicated mixed reality situations. The graphics are also impressive, enabling up to 4.4K images per eye at 90 frames per second (fps) for clearer details, smoother action and better colour accuracy.

Furthermore, improvements to video see-through technology have resulted in lower latency and better picture quality, enabling a more natural integration of digital content into the physical world. That also means the design is optimised for power efficiency, with up to 20% longer battery life and cooler operation, and that adds to the comfort of using lighter headsets. Snapdragon Reality Elite is a core platform that powers a range of headsets and glasses in the XR ecosystem and provides the groundwork for future projects and products.
According to the company, it powers the newest Android XR devices launching first on XREAL Project Aura, offering greater optical see-through, better battery efficiency and better hand and head tracking.
