During the COVID-19 Pandemic, we are seeing a surge in the demand for TWS earphones as compared to Bluetooth headphones. We think this demand is good as these are comfortable to wear and especially because of its compact design. We have been using the Sony WH-H800 TWS wireless earphones for quite some time. And if we talk about the pricing the Sony TWS earphones are available with a price tag of Rs 14,990 via Flipkart as well as Sony retail stores (Sony Center and Sony Exclusive). So, without further ado, let’s get right into the review of Sony WF-H800 truly wireless earphones.

Design

The Sony WF-H800 truly wireless earphones comes with an in-ear design and in India, it is available in a single black colour option. Although in other markets the company offers these TWS earphones in a wide variety of colour options. The earphones come with an ergonomic Tri-hold structure that fits nicely inside the ears and not falls off easily. Besides this, the package includes the Type C charging cable as well as silicone rubber earbuds for different ear cavity types. All of these are soft, comfortable and sweat-resistant, so it can be your companion during your indoor and outdoor workout sessions. The Sony earphones have physical keys instead of touch controls that offer a soft click.

Talking about the charging case, it is quite big as compared to other brands offering earphones with a similar form factor. The earphones easily slip inside and get magnetically attached so that they don’t fall off. The USB Type-C port can be found at the bottom of the case. The lid of the Sony WF-H800 case has an LED light that glows during charging and when the earphones are placed inside the case.

Performance

Sony WF-H800 TWS earphones come with 6mm Neodymium drivers. So, these earphones are good for casual listeners who are looking for balance throughout the audio range from lows to highs. So you can use the earbuds for music listening as well as watching Netflix and Prime video if you are into that. The earphones use Bluetooth 5.0 and for quick connectivity, NFC is available too. This makes Bluetooth pairing as simple and easy as plugging in a cable. To use this feature, you need to be sure that both your mobile device and your headphones support “tap-to-pair” functionality.

Astonishingly, the WF-H800 TWS earphones do not have any IPX rating as it is only meant for casual listening. So, we don’t recommend you to use these for water sports or similar activities. To power on and off the earbuds is quite simple. Just take them out of the case or put them back into the case and they come alive or go to sleep.

You can also control volume from the earbuds itself. Though you require the smartphone app to change the functions such as Alexa, Google Voice Assistant and other media controls. When it comes to the passive sound isolation these earbuds deliver. These are as good as other Sony TWS earphones because the ear tips go deep into your ear canal therefore blocking the environmental noises. But, they do not have active noise cancellation also known as ANC.

Users can check the battery status using the smartphone app. Over that, you can check each part’s playback control sound, EQ adjustments, 360 reality audio set up, DSEE HX as well as the sound quality mode in the app too. Also be sure to turn off the Equalizer setting while using the DSEE HX Auto setting because if the Equalizer setting is enabled, DSEE HX will not work, even when DSEE HX is set to Auto.

Moving on to battery life. The Sony WF-H800 earbuds offer you eight hours of battery life while the charging case delivers one more additional charge of eight hours. This means a total of 16 hours is what the users get.

For audio quality, the vocals are not distracted by the bass in the background, which is good so you can hear more of the vocals. The bass is highly energetic and notable but it is not as bombastic for our liking. As we said before the bass doesn’t overpower the vocals and it still sounds sharp, so it is not a big negative. Overall, the Sony WF-H800 TWS earphones performed well considering the mid-range category.

Verdict

Sony is facing stiff competition from other brands in the TWS segment that are offering pocket-friendly wireless earphones. The Sony WF-H800 TWS earphones focus more on vocals and are perfect for people who like to watch a lot of Netflix as well as listen to a lot of music. So, we consider them a good starting buy for everyday casual listening. Long battery life is another plus of these nifty little sound operators.
