Food ordering and delivery service DoorDash has announced a big change to the payment of couriers. The company has said that going forward, its couriers will have the ability to earn hourly rates besides the tips they receive.
The couriers will now see a new option called ‘Earn by Time’ and the reason it is good for them is because this would guarantee an hourly minimum rate they would earn for the time they spend making deliveries. The time would start as soon as a courier accepts an order and will end only when the order is dropped to the customer.

This is a huge change from the current system where couriers earn a base pay on the basis of factors like time taken, distance and desirability. It is worth pointing out though that even now, not every order will have the option of ‘Earn by Time’. Also, couriers would have to enable the option of earning hourly rates at the start of every order that is applicable.
In addition to this, the company is also rolling out a feature for location-sharing that would enable couriers to share their live-location with up to five contacts. This enhances the existing safety features of the service that include a way for couriers to not serve rude customers and reminders for customers to switch on the lights of the porch when a courier is expected.
Besides this, another update called ‘Dash Along the Way’ has also been added that enables couriers to pick up orders while they are on their way to a specific destination. A new way of tipping is also there now which lets customers add a tip or boost up the one that they have already paid even after checking out.

That’s not all. There are some updates that would benefit the customers as well. This includes a new search option that enables customers to look for items across various grocery stores, restaurants and retail outlets. A new Browse tab has also been added with which customers can sift through different categories of products like drinks, beauty items, food supplies, etc in case they are not sure what they want to shop for.
One of the best new features is the option of multiple carts using which customers can put different products in different carts and the app will save the progress each time. This can prove to be extremely helpful while customers are preparing orders all through the week. Another useful feature that is being added is support for online SNAP/EBT payments at select stores like Aldi, Safeway, 7-Eleven and Meijer.
