In order to commemorate its 15th birthday, Google Maps has updated its logo and is rolling out new features based on feedback from its user. Now the users will be able to see updated Google Maps apps for Android as well as iOS with easy-to-access tabs. These include Explore, Commute, Saved, Contribute and Updates.
Yes, the new Google Maps update brings five new tabs that can be found at the bottom of the app’s screen. These tabs will provide easier access to everything that is needed.
Explore: The Explore tab will allow you to find information, ratings, reviews and more for about 200 million places around the world. This will also include local restaurants, nearby attractions as well as city landmarks.
Commute: The commute tab is helpful when you are travelling. It will ensure that you are on the most efficient route. You can also set your daily commute in order to get real-time traffic alerts, travel times and suggestions for alternative routes.
Saved: Here you will find a list of saved locations that can also be customised and shared with others.
Contribute: This tab will allow you to submit business reviews, missing places and photos on Google Maps.
Updates: This tab will be providing feeds of trending, must-see spots from local experts and publishers. These can also be shared with others and you can directly chat with businesses directly through this tab.
The fresh update will also bring new transit features in the Google Maps app that will let you stay informed while travelling by public transportation. Also, when travelling in public transport the users can now find the current temperature of the bus or the metro they are taking for a comfortable ride. People with special needs can find support wheelchair accessible entrance and seating with staffed assistance as well as accessible stop-button or hi-visible LED. In some regions a designated women’s section that will show information related to the availability of train carriages on their route that will increase your chances of getting a seat. Keeping in mind the user’s safety there is a Security onboard tab that will let you find out an installed security camera, whether security guard is present or any available helpline.
“These useful bits of information come from past riders who’ve shared their experiences and will appear alongside public transit routes when available. To help future riders, you can answer a short survey within Google Maps about your experience on recent trips. We’ll start rolling this out globally in March, with availability varying by region and municipal transportation agency.” Google said in its blog post.
