Taiwanese semiconductor manufacturer, MediaTek, has today introduced the MT9638 4K Smart TV Chip. As the name suggests, the chipset is aimed at premium-end 4K smart TVs that comes integrated with an AI processing unit (APU). This is coupled with support for variable refresh rate, motion estimation, motion compensation, HDR10+ and more for smooth graphics. The chipset is expected to power 4K smart TVs by Q2 2021.

Alex Chen, General Manager of the TV Business Unit at MediaTek said, “As smart home appliances become more intelligent and diversified, smart TVs are becoming the new hub for the smart home as consumers take advantage of AI-enabled multimedia features to control all their devices right from their TV. The new MT9638 continues our legacy as the No. 1 chip provider of smart TVs, bringing consumers incredible AI, multimedia, gaming and entertainment experiences in theater-quality 4K.”

The MT9638 enhances the user experience with a custom APU that brings high-performance AI computing to smart TVs. Over that, the MediaTek chipset comes with built-in AI picture quality technology that enables real-time content and scene recognition, automatically adjusting colour saturation, brightness and more. Whereas the  AI super-resolution technology together with MEMC technology increases the resolution through multi-frame blending to deliver clearer images at the smart TV’s native resolution.

In addition to this, the MediaTek MT9638 4K Smart TV Chip has support for the Wi-Fi 6 for fast, reliable internet connectivity and HDMI 2.1, which integrates support for VRR to match movies or console gaming frame-rates in order to avoid screen tearing. t also supports applications powered by AI voice recognition and AI-enabled video calls hence allowing customers to interact with their smart TV.

The MT9638 makes use of the multi-core Arm Cortex-A55 CPU, Arm Mali-G52 GPU and dedicated MediaTek APU integrated into a single chip. The display will have support for up to 4K 60FPS resolution along with a multimedia decoding engine for HEVC, VP9 and the latest AV1 content. Also on the display front, it holds up to HDR10+ support, enabling full array backlight local dimming with less than 2000 zones.

Dolby Atmos and DTS Virtual X support is also there to contribute to surrounding sound support. In terms of connectivity, it has the HDMI 2.1a and USB 3.0 interfaces as well as gigabit-class Wi-Fi 6. Moreover, the support for up to four far-field microphones reinforces the chips to provide whole room coverage for voice assistants with ultra-low power consumption (0.5W) on standby and ultra-fast, one-second resume for wake-up mode.
