Recently PM Narendra Modi led Government banned 59 Chinese apps in India over “prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, the security of the state and public order” concerns. Following this, the Prime Minister has announced ‘’Aatmanirbhar Bharat App Innovation Challenge ” in the country asking the IT workers to participate in order to create Made in India Apps.
To announce the launch of its innovation challenge in the country Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday took to Twitter and other social media accounts to challenge the tech workforce as well as start-ups to take part in the contest to develop Made in India Apps. Ministry of Electronics together with Information Technology and Atal Innovation Mission – Niti Aayog launches Digital India AatmaNirbhar Bharat Innovate Challenge.

This innovative task comes with various cash awards and incentives of featuring Apps on Leaderboards seeks to create an ecosystem where Indian entrepreneurs and Startups are incentivised to ideate, incubate, build, nurture and sustain Tech solutions that can serve not only citizens within India but also the world. This initiative is aimed at developing Make in India for India and the World which means to create world-class applications in the country.

PM Narendra Modi LinkedIn post reads, “Nowadays, we are seeing huge interest and enthusiasm among the start-up and tech ecosystem to innovate, develop and promote homegrown apps. Today, when the entire nation is working towards creating an Aatmanirbhar Bharat, it is a good opportunity to give direction to their efforts, momentum to their hard-work and mentorship to their talent to evolve Apps which can satisfy our market as well as compete with the world.”
The AatmaNirbhar Bharat App Innovation Challenge is being launched in the following 8 broad categories and each category includes subcategories within them:
- Office Productivity & Work from Home
- Social Networking
- E-Learning
- Entertainment
- Health & Wellness
- Business including Agritech and Fintech
- News
- Games
The government aims to develop a mobile-based live streaming platform for hosting webinars, lectures, etc, messaging and video calling applications, microblogging applications, news applications, online gaming platforms, photo-editing application and others.
The PM also said, “Can we think of making traditional Indian games more popular via Apps? Can we develop Apps with targeted and smart access to the right age group for learning, gaming, etc? Can we develop gaming apps for people in rehabilitation or getting counselling to help them in their journey? There are many such questions and technology alone can give answers in a creative manner,”
