OnePlus phones become more secure, announces 2 years of software updates and 3 years of security patches for its smartphones
It is assuring for the customers when a company releases white papers, boosting confidence that their beloved smartphone is and will be secured at least for 3 years. Google releases security patches for Android every now and then, but phone companies don’t really end up pushing them out to the manufactured handsets on time. This becomes a problem as the device is vulnerable to attacks and hackers. All of us keep some sort of sensitive information on the smartphones, weather it is the ATM pin or just images.
OnePlus has become more transparent in its approach and has sent out a release stating that they will provide 2 years of software updates for its devices. That is not it, all the devices will be under a 3-year security patch program. This is good news for all OnePlus users (OnePlus 3) onwards, their smartphone will stay up to date and secure.
OnePlus is one of the fastest security patch and update provider for its smartphones, next to Nokia. There are companies like Samsung and Xiaomi who end up delaying things and take a long time to release patches which makes their smartphones more prone to attacks and hacks.
In a statement OnePlus has said, “In order to provide our community with best in class software maintenance and upgrade cycle, we are officially announcing OnePlus Software Maintenance Schedule.”
They further added, “As per the maintenance schedule, there will be 2 years of regular software updates from the release date of the phone (release dates of T variants would be considered), including new features, Android versions, Android security patches and bug fixes and an additional year of Android security patch updates every 2 months.”
OnePlus confirmed the schedule applies to all OnePlus 3/3T, OnePlus 5/5T and OnePlus 6 devices. This is a great move by company as they have become more transparent in their tactic. The updates will be provided over the air (OTA) on all the above handsets.

Qualcomm launches Snapdragon 632, 439 and 429 processors for budget and midrange phones
American multinational semiconductor Qualcomm has extended its range of mid-range chipsets. It has unveiled snapdragon 632, Snapdragon 439 and Snapdragon 429 and all three newly launched chips focus on budget and midrange segment of smartphones. A major change in the new processors is that they can handle AI-related tasks well. The new chipsets were showcased at the ongoing MWC Shanghai 2018.
The 600-series and 400-series by Qualcomm has till now been the best-selling chips because they often power devices that are value for money instead of high-end ones. Speaking more on the AI-processing, the chipsets support Qualcomm’s Neural Processing SDK which helps in changing styles and filters during live videos. The devices’ face detection will get enhanced with these processors and they will also get text translation and object detection.
Another feature that will come to the cameras of the devices will be the ability to detect the subject and foreground which will provide improved bokeh pictures. The AI-functionality is not the only highlight of the processors. They are also said to provide better performance and power efficiency to the devices they are used in.
Speaking of the chipsets, Snapdragon 632 has Kryo 250 semi-custom cores including four performance cores based on cortex-A73 and four efficiency cores based on cortex-A53. These are clocked up to 1.8GHz. Snapdragon 632’s FinFET 14nm processor is said to improve performance by 40% compared to its predecessor. It is said to enhance the power efficiency of the device too. It also has Adreno 506 GPU which is said to increase the graphics performance by 10% as compared to its predecessor Snapdragon 626. Snapdragon 632 comes with X9 LTE modem that gives cat13 speeds of 300Mbps DL and 150Mbps UL. Coming to imaging duties, the processor can support either a 24MP camera or a dual rear camera setup of 13MP+13MP. It can also support 4K videos at 30fps, FullHD+ displays and Quick Charge 4.0.
Coming to Snapdragon 429 and 439 chipsets, they are said to give 25% better performance compared to their predecessors Snapdragon 425 and 430 respectively. Both come with 12nm FinFET process which is said to improve the battery life of the devices they are used in. Snapdragon 429 supports either a 16MP camera or dual 8MP cameras and a 720p screen resolution. On the other hand, Snapdragon 439 can support a screen resolution of 1080p and can hold a 21MP camera or dual 8MP cameras for imaging duties.
Leaked: Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL show up in renders with a notch design and dual front cameras
There have been lot of rumours flying about the notch design of the Google’s flagship smartphone to be launched this year, Google Pixel 3 and Google Pixel 3 XL. In the latest images leaked by OnLeaks, the smartphone does sport a notch design with dual front facing cameras on the larger Google Pixel 3 XL, touted to have a 6.3 or 6.2-inch FHD+ display. The sensors can also be seen cramped within this notch.
However, the notch is not there in the smaller variant of the Google Pixel 3 that also sports dual front cameras. These are the third generation of the Google Pixel smartphones and should be revealed in September this year by the company. Other specifications known to us, both the smartphones will feature Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 845 chipsets and will come in 64GB as well as 128GB variants.
Rumour mill is also churning with mixed reactions on the amount of RAM in each phone. While some say they will sport 6 GB of RAM, others suggest 8 GB and few do say both version like the OnePlus 6 variants will be available. However, we think an 8 GB version would be sufficient, no need for a 6GB one. According to the renders both Google Pixel 3 XL and Pixel 3 sports a fingerprint reader at the back and a single rear camera with LED flash.
Two colour options will be there, Black and White, with top part of the rear panel sporting glass and rest metal. The display is not an infinity one as you can see a little bit of body bar at the bottom. Without any physical home buttons, we are assuming all the navigation keys will be on the screen. Or maybe gesture controls will be supported. Overall, we are not in awe of the design, but these seem to be first cuts.
