Google Pixel 9 Pro XL Review: A splash of AI magic

The new Google Pixel 9 series features not two but four variants. This includes the tech outfit’s sophomore foldable, as Google has ditched the iterative naming scheme for a more accessible monicker. The top-spec ‘Pro XL’ variant flaunts the biggest display and battery size out of the three non-foldable Pixels. Google has also stepped up its hardware game and thrown down the gauntlet for other flagships. On the software front, the Pixel 9 Series showcases a versatile range of AI features, reminding everyone why it is the home of Android. However, all of these advancements come at a significant price as the Google Pixel 9 Pro XL fetches Rs 1,25,000. We used the smartphone as our daily driver for a week and put it through a series of tests to determine if it lives up to the price tag. Here is our in-depth review of the Google Pixel 9 Pro XL.

Google Pixel 9 Pro XL Review: Design and Display

Here’s what you get inside Google Pixel 9 Pro XL’s retail box:

  • Smartphone
  • USB Type-C to Type-C cable
  • SIM ejector
  • Safety Guide

The retail package is missing a power adapter and a basic phone cover. This is never a good look on a smartphone with a heavy price tag but it is slowly becoming the norm with only a few OEMs left that ship their product with the necessary accessories. The good thing about Pixel 9 Pro XL’s unboxing experience is that there’s no plastic packaging to be seen anywhere.

Google Pixel 9 Pro XL Review: Design and Display

The hardware improvements on the Pixel 9 Pro XL place it in the top-tier list of smartphones along with the Samsung S24 Ultra and the iPhone 16 Pro Max. The glass back panel receives a matte finish which lends it an amazing in-hand feel. The Google logo is embossed at the centre of this panel and has a contrasting glossy finish. The flat aluminium rails are curved at the corners, reminding us of the Xiaomi 14. This frame has a smooth texture and attracts a fair bit of fingerprints after prolonged use. The glass back panel does not register any smudges at all.

design

One of the most talked about changes on the Pixel 9 series is the rear camera panel. Google has ditched the iconic camera visor for a pill-shaped cutout. While it has gained somewhat of a mixed response from the audience, we are big fans of the change as it gives the smartphone a cleaner look without robbing it of its personality. The smartphone is still instantly recognisable as a Pixel. Apart from the three lenses (more on that later), the rear cutout also houses a temperature sensor.

design

The side key and volume rocker are positioned on the right edge of the frame. The bottom section contains the speaker outlet, USB Type-C port, primary microphone, and SIM tray. The secondary microphone finds its way to the top edge of the frame. We would have preferred an IR blaster on the top edge of the frame but Google has chosen to place the 5G signal antenna there.

display

The Google Pixel 9 Pro XL is the largest out of the three variants, rocking a 6.8-inch LTPO display. This display can hit an impressive 3,000 nits on the brightness scale, making it perfectly legible even under direct sunlight. The optical fingerprint reader from the previous generation Pixels has been replaced with a superior ultrasonic sensor on the Pixel 9. The result is noticeable immediately as it takes a gentle tap to unlock the device. As far as hardware upgrades go, this has to be one of our favourites.

Google Pixel 9 Pro XL Review: Design and Display

Sleek, uniform bezels surround the flat OLED display. The touch response offered by this display is exceptional. There’s satisfying haptic feedback to go along with it, which makes the browsing experience very fun. There’s HDR10+ support onboard and the display can reach a 120Hz maximum refresh rate. We streamed a bunch of titles across platforms like Netflix & Prime Video on the smartphone and were very pleased with the viewing experience. The display produces detailed pictures that flaunt vivid colours. The audio output from the stereo speaker setup is rich and well-rounded.

The front and back panels on the Google Pixel 9 Pro XL receive Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protection. The smartphone carries an IP68 rating and can survive being submerged up to 1.5 metres for 30 minutes.

Google Pixel 9 Pro XL Review: Performance and Cameras

Powering the Pixel 9 Pro XL is Google’s in-house Tensor G4 chipset. The top-spec Pixel packs 16GB RAM and is available in two storage variants – 256GB and 512GB. On the Geekbench 6 app, the smartphone scored 1,924 points in the single-core test and 4,574 points in the multi-core test. When we reviewed the Samsung S24 Ultra, it scored 2,165 (single-core) and 6,416 (multi-core) points.

Google Pixel 9 Pro XL Review: Performance and Cameras

The Tensor G4 chipset puts up the power required for lag-free everyday use. During the week-long review period, we did not hit a single snag or hiccup while performing routine tasks on the Google Pixel 9 Pro XL. The apps load without any delay and multitasking on this device is a delight. Using the camera in direct sunlight does warm up the phone, but we did not come across any crashes or overheating warnings.

Pixel 9 Pro XL’s gaming performance is still a step behind other premium flagships like the S24 Ultra and gaming specialists like the iQOO 12 (read our iQOO 12 review here). We played titles like Call of Duty Mobile and Asphalt Legends Unite on the smartphone and were rather unimpressed by how the heat dissipation was managed. The back panel got significantly warm as we approached 40 minutes of gameplay. It is about time that Google equipped the Pixel with a better cooling system.

Google Pixel 9 Pro XL ships with Android 14 out of the box, which seems like an odd choice to us. Pixels are the home of Android, so it makes little sense to not use them to showcase your new software. Given the Android 15 rollout is just a few weeks away, Google could have managed the timelines better and debuted it on the Pixel 9 series. This also means that Google’s promise of 7 major OS upgrades will only take the Pixel 9 Pro XL to Android 21, the same as the Pixel 8 series.

Google Pixel 9 Pro XL Review: Performance and Cameras

While it may ship with last year’s Android OS, the Pixel 9 Pro XL has been infused with new AI features that make their presence felt in different spaces. To begin with, three new apps on the smartphone rely on Gemini AI in different capacities. Our favourite of the lot is the Weather app, which has a very tasteful aesthetic. The background of the app mimics the weather of the location. There are fun widgets for elements like humidity, wind velocity, UV index, visibility, and more. The AI-generated weather reports are generally on point, but we did notice that the app failed to generate them on certain occasions.

weather app

Next up, the Pixel Studio app is your standard AI image generator which produces passable results based on the prompts entered by the user. It isn’t up there with some of the leading AI image generators out there but it has a relatively faster render time. There are a few style presets you can choose from, but feeding custom style instructions as a part of the prompt does not produce the best results. Overall, this app was a hit or miss for us.

pixel studio

The Screenshots app collects all the screenshots you’ve taken of your device and stores them in one place. Every screenshot has an AI-generated meta description, which is surprisingly on point. You can organise your screenshots in different collections if you’re working on a project. Our favourite feature of this app is that it allows the user to search for a particular screenshot by entering the relevant keywords. For example, we took a screenshot of a WiFi password and the app related the relevant results when we searched for ‘WiFi’ or ‘password’. While this app is certainly not a gimmick, it begs the question of whether it would’ve been better to incorporate its functionalities into the regular Screenshots folder within the Google Photos app. Perhaps Google wants to keep this app’s features Pixel-exclusive for now.

Moving on, Google Gemini is a welcome addition to the new Pixel. Long-pressing the side button now triggers Gemini instead of Google Assistant. The AI engine taps into the functionalities of the old-school Assistant whenever necessary. You can have a free-flowing conversation with the AI assistant using Gemini Live, but it requires access to Gemini Advanced. Gemini Advanced is a part of the Google One package, but new Pixel users get a 1-year free trial.

The native camera app on the Google Pixel 9 series has a new Add Me feature. This feature comes in handy while taking group pictures when you don’t have a stand to prop up your phone. If you don’t want to burden a stranger with taking a picture, switching to this mode will yield decent results. Once you take the first shot, hand your phone over to another person in the group and assume your position in the frame. When the second shot is taken, the Pixel will stitch the two images together. The images appear natural and it takes a very keen eye to spot the minuscule flaws, if any.

The Google Photos app gets a couple of new generative AI features as well. The Magic Editor has a new Reimagine tool which analyses the elements of your picture and adds more stuff to it based on your prompts. Think of it as the opposite of the Magic Eraser. You can use the eraser to remove the road traffic on an image and the Reimagine tool to add some cars on an empty road. Both tools are tuned very nicely and produce good results.

Overall, the software experience on offer here is simply exquisite. The lack of bloatware gives this device a clean look. There is a good range of customisation options which can be used to give the Pixel a more personalised touch. The AI features do not seem like they are plastered on the device for the sake of being there. Instead, they are nicely woven into the software. If you don’t want anything to do with AI, you can easily ignore its presence on the device.

The top-spec Pixel has the biggest battery out of all the non-foldable Pixel variants this year. The 5,060 mAh battery offers incredible mileage, lasting an entire day even with heavy usage. We were able to clock up to 7 hours of screen time on the device before hitting 15% charge. Our daily tasks on the Google Pixel 9 Pro XL during the review period included media streaming, video calling, social media browsing, photo editing, navigation, instant messaging, and gaming. This phenomenal battery performance is only diminished by the device’s slow charging speed (maxing out at 37W). It took us 90 minutes to bring the Pixel to 100% charge.

A delectable photography experience is the cornerstone of every Pixel smartphone. The Pixel 9 Pro XL does not disappoint in this regard. The rear camera panel packs a 50MP primary shooter, a 48MP telephoto lens with 5x optical zoom, and another 48MP sensor for the ultrawide lens.

primary shooter

Google Pixel 9 Pro XL Review: Performance and Cameras

Pictures taken with the 50MP primary shooter in outdoor daylight conditions are balanced and detailed. The colours are rich without being boosted. The smartphone does a good job of exposing the sky perfectly and assigning it the appropriate colour. The dynamic range and contrast displayed in the images are also very good. There is no room for complaints here, the Pixel 9 Pro XL proves it is one of the best in the business.

Google Pixel 9 Pro XL Review: Performance and Cameras

ultrawide
Ultrawide Shot

The 48MP ultrawide camera puts up a great performance as well. The images taken with this camera are a tad softer but they display vivid colours and excellent composition. It needs to be mentioned that the field of view of this lens is wider than its peers.

ultrawide
UItrawide Shot
telephoto
Telephoto Lens: 1x v 2x

The 50MP telephoto lens offers 5x optical zoom. Combined with intelligent photo processing, this camera produces tremendous results. There is no noticeable drop in quality up to 10x zoom, which is simply incredible. To have the option to take crisp pictures at 10x zoom is why you pay extra for a Pixel. We pushed the zoom to its 30x limit and were happy with what it offered. The resulting pictures maintained good composition and were able to decipher distant billboards and signs with ease.

Telephoto Lens: 10x v 30x

We took a range of shots in limited lighting conditions and were pleased with how well the Pixel 9 Pro XL understood the scene and assigned accurate colours to the subject and the background. The primary shooter lets in a good amount of light and the smartphone brightens up the subject in the photoprocessing stage. Of course, you need to turn on Night Sight for the best results. The ultrawide camera also puts up a good performance in limited lighting, although the images are a little grainy.

In portrait mode, the smartphone does a good job of detecting the edges of the subject and separating it from the background. The images are well-focused and have a good amount of blur. The 42MP selfie camera takes good portraits as well, although they are a bit contrasty for our liking.

Verdict

The Pixel 9 Pro XL belongs in the upper echelon of Android smartphones. The new design tweaks bring a fresh look to the device without compromising its identity. Google has stepped up the hardware on this device in a big way too. The display is brighter than ever before and the ultrasonic fingerprint sensor brings lightning-fast unlock speeds. The high-end build quality and even weight distribution elevate the in-hand feel of the phone to another level.

Android 14 delivers a familiar performance on the software front but it is the AI features that steal the show. We like how Gemini works in tandem with Google Assistant, which saves you the struggle of juggling between two voice assistants. The new ‘Reimagine’ tool is a fine addition to the Magic Editor. A versatile battery life ties the whole experience together.

Gaming performance and thermal management are two aspects where Google needs to bridge the gap between the Pixel and other Android flagships. The Tensor G4 chipset runs a little warm, especially while shooting videos in outdoor conditions. A better cooling system will vastly benefit the Pixel.

Google Pixel 9 Pro XL: Pros

  • Bright display
  • Ultrasonic fingerprint sensor
  • Seamless AI integration
  • Excellent camera performance
  • Versatile battery

Google Pixel 9 Pro XL: Cons

  • Gets warm while gaming and shooting videos
  • Slow charging speed

According to the firm, this enables anyone in India—students or content creators—to quickly and simply create localised versions of flyers, resumes, banners, logos, and more by utilising Adobe Express’s GenAI tools, which are powered by Adobe Firefly and include Generate Image and Generative Fill.

This function increases efficiency, facilitates simple navigation, and lets users peruse pertinent features and templates, which speeds up the completion of tasks. It is anticipated that the new generative AI-powered features will improve user experience.

Adobe Express provides a premium Translate tool, which is presently free for a limited time. This feature allows users to easily translate text across single and multi-page files, removing the need for manual translations and third-party apps. This feature enhances accessibility and customisation, allowing users to take advantage of Adobe Express’ large collection of English templates.

The user interface is now available in Hindi, Tamil, and Bengali, providing an intuitive experience. It also has text-element translation, which allows users to specify which elements are translated, and multi-page translation, which streamlines workflows by translating content across multiple pages.

Apple allows developers to invite former users to re-subscribe cancelled iOS subscriptions with the introduction of “Win-Back Offers” in the App Store

Apple has introduced a new App Store feature known as ‘win-back offers’, which allows developers to offer discounts to former users in order to urge them to renew their subscriptions. These discounts are only available for auto-renewable subscriptions and can be applied to customers who have recently discontinued their subscriptions. The function is intended to target users who are currently not subscribers to the app’s services.

‘Win-back offers’ is a new feature in the App Store that Apple introduced that lets developers ask users to resubscribe to their app or game. These deals, which come with plans that renew automatically, let developers give past customers discounts to entice them to buy a subscription. The method is intended to reach users who have stopped using the app’s services, and previous users may be presented with a special offer that could persuade them to purchase a new subscription. Only memberships that automatically renew will be eligible for the deals.

  • Across the App Store, including on your product page, as well as in personalised recommendations and editorial selections on the Today, Games, and Apps tabs.
  • In your app or game.
  • Via a direct link, you share using your own marketing channels.
  • In Subscription settings.

0

Samsung TV Plus continues to diversify its offerings, now partnering with the India TV Group to launch four new channels. This move brings India TV, India TV Speed News, India TV Aap Ki Adalat, and India TV Yoga to the platform, enhancing the service’s already robust selection of free content. The collaboration highlights Samsung’s commitment to providing high-quality, ad-supported streaming TV (FAST) options to Indian consumers.

What’s New with Samsung TV Plus?

Samsung TV Plus, the free ad-supported service, now offers over 100 channels to Indian viewers. The service comes pre-installed on Samsung Smart TVs and offers a wide range of live and on-demand content. From sports to entertainment, the platform provides a mix of global and local options for users who crave variety without the burden of a subscription fee.

The latest partnership with India TV Group means that viewers can now access a broader selection of programming. The four new channels cover a wide range of content—news, current affairs, interviews with high-profile figures, and fitness shows. This expansion aligns well with the growing demand for diverse content among Samsung’s Indian consumers.

Kunal Mehta, Head of Partnerships at Samsung TV Plus India, remarked, “The addition of the four new channels from the India TV group impresses upon our vision to deliver quality and diverse content.” This statement underscores the platform’s effort to offer a variety of programming that caters to different tastes and interests, without sacrificing quality.

A New Avenue for India TV Group

For India TV Group, the partnership opens up new possibilities. The media company’s exclusive Connected TV (CTV) channels, including its flagship India TV and the ever-popular “Aap Ki Adalat,” will now reach a broader audience. According to Amit Kumar Sinha, Chief Strategy Officer at India TV, “We are optimistic that the coming together of India TV and Samsung TV Plus will redefine and improve the experience of online content consumption.”

This collaboration highlights a key trend in the media industry—traditional broadcasters are increasingly turning to streaming services to meet the changing habits of viewers. By leveraging platforms like Samsung TV Plus, media companies can engage a growing number of cord-cutters who are opting for free, ad-supported options over traditional TV.

The Growth of Free Ad-Supported Streaming (FAST)

Samsung TV Plus isn’t just a smart move for viewers—it’s also a smart play for advertisers. The FAST model allows content owners and brands to reach audiences at scale while keeping the experience seamless for users. With more than 2,600 ad-supported linear channels globally, Samsung TV Plus leads the charge in this rapidly growing market. The service’s availability on a wide range of devices, including Samsung Smart TVs, Galaxy devices, and even smart refrigerators, only adds to its appeal.

The mix of local and international content positions Samsung TV Plus as a serious contender in the growing field of free streaming options. Three more improvements are coming soon to Chrome to make it easier to access and organise your tabs, whether you’re on your phone, tablet or computer.”

Chrome for iOS now supports tab groups, which allow users to group important tabs and customise their names and colours for easy identification. To use this function, open the tab grid, long-press a tab, and then click “Add Tab to New Group.” Tabs can be rearranged as desired.

Chrome will soon allow users to save and sync tab groups across all desktop and mobile platforms, allowing them to begin a project in one place and continue it in another without losing work. This function is especially helpful for organising research on a larger screen, such as when arranging a trip. The tab group will automatically sync to the desktop, allowing users to continue the trip-planning experience when they open Chrome on their PC.

Truke Yoga Beat Review: An ultra-affordable headset for a niche audience

Indian audio outfit Truke has added another product to its newly launched Open-ear Wireless Stereo Range. Truke Yoga Beat is priced at Rs 799, making it the most affordable OWS from the brand so far. Previously, we reviewed the Buds Freedom and the Buds Liberty OWS which proved to be worth their pricetags. The entry-level Yoga Beat OWS makes some tradeoffs to keep its price in check. It sports a neckband design, ditching the charging case for USB Type-C charging. Like any other Bluetooth neckband, the Yoga Beat has physical buttons for volume control and power. We used the Truke Yoga Beat as our primary headset for a week, here is our in-depth review of the OWS.

Read Also: How to get AI features on your old iPhone?

Truke Yoga Beat Review: Design

Before we talk about the design, here’s what you get inside Truke Yoga Beat’s retail box.

  • Wireless neckband
  • USB Type-A to Type-C cable
  • User manual
  • Warranty card

Contrary to a regular neckband, the Yoga Beat wraps around the back of the head. In true OWS fashion, two earbuds hover over the ears instead of fitting in the concha and focusing the drivers on the auditory canal. A thin wire connects the earbuds. The Yoga Beat is available in a single-size option. While this is meant to be a one-size-fits-all product, we felt that the fit could have been a bit more snug. If you have a small head size, you should wear the headset and inspect its fit before buying it. If making an online purchase is your only option, Truke has a very handy 7-day return policy.

Truke Yoga Beat Review: Design

The Yoga Beat has a plastic build (apart from the titanium alloy flex wire), which is to be expected from a headset in this price range. We didn’t use the headset long enough to comment on the wire’s elasticity, but it feels like it can stand rigorous use. The plastic panels on the earbuds have a smooth texture and sport the Truke branding. The inner panels have a contrasting colour but the texture is less glossy. Both earbuds contain an individual microphone.

design

The right earbud houses the physical buttons for power, volume up, and volume down. The outer panels of both earbuds are touch-sensitive and can be used to toggle the media playback, answer/reject calls, and switch to gaming mode. These panels need better tuning as they struggle to register even the most basic touch gestures. The volume buttons work fine but they need to be long-pressed to toggle the volume.

Truke has not revealed the IP rating for the Yoga Beat headset so we’d advise against using it while it’s raining. We used it while working out and did not notice any damage caused by sweat. As we mentioned earlier, the fit around the head could have been a bit tighter, but overall, the Yoga Beat did not disappoint as a gym accessory. It is perhaps one of the lightest headsets we’ve ever worn. The ear fatigue caused by the earbuds after extended use is minimal.

Truke Yoga Beat Review: Performance

Delivering the audio output on the Truke Yoga Beat is a 14.2mm titanium driver on either earbud. The headset supports Bluetooth 5.4, which makes the pairing process uncomplicated and seamless. There’s voice assistant support onboard as well.

We listened to a wide range of music on the Yoga Beat and were satisfied by the quality of its audio output given its price tag. Of course, you’re not going to get a world-class soundstage on a product that costs Rs 800, but the Yoga Beat manages to deliver an enjoyable output. Being an OWS, the bass does not pop in the mix as much as it does on regular TWS products. The overall output is a little tinny but it does not diminish the music listening experience massively.

Truke Yoga Beat Review: Performance

The mids and the highs in the mix are clear and distinct. If you don’t like the bass elements shrouding the other frequencies, you will like this headset. Being an open-ear wireless stereo headset, the Yoga Beat does leak some audio to its surroundings, but it isn’t significant enough to cause a nuisance in a public setting. On the flip side, the advantage of an open-ear design is that it doesn’t completely isolate the background sounds, allowing the user to be connected to their surroundings. If you like running outdoors, you will certainly appreciate this element of the headset.

The Yoga Beat offers a good calling experience in an indoor setting. The two microphones extract the voice of the speaker, suppress the background noise, and relay it to the listener perfectly. However, the call quality takes a significant hit in noisy, outdoor surroundings.

performance

Truke Yoga Beat supports a multi-point connection, which is very rare to see on a headset in this price range. However, the implementation of this feature is a little shoddy. For starters, you need to disconnect the headset from the primary device to pair it with another device. Secondly, to switch playback between devices, you need to manually pause the media on the device that is currently in use. Even though we don’t mind this too much, the headset often struggles to play the media on the second device. It requires connecting the headset to the device again, which beats the point of this feature.

The headset is equipped with a 180mAh battery and promises to last up to 30 hours on a full charge. During the week-long review period, we used the Truke Yoga Beat for calling, listening to music, and even a bit of gaming. We were able to squeeze out 20 hours of playtime from the headset on a full charge. It takes 90 minutes to fully charge the open-ear headset. A quick 10-minute charge offers up to 4 hours of playtime.

Verdict

For a headset priced at Rs 800, the Truke Yoga Beat ticks all the essential boxes. It produces a decent audio output that makes for a fun listening experience and offers a good battery life. However, Truke’s biggest achievement with the Yoga Beat is bringing a niche design to an ultra-affordable price category. The open-ear design of the headset ensures that you’re always aware of your surroundings while listening to music. The lack of passive noise cancellation means that you can wear the Yoga Beat on an outdoor run and always be aware of the incoming traffic. The touch controls on the headset leave more to be desired, but having physical buttons for volume control is a good addition.

Truke Yoga Beat: Pros

  • Open-ear design
  • Does not cause ear fatigue
  • Very affordable

Truke Yoga Beat: Cons

  • Touch controls need more tuning
  • Does not switch playback automatically in multi-point connection mode

How to get AI features on your old iPhone?

Apple launched the new iPhone 16 Series at the ‘Glowtime’ event on Monday. The new iPhones get a new button for camera controls and a few tweaks to the form factor and design. The biggest upgrade comes under the hood in the form of the A18 and A18 Pro chipsets (depending on the variant). These chipsets have a more powerful Neural Processing Unit compared to their predecessors. This allows the new series of iPhones to run the artificial intelligence suite of features – Apple Intelligence. Among older iPhones, the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max (powered by the A17 Pro chipset) are the only two models with an NPU powerful enough to run Apple Intelligence. If you have an older iPhone, there are some alternatives you can turn to in order to get AI features on your device.

Read Also: Apple Watch Series 10 Unveiled: Thinner, Smarter, and Packed with New Features

Before you begin

One of the key attributes that separates Apple Intelligence from its Android peers is the way in which it goes about computing AI tasks. One of the reasons why Apple’s AI features aren’t available on older iPhones is that they do not have powerful neural cores to handle on-device AI computation. Most of the AI tasks on the iPhone are performed on the device itself, thereby protecting the privacy of users by not transferring their data to external servers. Of course, in some scenarios, Apple may seek the help of cloud servers, but the user is made aware of the change.

All the alternatives to Apple Intelligence that we’ve mentioned on this list rely on cloud servers for AI computation. This is the key tradeoff you will need to make if you don’t want to upgrade to the new iPhone 16 series. In terms of output, these alternatives match the performance of Apple Intelligence.

Use Microsoft SwiftKey AI Keyboard

Use Microsoft SwiftKey Keyboard

Out of all the AI features in the Apple Intelligence package, ‘Writing Tools’ will be the most popular among iPhone users due to its utility, versatility, and easy access. Writing Tools help you frame your emails, photo captions, notes, texts, and more. Any time you tap on a text box, Writing Tools are there to help you. As eye-catching as this feature is, it is not exclusive to iPhones.

The Microsoft SwiftKey keyboard offers the same set of features as Writing Tools. You can use SwiftKey to generate responses and change the tone of your text to make it look more casual or professional. The keyboard is integrated with Copilot, GPT-4, and Dall-E 3. You can access Copilot with just one tap and enter any prompt or query that you want to be answered. The emoji tab in the keyboard has an image generator powered by Dall-E 3. This tool is the perfect alternative to Image Playground as it can create images based on your prompts at any given time.

Use the ChatGPT app

ChatGPT iOS app is now available in India, expanded to more countries

Apart from text composition, Writing Tools can summarise any piece of text for you. The ChatGPT app for iOS can do the same. The only catch is that you will need to paste the text into the app. On the bright side, ChatGPT can summarise PDFs with ease. All you need to do is upload the document on the app and give the chatbot the summarisation command. Once you get used to the process, it will not be any different than using Writing Tools.

The ChatGPT app also acts as a viable alternative to Image Playground. OpenAI’s Dall-E image generator is integrated with the app and can be summoned at any time. You can throw imaginative prompts at ChatGPT and it will produce relevant images in a short period of time.

Use the Google Photos app

How to stack similar photos together in Google Photos? Is your iPhone not compatible with Apple Intelligence? Here's how you can get AI features on your old iPhone.

Apple’s new ‘Clean Up’ tool to erase unwanted objects from pictures is integrated into its Photos app. This AI tool does not rely on cloud servers to carry out the computation required to edit the pictures. If you use an old iPhone, the Google Photos app is the closest alternative to this tool. Google’s Magic Eraser has been around for several years. Previously available on only Android smartphones, Google rolled out this feature on its iOS app in 2023. Some may even prefer it over Apple’s Clean Up tool. Both tools require the user to circle or highlight the object they want to erase from the picture. The Magic Eraser uses AI to scan the image for contextual cues and appropriately fills up the blank pixels left behind by the erased object.

Use Magmo Magnetic Call Recorder

Use Magmo Magnetic Call Recorder Is your iPhone not compatible with Apple Intelligence? Here's how you can get AI features on your old iPhone.

One of the highly anticipated features of iOS 18.1 is the ability to record calls on the device. Not only can the iPhone record calls, but it can also transcribe them using Apple Intelligence. The process is completely on-device to retain your privacy. If you do not wish to upgrade to the iPhone 16 yet, the Rev Call Recorder app and Magmo Magnetic Call Recorder are decent alternatives to this feature. The latter is a device that snaps on your iPhone’s back panel using MagSafe and creates audio recordings of your calls. The advantage of using this device is that it does not send recording alerts to other users on the call. If you want AI transcriptions of your calls, use the Auxxy Magnetic Call Recorder.

Use Meta AI on WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook Messenger

How to use Meta AI like a pro on WhatsApp? Is your iPhone not compatible with Apple Intelligence? Here's how you can get AI features on your old iPhone.

Out of all the Apple Intelligence features, Genmoji is the toughest nut to crack. An AI spin on ‘Memoji’, Genmojis can be prompted to match the conversation you’re having with a friend. For example, if you’re talking about attending a football game, you can instantly create a Genmoji of a character with a football at its feet. The closest alternative to Genmoji right now is Meta AI. This chatbot is integrated into all of Meta’s major messaging services. It allows users to generate custom stickers by entering the relevant prompts. The only drawback is that it cannot be used in iMessage. We suggest sticking with SwiftKey’s image generator in this situation.
