Back in July, Samsung added a new smartphone to its Galaxy M series. Priced at Rs 20,000, the Samsung Galaxy M35 brings incremental updates to last year’s Galaxy M34. When we reviewed the Galaxy M34 last year, we were happy with its long-lasting battery but its waterdrop notch made it look quite dated. Samsung has replaced the notch with a punch hole cutout on the Galaxy M35 and made a few other design tweaks to elevate the device’s appearance. Under the hood, the smartphone rocks the Exynos 1380 SoC – a small upgrade compared to last year’s Exynos 1280. Interestingly, the smartphone’s biggest asset, the 6,000 mAh battery, remains unchanged. We used the device for a week to see how well the updated processor manages the battery capacity. The first thing you’ll notice about the Galaxy M35 is that it is thick. Infact, it is thicker than its predecessor in Galaxy M34 (8.8mm v 9.1mm). The massive 6,000 mAh battery pack is the primary reason behind this. It has its benefits though, as the camera cutouts do not protrude as much as they do on other Galaxy smartphones. Samsung Galaxy M35 Review: Design and Display Speaking of the camera cutouts, Samsung has gone for its signature triple camera setup on the Galaxy M35. The back is now made out of polycarbonate instead of plastic. The result is a smudge-resistant back panel that does not flex upon being pressed. The in-hand feel of the device is superior compared to the all-plastic M34. design The flat back panel curved gently towards the edges. The smartphone’s flat frame has a matte-like finish to it. The weight (222g) of the device is divided evenly. It does not feel top-heavy like most smartphones. Overall, it feels very pleasant to hold. The right edge of the frame houses the side key and the volume rocker. This side key doubles up as a fingerprint sensor. The primary smartphone, USB port, and speaker outlet are positioned on the bottom edge. The SIM card tray lies on the left edge while the secondary microphone finds its way to the top edge.

Samsung doesn’t do mediocre displays even on its budget offerings. The Galaxy M35 packs a stunning 6.6-inch Super AMOLED panel with a 120Hz refresh rate and 1,000 nits of brightness in HBM. The selfie camera is now housed in a punch-hole cutout instead of a waterdrop notch. The display is surrounded by uniform but slightly chunky bezels. The touch response is elite and unmatched by other smartphones in this price category. Our only minor complaint is that the display lacks the peak brightness to be perfectly legible under harsh sunlight. Samsung Galaxy M35 Review: Design and Display The Samsung Galaxy M35 was our primary media steaming device during the review period. We watched several titles across platforms like Netflix, Prime Video, and Disney+ Hotstar. The AMOLED display produced splendid images with rich colours and a lot of detail. The stereo speaker setup was the icing on the cake. The latter is a big improvement over the single speaker outlet on the Galaxy M34.

Samsung Galaxy M35 Review: Performance and Cameras

Powering the Samsung Galaxy M35 is the Exynos 1380 SoC. The smartphone is available in three RAM and storage variants – 6GB + 128GB (Rs 19,999), 8GB + 128GB (Rs 21,499), and 8GB + 256GB (Rs 24,499). On the Geekbench 6 app, the smartphone scored 1,007 points in the single-core test and 2,824 points in the multi-core test. In comparison, the Galaxy M34 scored 934 and 2,033 points. geekbench As a daily driver, the Galaxy M35 managed routine tasks really well. We did not encounter any issues while instant messaging, video calling, social media browsing, etc. The apps take a fraction of a second longer to load, but that is the case with every sub-Rs 20,000 smartphone. However, when it comes to general fluidity and browsing experience, the Galaxy M35 towers above its rivals. We played games like Call of Duty Mobile and Asphalts Legends Unite on the Galaxy M35 with medium to heavy graphics and had a decent time. The addition of a vapour chamber has done wonders for the smartphone’s internal heat management. The Galaxy M35 did not warm up even after 40 minutes of gaming. We did experience the odd frame drop after maxing out the in-game graphics but that isn’t a dealbreaker for a smartphone in this price range. The overall gaming experience is quite good for casual users. display Samsung Galaxy M35 runs Android 14-based OneUI 6.1 out of the box. Despite being a budget offering, the smartphone has a couple of Galaxy AI features for photo editing. You get an object eraser and an image remaster tool as a part of the native editor. Other Galaxy AI features like call translation, generative AI wallpapers, and AI photo editing are not available on this device yet. There is some bloatware on this device, but it does not push spam notifications. display Samsung has promised 4 years of major software updates and 5 years of security patches for the Galaxy M35, which is simply incredible for a smartphone in this price range. We hope that other OEMs will take note of this development and adopt it as the standard for this segment. Samsung’s Galaxy M Series is known for its amazing battery performance and the M35 does not disappoint in this regard. On moderate usage, the smartphone lasted a day and a half with ease. If you’re more conservative with your usage, you can 2 day’s worth of juice out of the 6,000 mAh battery inside this phone. During the review period, we kept the Samsung Galaxy M35’s AOD turned on at all times and used it at a 120Hz refresh rate. The only downside of the battery performance is the 25W charging speed. It takes 90 minutes to fully charge the phone. Samsung Galaxy M35 Review: Performance and Cameras Galaxy M35’s camera setup remains unchanged from last year. The triple camera layout at the back comprises a 50MP primary shooter, an 8MP ultrawide lens, and a 2MP macro sensor. The 13MP front-facing camera remains unchanged as well. The primary shooter takes good pictures in outdoor lighting conditions. The images pack a lot of details and showcase balanced colours. We would have preferred a little more contrast and dynamic range, but the overall results leave very little room for complaints. The 8MP ultrawide camera retains the balanced colours of the primary sensors but the images are a little softer. With that being said, this 8MP ultrawide lens is still one of the better-performing cameras in this segment. camera

In limited lighting conditions, the primary shooter does a good job of letting in a good amount of light. The smartphone brightens up the subject quite well. However, the pictures are visibly grainy even with the Night Mode turned on. The ultrawide lens struggles in limited lighting, which isn’t something out of the ordinary in this segment.

The Galaxy M35 takes well-focused portraits with rich colours. Its edge detection skills aren’t up there with the best phones in this category, but it certainly excels in applying a good natural blur to the images. The front-facing camera takes good selfies in natural and artificial lighting. It keeps the skin tone and texture correction to a minimum, which is something we like about the smartphone.

Verdict

The Samsung Galaxy M35 meets almost all the parameters of a good budget smartphone. Its Super AMOLED display is one of the best in the category and the 6,000 mAh battery can last up to 2 days on conservative usage. The Exynos 1380 SoC is a good processor that can handle casual gaming. The M35 is one of the rare phones in its segment to come with a dedicated cooling chamber. To top it off, the camera module on this phone takes respectable pictures in different lighting conditions. Our only gripe with the M35 is that for a ‘battery’ focused smartphone its charging speed is limited to 25W. A 90-minute charge time is way behind the industry standard in 2024.

Sony’s WF-C510 is a sleek and environmentally conscientious product, with earphones and a casing made largely of recycled plastic and completely plastic-free packaging. They feature an IPX4 water resistance certification, so they can withstand a variety of circumstances. The smaller earbuds have a smaller charging case, making them easier to slip into in a bag or pocket. The small cylindrical housing is thinner and provides up to 11 hours of battery life. When we reviewed the iQOO Z7 Pro last year, we had nothing but good things to say about its design, form factor, and gaming performance. However, the lack of an ultrawide sensor and a secondary speaker seemed like big tradeoffs even for a gaming smartphone priced under Rs 25,000. This year, iQOO has not only patched these gaps but also upgraded key aspects that its midrange Z series already excelled at. The result is a beast of a device that makes a very strong case for being the best smartphone in the sub-Rs 25,000 price category. iQOO Z9s Pro Review: Design and Display

While 2023’s iQOO Z7 Pro was designed in the mould of the Vivo V27, the Z9s Pro takes inspiration from the flagship iQOO 12. The two smartphones have a similar square-shaped camera cutout with rounded corners. The ‘Flamboyant Orange’ variant has a vegan leather back which is curved around the edges to provide a better grip. The ‘Luxe Marble’ variant has a ceramic texture, similar to iQOO 12’s ‘enamelled’ glass. iQOO Z9s Pro Review: Design and Display The glossy frame of the Z9s Pro has a metal finish and curved edges. The bottom edge of the frame houses the SIM tray, primary microphone, USB Type-C port, and speaker grille. The side key and volume rocker are placed on the right edge. Up top lies the secondary microphone. The earpiece acts as the secondary microphone. design The 6.77-inch AMOLED display has a 120Hz refresh rate and supports HDR10+. This panel can now reach a peak brightness of 4,500 nits, which is quite amazing for a smartphone in this price bracket. We used the Z9s Pro under intense direct sunlight and it easily adjusted its brightness to overcome any legibility issues. The display’s touch response is good and the accidental touches caused by the curves along the sides are intelligently nullified by the software. The in-display optical fingerprint scanner is placed lower than our preferred position but it is quite snappy and works like a charm. display The AMOLED panel produces deep, natural blacks and punchy, rich colours. Our viewing experience was further enhanced by the stereo speaker setup. The Z7 Pro not having a secondary speaker was one of the issues we had with the device, so it is nice to see that iQOO took note and made improvements. We streamed a wide range of titles across platforms like Netflix, Prime Video, and Disney+ Hotstar. The iQOO Z9s Pro held up very well and put forward a delightful viewing experience. display The Z9s Pro is rated IP64, which means it can survive minor water splashes and light rainfall without taking any damage. An IP67 rating would have been ideal, but it is one of the tradeoffs that iQOO has made to keep the price of the smartphone in check.

iQOO Z9s Pro Review: Performance and Cameras

The Z9s Pro is powered by the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 chipset, upgrading from the MediaTek Dimensity 7200 SoC on the Z7 Pro. We ran the Geekbench 6 app on the smartphone and it returned a single-core score of 1,157 points and a multi-core score of 3,141 points. In comparison, the Z7 Pro scored 1,196 and 2,657 points when we tested it last year. geekbench iQOO Z9s Pro crushes any routine tasks that you throw its way. The apps take minimal time to load and the smartphone does a good job of optimising their background usage. We tested this by loading a dozen apps on the device and switching among them. The smartphone carried out the tasks seamlessly without a hiccup. apps iQOO is one of the better gaming brands around, so we were quite excited to play titles like Call of Duty Mobile and Asphalt Legends Unite on our Z9s Pro review unit. We’re happy to report that the smartphone upholds the iQOO’s reputation as a gaming heavyweight. On medium to high graphics, the smartphone sticks to 60fps and delivers a steady gaming experience. We did not come across any lags or frame drops during our time with the device. While playing COD Mobile at 90fps, the game defaulted to low graphics. apps One of the better things about the Z9s Pro is how well it manages its internal temperature during extended gaming sessions. We noticed the first signs of heating after 50 minutes of continuous gameplay. The VC liquid cooling system ensures that the phone doesn’t feel too hot in your hands when you’re in the middle of a gaming binge. The ‘Ultra Game Mode’ unlocks a 2,000Hz touch sampling rate and offers experimental features like 4D game vibration, AI voice changer, off-screen autoplay, motion control, and more. The Android 14-based Funtouch 14 OS curates a decent software experience on the Z9s Pro. There is a fair bit of bloatware on the device and the infamous ‘Hot Apps’ and ‘Hot Games’ ads disguised as app folders are present on the home screen as well as the app drawer. You can manually remove the bloatware from the device but it does dilute the out-of-the-box software experience. iQOO Z9s Pro Review: Performance and Cameras What we like about the Functouch 14 OS is its wide range of customisation options. You can personalise your smartphone by applying touchscreen animations to the interface, tuning the ambient lighting, changing the fingerprint animations and customising other elements of the software. The Ultra Gaming Mode and Gaming Sidebar are useful software additions and are very easy to access while gaming. iQOO has also incorporated an AI eraser in its native photo editor, but it didn’t produce desirable results for us. It still has a long way to go when you compare it with Google’s Magic Eraser. iQOO Z9s Pro Review: Performance and Cameras We weren’t expecting iQOO to make any big changes to Z9s Pro’s battery capacity, so we were pleasantly surprised to find that the smartphone packs a 5,500mAh unit (compared to Z7 Pro’s 4,600mAh). On top of that, iQOO has upgraded its charging speed from 66W to 80W. During the week-long review period, we consistently got a day’s worth of battery life from the iQOO Z9s Pro even after heavy use. Our daily tasks included video calling, emailing, media streaming, instant messaging, and gaming. The 80W charger provided inside the box fully replenishes the smartphone’s battery in 50 minutes. It can reach a 50% charge in just over 20 minutes. Last year’s iQOO Z7 Pro lacked an ultrawide camera, which is never a good look for a smartphone priced at Rs 25,000. This year, iQOO has rectified this error by adding an 8MP ultrawide lens to the rear camera panel. In a bid to rev up the gaming performance of a smartphone, companies often make compromises with the camera. The iQOO Z9s Pro, however, does not play by that book. Its primary and ultrawide cameras put up a splendid performance that can match any smartphone in this price category. iQOO Z9s Pro Review: Performance and Cameras primary shooter In outdoor daylight conditions, the 50MP primary shooter takes detailed images with nicely tuned colours. They showcase a good dynamic range and an ideal contrast level. The final results are certainly more ‘social media ready’ than balanced, but that will probably appeal more to the casual user. One of the things we noticed while shooting against the sun was that the primary camera kept letting in very visible flares.
