Reports ahead of the launch pointed to a new H3 audio chip powering all of this, which would explain how Apple is squeezing better ANC meaningfully out of an open ear design that, by definition, cannot form the tight passive seal that in-ear buds rely on for half their noise cancelling work. Adaptive Audio also returns, quietly blending Transparency and ANC depending on how loud your surroundings get, and Conversation Awareness dips the volume the moment you start talking to someone nearby.
Two Models, and the Only Difference That Matters
Apple still sells two versions of AirPods 5, but the split is no longer about noise cancellation. It comes down to the case.

- AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case adds Qi and Apple Watch charger compatibility, a force sensor with volume swipe on the stem (a first for this open-ear design), and noticeably longer battery life.
On battery, Apple claims up to five hours of playback with ANC switched on for the Wireless Charging Case model, an hour longer than the outgoing AirPods 4 ANC version, stretching to roughly 22 hours with the case topped up. Both earbuds pick up better dust, sweat and water resistance too, which matters more than people admit once monsoon season or a sweaty gym session gets involved.
Siri AI and Live Translation Go Fully Hands-Free
The software side leans hard on Siri AI, which starts rolling out in beta with iOS 27 next week. Apple is pitching it as a genuinely more conversational assistant that understands personal context across messages, photos and email, so asking it to navigate to “that dinner reservation from Priya’s email” is supposed to actually work now, not just recognise the words. Users can also respond to Siri with a simple nod or head shake instead of talking out loud, which is either delightfully discreet or faintly unsettling depending on how often you talk to yourself in public.
Live Translation, meanwhile, is no longer a Pro exclusive. Apple has extended it across the entire AirPods lineup, so AirPods 5 owners can now hold a translated conversation by pressing both stems together or asking Siri to start translating, without needing to spend AirPods Pro money to get there.

How AirPods 5 Fits Into a Crowded Open Ear Market
Here is the part the press release will not tell you. Open ear earbuds with genuine active noise cancellation are still rare. Most open ear designs, including Bose’s Ultra Open and Sony’s LinkBuds line, lean on passive shaping and clever acoustics rather than true ANC, precisely because an open ear bud has no seal to work with.
