Instagram has launched a new feature named Instants to improve the sharing of vanishing content. The functionality will make it easier to use the camera faster and share unfiltered photographs that disappear once they are seen, says Meta. The feature is meant to compete directly with Snapchat, mimicking its famous features around temporary content. Beyond the function itself, a separate app called Instants is being piloted in particular regions, broadening the platform’s offerings for instant image sharing.
Similar to platforms like Snapchat and BeReal, Instagram’s Instants reflects Meta’s deliberate attempt to capture the raw and impromptu spirit of social media interactions. This feature, which appears as a “mini stack” of pictures in the bottom-right corner of the Direct Message (DM) inbox, is designed to be quickly accessible. Instants promotes a one-time sharing experience that highlights immediacy and authenticity in digital communication by encouraging users to share photographs quickly and untouched.

How It Works
- Grab a moment by tapping the little pile of photographs in the Instagram inbox or opening the Instants app.
- Capture a picture in real time; uploads from the phone’s gallery are not permitted.
- You can add a caption, but you cannot edit the picture further after you take it.
- Pick sharing options: share with Close Friends or followers you follow back.
- Recipients may respond with emojis, reply and send Instants back.
- Shared Instants appear in friends’ inboxes and disappear after being viewed.

- The “tap-to-send” function allows for quick image sending, which leads to embarrassing photographs being accidentally shared owing to the lack of a confirmation step.
- Instagram will send default push alerts to mutual followers, which might be a pain for people with a lot of friends.
- Instants is a mix of Snapchat’s vanishing photographs and BeReal’s unfiltered content – a messy experience.
- Blocking screenshots doesn’t stop someone from taking a picture of the screen with a camera, and Meta still moderates content server-side, so it doesn’t really protect your privacy.
