AMOLED Display: Everything You Need To Know About It

We bet you must have heard the term AMOLED Display innumerable times these days, especially if you’re in the research phase of buying a new smartphone. Display types have become one of the most crucial factors nowadays in the smartphone technology development arena. From manufacturers to the consumers, all take into account the display of a smartphone as one of the top criteria for determining the quality of user experience it provides.  With more and more smartphone brands opting to equip their latest smartphone models with AMOLED and Super AMOLED displays, we thought you might want to know what it actually means in the first place. Hence we are sharing all we know about what an AMOLED display is, its benefits and disadvantages, its comparison with other types of display tech and which display is better for our eyes.  Read also: Poco X4 Pro 5G with 120Hz Super AMOLED display launched in India

What is an AMOLED Display?

Starting with the AMOLED full form, it stands for Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diodes and is a type of display technology used in smartphones and even in smartwatches, laptops and PC monitors these days. To understand its functionality in making our screen viewing experience better, one would have to first know a little bit about OLED.  In a conventional LED display, the LEDs are used to simply back-light the front-facing LCD panel that produces colours and controls the brightness of the screen. OLEDs take this to the next level. They generate the LED lights by applying current to a different kind of semi-conductive material, the organic compounds, that micromanage colour control pixel by pixel, resulting in producing a very fine colour and light control as well as extreme contrast ratios.   Of course, AMOLED takes the OLED process one step even further. It puts an enhanced ‘active matrix’ layer of Thin-Film Transistors (TFTs) that gives greater control over the light emitted by OLEDs, again, pixel-by-pixel.   Now coming to the latest technology in town, as Samsung describes, Super AMOLED displays are AMOLED displays with integrated touch function. Instead of having a layer that recognizes touch on top of the screen, the layer is integrated into the screen itself.  AMOLED Display: Everything You Need To Know About It

Benefits of an AMOLED Display

  • Due to the illumination control on an individual pixel level, the colour range hence reproduced is much wider and truer. A finer colour range makes the colours of objects displayed closer to what the human eye sees naturally, giving a more life-like experience to the user than an LED display would do.
  • Due to the colour range being wide, the contrast ratio provided is also greater.
  • It is said to limit the energy drain, especially while displaying dark scenes like in PC games.
  • AMOLED displays have comparatively thinner and lighter construction and provide wider viewing angles.
  • They do not require back-lighting and have a much faster response time as compared to the traditional LCDs.

Disadvantages of an AMOLED Display

  • One of its biggest disadvantages is that its display quality degrades with time. As explained very nicely by Lenovo, this is because the organic compounds used in lighting the OLED displays tend to lose their illuminating capabilities faster than the inorganic compounds in LED-LCD displays.
  • AMOLED displays are more prone to screen burn-in, owing to the overuse of some OLEDs due to the pixel-by-pixel illumination process.
  • AMOLED displays are costly as compared to other display technologies.
  • You cannot see an AMOLED display screen under direct sunlight.

AMOLED vs LED vs LCD: Which Display is Better For Eyes?

AMOLED vs LED vs LCD- Which display is better for eyes? The constant tussle between AMOLED vs LED vs LCD display is never-ending. Each one has its own pros and cons. However, when it comes to the question of which one is better for the eyes, it is important to understand first what actually harms them. Digital devices emit ‘blue light’ that is the main culprit here for all kinds of eye problems caused due to prolonged screen time. This especially has an even more significant impact in the case of smartphones, since the distance between our eyes and smartphone screens can be quite less.  All the different types of displays discussed above do their job, and for that matter, do it quite well. However, more than the technology, it is this blue light, in addition to the brightness levels that you are exposed to, which needs to be tackled in order to protect your eyesight.  What is recommended is to activate the blue light filter that is provided in some smartphones, and avoid using high brightness levels as much as possible to avoid eye strains. In case your smartphone does not provide the blue light filter option, there are even anti-glare glasses available in the market that are specially designed to protect your eyesight from digital eye strain.  In case there are any other ways you know of, which can be used to protect our eyes from getting damaged from prolonged screen time, let us know in the comments section below. We would also love to hear which one of the display types mentioned above do you prefer to use. For the latest gadget and tech news, and gadget reviews, follow us on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. YouTube timed reactions feature launched, allowing users to share a reaction at an exact moment in a video

YouTube has begun the trials of the timed reactions feature on its mobile apps. Users will be able to react to a specific moment in a video with up to eight emojis on the Google-owned video streaming platform. As previously stated, the company is conducting YouTube timed reactions trials, so the final outcome may change as a result of user feedback. YouTube has launched the timed reactions experiment, which gives you the option to share a reaction (smiley face, confetti, etc.) at a specific point in a video. As of now, it is being tested on a small number of channels. While announcing the feature the Google-owned platform said, “We wanted to test out similar features after hearing such positive feedback about the timed comments beta feature (where you can add and view comments for specific moments in videos).” YouTube timed reactions You can react and see crowd reactions if you’re watching a video that’s part of this experiment by opening the video’s comment section and tapping into the reaction panel. The test will also show you which moments other viewers are reacting to (all reactions will be anonymous – however, YouTube won’t reveal who sent them). Multiple sets of reactions are being put to the test and depending on how the experiment goes, YouTube will add or remove reactions as it may undergo several improvements during the trial and before it is finally released to all the users. As we said earlier the company is running the trials of YouTube timed reactions so the final outcome may see changes as a result of user feedback. Recently YouTube announced the release of new health features in India to allow users to identify authoritative information about health. New health source information panels have been added to the video streaming platform, which will label videos from reputable health organisations and government institutions. This can be used to determine which data sources are reliable. Furthermore, the Google-owned video platform has added health content shelves to search results, highlighting videos from reputable sources. Users in Brazil, India, and Japan will notice new features alongside health-related searches and videos. It’s worth noting that both the new wellness features will be available in Hindi and English. YouTube has also partnered with some of the world’s leading health organisations to create video content and make it easier for users to find authoritative health information. POCO M4 Pro 5G Review: A Decent Smartphone In Its Price Range

Chinese smartphone brand Xiaomi has been successful in creating a space for itself in the Indian markets over the past decade. According to Statista, Xiaomi was the largest vendor by market share (28%) in the Indian smartphone market for the period September 2020 to September 2021. It also took the second position in the switching preference of smartphone brands by owners across India in 2021, standing at 16%. It sells smartphones under the brand names MI, Redmi and POCO, speaking of which, we recently got our hands on one of its latest released smartphones. Below is provided a complete review of the all-new POCO M4 Pro 5G.

POCO M4 Pro 5G Review: Design and Display

Front Display-Xiaomi POCO M4 Pro 5G Review Whether it’s the Cool Blue, Power Black or the POCO Yellow model, all three come sitting in a bright yellow rectangular box. Now if you also order the yellow coloured POCO M4 Pro 5G model like us, we bet the matching bright yellow colour of almost the entire contents in the POCO packaging will make your mood all colourful as it did ours. If you hold the entire box in hand, you’ll notice that it carries significant weight. And you will figure out upon opening the package why is it so. The M4 Pro doesn’t come alone, but with a range of accessories. Side Frame- Xiaomi POCO M4 Pro 5G Review The first thing your eyes will land on after lifting the lid is the front of the smartphone itself, showing off its shiny black IPS LCD 90Hz display protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3. Lifting the phone up will make you realise that even with a 6.6 inches large display size and an 84.8% screen-to-body ratio, its body weighs quite light. The volume and the fingerprint sensor-enabled power button lay on its right side, a c-type port and a 3.5mm headphone jack lay alongside one out of the pair of its stereo speakers on the bottom with the other one on top. The SIM card tray lies on the left side of its plastic frame.  Back- Xiaomi POCO M4 Pro 5G Review Flip it over and you will see a golden yellow shiny plastic back, which if you check upon touching, has a matt finish to it. On the top taking a quarter of the entire back’s space lies its dual-camera system with an LED flashlight neatly placed inside the black section highlighting the classic POCO design. The POCO brand along with the camera resolution and AI specs engraved in addition is surely hard to miss.  Package- Xiaomi POCO M4 Pro 5G Review Unlike Apple and Samsung, the POCO M4 Pro 5G does come with its own USB cable and a 33W adapter, both white in colour. Not just that, you are also provided with a transparent rubber back cover and a quick start guide with the smartphone package. Upon bringing the phone to life, its 1,080×2,400 pixel 399ppi density FHD+ display will definitely instil a sense of excitement as well as curiosity in you to explore your brand new smartphone device from all its nooks and corners, inside-out.  Home Screen- Xiaomi POCO M4 Pro 5G Review Read also: Samsung Galaxy S22 Review: The Ultimate Quality Smartphone of 2022 However, users of devices like Samsung would feel the display could’ve been slightly better, due to being accustomed to using AMOLED display smartphones, which the POCO M4 Pro 5G misses out on.

POCO M4 Pro 5G Review: Performance And Cameras

Elaborating further on the POCO M4 Pro 5G specs, it supports 5G networking, dual 5G SIM cards, Wi-Fi as well as Bluetooth 5.1. It comes with an Octa-Core CPU with a clock speed of up to 2.4GHz, a MediaTek Dimensity 810 CPU (6nm) chipset and an ARM Mali-G57 MC2 GPU. It comes with a 5000mAh battery which can survive for up to 2 days in case of mediocre usage and for up to 1 day upon heavy usage after a single charge and supports fast charging. It offers its variants in 4GB/6GB/8GB RAM and 64GB/128GB/256GB storage options.  App Drawer- Xiaomi POCO M4 Pro 5G Review However, one misses the latest Android 12 OS, as the POCO M4 Pro 5G comes pre-installed with Android 11. You might also notice certain applications that come pre-installed on the smartphone to not be up-to-date with their latest versions. The update may have to be done manually. The overall look and feel of the display, app icons and their arrangement appear decent. POCO provides the facility of categorising apps in your app drawer according to their functionality or domain, which you can customize according to your preferences as well.  Camera Read also: Apps Not Updating on Android 11? Here’s How to Fix The Issue The all-new M4 Pro 5G comes with a 50MP main camera, an 8MP ultrawide camera as well as a 16MP selfie camera. Videos can be shot from the rear camera up to 1080p with a 60fps setting, while the front camera can record up to 1080p with 30fps only. There are 3 zoom modes, a 0.6x, 1x and 2x zoom. Performance-wise, the rear camera works quite well overall, with a fine colour range. However, the front camera works even better than the rear one and is able to capture more vivid selfies.  Camera Modes The camera comes with numerous different modes. However, what can be considered one of its USPs is its AI camera, AI watermark mode and 50MP camera mode. The AI automatically modifies the camera according to the scene in the frame, capturing more details and thus enhancing the image quality, whereas the 50MP camera mode captures images with more vibrant colours. Its night mode also works well but is not as efficient in extreme low light conditions. Moreover, the sharpness and saturation in the night mode capture also seem to get affected.

The POCO M4 Pro 5G stereo speaker system appears loud on hearing, working decently in noisy environments as well. Streaming videos, movies and tv series is efficient, while gaming graphics appear warm and decent. Movements and reflexes are smooth while the smartphone doesn’t heat up as easily.
Gaming

Verdict

Overall, the POCO M4 Pro 5G is a decent smartphone in its price range, not too extraordinary and not even as bad. However, if you’re a person very particular about having a superior quality fluid AMOLED display, we recommend you assess other options as well that are available in the market. Upon testing its performance, it scores 1797 on Geekbench and 353663 on AnTutu. The POCO M4 Pro 5G price in India starts at Rs 14,999, which does make it a worthy buy.

POCO M4 Pro 5G Pros

  • Large Display Screen
  • Strong Front Camera With Effective AI
  • Can Withstand Mediocre To Heavy Usage Without Getting Heated Up Easily

POCO M4 Pro 5G Cons

  • No AMOLED Display
  • No Android 12 Based OS
  • Night Mode Not As Effective, Sharpness Gets Compromised

Oppo Enco Air2 review: Bombastic sound in a budget

Oppo has been on a launching spree in 2022. They have launched a flurry of smartphones and audio devices. Out of its audio range, we got our hands on the latest audio earplugs. If you are in the market looking for a wireless pair of earphones good for both music and gaming, then you need to read the rest of the Oppo Enco Air2 review below.

Oppo Enco Air2 review: Design

When it comes to design, Oppo has tried to do something new. Unlike the usual pillbox, every other wireless earphone comes in, Oppo Enco Air2 come in a half translucent (and half white) case. They call it Jelly case lid, which does add to the show. The case also has a single LED that indicates charging and BT connectivity. The USB Type-C charging port is located at the bottom, but you do not get a charging cable in the box. Oppo-Enco-Air2-case When you pull the audio earplugs out, they do resemble the Apple Airpods. But they do come with an identity of their own. The charging points and the microphones can be seen at the bottom of each stem.  These are also dressed in glossy white with each having touch-sensitive areas at the top of the stems. By double or triple tapping you can skip tracks, take or end calls, press and hold to increase or decrease volume. All in all, we found the design of the Oppo Enco Air2 to be nice. Oppo Enco Air2 review: Performance

Coming the fun part of the review, its resonance. The Oppo Enco Air2 is built to give you superior audio output and it clearly shows. The TWS earphones have large 13.4 mm Titanised audio drivers in each earplug that gave us a superb sound experience. The bass is punchy, the vocals are clear, and the mids/lows are almost perfect. Highs could have been better, but are not a deal-breaker in the price bracket. Oppo-Enco-Air2-review-2 These are made for gaming as well. Supporting Bluetooth 5.2, Oppo Enco Air2 support low latency gaming. So we put it to the test and played BGMI and COD: Mobile. To our amazement, they work really well. The sound to shot audio was on point. We enjoyed the gaming experience with them. And we enjoyed the Netflix experience with them, even more. The sound is immersive. The game mode can be turned on with compatible smartphones by triple tapping the earphones. Read Also: Oppo Enco X true wireless noise-cancelling earphones review Moving to the battery life, this is where one would want more. The company says, the Oppo Enco Air2 can last for 4 hours on a single charge, however, for us, they lasted for a little over 3.25 hours. But they charge quickly too and up to 24 hours of additional battery life can be extracted using the charging case. Oppo-Enco-Air2-review-1 BT work up to 10 meters and that is about right. The signal drops a little if you have a wall or two in between. We took them out for a jog in the park and only once, did one of them plonk out. Otherwise, they stayed put and we never felt that we have to be extra careful with them. Over that, the Oppo Enco Air2 are IPX4 certified. So, light splashed and sweat will not ruin them. Also at just 3.5 grams each, these audio earphones are aptly named as “Air” 2.

Verdict

So, are they worth buying at Rs 1,999? That is a definite yes. If you are looking for something that can provide good sound or you can game with, then your search ends here. The battery life could have been better, just keep the case handy and you will be back up and listening to your fav tunes in no time.

Messenger shortcut commands The members of your chat will not receive any notification of your message if you use /silent (also available on Instagram as “@silent”). Sending a message with /silent removes the fear of disturbing someone during their off-hours or interrupting them with a non-urgent pop-up notification. The Messenger app will be introducing several new shortcuts in the coming weeks that will help you increase your efficiency in Messenger for both practical and entertaining purposes. Messenger’s new /pay shortcut makes it even easier to send and receive money right in your one-on-one Messenger chats (coming soon to iOS and Android for Messenger fans in the US). Simply type /pay to securely send or request money with no fees – ideal for quickly paying a friend for dinner or getting reimbursed for a ride. Messenger shortcut commands Soon iOS users will be able to use the /gif shortcut to quickly find and send the perfect GIF – simply type /gif and your chosen topic to see your gif options appear. Rather than struggling to type each emoticon (or having to find it online to copy and paste), simply type /shrug or /tableflip into your message to add your preferred emoticons. This feature will be rolled out to iOS soon.
