ASUS ROG Phone 5 Review: The gaming beast is back, better, and stronger

0
Asus’s ROG smartphone series has made somewhat of a cult following for itself. Gamers around the globe swear by it and every year they wait with great anticipation for the upgraded version. Last year we saw ASUS ROG Phone 3, which was excellent at the price point. This time the version 5 has been launched and not the 4. So, what happened to version 4? Well, in the Chinese language if you pronounce ‘four’ it means ‘death’, hence is inauspicious. This is why you will not find that version in any Chinese/Taiwanese gadget/tech or other industry. We got to play with the smartphone for some time and is it better than the previous version? Let us find out, this ASUS ROG Phone 5 review you all need to read before buying.

ASUS ROG Phone 5 Design and Display

Asus has been designing some great looking smartphones when it comes to the ROG series. ASUS ROG Phone 5 is no different. The smartphone comes with a large 6.78-inch display upfront with a larger bezel on top, rather than on the bottom. This is done because the selfie camera and other sensors are placed here, so you end up getting a pure full-screen experience without a selfie camera notch or cut out hindering the experience.
The screen is protected using Corning Gorilla Glass Victus, which is the best in class toughened glass for smartphones. The sides have a metal frame running across. On the right side, you will find the returning pressure-sensitive air triggers along with the power and volume rocker keys. On the left side, you get the SIM tray, a connector for accessories like the fan and a USB Type-C charging port. At the bottom, you will find the second USB Type-C charging port and the 3.5mm jack, which makes a comeback as it was omitted in the previous edition. At the top, there is nothing besides another microphone. Talking about which, there are 5 of them on the ASUS ROG Phone 5 so that when you are gaming your voice ends up going to your teammates without any problems. Coming to the back of the ASUS ROG Phone 5, the smartphone has become much smoother. We say this because now a single sheet of CGG (Corning Gorilla Glass) 3 comes on it. But here is the fun part about it, you do get a familiar rear camera bump, but at the bottom you get a ROG logo LED panel, which has a lot of bling value as we all know how much gamers love to show off their rigs and smartphones. This comes to life when you are gaming or are in the X-mode. ASUS ROG Phone 5 front Coming back to the display, ASUS ROG Phone 5 has a 144Hz AMOLED display that supports up to 1,200 nits of brightness and HDR 10+. FHD+ is the resolution that strides in with the smartphone. We loved every bit of it. We found the display to be bright and vivid. Gaming, as well as movies, experience on it, was top notch. Something that we have seen earlier on Samsung and Apple devices only. The display gets an A+ on our sheets as the graphics are lively, characters are crisp, and the screen does not wash out even under direct sunlight. We played a few Netflix shows on it and they all look good. ASUS ROG Phone 5 can manage dark scenes and fast-paced action scenes with extreme ease.

Performance and cameras

Now there is a lot to say about the ASUS ROG Phone 5 performance and cameras. We can write a thesis on it; however, we will try to give you as much of it in the shortest and simplest manner. But first, let us quickly get the tech specs out of the way. The smartphone comes screaming in with the top-of-the-line Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 chipset. This is the absolute best when it comes to premium performance and gaming capabilities. The is partnered with Adreno 660 graphics. With that, you get 8, 12 or 16 GB of RAM. The one we are testing has 12GB RAM and 256GB storage. The 8GB RAM version comes with 128GB storage, the 16GB RAM model also comes with 256GB storage. The storage is UFS 3.1 supported. For audio, there is stereo sound available as there are twin loudspeakers available on the ASUS ROG Phone 5. These are optimised for the best gaming sound with DTS:X so that you always end up getting chicken dinner in PUBG. A 6,000 mAh battery (3,000 + 3,000 mAh) is installed in the smartphone that gave us almost 2 days of battery life when we used it nominally with just 30 mins of gaming. But if you do game a lot on it, then you will get less than a day of battery. Talking about which, we played a lot of games on it. Everything from COD: Mobile to Asphalt 9: Legends was played on it and we never got a chance to complain. The graphics are superb and there is no lag on it. However, the smartphone does get a bit warm when you play for more than 30 mins. Thanks to Wi-Fi 6 and multi-point antennas, we rarely got any packet drops. The touch response of the air-triggers has also become better, and it did give us the edge in battle royale games such as PUBG: Mobile. Armoury crate app also comes installed on the ASUS ROG Phone 5. This will enable you to tune the phone for each game type. A very good tool if you play different genres of games on your smartphone. Over that, you also get Game Genie for in-game tools. This will enable you to stop alerts, calls etc when you are gaming so you end up getting no-interruption gaming. This can be brought by swiping right from the left edge of the phone when gaming. It also shows you the temperature of the smartphone. The operating system on the ASUS ROG Phone 5 is Android 11, which comes with ASUS’s ROG skin on top. This gives the users a very clean UI experience. However, it is not totally bloatware-free. Thankfully, much of it can be uninstalled.asus-rog-phone-5-rear-cameras Coming to the cameras of the ASUS ROG Phone 5, the handset comes with 3 cameras at the back. These include a primary 64MP wide, 13MP ultrawide and 5MP sensor for macro shots. The primary camera is the best out of the three. We got some very good shots from it in the day as well as night. For close-up shots, we did turn on the LED flash, which enabled us to get better details from portrait shots at night. Ultrawide angle shots we were not in awe of, as the details did come down a lot and smudged edges were apparent. The same is the case with Macro shots. 3 out of ten shots were not very useful. So, you need to get a hang of it or take multiple shots of the subject and keep the best one. asus-rog-phone-5-front-camera 8K video recording can be shot on the smartphone at 30 FPS. However, we did like the 4K at 60FPS to be our preferred setting for videos. The front camera is driven by a 24MP sensor and it is exceptional for taking selfies during the day. During low-light, you do get decent shots too, a night not so much. The best is to use the rear camera with LED flash for the best results. But ASUS ROG Phone 5 is not built primarily for photographers. It is built for gaming and it excels in the department. We loved the performance of the smartphone when it came to video games.

Verdict

All in all, the ASUS ROG Phone 5 is one of the best munitions you can own if you are a semi or a professional gamer. At Rs 57,999 for the 12GB variant, Asus is asking for a shiny penny, however, we do believe it is worth every penny. If you want the absolute latest with top-of-the-line features for gaming,  then this smartphone is the right choice for you. In case you are looking for the lesser expensive version of the smartphone, its base variant starts at Rs 49,999, where you get 8GB RAM. Pros: Excellent design Superb gaming experience Smooth performance Cons: Ultra-Wide camera could have been better Price will not be appreciated by all. Google to roll out 25 new multi-skin toned handshake emojis by 2022

The tech giant, Google, has introduced a set of new multi-skin toned handshake emojis to shed light on gender diversity and inclusion. It has launched about 25 new variations of the handshake emoji with different skin tones. So one can change the skin tone of both the left and right hand. The new multi-skin toned handshake emoji should appear in the next release, Emoji 14.0, meaning you should see it by 2022. As per the latest Google blog post, Jennifer Daniel has approved 25 possible combinations of different skin tones shaking hands emojis. Although the regular, one-tone handshake emoji already existed soon the user can access two new emoji hands (a right hand in all the various skin tone shades and left in the various skin tone shades). Google to roll out 25 new multi-skin toned handshake emojis by 2022

Jennifer Daniel, the company’s creative director for emoji has submitted the paperwork for Unicode to consider the addition of the multi-skin toned handshake. Which includes how 25 possible combinations of different skin tones shaking hands could be created.

Jennifer explained that encoding it all would be time-consuming; creating a new emoji can take up to two years. It’s like a language, with a set of rules that are communicated from a keyboard to a computer so that what you see on your screen looks the way it’s supposed to. This is called binary — or all the ones and zeros behind the scenes that make up everything you see on the internet.  Jennifer further explained that when we want to send a 🤦,  which maps to U+1f926, that code point must be understood on the other end regardless of what device the recipient is using. So when one emoji can come in different forms — like with gender or skin tone options — the coding gets more complex.  So to make it less complicated, a subcommittee was created that includes volunteers, all of whom are generous with their expertise and time. The blog post also notes that, first, Jennifer looked at existing emojis to see if there were any that could be combined to generate all 25 skin tone combinations. These emojis were expected to land on the devices in 2021 but because of COVID-19, all Unicode deployments were delayed six months. But now these should appear in the next release, Emoji 14.0, meaning you should see it appear in 2022 in a smartphone near you. Facebook promises to roll out end-to-end encryption feature for Messenger and Instagram direct by 2022

The popular social media platform, Facebook, is currently working on improving its user privacy and security as it has been one of the major concerns being faced by the users. Apart from WhatsApp the company also owns Instagram, which has millions of users across the globe. Nor FB Messenger or Instagram offers end-to-end encrypted chats by default, which has always been surrounded by controversies and received backlash. So in order to place confidence in its users soon, the company will in the future roll out the end-to-end encryption for Messenger and Instagram direct. Facebook has promised to offer end-to-end encrypted chats by default for Messenger and Instagram direct by 2022. The company via its blog post said, “Over the past year, we introduced a number of privacy and safety tools, including more privacy settings, an app lock, safer message requests, message forwarding limits and more. We’re also working hard to bring default end-to-end encryption to all of our messaging services. This will protect people’s private messages and mean only the sender and recipient, not even us, can access their messages. While we expect to make more progress on default end-to-end encryption for Messenger and Instagram Direct this year, it’s a long-term project and we won’t be fully end-to-end encrypted until sometime in 2022 at the earliest. Moreover, the safety features we’ve already introduced are designed to work with end-to-end encryption, and we plan to continue building strong safety features into our services.” In addition to this, it has also hosted a virtual workshop with experts in privacy, safety, human rights and consumer protection for a discussion on the future of messaging. During this workshop, Facebook addressed some of the issues guided by input from outside experts.  Facebook also said that “We need to find a balance of safety, privacy, and security. There is a clear need to balance the privacy and security of people’s messages with maintaining a safe environment and providing data to law enforcement in response to potential real-world harms. We discussed tools that can protect people’s privacy while also preventing harm from happening in the first place, using behavioural signals, traffic data or user reports rather than access to the content of all messages. There was no consensus on a recommended approach, but experts encouraged more consultation to help strike an appropriate balance.” It is worth noting that even the most used messaging app Whatsapp offers end-to-end encryption chats by default. And when everyone is using these messaging app to stay connected with loved ones through private messaging, calling and video chats, encryption is even more important due to the pandemic crisis all over the globe. This has also surged the use of private messaging apps, which has brought important public policy considerations to the forefront. End-to-end encryption has become so common that it is being provided by almost every app and surprisingly none of these FB apps offers end-to-end encrypted chats. By bringing End-to-end encryption to Messenger and Instagram direct Facebook wants to win the trust of its users. Although we might see a bit of delay in the release of this feature as it may be caught in a political storm. Because what the governments think is that this would give a safe place to criminals for their communications as no one can figure out what the encrypted text means and only Facebook will have the access to the decrypted message.  Also, the question arises does the governments really care about crime or would it serve a bigger agenda by spying on people. So encryption has always been under a lot of controversy as it can be both good and bad as it can also be used for surveillance.  For the latest gadget and tech news, and gadget reviews, follow us on TwitterFacebook and Instagram. For newest tech & gadget videos subscribe to our YouTube Channel. Moreover, this phone has the ability to switch between 60fps and 30fps frame rates in 4K. So considering the pricing, specification and DxOMark camera rankings Xiaomi’s latest premium smartphone has left behind S21 Ultra and OnePlus 9 Pro to become our most preferred choice for you in this price bracket. “External” label to email threads now being added to Gmail to identify emails with recipients outside your organization

Google is adding up a new “External” label to email threads that include recipients outside your organization. This means now the emails received from outside your Google Workplace organisation will be labelled as External. This comes with the existing external recipient warning banner, which is displayed when responding to emails sent from outside of your organization.  As per the latest blog post by the tech giant the “External” label will be visible on Gmail on the web and Android devices. However, the admins will have access to turn these warning labels on or off for their organization. mail shows these alerts when your users get a message from an external email address, and when they reply to a message or conversation with an external address. According to Google, the “External” label and the reply warning banner and label are helpful reminders for users to treat external messages with caution. This would be helpful in avoiding the unintentional sharing of confidential information with the recipients outside of their organization. They also remind people to treat external messages with caution. Whereas the secondary and alias domains are exempted from being labelled as “External”.  To get started, the admin should first sign in to their Google Admin console. It should be noted that you should sign in using an administrator account, not your current account. Then from the Admin console Home page, go to Apps>Google Workspace>Gmail>End User Access. To see End User Access, scroll to the bottom of the Gmail page. Now select your top-level organization and scroll to the Warn about external recipients setting.
