For years we have been seeing custom designs of smartphones like the iPhone or OnePlus by various designers with transparent back panels. This always made us wonder why the makers/companies don’t do the same in the first place? Also, when will we see gadgets with transparent panels? Half a decade later a company did hear our thoughts and here comes a pair of TWS earphones by Nothing (a fresh company started by Carl Pei, co-founder of OnePlus) called Ear (1). The audio earplugs are not fully transparent with only the stems being see-through, they do come close to what we had pictured. We got to play around with these hot-off-the-press earphones, and this is Nothing Ear 1 review you should not miss.
Nothing Ear 1 review: Design
The company has thought about the presentation a lot. Starting from the packaging to the actual earphones we can see a lot of sleepless nights and effort. While strip pulling open the card box exteriors, it reminded us of the Wrigley chewing gum wrapper. In the same manner, you get a red pull apart strip to get to the yummy treasure inside. Once you unbox, you get to see a great looking transparent box of the Nothing Ear 1 earphones.
The top lid has a magnetic clip that shuts easily. Open it and you get to see the wonderfully made Nothing Ear 1 earphones that weigh 4.7 grams. The case weighs another 57.4 grams over it, which also has the battery inside in a sparkling white encasing. Both the earphones are magnetic that are held in place in each cavity in the case (securely). As said, the stem of both the audio earplugs are transparent and one can see a lot of the interior. The top part of the earphones is white in colour with a silicone tip attachment to hold them in place firmly in the user’s ear.
Talking about which, the Nothing Ear 1 come with 3 pairs of silicone ear tips. Small, medium (already on the earphones) and large ones come in the box. With these users also get a USB charging cable. One can use any USB charger to charge the audio plugs via the case. The case has a USB Type-C charging port, a button to turn on BT pairing and an LED light to tell you the battery life etc.
Nothing Ear 1 review: Performance
Coming from the house of Carl Pei, we had very high expectations from Nothing Ear 1. Did it deliver? On most counts, yes, but we can see some teething issues, which we are sure will become better over time. So, let’s talk about the performance of these sound earphones. They have 11.6mm dynamic audio drivers inside the shell that can produce some groovy tunes at a very high volume.
The sound is very good, and bass is something the company has worked on. We for one had very little to complain about here. But when compared to the already dominant Sony and Bose, these were a step or two behind. Nonetheless, that is not a bad thing, as the price segment these are in. You can buy one Nothing Ear 1 for each member of your family, in the same price you get one of Sony’s or Bose’s ANC earphones. The ANC (active noise cancellation) is there in Nothing Ear 1 too, but it is not the best. We would keep it in the teething issue box for now and not emphasise on it much. One can easily pair them with any mobile or even a laptop.
Users get features like in-ear detection, IPX 4 splash resistance and apps for both iOS and Android devices. The app has a couple of equalizer functions and enables the users to customise taps or triple taps. While we are on the topic, the touch sensitivity of the stem is quite nice. Users can slide the finger from top to bottom or vice versa to control the volume on (both) the Nothing Ear 1 earphones. In the same way double tap to pause or play the music and triple tap to skip tracks. Users can also press and hold to turn ANC on or off. Bluetooth 5.2, A2DP, AVRCP and HFP are supported here.
The battery life of the Nothing Ear 1 could have been better. They lasted for 4.25 hours for us after being fully charged. The box does provide additional up to 34 hours of charge, if ANC is off, or 24 hours if ANC is on. But a couple of hours on the earphones itself would have been better for the music of video bingers.
Verdict
All in all, Nothing Ear 1 at Rs 5,999 are somewhat of a disruptor in the Indian market. Good sound, exceptional looks, and almost good ANC in a sub 6K price bracket is worth a pick-up. If you are looking for new earphones that look good and sound great, your search ends here.

The cameras are one of the most important aspects of smartphones these days, therefore refuting the need to carry an extra camera. Till now 100MP has been the highest resolution a smartphone camera could hold but Samsung has now introduced a 200MP image sensor. The company has announced a new range of camera sensors for smartphones with a resolution higher than any being sold in the market. The ISOCELL HP1 200-megapixel (MP) image sensor has 0.64μm pixels. Whereas the 50-megapixel ISOCELL GN5 takes on all all-directional focusing Dual Pixel Pro technology with two photodiodes in a single 1.0μm pixel.Duckhyun Chang, executive vice president of sensor business at Samsung Electronics said at the launch said, “Samsung has been pioneering ultrafine pixel technologies that are taking high-resolution image sensors to the next level. With the ISOCELL HP1 that is breaking barriers and ISOCELL GN5 bringing ultrafast autofocus, Samsung will continue to lead the trend for next-generation mobile imaging technologies.”The South Korean giant is expected to use the ISOCELL HP1 sensor on the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra which is capable of supporting 200MP of resolution. It is based on the company’s latest 0.64μm-sized pixels. The newly launched mobile image sensor is for the purpose of low-light photography, as it features an all-new ChameleonCell technology. This is a pixel-binning technology that makes use of a two-by-two, four-by-four or full pixel layout depending on the environment. In low light situations, the ISOCELL HP1 reconstructs into a 12.5MP image sensor with large 2.56μm pixels by homogenizing 16 neighbouring pixels at once. As per Samsung, the entirely new 2.56μm pixel is capable of more light absorption and sensitivity, producing brighter and clearer photos indoors or in the evening. While in a well-lit environment or when outdoors the sensor’s 200-million pixels can capture ultra-high-definition photography on mobile devices. In addition to this Samsung’s ISOCELL HP1 is capable of recording 8K videos at 30 frames-per-second (fps) with minimum loss in the field of view. This sensor can also bin four neighbouring pixels to bring the resolution down to 50MP or 8,192 x 6,144 to take 8K (7,680 x 4,320) videos without the need to crop or scale down the full image resolution. On the other hand, the 50MP ISOCELL GN5 is the industry’s first 1.0μm image sensor to equip Dual Pixel Pro. This technology is an all-directional autofocusing technology that significantly augments its autofocusing capabilities. This technology places two photodiodes, the smallest in the industry, within each 1.0μm pixel of the sensor either horizontally or vertically to recognize pattern changes in all directions. Samsung’s ISOCELL GN5 autofocusing speeds up to produce sharper images in all lighting conditions. This mobile image sensor also utilizes Samsung’s proprietary pixel technology to apply Front Deep Trench Isolation (FDTI) on a Dual Pixel product. Without being affected by the microscopic photodiode size, FDTI allows each photodiode to absorb and hold more light information, improving the photodiodes’ full-well capacity (FWC) and decreasing crosstalk within the pixel.

Microblogging platform Twitter introduced a new safety feature called Safety Mode on its platform. This safety function will be available to iOS, Android, and Twitter.com. As of now, the functionality is available to a limited number of users to block accounts for using potentially harmful language.Twitter’s new Safety Mode is now rolling out and aims to reduce disruptive interactions. The safety feature is being released to a small feedback group on iOS, Android, and Twitter.com, beginning with accounts that have English-language settings enabled. This enables users to temporarily block accounts for seven days for using potentially harmful language — such as insults or hateful remarks — or sending repetitive and uninvited replies or mentions. The Safety Mode on Twitter can be easily turned on from the setting. When this functionality is enabled the company’s systems assess the likelihood of a negative engagement by considering both the Tweet’s content and the relationship between the Tweet author and replier. “Our technology takes existing relationships into account, so accounts you follow or frequently interact with will not be auto blocked,” as stated by the social media platform. As per Twitter if someone’s tweet is found to be harmful or uninvited will be autoblocked, meaning they’ll temporarily be unable to follow your account, see your Tweets, or send the user Direct Messages. However, the users will be able to find info related to the Tweets flagged through Safety Mode and view the details of temporarily blocked accounts at any time. Also when each Safety Mode period ends they will receive a notification recapping this information. With the launch of Safety Mode, Twitter attempts to protect the individual on the receiving end of Tweets by reducing the prevalence and visibility of harmful remarks. Like we told you earlier this function is being tested on a limited number of users but Twitter is working to make this feature available to everyone.
