Facebook Messenger gets a new ‘quoted reply’ feature similar to WhatsApp

0
Facebook has been adding new features to its web and other platforms to make the user experience more pleasing and easier-to-use. And now the company has added an ability to quote and reply to specific messages within a conversation in Facebook Messenger, this new feature is much like WhatsApp’s. According to a report by VentureBeat, with the addition of this new feature to Messenger, the users now can hold down an individual message in any conversation to ‘quote’ the message. Once held down, the user can then either add a reaction to the message or reply to it with a new ‘reply’ button. Once chosen the ‘reply’ option, the user will then be quoting the specific message he wants to reply as the message will be highlighted with a bubble and the user’s reply will go below it. This new feature will make it easier for the users to understand what the other user is replying to and what’s the actual context. This new feature of Messenger will be helpful in group chats where the chats move fast.  The users can understand and follow the conversation even between the other users chats. Although this is not a new feature as we have already seen this feature in WhatsApp, but the addition of it to FB Messenger is a welcome one.
Earlier we saw that the social giant added a ‘remove sent messages’ feature, which lets the user delete the text message sent by them to other users. After that the platform added a ‘dark mode’ feature that makes the bright appearance of the Messenger app turn to black, this feature was added to help the users have less strain on their eyes. And since most of the popular social platforms already have a ‘dark theme’ on them, the social giant Facebook’s addition of the mode to their platform comes late. The addition to Messenger comes after Facebook’s announcement of integrating all of its three platforms into one – WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger. But the announcement was received with heavy criticism from the users after which the social giant cancelled its thoughts about the integration. But Facebook then went on to expand this idea in other ways as it outlined the ‘interoperability across its platforms’, which is one of its many goals. And the addition of one of the features from WhatsApp seems to be another step closer to achieving the integration.

T-series vs PewDiePie: There seems to be no end to this battle

0
In the online battle between the Indian entertainment and film production channel T-series and Felix Kjellberg’s PewDiePie, their specific subscribers count has reached more than 90 million. And with it, both the YouTube channels have become two of the only channels to reach a count of 90 million subscribers. Since the beginning, PewDiePie has been winning over the Indian T-series but on March 20, the T-series channel had won with more subscribers count. But that victory didn’t last long for T-series as soon Kjellberg’s channel took over once again and took the win in his favour. It should be noted that the rivalry between the two channels to become the No. 1 channel on YouTube has been going on since the mid-2018. Earlier, the Swedish content creator Felix Kjellberg had reigned supreme over YouTube with the most number of subscribers count on the platform. Kjellberg’s PewDiePie has been one of the most subscribed channels on YouTube for six years, until now.
The instantaneous rise of the Indian entertainment channel – T-series – on YouTube has been a constant threat to PewDiePie’s supremacy. Earlier, at the start of 2018, the Indian record label had around 30 million subscribers on YouTube. But since price of 4G data was reduces, and YouTube made its way to some feature phones, T-series’ channel has grown dramatically. And now it stands at the top of YouTube being one of the most subscribed channels in the history of YouTube, with the other being PewDiePie as both the channels have reached more than 90 million subscribers. These numbers are a first for both the channels and the platform itself. There have been several occurrences where both the channels and people associated with them had dissed the other channels. But it just added fuel to the fire which got them more attention and subscribers count. T-series is owned by Gulshan Kumar’s son Bhushan Kumar and till now there had been more than three times where the record label’s channel overtook Kjellberg’s PewDiePie. The first time it overtook PewDiePie was on February 22 for about 8 minutes, second was on March 9 for 8 minutes again, the third was on March 13 for few moments. The fourth and current occurrence happened today on March 20, for about a minute the record label’s channel had overtaken Kjellberg’s PewDiePie. The battle between the Indian T-series and Swedish Kjellberg’s PewDiePie is not over and by April 2019 both the channels might reach 100 million subscribers. With that number they will set new records and become the only two channels to reach 100 million subscribers.

Motorola One Vision to come with 48MP primary camera, Exynos 9610 SoC: Report

Ahead of even being officially confirmed, specifications of the Motorola One Vision smartphone have surfaced online. According to the leaked specifications of the smartphone, Motorola One Vision will come with a 48-megapixel primary sensor and sport a display that will have an aspect ratio of 21:9. The latest reveal is in-line with the previously spotted Geekbench listing, according to which the smartphone will come with a Samsung Exynos 9610 SoC. According to various speculations, the Motorola smartphone is expected to be called as Motorola P40 in China, where it will be powered by the Snapdragon 675 SoC. Reports also suggest that the smartphone is in development under the codename ‘Robusta2’.

Motorola One Vision specifications (expected)

According to XDA Developers, Motorola One Vision will come with a display that has an aspect ratio of 21:9 coupled with a full-HD+ (1080×2520 pixels) resolution. However, the leak does not talk about the actual display size of the upcoming smartphone.
Although the aspect ratio hints towards the Motorola One Vision smartphone sporting a tall display panel, it will somewhat be similar to Sony Xperia 1 and Xperia 10 models’ that we saw last month. However, we should also add here that previously leaked renders of Motorola P40 suggest that the smartphone will come with a 6.2-inch display. The report also suggests that Motorola One Vision will be powered by Exynos 9610 SoC clubbed with 3GB or 4GB RAM. The device is expected to be available in 32GB, 64GB, and 128GB inbuilt storage options. And we should add here that this is not in line with what was reported about Motorola P40 smartphone, as it was expected to come with Snapdragon 675 SoC. However, the presence of the Exynos 9610 SoC came to light with a recent Geekbench listing. On the camera front, the Motorola smartphone is expected to come with a 48MP primary sensor and the handset will come with features like Video 3D HDR and Long Exposure. It has been suggested to run the Android Pie out of the box and is expected to be a part of Google’s Android One program. It is also said to receive Android Q and Android R updates after it is launched. The upcoming handset is said to house a 3,500mAh battery. While in China, it may be launched as Motorola P40, in Latin America, India, and Brazil it is expected to come with Motorola One branding.

Opera browser for Android gets inbuilt-VPN with latest update

0
Opera has just rolled out the latest build of its mobile browser for Android – Opera 51. The newly launched version comes with a very useful new feature that a number of users are going to love – an inbuilt VPN. Opera browser’s latest updated version for its Android users comes with a native VPN service and users would not have to pay anything to make use of it. Furthermore, it will not come with any attached log management condition. In addition to this, Opera has not even levied any limitation on the usage of its VPN service in terms of duration or data consumption. If you are interested in using it, you would be happy to know that the new build of Opera browser is now available to download for Android across the globe. In case you wish to download the update, you should know that it is a part of version 51 of Opera browser. We should add here that Opera started testing the free inbuilt VPN in its mobile browser in February this year. After testing it for about a month, the company has finally rolled out the app’s stable version as Opera browser version 51. As of now, the updated build is only available to download from Google Play Store in certain regions only. However, if you can’t wait to try out the feature, you can head to APKMirror to download the latest build.
Speaking of the company’s native VPN, it enables users to choose between servers from Europe, America and Asia. The VPN service comes with an option called ‘Optimal’ that selects the best network route depending on the location of users automatically. It is worth noticing that enabling the VPN will automatically deactivate the Opera browser‘s inbuilt data saving feature. Opera browser’s updated build also comes with the option to deactivate the VPN conditionally, in which case it only allows search engines to show the most relevant search results depending on the location the user is surfing from. In addition to this, one can also have the VPN automatically activated each time the private tab is accessed. We should add here that Opera’s inbuilt VPN is a log-free service, which basically means that when users are connected to a public network, the information that is relayed via the virtual IP and network servers is not collected. We should add here that having an in-built VPN is likely to get Opera some additional users who value private browsing.

Google to close down Inbox by Gmail on April 2

0
Google+ has been in news since it suffered a data breach last year. Soon after that, it was announced that the social networking platform would close down. However, that is not the only service that Google will be killing this year, as Inbox by Gmail is also going to shut down on April 2. The technology giant had announced its plans to shutting down the mobile email app last year. However, till now, there was no specific date given by the company. Users of Inbox by Gmail have already been notified that the app will be ‘going away’ on April 2 forever. We should mention Google+, the technology giant’s failed attempt to counter Facebook, will also be closing down on the same day. Along with the in-app notification, Google has also added a shortcut on Inbox that takes users to Gmail’s app. We should mention that this is not a very surprising move that Google has taken.
The reason for this is that Google has been adding a number of Inbox features to Gmail for months now. So, if someone saw it closely, it could only point towards the possibility of Inbox being closed down. But not all of Inbox features made their way to Gmail, so users will surely miss the ones that they found to be useful. But then, we should also point out that Inbox by Gmail never really garnered as much popularity as Gmail, which nearly everyone uses for sending and receiving emails. Furthermore, Google has also said that the core services of Inbox will also stop working by April 2. So, in case you are planning to stick with the last version of the app for as long as you can, we should tell you that it is actually not a feasible option. inbox for gmail To recall, Inbox by Gmail was launched by Google in 2014 and with the app, the technology giant intended to increase productivity, particularly for people who receive a lot of emails regularly. Users could automatically generate replies, create bundles, and do so much more with Inbox. We should also add here that since only two weeks are left before the app becomes history, Google has made it extremely hard for users to find Inbox by Gmail on Play Store, in case someone wants to give it a try before it is killed. So if you are one among such people, brace yourself to have a hard time looking on the Play Store. The Inbox for Gmail features that have made their way to the regular Gmail app are Smart Reply, Nudges, inline attachments, among others. As we mentioned earlier, the regular Gmail app has not got all the features of Inbox by Gmail.

Call of Duty: Mobile game might be launching in the coming months, check out the teaser video

After PUBG Mobile and Fortnite’s Mobile game, another player will enter the battle royale arena. Call of Duty has decided to launch a battle royale for Mobile platform. Call of Duty: Blackout was COD’s take on battle royale where it used the same rules of the genre, but bent it to suit its style. Unlike many other battle royale genre games, COD Blackout uses the first-person-shooter style and includes many characters and weapons to choose from. What makes it different than the other games of the same type is its graphics and Call of Duty playstyle. Seeing the popularity of Mobile battle royale games the company behind COD is bringing the game to smartphones. The mobile version of the game is called Call of Duty: Mobile. Not much rocket science there (when deciding the name of the new game). The Call of Duty: Mobile will be very similar to its computer counterparts as it will include many traditional COD maps and game modes. Some of the maps include Nuketown, Crash, Hijacked and they can be played in different modes such as Free for All, Team Deathmatch, Frontline, Search and Destroy modes etc. Just like PUBG the Call of Duty: Mobile will also be free to download and play. However, unlike the PC and the console games, which is made by Activison, the Call of Duty: Mobile too is being developed by Tencent Games subsidiary Timi Studio.
Currently the game is still in development, but it is listed on Google Play Store as ‘coming soon’. The interested players can pre-register on the Google Play Store or callofduty.com/mobile to know about the game’s launch date and they might also get an invite for early access of the game. When the game launches, it will be going up against the PUBG Mobile and Fortnite, both of which see a huge number of players. But there are other shooter mobile games that have a huge fan base like Shadowgun, N.O.V.A, Critical Ops etc. The Call of Duty series too has been making games for more than 10 years so it is safe to say that they already have a good fanbase. And seeing the popularity of Mobile gaming amongst youngsters in India like PUBG, Call of Duty: Mobile too might be a big hit. Call of Duty: Mobile is not the first game the company has released on the Mobile platform, as they had released Call of Duty: Zombies for iOS in 2009. And in 2011 they released its successor named Call of Duty: Black Ops – Zombies for both iOS and Android. Have you ever heard of them? Tell us in the comments below or our social channels. Facebook ads on housing, job and credit can no longer be targeted

Social media giant Facebook has said in a statement today that it will end some targeting options for advertisements that have the potential of being discriminatory. This move came as a part of a legal settlement with civil rights groups that the company has made. With this, anyone who is placing an advertisement on housing, job or credit will be able to target users on the basis of their age, gender and zip code. We should add here that this is not the first time when this is happening as Facebook previously had to drop targeting by ‘multicultural affinity’, which could be used to exclude users on the social media platform on the basis of their race. The company practices regarding their advertisements came under scrutiny after a series of articles that were published by ProPublica showed how targeting options on Facebook could be used for discrimination. Soon after this, the social networking giant faced legal action from civil rights groups including American Civil Liberties Union.
And today, the company finally announced changes that it had to make as a part of the settlement with civil rights groups. It was argued by the groups that targeting on the platform violated laws that have barred discriminatory advertising. The social media giant has also added that it will be building a tool that can be used to view targeted housing ads, in a move that is similar to a database that was made by the company after it faced a controversy over political advertisements. The ACLU also said that the company has agreed to regularly meet with plaintiffs to discuss the progress of its reforms. Also, advertisers will be needed to certify their compliance with anti-discrimination laws. Speaking about the changes, Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg said, “Housing, employment and credit ads are crucial to helping people buy new homes, start great careers, and gain access to credit. They should never be used to exclude or harm people. Getting this right is deeply important to me and all of us at Facebook because inclusivity is a core value for our company.” The blog post also said that as a part of the changes:
  • Anyone who wants to run housing, employment or credit ads will no longer be allowed to target by age, gender or zip code.
  • Advertisers offering housing, employment and credit opportunities will have a much smaller set of targeting categories to use in their campaigns overall. Multicultural affinity targeting will continue to be unavailable for these ads. Additionally, any detailed targeting option describing or appearing to relate to protected classes will also be unavailable.
  • We’re building a tool so you can search for and view all current housing ads in the US targeted to different places across the country, regardless of whether the ads are shown to you.

Google Stadia game streaming platform unveiled

Technology giant Google has announced its game streaming platform Stadia at GDC 2019. Google Stadia will work on a number of devices including smartphones, laptops, tablets, TVs, and PCs, provided they have Chrome running on them. The platform integrates YouTube and lets developers add a Play button to the game video on the platform. Users can click on it to begin playing the game on Chrome. Google Stadia will be making use of the company’s data centres that are currently present in over 200 countries and territories. Google’s Phil Harrison showed off Assassin’s Creed Odyssey working across a Pixel 3 smartphone, a Chromebook and a TV via Chromecast. In addition to this, you can use your own controllers or keyboard and mouse to play games on Stadia via your PC or laptop. Or, if you want to, you can opt for the Stadia controller that has been unveiled by Google at the same event. The controller is said to link to Google’s data centres directly via Wi-Fi. The controller comes with two new buttons — on of which is a Capture button that enables players to share via YouTube to their friends, themselves or the world. Besides this, it comes with Google Assistant button that players can use during the game.

Key features

Google Stadia‘s architecture has been built on the technology giant’s data centre technology, which is also said to power the company’s search results. It has gaming-focussed hardware that helps it keep up with heavy games. The data centres are powered by the Stadia GPU from AMD at 10.7 teraflops. We should mention that this is double than Xbox One X and PS4 Pro’s and Google claims that it makes it possible to play games like Doom Eternal at 4K 60fps in HDR. Google has also added that it has been testing Stadia’s tech internally for years now and it only plans to enable 4K 60fps gameplay with HDR in surround sound when it will be available for all. The company also added that Stadia will eventually be able to go up to 8K too. Furthermore, players would have an option to share their Stadia gameplay footage with HDR to YouTube and this too, can be done at 4K 60fps. Google has also confirmed that multi-player games like battle royale and couch-based co-op experiences will also be supported on Stadia. That’s not all. The game-streaming service by Google will also have support for cross-platform play. As of now, there is no word on the availability of the service, apart from the fact that it was announced that it will be available in the US, UK, Canada and Europe later this year. However, we must add that there are a number of questions that Google did not answer about the new gaming service like its pricing, the games that would be available and how exactly would multiplayer setting work.

Apple iMacs get ‘a 2x performance boost’ with this update

Cupertino-based technology giant Apple has updated the 21.5-inch and 27-inch models of its iMac desktops with new processors and graphics cards. The update is promised to get a ‘2x performance boost’ to the devices. The 21.5-inch model of iMac is now available with an 8th Gen quad-core i3 or six-core i5 processor coupled with a Radeon Pro 555X GPU or a Radeon Pro 560X. However, if you are one among the customers who want more power from their device, you can get a custom model that comes with up to six-core i7 processor, houses 32GB of RAM, and has AMD’s Radeon Pro Vega 20 GPU onboard. The specifications are similar to what Apple is offering on its refreshed Mac Mini. But the difference is that the iMac comes with an in-built 4K display. Coming to the 27-inch model of the iMac, it comes with Intel’s six core i5 processor. While the two lower configurations come with an 8th Gen processor, the highest one comes with a 9th generation one and costs $2,299. We should add here that Apple us also offering upgrades to its Intel’s latest 9th Gen, eight-core i9 processors. coming to graphics on the 27-inch iMac model, the prebuilt ones will come with Radeon Pro 570X, 575X, and 580X GPUs and a custom option with AMD’s Radeon Pro Vega 48 GPU, that comes with 8GB of memory, can be bought for a higher configuration.
All the 27-inch models of the iMac come with 8GB of RAM and Apple’s fusion drive by default. You can get up to 64GB of memory and faster storage of up to 3TB fusion drive or 1TB of SSD if you are willing to pay more. We should mention that prior to this, Apple updated its iMac model last two years back at WWDC 2017, where Intel’s 7th Gen chips were also rolled out. Another thing worth adding here is that Intel has already released its full lineup of 9th generation chips and Apple is sticking to its 8th generation processors for the prebuilt options. While the latest chips are available in iMacs, but primarily in the custom options. The only preconfigured option to come with the latest chipset is also the priciest one in the 27-inch lineup. We have to admit that this is slightly disappointing as even though Apple products are extremely costly, the company is still not offering the latest processors. It is with noticing that today’s updates are only meant for standard iMac models and the high-end iMac Pro is not getting an upgrade today. Coming to the pricing, while the price of 21.5-inch iMac starts at $1,299, the 27-inch model cost starts at $1,799.

Google Stadia cloud gaming service: 7 unanswered questions

Technology giant Google finally took wraps off its gaming service Stadia at GDC 2019.  The cloud-based gaming service will work on tablets, smartphones, TVs, laptops, PCs. Users will only require Chrome on these devices in order to have access to Google Stadia. The platform has integration with YouTube and enables developers to add a Play button to the game video on the video platform. So, people who come to watch gaming videos can also play them. The service also comes with a Stadia controller and it links to data centres directly via Wi-Fi. Furthermore, Google Assistant helps players out during the game. However, there are certain questions that Google did not answer at its event. Here’s a look at everything that we don’t know about Google Stadia:

What games would be available?

stadia 8   Although we did get to see some games at yesterday’s keynote including Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey and Doom: Eternal, Google’s presentation did not give away much on what games we will get to see on Stadia. However, what we do know is that Google’s Stadia gaming service requires games to be ported to it. We expect more details about it to come up in future. As of now, Google also announced that Jade Raymond will be responsible for taking care of first-party games that are meant just for Stadia as well as developer relations. According to Raymond, “working with external developers to bring all of the bleeding edge Google technology you have seen today available to partner studios big and small.”

What will be the cost?

stadia 9 Another question that Google was reluctant to answer at its keynote was the business model that it intends to adopt for its service. The technology giant has not yet clarified if the service will be a paid one, or it will run advertisements, or is it just free for a particular time of the day. As of now, we have no idea about what to expect in terms of the price of Google Stadia could gaming service.

Will it be available on iOS?

stadia Everyone knows about the rivalry between Google and Apple. However, a lot of Google services like Chrome and Gmail, are available on iOS. But when it comes to Google Stadia, the technology giant has not said anything about its availability on iOS devices. We should add here that if Google Stadia will work like a Store, it would not be available on iOS, as it is against Apple regulations to have a have store within its App Store. This again, is just a speculation, as Google did not clarify it.

What if you already own some games?

stadia 6 The key highlight of the newly launched service by Google is that you can buy the game once and then play it anywhere. So you easily play the game on your laptop, and then continue playing it on your television. However, one thing that Google did not speak about was whether this will only be applicable for playing games that you already own. And needless to say, this is a question that will matter to a lot of gamers across the globe.

How does it plan to get viewers to play games?

stadia 10 Most people watch gaming content on YouTube and Switch when they are travelling or at a place when they can’t really play a game. And Google’s model is that it will let users play the game after watching its trailer. But the question is, how does it plan to convert viewers into players? Furthermore, let’s not forget that people don’t exactly spend too much time watching trailers. They instead watch famous streamers play games like PUBG and Fortnite. How does Google plan to convert this particular audience?

What will the image quality be like?

stadia 4 Games are increasingly becoming more and more graphic heavy. And people would obviously want to use Google’s Stadia for these graphic-hungry games. But Google has not mentioned whether its service would be up for handling these. Although a 1080p stream looks good, we must also not forget that high-efficiency HD video compression does take away a few details.

How does the multiplayer work?

stadia 2 Multiplayer gaming is a huge sphere. And no company serious about gaming would ignore it. So, we fully expect Google Stadia to have support for it too. But the company has not answered a number of questions about it. We still don’t know if we can use our existing account for it or will have to make a new one. Will it be among the paid things on the platform? Will there be some IP issues that players should take into consideration?

Google is bringing ‘Express backup’ and ‘Data Cap’ feature to Google Photos

Technology giant Google is bringing its Express backup option in its Google Photos for all the Android users in India. The Express backup option was first started by Google for the Android users in a few countries last December. But on Tuesday, Google stated that it has started to roll out the new feature to more Android users in other countries as well. And the Express backup option of Google Photos will reach for Indian Android users with an update of the Google Photos by the end of this week. The new backup option can be seen in the Backup settings in the Google Photos app. Speaking about the new feature, Raja Ayyagari, Product Manager of Google Photos wrote in a blog post, “Express provides faster backup at a reduced resolution, making it easier to ensure memories are saved even when you might have poor or infrequent Wi-Fi connectivity.” Google has stated that the new Express backup option is aimed users who don’t have the availability of good and strong data connections and they are looking to store their clicked photos on Google’s cloud for safe-keeping. According to Google, the Express backup stores the photos at a reduced resolution while maintaining their image quality. Unlike the regular backup uploads which stores the pictures as they are (in high quality), it does not require good data-connection and speed. While the reduced resolution image is low on size and it allows a quicker upload even without the need of a high-speed data connection.
Google stated that the photos saved using the Express backup feature are reduced to 3-megapixel resolution from their original size. And the videos will be stored at a reduced resolution of 480p from their original resolution. The California technology company also stated that the reduced video might lose some information if stored using the Express backup. However, the original Google Photos backup which stored high quality images and videos is also available, so the users can choose between the two options. Besides the Express backup feature for Google Photos, the search giant company also introduced a new Data Cap option for the backup. The Data Cap backup will give the users control over how much data Google Photos can use everyday for backups. It means that the user can decide and limit the data used for backup, the Data Cap can be set as low as 5MB. Although the new feature is launching in India, Google stated that it will launch the feature in ‘dozens’ more countries. But the rollout of the feature is still slow.

Qualcomm’s standalone wireless VR headset could connect to PCs: Report

Qualcomm is best known for its processors, but that doesn’t mean that it is the only sphere the company has delved in. The company keeps on dabbling with other technologies and often manages to make a mark. The latest report that has surfaced online talks about Qualcomm‘s new VR headset, which will work as a standalone headset for smartphones and users will also be able to connect it with PCs wirelessly. According to a report in CNET, the headset will be unveiled at the ongoing Game Developers Conference in San Francisco and will could hit the shelves in Asia as early as this year itself. While most mobile VR headsets cannot be plugged in to their PC in order to play additional VR games, the American chipmaker has a vision to make it possible in its new reference design that is dubbed as “Boundless XR.” We should add that the new reference design that has been laid out by the company suggests that the device will be able to work as a standalone headset that will have six degrees of freedom and will also be able to link to PCS through a 60GHz connection. The headset by Qualcomm will be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipsets. The latency of the Qualcomm’s headset is key at a low 16ms, according to the company. The headset is designed by the company to process VR technology while being connected to a PC. So, at least theoretically, it could help in freeing up some processing power in the users’ computer. But then, it has not been specified how much of processing power will be cleared. Qualcomm also told the technology website that in order to be connected to the headset, PCs and consoles will have to support 802.11ad Wi-Fi and run the company’s software. The games would also be able to support the new headset without any changes, according to Qualcomm. While Qualcomm has made a number of VR reference designs, very few companies have taken up on these including HTC, Facebook, and Lenovo. Most OEMs just stick to manufacturing smartphones, tablets and other such devices. Qualcomm has also revealed that its first headset with the new design will be Pico Neo2 VR headset that will be launched by Chinese electronics firms Pico VR. The company has also said that HTC Vive is another partner that will work to “support the new specification through hardware and content.” However, we should point out that when we speak about reference designs, it is always a possibility that they ultimately don’t hit the shelves.

Flipkart’s Bengaluru facility orders to be processed by robots

Indian e-commerce giant Flipkart has deployed Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) in its Bengaluru-based Soukya sortation center. The company says that this has been done to improve the efficiency at the back end of its supply chain network keeping in mind the growing pressure on Indian e-commerce firms. Flipkart has added that this is particularly true in case of sales days. The setup of Automated Guided Vehicles included over 100 self-guided bots which, according to the company, can sort and assign packages automatically to the pin codes of the customer. This is done by identifying the encoded information on each package. The company has also claimed that up to 4,500 shipments can be processed within an hour and with some adjustments, the number can be taken up by five times. The bots offer a battery backup of up to 7-8 hours and have the capability of moving on their own. They can also carry small packages from one location to the other.
According to Flipkart, the Automated Guided Vehicles will enhance the output of the existing facility without having to invest in space or decrease the number of people working there. The internal tests that have been conducted by the company showed that with 100 AGVs, the improvement in the processor efficiency is up to 60%. This enables them to use the manpower in other areas of the supply chain network, which can also make better use of it. We should mention that Soukya facility employs around 1000 workers and it is able to process lakhs of shipments on a daily basis. The new setup of bots will be operated by the staff that is currently employed there. Internal training will be provided to staff members that will enable them to handle the Automated Guided Vehicles. We should also mention that Flipkart also has plans to build a Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Robotics & Automation that is meant for encouraging R&D and the company will partner with startups and universities in order to start it. Speaking about the development, Krishna Raghavan, Senior Vice President of eKart Tech at Flipkart, said, “With the Automated Guided Vehicles, we are re-imagining new growth paths, while orchestrating new and innovative ways of working. We believe this will help bring efficiencies, agility and scale to the supply chain operations, helping us serve the customer better.” The e-commerce space in India has seen a massive growth and according to a report by Deloitte India and Retail Association of India, it is expected to cross $84 billion by 2021, which will be up from $24 billion in 2017.
