Top 5 photo-storage services that you should know about

Smartphones are evolving, and with them, the camera size and the picture quality is also going up. Clicking pictures with smartphones has become a second nature of almost all smartphone users. But the photos take up space and if not managed correctly, they could eat up all the internal storage of the device. Almost all the smartphones come with limited storage option, but then, there is an option to invest in a microSD card. However, since some of the smartphones don’t support microSD card, the options for additional storage become very limited. There are many photo storing platforms available on the internet which offer varying options and features. Here we are listing down some of the best photo-storage services that you can find:

Google Photos

Google is bringing ‘Express backup’ and ‘Data Cap’ feature to Google Photos

Google Photos a very useful service by the technology giant and it is basically an online gallery of the smartphone pictures. The users can use their own Google ID to store their photos on Google Photos. Once it is uploaded to Google Photos, user can access their images from any part of the world. Even if the photos of the user’s smartphone are deleted, the photos on Google Photos will remain. The Google Photos also comes with an automatic backup option which lets the user take the backup of every photo he takes.

It too comes with plans and options – if the ‘High Quality’ option is chosen, Google will let the user store unlimited photos for free but the kick is, the photos should remain under 16MP in size. While the videos will be kept in 1080p resolution.

And if the ‘Original Quality’ option is chosen, Google Photos will let the user store the pictures to a certain point. Currently, Google gives the user 15GB of free storage which includes all its services. But once it exceeds, the user will have to pay for additional storage or delete some of his old photos or files to make the space.

Flickr

Flickr

Flickr is one of the oldest platforms to save and share photographs. But it should be noted that Flickr lets the user save only 1,000 photos, and if a user has exceeded this number then his/her older photos will be deleted. To store more photos on this platform, the user would have to pay for the storage service. The user will be charged $50.24 (approximately Rs 3501.85) per year for unlimited storage of photos without ads.

Photobucket

PhotoBucket

Photobucket is a platform where you can store as well as share photos. It offers free as well as paid photo storing and photo hosting. The platform helps the users to insert their photos to another website using direct image links. But the free plan limits some of the functions. Using the free plan, the users can upload as much as 2.5GB of images but it will come with lots of ads.

For paid services, Photobucket has Beginner plan at $4.48 which increases the upload limit to 25GB. There is an Intermediate plan at $6.48 (approximately Rs 451) per month which increases the upload limit to 250GB and the Expert plan which offers 1TB of photo upload limit. But it costs $11.48 (approximately Rs 800.18) per month.

500px

500px

500px is a Canadian company which is targeted more towards professional photographers. The platform offers the professional photographers a place to store, share, exhibit and license their pictures. But to store or exhibit pictures, 500px charges some amount. It also has a free or Basic plan which basically doesn’t cost anything but it offers limited options to the users who don’t really do anything useful. It allows the user 7 photo uploads in a period of 7 days. Other than that, the platform offers two paid services – Awesome and Pro, but there is also Adobe Creative Cloud Photography which can be added to the Pro plan for a yearly charge.

Amazon Photos

Amazon Photos

Lastly, Amazon.com as well has its own photo storing platform named Amazon Photos. The Amazon Prime members get additional benefits and other options along with free shipping. Amazon charges $119 (approximately Rs 8294) per year for its unlimited photo storage. The users can upload photos up to 48.82GB in size but it should be noted that for files more than 2GB in size the user will need Amazon Photos desktop application.

Instagram influencers’ data leaked online, traced to India: Report

It is no secret that Facebook is not exactly a secure platform. Now, it seems like this not-so-great aspect of the social media platform has also started rubbing off on the company’s photo-sharing app Instagram. A report has surfaced online that says that personal data of millions of influencers and celebrities has been exposed on Instagram in a massive database breach.

According to the report in TechCrunch, the breach is being traced back to Mumbai-based social media marketing firm Chtrbox. The database that contained 49 million records of a number of high-profile influencers has been found to be leaked online. We should mention that these influencers include food bloggers, celebrities, and other people with a high number of followers on the photo-sharing app.

The report has added that “Each record contained public data, including bio, profile picture, number of followers they have, location and private contact information.”

In addition to this, it also said, “Shortly after we reached out, Chtrbox pulled the database offline.”

TechCrunch was alerted by security researcher Anurag Sen, who was the first one to discover that the database has been leaked online.

The report said, “We traced the database back to Mumbai-based social media marketing firm Chtrbox, which pays influencers to post sponsored content on their accounts.”

We should mention that this is not the first time when an Instagram security breach has been reported. In April this year, Facebook had said that it stored millions of passwords of Instagram users as plain text, and this, in turn, left these passwords exposed to people who had access to a certain internal system.

It is also worth adding that the lapse in security initially came to light in March this year. However, at that time, Facebook said that it only happened to “tens of thousands of Instagram users”. However, in April, the company gave a revised number of “millions”.

Facebook said that the security issue was not only limited to Instagram but also affected hundreds of millions of Facebook Lite users. “Tens of millions” of other users of its native platform were also impacted.

For those unaware, technology companies are supposed to store passwords in an encrypted format. This enables websites to confirm that the user is entering the correct password without actually reading it. Facebook has been embroiled in one data breach after the other since 2018. The most massive one among these was the Cambridge Analytica breach, which was one among the first major breaches on the company’s part that came to light.

Google Pixel 4 series will come without any physical keys: Reports

0

Google has already launched its much-awaited mid-range segment smartphones – the Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL – and with it, the technology giant entered the mid-range smartphone segment. The smartphone’s cameras capabilities were highly appreciated as Google brought the Pixel 3’s A Grade camera performance to the mid-range smartphone segment. But now, the company is once again focusing on its next flagship device – the Pixel 4-series.

Google is expected to come up with a much better camera performance in its Pixel 4-series devices and set a camera standard for smartphones to beat. Although not much is known about the Pixel 4-series devices, it is expected to be launched somewhere around October this year.

According to a leak, the Pixel 4 holds a codename of ‘Coral’ while the Pixel 4 XL is codenamed ‘Flame’. Other than the regular and the XL variants of the Pixel 4, another smartphone ‘s codename was revealed as ‘Needlefish’. But the device’s details or name is currently not known but it is estimated that Google might be developing another device to be launched along with these smartphones. The leaker named Phone Designer has revealed some renders and designs of what the Pixel 4 devices may look like.

Earlier we saw certain leaks and rumours that the upcoming Pixel 4-series will sport a punch-hole front camera similar to the Samsung Galaxy S10-series. But unlike the Pixel 3-series which came with a single camera, the Pixel 4-series devices might come with dual-rear camera setup on the Pixel 4 XL. The upcoming devices may also come with the in-display fingerprint scanner instead of the regular back-mounted fingerprint scanner.

A recent leak reveals that the upcoming Pixel 4-series devices won’t have any physical buttons. The leak was reported by Slashleaks and it indicates that the Pixel 4-series will come with no power button or volume rocker keys. Instead of the physical buttons, the Pixel 4-series will most probably use the capacitive keys. Slashleaks had also said that Google earlier had patented a display design for the punch-hole display with dual front camera setup along with dual front-firing speakers. So we might get to see this setup in the new Pixel 4 XL.

Other than this, the Pixel 4-series might be powered by the Snapdragon 855 SoC and will come with multiple RAM and storage variants. But since these abovementioned specifications are base on leaks, they should be taken with a pinch of salt.

Game of Thrones finale is the most watched HBO show of all time: Report

0

HBO’s Game of Thrones has come to an end. Needless to say, fans across the globe tuned in to watch how it all ends. The first numbers for HBO’s Game of Thrones’ finale, which brings a close to the fantasy TV show has broken the record to become the most watched episode of the entire series. A report has also emerged that also says that the finale of the show is also the most watched episode of any HBO show ever.

According to a report in The Wall Street Journal, 13.6 million viewers watched the Game of Thrones finale episode live on the HBO channel. If we add in early number from streaming and on-demand rewatches, it goes up from 13.6 million to 19.3 million viewers. This is a record for Game of Thrones, as well as for HBO.

We should mention that this is really not surprising. Game of Thrones’ season finale episodes have broken its overall viewership record each year ever since Season 5 was aired. However, the Season 8 finale has become the most watched episode on HBO itself, and this is something new for Game of Thrones.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Game of Thrones’ final season has been the most watched the show’s history. Among the six most-watched episodes of the show, five have been aired this season. It is worth mentioning that the Season 7 finale is the still the third most-watched episode ever. HBO has further added that additional views will be added in the next week and each episode will get around 44.2 million viewers.

However, we should also point out that Game of Thrones has received a lot of criticism this year. After episode 5 (The Bells) was aired, some fans even started an online petition to remake the entire season, If you think that this petition is a joke, we should tell you that it has been signed by more than a million people now.

The petition is present on Change.org and it clearly states that the creators of Game of Thrones – David Benioff and D.B Weiss – should not be involved in the remake. The petition says that the duo is “woefully incompetent writers when they have no source material (i.e. the books) to fall back on”.

Other than this, a highly-upvoted thread on Reddit has been created only to put the creators of Game of Thrones on Google Search each time someone looks for ‘Bad Writers’.

Although we don’t think HBO will consider remaking the most expensive show in the history of television, the petition is certainly a way for fans to vent their frustration.

Huawei receives a 90-days ban implmentation from the US government

Yesterday, Huawei was put on a trade blacklist by the US government which eventually led to Google, Intel and other big technology companies to block their business with the Chinese company. The company was put on blacklist becasuse of the national security concerns alleged by President Doanld Trump led US government. Following this, Google banned all its popular Google Play Store apps from available on the future Huawei smartphones along with the future Android updates. This has put Huawei at a very tight rope as the company’s smartphone business could be on the line. But now, the US officials have issued a 90-days extension on its ban on Huawei. According to the officials, breathng space was needed ro avoid huge disruption.

According to a Commerce Dept. filing, although the time limit has been extended for a few months but it does not change the fact that the ban will be imposed on Huawei by the US President Donald Trump. As the company was charged with national security and spying issues on the US grounds. And according to the officials, these charges have major implications for the US and the Chinese technology companies.

But now, the US government is granting a temporary license that will allow Huawei to continue doing business with the American technology firms. However, that also comes with validity.

Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross said, “The Temporary General License grants operators time to make other arrangements and (gives) the Department space to determine the appropriate long-term measures for Americans and foreign telecommunications providers that currently rely on Huawei equipment for critical services. In short, this license will allow operations to continue for existing Huawei mobile phone users and rural broadband networks.”

According to Reuters, the US government has been tying the rope around Huawei for quite some time now. It has become one of the largest smartphone companies in the world in terms of shipments of devices. Huawei is also among the first technology companies to bring a working 5G smartphone. Prior to this, we saw that the daughter of Huawei’s president was arrested in the US and after that, the tensions between the company and the US government began. But the main reason is that the US government believes that the Huawei is being backed up by the Chinese military and that its equipment could be used to spy and provide information to the Chinese government.

It was last week when President Trump had declared a “national emergency” which gave him the power to blacklist the companies which put a potential national threat to the security of the US. This move was followed by the US Department of Commerce putting a total ban on Huawei’s business with the US companies. This ban prevented the US companies to stop selling or buying technologies to and from the Chinese brand.

But what will a 90-days ban implementation prove and what will it lead to? Will Huawei come up with a solution or will the matter escalate further? Only time will tell.

Epson EcoTank Monochrome M1120 Wi-Fi Ink Tank Printer Review: Good inexpensive prints

At one point of time, HP used to dominate the deskjet home and office market in India. However, in the last couple of years, Epson has worked very hard and has taken a considerable portion of the pie. We have seen them evolve and with the Ink Tank printer innovations by them, we had a feeling they will start leading. Enter Epson EcoTank Monochrome M1120 Wi-Fi Ink Tank Printer. We got this neat office companion over for a review and found it to be quite exceptional. We kept throwing curve balls at it and it kept hitting it out of the park. This is our review of the Epson EcoTank Monochrome M1120 Wi-Fi Ink Tank Printer.

In This Article

Design

Out of the box, this printer is like the usual box printer you get for offices. White with subtle black panels can be found all over the Epson EcoTank Monochrome M1120 Wi-Fi Ink Tank Printer. This just spells it means business and yes it does. The printer is not heavy at all, yet does not come across as flimsy device. Since it is a single feature, monochromatic printer, the weight was bound to be less.

The front has the paper holding tray as well as the print production tray, which is great as then it will also use up less space. The top part of the printer has the button placements, which ranges from power on/off, WiFi and tank refill button. These are feather touch physical keys. The rear has the USB as well as power ports.

Epson M1120 Printer buttons

The front also has real-time analogue ink level indicator. Yes, you do not need to rely on a digital meter on the printer software, but can see the ink levels in real time through a viewing window. Talking about which, the Ink bottle comes in the box. But filling the tank is a long task. The manual does come in handy showing you how to refill, however, you still have to wait for the bottle to empty into the tank (for a long time). Then there is some more wait time for the ink to charge for the first time.

Overall, the form factor of the Epson EcoTank Monochrome M1120 Wi-Fi Ink Tank Printer is like any other office printer, except lighter and slightly compacter. Ink refill time could have been lowered.

Performance

This printer is a fighter jet in the performance sector. Once set up, which does take some amount of rocket science since one has to connect it to the WiFi too, the prints come out at a very fast pace. So, let’s get the cat out of the bag. During the Epson M1120 Printer review, we could extract 25 pages per minute (PPM) of black and white prints under low settings. But here the colours are more towards light grey than black.

However, we were amazed to see it squirt out 22.5 great looking pages in 1 minute under the standard mode. And the black colour here is very comparable to a good laser printer. The prints got even better when we turned the high-quality prints settings on. However, that brought the PPM level down to just 2.5. Which was a bit shocking for us. Nevertheless, one can use it is in standard mode and get good prints around the office. Black and white images, on the other hand, lost a bit of detail and seemed a little blurry in the low mode. But were quite decent in standard and crisper in the high-end mode.

Epson claims that users get a print at only 12 paise per page. That is not bad at all. Over that, one can easily refill the ink tank on their own, no need to take the cartridge to a refilling centre. Just bring or order an ink bottle and you can do it yourself. Prints over WiFi or USB more or less take the same amount of time. If the printer is kept near the router and you give a print from your desk. By the time you walk to it, the prints under standard mode are more likely to be out.

To talk about some more specs, the printer supports A4 size sheets of up to 15ipm. The paper tray can hold up to 150 sheets and the maximum print resolution supported is 1,440 x 720. Which is okay for an office printout, however not the best if you want to give a presentation from these prints. Also, this printer does not support edge to edge prints.

Verdict

This printer consumes only 13W of power when in use and 2.4W when in standby. It supports Windows 7 and later, as well as Mac OS. Also, there is support for Epson connect, which means you can give prints straight from your mobile devices using WiFi direct.

If you have small to medium size office then this printer will suit you well. This is a good printer to own for day to day usage and is economical too (over a period of time). The initial asking price for the Epson EcoTank Monochrome M1120 Wi-Fi Ink Tank Printer is Rs 12,000 at places like Nehru place. That is a bit extravagant if you ask us.

Pros:

Good to look at

Economical prints

Fast PPM under standard mode

Cons:

High-quality prints are very slow

Initial asking price is high

Print resolution could have been better

Intel, Qualcomm and Broadcomm cut deals off with Huawei under the US ban

Seems like Huawei is having really hard days. The week started with the US government banning American suppliers from doing business with the Chinese smartphone brand. Following the US government’s Huawei ban, technology giant Google abruptly cancelling off the brand’s Android license and halting its access to its services. Now, a report has emerged on Bloomberg that says that Intel, Qualcomm and Bradcomm are cutting off their dealings with Huawei too and this will be effective immediately. We should mention that these three are the world’s leading chip suppliers.

Speaking more about Google’s cancelled deal, the company has cut off Huawei’s access to its Google Play Services and Play Store. It has dumped it out of the Android smartphone market and this means that Huawei will only be able to access the open-source version of Android operating system.

According to Bloomberg, employees across the major US chipmakers have been told to freeze the supply deals with Huawei until further notice of continuing it. We should point out that Huawei takes processors from Intel for its laptops, and it also collects some modems and processors from Qualcomm. Since Huawei builds its own mobile processors, the cancellation of the deal with Qualcomm does not affect it too much.

Another report from Bloomberg states that Huawei was already prepared for this and has stockpiled chips from US suppliers, that is enough to last it at least three months. This time period will be long enough to tell if the US government’s Huawei ban is just a scare tactic or a permanent decision.

According to Nikkei, Europe may soon start doing the same as it quoted a source saying, “Infineon decided to adopt a more cautious measure and stopped the shipment. But it will hold meetings this week to discuss [the situation] and make assessments.”

Infineon also issued a statement saying, “the great majority of products Infineon delivers to Huawei is not subject to U.S. export control law restrictions, therefore those shipments will continue.”

Nikkei has also said that European chipmaker ST Microelectronics have discussed its shipments to Huawei all week.

We should also mention that Huawei has been developing in-house alternatives to Android and Windows, specifically to address a situation that has arisen with the United States’ ban. As of now, there is no word from Microsoft it will continue to provide Windows for Huawei laptops. But then, we don’t see it going against the US government.

Xiaomi’s official blog goes offline: Gives privacy and security errors hours after Google cancels business with Huawei

0

It looks like the Chinese smartphone makers are gathering are dominating the headlines today. Earlier we saw that Google has suspended and blocked its business with the Chinese electronics maker Huawei so that it won’t be able to use any of Google’s popular products like Gmail and YouTube. Then we saw the launch of the Redmi 7S in India and hours after the launch of the new device, the official blog of Xiaomi (www.blog.mi.com) is giving security and privacy issues and the website cannot be accessed.

If one tries to open the website, an error message is displayed on the platform saying that “Your connection is not private. Attackers might be trying to steal your information from blog.mi.com (for example, passwords, messages, or credit cards).” The error code being displayed on the blog website is “NET::ERR_CERT_COMMON_NAME_INVALID”.

At the time of writing Xiaomi’s website had been down for at least half an hour and the same error code displayed on it with the same message. Xiaomi hasn’t as yet commented on this, but we are curious to know the reason of this.

Earlier we saw that all the relationship and business with the Chinese smartphone maker Huawei has been cancelled not only by Google but also by Intel and Qualcomm as well. After the cancellation of the business with the Chinese electronics maker, all the Huawei smartphones won’t be receiving any more Android updates now. And the future Huawei devices won’t be coming with Android which are not open for commercial use. However, Huawei will be able to use Android versions available via Open Source licence. But its just a theory, the company had earlier said that it had been preparing for something like this for a long time and it has developed its own system and application similar to Google’s Android. And some Huawei devices in China are also being sold with this version of the Huawei’s system.

Although business cancellation with Huawei might not affect the other Chinese smartphone makers in the short term but the long-term consequences might be adverse for all the Chinese OEM makers. Although Mi’s blog is currently down, but the official product page of Xiaomi is running so the exact reason of the website being down is not known.

Sony or Microsoft: Who will be the real winner of the partnership?

Last week, we learnt that Sony and Microsoft will be teaming up to develop new technologies in the field of gaming and game streaming. Sony, which owns the PlayStation consoles, partnered with its long-time rival Microsoft which owns the Xbox gaming consoles. The move was a highly unexpected one by the companies. But according to Sony, it has partnered with Microsoft to host some of its PlayStation online services to Microsoft’s Azure cloud platform.

Sony too has been trying to develop its own cloud platform with limited success and now it partners with Microsoft to use the Azure cloud platform. But according to a report by Bloomberg, the employees working on the PlayStation were outraged with Sony’s partnership with Microsoft as they were unaware of this development. But the higher-ups had promised that the upcoming consoles of the future won’t be affected with this partnership.

Sony’s PlayStation generates about a third of the company’s profits and faces stiff competition from Microsoft’s Xbox. In the new age of gaming, cloud platforms play a huge role in the gaming consoles and their parent companies. Seeing this opportunity, Google and Amazon.com Inc, both of which have their own cloud platforms and servers they are developing cloud-gaming services as well. Google Stadia is an example of such a service. Sony could be in serious trouble with its PlayStation platform as it doesn’t own a solid cloud platform. That’s another reason for the partnership between the two rival gaming console makers.

The report further states that, according to industry veterans and analysts, Sony is feeling ‘threatened’ with this new trend in gaming. And with Google entering the gaming business, this threat has skyrocketed for Sony. This is said to be another reason why the Japanese company has decided to leave its network infrastructure build-up to Microsoft. And following the team up with Microsoft, Sony’s shared jumped 9.9% on Friday which is the highest in the past 18 months.

In 2020, Sony bought the US start-up Gaikai Inc. to enter cloud-based gaming and then it launched the PlayStation. But now, its services have become very limited. And in the race where each company and console is trying to outdo the other and bring a new system, Sony could have lost the war in the long run if it didn’t partner with Microsoft.

According to some industry veterans, Sony could be the winner in the short to medium term run with this partnership. But Microsoft will be taking the bigger prize home as Sony had to depend on Microsoft’s Azure for its survival. Microsoft has been constantly trying to better its own Xbox consoles and services. And with Amazon and Google entering the playing field, the gaming sector will see a huge war of the top technology companies of the world.
