The use of Apple’s iPhone and iPad may be dangerous as a number of serious security vulnerabilities have been discovered by Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In). The faults appeared to be of a high level and may have provided a gateway for wireless monitoring of the devices for cyberattacks. Now Apple has released a patch that appears to have corrected a number of serious security vulnerabilities on the company’s iPhone and iPad. Warning from CERT-in said, “Multiple vulnerabilities have been reported in Apple iOS and iPadOS which could allow a remote attacker to gain access to sensitive information, execute arbitrary code, spoofing of the interface address or denial of service conditions on the targeted system.” A number of vulnerabilities in iPhone and iPad have been reported by Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) and if exploited remotely, they could give a hacker access to sensitive information and enable them to run arbitrary code. According to the govt. these vulnerabilities exist in Apple iOS and iPadOS due to Improper security restrictions in AppleMobileFileIntegrity component; Improper bounds check in AVEVideoEncoder component; Improper validation in CFNetwork component; Improper entitlement in Core Bluetooth component; Improper memory handling in GPU Drivers component; Memory corruption issue in IOHIDFamily component; Use after free issue and Race condition issue in IOKit component: Improper memory handling and Out-of-bounds write issue in Kernel component; Use after free issue, Improper memory handling and Race condition issue in PPP component; Impropersecurity restrictions and Improper path validation in Sandbox component; Improper UI handling, Type confusion issue and Logic issue in Webkit component; Use-after-free error in Webkit PDF component; Improper input validation in Mail component. A remote attacker could exploit these vulnerabilities by persuading the victim to open a specially crafted file or application. Successful exploitation of these vulnerabilities could allow the attacker to gain access to sensitive information, execute arbitrary code, spoofing of the interface address or denial of service conditions on the targeted system. As per CERT-in Apple iOS 16.1 and iPadOS version prior to 16 which includes iPhone 8 and later, iPad Pro(all models), iPad Air 3rd generation and later, iPad 5th generation and later, iPad mini 5th generation and later. Apple iOS versions prior to 16.0,3 which include iPhone 8 and later are also affected. According to the advisory, users of these devices must immediately update their gadgets, as both Apple and CERT-In have stated in their vulnerability advisories. Online delivery fraud is becoming more and more prevalent. Another online scam involves a buyer from Mangaluru who alleges that he was delivered a stone and some e-waste instead of a gaming laptop. He ordered the laptop during the Big Diwali Sale hosted on Flipkart. The Big Diwali Sale has come to an end on the online retailer Flipkart. A buyer from Mangaluru placed a Flipkart order for a gaming laptop. Unexpectedly, he did not get the device that he ordered. He received a large stone and some e-waste instead. After this, the man turned to Twitter and spoke about his experience he had and shared numerous photos. His name is Chinmaya Ramana and he ordered the Asus TUF Gaming F15 gaming laptop on October 15. The gaming device was ordered for his friend and was shipped on October 20 which was completely sealed. So when it was opened to his surprise he found some stones and e-waste inside the package. Ramana’s tweet read, “Ordered for laptop and received a big stone and E-waste! During Diwali sale on Flipkart!” It should be noted that Flipkart offers options like “open box delivery” to avoid such online delivery frauds, allowing customers to verify that they have only gotten the intended item. Before providing the One Time Password, the customer may ask the delivery person to open the box and confirm whether the product he ordered is correct or is not damaged. But according to Chinmaya Ramana, the “open box delivery” option was not available at the time of placing the order. When he found the stone inside the package he immediately informed the seller and asked for a refund but the vendor turned down the request. According to Chinmaya after that, he informed about the delivery fraud to Flipkart. “I informed Flipkart about the scam with all the evidence the same day, they said they needed time to resolve the complaint. On 23 October, I was emailed informing that the seller had rejected the return request and there was no damage to the product during transportation,” he wrote. Fortunately, the business granted a full refund when he vented his frustration on social media, which generated a lot of unwanted press. This is said to be the longest period of downtime reported by users in India and elsewhere where users were not able to access the well-known messaging service owned by Facebook parent Meta. This was the longest outage that WhatsApp has ever experienced, lasting for approximately two hours. Android, iOS, and desktop users were not able to send messages in chats or in groups, or make phone and video conversations starting around noon. Additionally, the WhatsApp Web apps were affected by the outage, and some WhatsApp settings, such as privacy and status settings, were also inaccessible. Additionally, users have gone to Twitter to voice their complaints about the service’s outages using the hashtag #whatsappdown. Over 27,000 users reported an outage of WhatsApp, according to the website tracking service Downdetector. Meta spokesperson in a statement to ANI said, “We’re aware that some people are currently having trouble sending messages and we’re working to restore WhatsApp for everyone as quickly as possible.” According to Downdetector, at about 12:30 PM on Tuesday, users in India started to report problems using WhatsApp, with about 2,610 incidents.
