Nokia 9 PureView in-display fingerprint scanner has this serious bug

0

Nokia 9 PureView was launched by the HMD Global at the MWC 2019 in Barcelona and the handset made heads turn with the penta-camera setup on its back panel. The Nokia 9 PureView is the flagship device from the company and although it is powered by an older Snapdragon 845 SoC, it still considered to be one among the best smartphones that have been launched in 2019. But now, reports have surfaced online that claim that the Nokia 9 PureView is having security issues with its in-display fingerprint scanner.

Some users reported that the in-display fingerprint scanner of the Nokia 9 PureView is accepting unregistered fingerprints to unlock the device. The fingerprint scanner of the Nokia 9 PureView is also letting chewing gum and random objects unlock the smartphone. On this note, HMD Global confirmed that it is investigating the malfunction further to see if the reports are true or not, and if it is true then what is the cause behind it and how can they fix it. Currently, it is not known whether the malfunction is related to hardware or software.

A Twitter user with the name DecodedPixel shared a video on his handle where his Nokia 9 PureView is being unlocked with a pack of chewing gum. He also said that, he was able to unlock his device using someone else’s fingerprints. He was even able to unlock the device using a coin and leather gloves as well. Other Twitter and Reddit users confirmed that they were also able to unlock their Nokia 9 PureView using unregistered fingerprints or objects.

On this matter, the Global Chief Officer of HMD Global Juho Sarvikas responded to the user saying that the matter was being investigated.  He also said that his team in the UK will reach out to the user if they were able to recreate and reproduce the issue on their own unit. Sarvikas also said that he would take the user’s phone to investigate the malfunction further and find a solution.

Although not much is known about the issue, but if it’s a software issue that the HMD Global should be able to fix it with an update. But if it’s a hardware issue then the company might face some problems.

It should be noted that, the Samsung Galaxy S10 had also faced similar less-secure face unlock feature, but it turned out to be a turned-on option in Settings menu of the device. the problem in the Galaxy S10 was fixed by turning the Settings off.

Redmi 7 vs Realme C2: Comparison

Xiaomi has finally launched its much-awaited Redmi 7 handset in India alongside the selfie-centric Redmi Y3. Before today, there was no official word about the launch of the Redmi 7 from Xiaomi. Instead, only some leaks and speculations had surfaced online, so today’s launch comes as a surprise. The Redmi 7 was already launched in China first so we already knew the specifications of the smartphone. The difference was in the RAM/storage variants that were launched in India, and of course, we did not know about the pricing. Besides this, the colour names of the Indian variants of the Redmi 7 are different despite the fact that the colours are the same as their Chinese counterparts.

On the other hand, we have the Realme C2 which has already been announced but will go on sale in the Indian market sometime later. We are comparing the Redmi 7 with the Realme C2 as both of them hold similar specifications and features. Read on to know which among the two is the handset for you:

OnePlus 7 goes official: 10 things you should know about the smartphone

OnePlus is all set to launch its next flagship smartphone – OnePlus 7 – on May 14 next month. A lot has been said about the upcoming smartphone already and as we move closer to the launch, more and more reports about it are surfacing online.

Here, we have compiled a list of ten things that you must know about the upcoming smartphone from OnePlus:

Two smartphones instead of one

If you are a OnePlus fan, we have some good news for you. This time, the Chinese smartphone brand will be launching two smartphones instead of one. It has been confirmed by CEO Pete Lau that OnePlus will be launching OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro devices. The handsets will be launching globally next month and we should mention that this is the first time that OnePlus is launching more than one smartphone at a launch event.

The first OnePlus smartphone with a QHD+ display

In his recent media interview, OnePlus CEO Pete Lau also said that the company has “invested significantly” to develop the display of its upcoming handset. He also added that the technology is said to be 3X the price of what’s the one that has been used in other flagship displays. We should mention that this is in line with the leak that said that OnePlus 7 will be the first smartphone by the Chinese brand to come with a 90Hz QHD+ display. The leak also said that OnePlus 7 Pro will sport a 6.7-inch display that will have an aspect ratio of 19.5:9. Other devices from the company till now have featured Full HD displays.

Will be powered by the most powerful processor in the world

855

This isn’t speculation. OnePlus had already confirmed that its next flagship smartphone will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 SoC. It is worth noticing that currently, this is the most powerful processor in the world, so the performance of the upcoming handsets is expected to be very good. We should also add that OnePlus has used chipsets from Qualcomm since they launched their first ever device.

The Pro variant will sport a 48MP primary camera

OnePlus 7 Pro smartphone has also been tipped to come with triple rear camera setup and would have a 48MP primary sensor with an f/1.6 aperture and OIS as well as EIS. Besides this, there will also be an 8MP telephoto sensor with 3X zoom capability and a 16MP wide-angle sensor. OnePlus 7, on the other hand, will come with 48MP and 5MP dual rear cameras.

The smartphone will have a pop-up selfie camera

It seems like OnePlus has decided to a number of things for the first time with OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro. OnePlus 7 Pro is said to be the first ever smartphone from the company that will come with a pop-up selfie camera. On the other hand, OnePlus 7 will have waterdrop notch on its display to house the front-facing sensor. We should mention that till now, elevating selfie cameras have only been seen in handsets from Oppo and Vivo.

OnePlus 7 Pro to also house a massive battery

oneplus (2)

OnePlus 7 Pro will reportedly house a massive 4,000mAh battery. This is again the first time that a handset from the company will be seen packing battery with that much capacity. Till now, the OnePlus smartphone that has the maximum battery capacity is OnePlus 6T, that houses a 3,700mAh battery. OnePlus 7 is also said to house the battery of the same size as OnePlus 6T.

It will also have an in-display fingerprint scanner

OnePlus display

We know, you must be thinking that there’s nothing new about a OnePlus smartphone coming with an in-display fingerprint sensor, as the company did roll the feature out to OnePlus 6T. However, there will be a small difference this time. OnePlus 7 Pro is said to come with an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner, instead of the optical one that we saw on OnePlus 6T. We should mention that ultrasonic fingerprint sensors are more accurate than optical ones. Samsung Galaxy S10 also comes with an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner.

A 5G variant is expected too

OnePlus 5G (1)

A 5G variant of OnePlus 7 Pro is also expected to be launched by the company. This model will come with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 processor clubbed with Snapdragon X50 modem, that enables 5G connectivity on it. However, till the company announces this, we would suggest that you take this piece of information with a bucket of salt.

This time the focus is not just on speed

oneplus 5G phone

OnePlus is known to focus on speed and powerful performance with its flagship smartphones. However, this time, the company is not only focussing on speed. CEO Pete Lau had posted a video on his Twitter profile that said ‘Fast and Smooth.‘ While it’s nothing new for OnePlus to talk about speed, it is the first time that the company will also be focussing on the smooth performance of the device. We should also mention that this can point towards the 5G capabilities of one of the smartphones.

Will be launched in the US, Europe and India simultaneously

OnePlus 6T smartphone

For the first time ever, OnePlus will be launching its flagship smartphones simultaneously in three regions – the United States, Europe and India. The two smartphones will be launched on May 14, and in India, the launch event is scheduled to begin at 8.15 pm IST in Bengaluru.

Snap makes a comeback with Snapchat’s rebuilt Android app

It seems like Snap is finally back in the game. As a part of its earnings release, the parent company of photo-messaging app Snapchat revealed that its daily user base has grown by 4 million globally. The app now has 190 million daily active users, which is an increase from 186 million people who had been using the platform for the last two quarters.

But it is worth noticing that although the company has grown it is still one million behind its peak user base since it went public two years back in 2017. Nevertheless, the growth in Snapchat‘s user base is definitely a piece of good news for the company.

Snapchat’s CEO Evan Spiegal has also said in prepared remarks that the app has more reach than Instagram among 13-34-year-olds in the United States. He also mentioned that Snapchat is used by 75% of 13-34-year-olds and 90% of 13-24-year-olds. However, he did not say anything about how or why the app’s user base has grown so much suddenly.

It is worth mentioning that Snap has a big quarter in which it did not only get major updates but also rebuilt the Android version of its app. Although Snapchat’s new Android app does not have any major changes in UI and its basic navigation is still the same, it is now less buggy and works faster. The company had said that the new Android app was in work for years and it was spoken about at a number of prior earnings calls.

Spiegal also said that when the company announced the upgraded app, it saw a 6% rise in the number of people using it to send Snaps. The upgrade was certainly a much-needed one for the app, and since it has been revamped, it has become more enticing to users across the globe. This is particularly true considering there are billions of people who use Android smartphones.

Snapchat’s parent company held its first partner summit in Los Angeles last month where it showed advertisers, reporters and creators what all they could do with the platform. Snap also announced that Snapchat Stories would be coming to Tinder and Houseparty, and said that it plans to partner with other popular apps for the same too.

The company also spoke about its upcoming video game platform at the summit. The company also said that it has developed new AR filters that make Eiffel Tower puke rainbows.

Keeping his word, OnePlus has today announced that its OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro will be launched in India, the United States and Europe simultaneously on May 14.

It is worth noticing that this is the first time in the history of the company that its flagship smartphones will be launched at various locations at the same time. In India, the OnePlus launch event is in Bengaluru and it will begin at 8:15 pm IST. The company has said in a statement that it will be unveiling a “device of the future that features exquisite craftsmanship and breakthrough technologies.”

Along with announcing the launch date, OnePlus has also added that it will be making the entry vouchers for its event available on its website staring 10 am IST on April 25.

A dedicated page for upcoming OnePlus 7 series has already gone live on Amazon India’s website. The page says ‘Go Beyond Speed. OnePlus 7 Series Launch Event. May 14, 2019.’ Besides this, there is a ‘Notify Me’ button that those who are interested in buying the smartphone can click in order to get updates about when it goes on pre-orders.

It should also be added that Lau had recently confirmed in a media interview that the flagship devices of the company will be called OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro. He also added that OnePlus 7 Pro would come with a “super-smooth and very crisp” display.

As of now, not much is known about the specifications of the upcoming smartphones from OnePlus. We do know that both the smartphones will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 processor, as that was confirmed by the company.

Samsung Galaxy M40 spotted on Wi-Fi Alliance database: Some tech specs revealed

0

With the rise of the Samsung Galaxy A-series devices, the other budget-friendly smartphone of the South Korean technology giant aimed at millennials seems forgotten? The Samsung Galaxy M-series came before the launch of the new Galaxy A-series, but it looks like the newly launched devices of the A-series is grabbing all the headlines. On that note, the last launched device from the Galaxy M-series was the Samsung Galaxy M30 and it came with good specifications such as the triple-rear camera setup, Super AMOLED display and a big battery. But now, according to a new rumour, the next device in the Galaxy M-series is going to be the Samsung Galaxy M40. A listing on the Wi-Fi Alliance database revealed the details about the new smartphone.

According to the report, the Galaxy M40 holds a model number SM-M405F/DS and it will be the next budget-friendly device from Samsung. The listing reveals some of the features of the new Galaxy M40, such as it will run Android 9 Pie out-of-the-box and it will most probably have 128GB of internal storage. However, it is not clear if the Galaxy M40 will come with just one variant bringing 128GB storage or multiple variants. It should be noted that the sibling of the Galaxy M40, the Galaxy M30 came with only one variant so the bigger brother of the device might too follow the same footsteps.

Moreover, it is estimated that the Samsung Galaxy M40 might come with 5,000mAh battery sporting a Super AMOLED display panel. It will most likely have a triple-rear camera setup similar to the Galaxy M30. But the development and the existence of the Galaxy M40 is still not official as Samsung has made no comment on it.

If we recall, Samsung had launched the M-series devices in January with the Galaxy M10 and the Galaxy M20. Both of which were budget-friendly devices from the South Korean tech giant launched to take on Xiaomi. And the Galaxy M-series has done considerably well in the Indian market as it has sold millions of units.

The next device was the Galaxy M30 with the Super AMOLED display panel and triple-rear camera and a 5,000mAh battery. The Galaxy M30 was one tough device to beat by other Chinese companies as it offered the customers everything without being too expensive and still holding the Samsung brand. It was also priced in the mid-range segment, so the upcoming Galaxy M40 is also expected to be priced similarly. And more importantly, it is expected to be more powerful and offer more than what the Samsung Galaxy M30 does.

Apple will enable Lightroom-like apps access photos directly with iOS 13: Report

Once iOS 13 rolls out to all its devices, Apple will reportedly let third-party apps import photos directly from the external storage. If this is indeed true, then a key reason for frustration among a number of Apple users is going to go. As of now, in order to import images, iPad Pro users have to first put them in the system’s camera roll and then move them to an app like Lightroom CC.

It is worth mentioning that prior to this, the Cupertino based technology giant also rolled out a Siri Shortcut in order to automate the process. However, the upcoming new feature will make it unnecessary for iPad users to follow so many steps.

The report about the feature first surfaced in 9to5Mac, which further said that Apple will be announcing improvements to Marzipan apps, Siri, and ARKit — the company’s AR developer kit. Here’s a list of changes that are expected:

Marzipan: Apple’s framework that lets iOS developers port their apps to the Mac will get support for more Mac-specific features including Touch Bar and menu bar. In addition to this, UIKit apps will get the ability to open multiple windows and Split View apps will get better support for resizing.

Siri: Apple’s digital assistant will get access to a number of new ‘Intents’, which basically are spoken commands by the user that the third party apps can integrate with. According to the report that has surfaced online, Intents will include commands like media playback, voice calling and search.

Augmented Reality apps: The AR apps on Apple devices will be able to detect human poses going forward. This will be made possible because of improvements to ARKit and it will also benefit from developers that will enable them to visually create AR experiences. Augmented Reality is also about to get support for controllers and headsets with touch controllers and stereo headsets.

Miscellaneous: Other changes that are set to happen, including giving developers more control over iPhone‘s Taptic Engine, expanding support for NFC tag, letting developers upgrade their machine learning models on the device. As of now, they need to be pre-trained.

It is worth mentioning that Apple is expected to announce these features and a number of other changes at its upcoming developers’ conference in June this year – WWDC 2019. Major announcements that are expected by the company are iOS 13, tvOS 13, macOS 10.15, and watchOS 6 among others.
