Signal, a cross-platform centralized encrypted messaging service, has gained much popularity since WhatsApp brought changes to its privacy policy. According to the new policy, WhatsApp will share its data with Facebook. This step was perceived by many WhatsApp users to be infringing upon their privacy. As a result, Signal rose to the occasion and attracted many WhatsApp users as it claimed to keep their data protected.
According to a tweet by Signal, “Nobody ever invited Big Tech to join a group chat, but they still hang around and know what’s going on. Signal knows nothing. Private groups protect your group names, group membership, group messages, and even the group avatar with end-to-end encryption”.

Signal claims that the chats among the Signal users are end-to-end encrypted. The company asserts that Signal knows nothing. Unlike the “Big Tech”, the information sent or received by Signal users is not shared by any person or firm. Even the company itself does not intercept the chats. Even the group chats, names, and avatars are end-to-end encrypted. As a result, the groups and their chats remain anonymous except on the users’ devices.

Signal gave the reference of the “Big Tech” to claim that the company has no involvement in the group discussions. According to Signal, the private groups are meant to remain private. Signal asserts that it has no record of the discussions that have been carried in Signal groups. Neither are they shared with any individual or a firm. Signal revealed that it is working on a new technology that will enhance the scalability of private groups.

There are two ways to store data on a server. The way is to keep it in a plaintext format and the other is the encrypted format. Both storage methods have their pros and cons. When the data is stored in a plaintext format, the retrieving process is quite fast the data simply needs to be transferred between the server and the user’s device. However, this speed comes with a disadvantage. Since the data is present in plaintext format, it is visible on the server in its original form.
Signal claims that it follows a different algorithm as compared to other companies. The company makes sure that the data stored in its servers stay in an encrypted format so that the privacy of the user remains intact. When fetched from the server, the data is converted back to its original format on the user’s device. This ensures that no one but parties involved in the chat can access the data in its raw form.

Facebook-owned photo and video-sharing social networking service, Instagram will add a new feature to prevent harassment in direct messages (DMs). This feature is in line with the company’s commitment to preventing child abuse for which it may soon release a platform for kids under 13.
Why does Instagram want to include the new feature in direct messages?
Instagram has been resolving issues raised by communities across the globe regarding bullying, women safety, and child safety. Recently, some football players in the UK complained regarding the racist comments they received as direct messages in the app. The DM section does not offer automated tools to filter messages as offered by the comment section. As a result, the company wants to check the usage of the app for harassing others via direct messages. Instagram will add features to filter message requests and even block the senders.
This is not the first time Facebook has stood against harassment. To prevent harassment of children through the Instagram app, Facebook has been working on a platform for kids under 13. The company has created a new team to develop a dedicated version of Instagram for kids. This platform will be launched as a separate application offering parental control features and strict regulations against the collection of kids’ data. Instagram’s terms of use permit only people above 13 to create an account. The company does not want the children to get deprived of the positive aspects of social media.
How will Instagram’s new anti-harassment feature of direct messages work?
Instagram’s new feature will allow the users to block requests from users that they find to be rude, abusive, or harassing. Moreover, they can block the senders to prevent all messages requests in the future. The app will enable the users to preemptively block new accounts that may be created by a particular sender. This step will defeat the efforts of those users who target others using multiple accounts.
Instagram may also add a new tab to keep message requests from those users who he/she does not follow. This feature will keep the chats separate from message requests. Only when the user accepts a request, will it appear in the messages. Instagram may also add a filtering tool to automatically hide message requests carrying offensive text or emojis. Facebook has collaborated with anti-bullying organisations to develop a dictionary of offensive words for automated filtering of message requests. The users may customise the library and add their own words that they perceive as offensive.

The users will have the choice to either discard the Story, save it as a Draft, or continue with the Story design process. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the face mask has become an essential gear to wear. However, it obstructs the Face ID feature of the iPhone. The iOS 14.5 update will enable the device to recognise you even when the face mask is on provided you are wearing your Apple Watch. To enable this setting, go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode and toggle the Unlock with the Apple Watch option on. You’ll need to turn on the Wrist Detection feature on your Apple Wach and enable the passcode.
FaceTime and phone call features
The new iOS 14.5 will enable Siri to notify you regarding the incoming calls when you’re wearing your AirPods. Moreover, Siri will read out the messages in your AirPods. To make calls to emergency contacts, you will just need to say “Siri, call my emergency contact”. Siri will also support group FaceTime calls. You may provide the list of contacts that you wish to include in the FaceTime Call. You will have the flexibility to ask Siri to call a particular group in iMessage.
