Acer has been building laptops since ages now and every year they end up surprising us with the latest tech and over the top features, especially in their gaming range. We recently got our hands on the latest from its camp called Acer Nitro 5. This is the 2020 edition of the laptop and here is what we think of the top of the line gaming laptop.
Design and Display
Out of the box, Acer Nitro 5 2020 looks similar to the previous generation with changes on the lid and the rear. The Acer logo can be seen in the middle part of the lid, which has sharp protruding edges. These give the gaming essence to the laptop when seen from afar. Also, the rear exhaust system has been given red accents around it, which again makes it stand out of the crowd.
The overall mix of hard plastic and metal around the body keeps the weight light yet sturdy (2.3Kg). We would have been happier if thicker plastic was used on the lid as right now it is on the flimsier side. This might have been done to keep the weight on the lower side, but one does not mind a few extra grams for protection.
When you open the Acer Nitro 5 2020 you are greeted with a 15.6-inch FHD 144Hz display with regular bezels and a webcam on top. On the bottom part, you get a fairly large RGB light-driven full QWERTY keyboard with Numpad. The off-centre trackpad is right under the keyboard, which on most counts works well. But since this is a gaming laptop, you would hardly be using it. The keys on the keyboard are large and very decent for gaming. However, we must say we have seen better coming from the brand Acer.
The display is very good for gaming and we loved our experience with it, while playing games like DOTA 2 or Counter-Strike: GO. Both ran very well at 120 FPS without breaking a sweat. The speakers on the system are down-firing and at 2W each they bring the movie experience to life, but for gaming, our recommendation is to keep the headphones handy. On the sides, users will find three USB 3.2 gen 2 ports, one 3.5mm audio port, Ethernet jack, USB type-c and an HDMI out port. The charging port is located at the back. Performance
Before we deep dive into how this machine performed overall, let’s quickly tell you about its insides. Available in Intel Core i5 and Core i7 (10th gen) configurations, we reviewed the latter. This one has a clock speed of up to 2.6GHz and is a quad-core CPU. With that, it had 8GB RAM and 128GB of SSD storage along with 1TB HDD space.
For graphics, the Acer Nitro 5 2020 has NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 graphic card, which is its a mid-end graphic card of the series but does a very good job in playing games like PUBG, COD at high settings. The GPU also has 4GB dedicated RAM on it.
Together this makes up for one of the best gaming experiences. Over that, with WiFi 6 onboard and Killer E2600, Acer Nitro 5 2020 makes sure that you do not face any lag during gameplay. The pings stay stable because of the same, no matter which ISP you are on. We tested it with both Act Fibrenet and Airtel WiFi connections and the laptop did not give us any hard time.
When it comes to cooling, this is an aspect that could have been better. When gaming, the laptop does become hot after prolonged use. But it cools down as quickly when you stop gaming. The twin fans do help a lot in keeping the system cool. Switching over to its battery life, we extracted 4.5 hours of backup when not gaming. But when gaming one would want to keep the charger attached since that will supply the right wattage for the graphic card and CPU, so that you can play games at full potential.
Verdict
All in all, Acer Nitro 5 2020 is one of the best gaming machines launched this year. At Rs 1,05,000 (price on the box) this machine does seem to be on the higher side. However, there are a lot of discounts available on it and you can easily get it for Rs 10,000-15,000 cheaper online.

These days OnePlus seems to be on a launch spree. The Chinese smartphone company has officially unveiled the much-speculated OnePlus Nord N10 5G and Nord N100. Both the smartphones belong to the OnePlus Nord family which was first introduced in India a few months back which is the company’s most affordable smartphone to date. With the recent launch of HomePod mini, Apple revealed that this ultimate smart speaker comes packed with a lot of innovations. The most interesting is a new Intercom feature that offers a quick and easy way for family members to connect with each other at home.
According to Apple, this feature enables one person to send an Intercom message from one HomePod to another — whether in a different room, a specific zone, or multiple rooms throughout the home — and their voice will automatically play on the designated HomePod speaker.
Furthermore, the Cupertino-based tech giant revealed that this Intercom feature works perfectly with iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, AirPods, and CarPlay. The reason behind this is that everyone in the household can get Intercom notifications and send Intercom messages from the backyard or on their way home.
As the HomePod software version 14.1 and Apple’s latest iOS version 14.2 are currently undergoing beta testing, the following steps will enable a user to access Intercom on the ultimate speaker HomePod:
Firstly, one has to install HomePod software version 14.1 (which includes support for HomePod mini and new Siri and Intercom features)
Once HomePod software version 14.1 is installed, click on the Home app.
Double click on little house icon that is located at the top-most left side.
Click on “Home Settings.”
Now, scroll down to find “Intercom” and click on it.
You can now make changes to notification settings to choose who can use the Intercom feature at your house to connect with each other.
Wondering how one could Intercom to rely message? Well, a report by MacRumors has notified that Intercom messages can be shared to the HomePods across a home via Siri on iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, another HomePod, etc. All that is needed is activation of Siri on your iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, CarPlay, or AirPods. Once Siri is activated, one has to say “Intercom” and record your message. Isn’t this amazing to stay connected with each other without the need to move out of your place?

After launching Redmi K30 5G Racing Edition smartphone in May this year, it is officially confirmed that Xiaomi is now set to lift curtains off its Redmi K30S handset on October 27. In a teaser poster on China’s microblogging site Weibo, Redmi General Manager Lu Weibing revealed that Redmi K30S Extreme Commemorative Edition will be introduced in China at 2pm CST (which translates to 11:30 am as per IST) tomorrow.
According to the teaser poster on Weibo, Lu Weibing has revealed that the handset will be introduced in black and silver colours. On the camera front, this much-anticipated handset is likely to carry a rectangular-shaped module with rear camera fitted in it. Mind you! This rear camera will be further carrying three sensors. In addition, the camera module carries a light sensor as well as a flash. It was also stated that the main camera will comprise of a 64MP sensor.
Moreover, many have regarded the Redmi K30S as a refurbished version of Mi 10T. The primary reason behind this is the TENNA listing that hints that the key specifications of the Redmi K30S are similar to the Mi 10T. Running octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 SoC, this handset is expected to carry 12GB RAM as well as an internal storage capacity of 512GB. Privacy concerns have been on a rise with the introduction of digital technology while children are apparently more vulnerable than adults to privacy online threats as they lack digital skills or awareness of privacy risks. Taking this into account Google has removed three apps from the Play Store that are popular among children. These apps were turned down after a report by the International Digital Accountability Council (IDAC) over privacy violations. The three apps are Princess Salon, Number Coloring, and Cats & Cosplay. All these apps have more than 20 million downloads on Google Play Store.According to a report by International Digital Accountability Council (IDAC) were found to be doing data collection practices by three software development kits (SDKs) used within those apps. The researchers at the non-profit warned Google of potential issues with three SDKs used in those apps – Unity, Umeng, and Appodeal. Taking this issue into account Google itself performed an investigation and immediately removed these apps from Play Store as a corrective action in response.This trio was found to be violating Google’s data collection policies, by hypothetically gaining access to users’ Android ID and AAID (Android Advertising ID) numbers. As per IDAC, SDK versions of Unity, Appodeal, and Umeng used within the three apps were collecting data. While the AAID is the Android’s unique ID used for advertising and, unlike the Android ID (another Android unique identifier), users have the ability to reset their AAID.The AAID is basically the permit for gathering all the user data in one place. For instance, if a company is willing to advertise their brand of potato chips to people who like ice cream, they can contact a platform and pay for their potato chip ad to be shown to users whose AAIDs indicate that they like ice cream. FAU-G an Indian alternative to PUBG game was announced by Akshay Kumar just after the Chinese Gaming app ban in the country. Till now a no specific timeline was announced and now a new trailer of the upcoming gaming app has been released revealing the official launch timeline. The trailer has been shared via Twitter by the Bangalore-based publisher nCore Games the developer of the game and is widely being promoted by Indian game industry veteran Vishal Gondal and actor Akshay Kumar. For the unknowns, FAU-G is short for Fearless and United-Guards and is touted to be a contribution towards the “Atma Nirbhar Bharat” (self-reliant India) campaign by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The is a one-minute short trailer video that reveals the game is set in the Galwan Valley which is also a controversial flashpoint between China and India. Following the Galwan Valley skirmish on 15 June the Government of India decided to put a ban on hundreds of Chinese app in the country including PUBG Mobile as well as TikTok. Rendering to a research done by the antivirus firm Avast 21 adware gaming apps on Google’s Play Store. After taking this into account the researcher has reported Google reportedly Google is still investigating and out of the 21 apps 19 are still available on the Play Store. As per the firm, the adware is part of the HiddenAds family that is pretending to be Trojan malware.The Cybersecurity firm Avast says that this adware displays intrusive ads and tempting users into downloading the adware by posing as gaming apps. The apps promise to virtually “let your car fly across the road, trees, hills”, to shoot criminals from a helicopter, or, for household enthusiasts, allow players to virtually iron their clothes. While a mobile apps marketing intelligence and insights company SensorTower estimates that these so far, these masked apps have been downloaded about eight million times.On the other hand, many of the reviews on the Google Play Store indicates that these apps misled users on the Play Store via advertisements on YouTube, promising a different game than what the app ultimately offered. Following the download, advertisements started flooding their phones.Jakub Vávra, Threat Analyst at Avast said, “Developers of adware are increasingly using social media channels as regular marketers would. This time, users reported they were targeted with ads promoting the games on YouTube. In September we saw adware spread via TikTok. The popularity of these social networks makes them an attractive advertising platform, also for cybercriminals, to target a younger audience.” He further added, While Google is doing everything possible to prevent HiddenAds from entering its Play Store, the malicious apps keep finding new ways to disguise their true purpose, thus slipping through to the platform and then to users’ phones. Now mute chats forever with the new WhatsApp feature. The Social media app is rolling out a new ‘Always’ option in the chat setting to let you mute your chat forever. Until now the feature was under beta testing and now a stable version is out for the general public.Facebook-owned chatting app WhatsApp took to Twitter to announce the new ‘Always’ option in chat settings to allow the users to mute a chat forever. Earlier the users were allowed to mute notifications for chats individually for up to 8 hours and 1 week and 1 year. But now the 1 year has been replaced by the Always option in the chat settings whereas the 8 hours and 1-week option remains unchanged. The feature is being rolled out to iOS, Android and WhatsApp web as well.How to enable the Always Mute option on WhatsApp for Android users?The new feature will allow you to mute a chat forever instead of 1 year. Here is how you can enable it on your device:
If you have an Android device all you need to do is simply open WhatsApp on your smartphone
Now go to a chat, tap on the three-dot button on the top right corner of a specific chat.
Now select Mute notifications
A new window will appear to set a time duration to keep a chat mute.
Out of the three options 8 hours, 1 week, or Always hit on the latter one to and that chat will mute for an indefinite period.

Last month LG came up with an innovative device under the Explorer Project. The company introduced the LG Wing that comes with Swivel mode and a Gimbal camera. As said, it is part of the Explorer Project which is intended to offer new usability ideas to the smartphone market. The state-of-the-art device is now coming to India and the company has confirmed that it will arrive on October 28. The device was launched in two colour options and the USP of the smartphone is its swivel screen that rotates clockwise in 90 degrees to allow new use cases. The overall mix of hard plastic and metal around the body keeps the weight light yet sturdy (2.3Kg). We would have been happier if thicker plastic was used on the lid as right now it is on the flimsier side. This might have been done to keep the weight on the lower side, but one does not mind a few extra grams for protection.
When you open the Acer Nitro 5 2020 you are greeted with a 15.6-inch FHD 144Hz display with regular bezels and a webcam on top. On the bottom part, you get a fairly large RGB light-driven full QWERTY keyboard with Numpad. The off-centre trackpad is right under the keyboard, which on most counts works well. But since this is a gaming laptop, you would hardly be using it. The keys on the keyboard are large and very decent for gaming. However, we must say we have seen better coming from the brand Acer.
The display is very good for gaming and we loved our experience with it, while playing games like DOTA 2 or Counter-Strike: GO. Both ran very well at 120 FPS without breaking a sweat. The speakers on the system are down-firing and at 2W each they bring the movie experience to life, but for gaming, our recommendation is to keep the headphones handy. On the sides, users will find three USB 3.2 gen 2 ports, one 3.5mm audio port, Ethernet jack, USB type-c and an HDMI out port. The charging port is located at the back. 
Performance
Before we deep dive into how this machine performed overall, let’s quickly tell you about its insides. Available in Intel Core i5 and Core i7 (10th gen) configurations, we reviewed the latter. This one has a clock speed of up to 2.6GHz and is a quad-core CPU. With that, it had 8GB RAM and 128GB of SSD storage along with 1TB HDD space.
For graphics, the Acer Nitro 5 2020 has NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 graphic card, which is its a mid-end graphic card of the series but does a very good job in playing games like PUBG, COD at high settings. The GPU also has 4GB dedicated RAM on it.
Together this makes up for one of the best gaming experiences. Over that, with WiFi 6 onboard and Killer E2600, Acer Nitro 5 2020 makes sure that you do not face any lag during gameplay. The pings stay stable because of the same, no matter which ISP you are on. We tested it with both Act Fibrenet and Airtel WiFi connections and the laptop did not give us any hard time.
When it comes to cooling, this is an aspect that could have been better. When gaming, the laptop does become hot after prolonged use. But it cools down as quickly when you stop gaming. The twin fans do help a lot in keeping the system cool. Switching over to its battery life, we extracted 4.5 hours of backup when not gaming. But when gaming one would want to keep the charger attached since that will supply the right wattage for the graphic card and CPU, so that you can play games at full potential.
Verdict
All in all, Acer Nitro 5 2020 is one of the best gaming machines launched this year. At Rs 1,05,000 (price on the box) this machine does seem to be on the higher side. However, there are a lot of discounts available on it and you can easily get it for Rs 10,000-15,000 cheaper online.
