Huawei Watch GT 2e smartwatch review: A sporty smartwatch for everyday use

0
Huawei launched the GT 2 series of smartwatches last year and now they are out with its sibling in the form of Huawei Watch GT 2e. We played around with it for more than 10 days to understand what makes it tick and what makes it talk. This is our assessment of the Huawei Watch GT 2e.

In This Article

Design

Well, out of the box Huawei Watch GT 2e does look a lot like the GT 2. But it does have its own distinct features. For example, it is built for the more sporty younger generation who are always up to something outdoorsy. The band is two-tone and is made of rubber silicone that does make it a good companion if you are hitting the gym or are going for a run. The perforations on the strap make it more breathable and sweat will not stick around for long on it. The silver metal dial comes back on the Huawei Watch GT 2e, however this time it is a seamless experience between the crown and the glass. 2 buttons for power on/off and feature settings can also be found on the steel façade. You do get a large 1.39-inch AMOLED touch screen on the Huawei Watch GT 2e, same as its sibling. Will talk more about it in the performance section. At the back, you get the charging points around the heart rate as well as SpO2 (blood oxygen saturation) monitor. Both of which, by the way, are quite accurate. All in all, in the looks and design department the Huawei Watch GT 2e does a brilliant job. Yes, it is slightly heavier than the regular smartwatches’ you get these days, but those do not provide you with the extra-long battery life as this one does.huawei GT 2e back

Performance

First, let us quickly talk about the tech specs of the Huawei Watch GT 2e. It comes with a 1.39-inch AMOLED display with touch and gesture controls. It comes with 4GB of internal memory, a Kirin A1 CPU and the battery can last for 14 days. Bluetooth V5.1 is supported, which makes it easier to operate with the latest smartphones at better speeds. Talking about which you can download the Huawei Health app on your smartphone to operate many of its features including the watch faces. This we loved, as the library of watch faces is very large, and one can have fun with a new watch face every day. Over that, the Huawei Watch GT 2e is 5ATM water-resistant. That means is it water-resistant in up to 50 meters of water. You can take out for a swim in the pool or in the ocean and nothing will happen to it. There are over 80 work out modes supported by Huawei Watch GT 2e including climbing, cycling, running, triathlons, hiking, swimming and more. Does not matter which sport you are training for this watch has a training mode for you. We took it out for a run, and it was very accurate. 9 out of 10 times we got correct data from it. Huawei Watch GT 2e smartwatch has a sleep monitor too. It is a great feature to own to track your sleep patterns on the Huawei app and it gives you suggestions for better sleep as well. We for one didn’t use it a lot as the watch is a bit too bulky for us to sleep with. But for some, it might be good. Overall, we found the performance of the Huawei Watch GT 2e to be quite accurate and the large and bright touchscreen makes it somewhat of an eye candy. You can change the straps also, but it is a bit of a task to switch them.

Verdict

All in all, at Rs 11,990 the Huawei Watch GT 2e is a steal. It has a lot of features going for it and one just cannot get over the long 14-day battery life. No matter how you use it, you end up getting more than 11 days at least. Users can also take snapshots or control music via this smartwatch and connected Huawei smartphone. In India, it is available in 2 colours Blue and the Green (the one we reviewed). Must say our heart is set on the green colour.

Motorola One Fusion+ review: The complete package in a budget

Lenovo owned company, Motorola, launched One Fusion+ in India, which is the company’s first handset that comes with a pop-up selfie camera. Also, it offers a resolution of 16-megapixels. For the unknown, this device is not the first smartphone to have a motorised front camera by Moto. Motorola One Hyper, which was launched last year but could not make it to the Indian market was companies first. Moto One Fusion+ has been launched with a price tag of Rs 16,999, giving a tough fight to its competitors that fall under the same price segment. So today we are here with the review of Motorola One Fusion+ to help you know how the phone performs and its design value while covering the other aspects of the handset.

Design and Display

Starting with the design first, the all-new Motorola One Fusion+ is not as new as it seems. It’s 2020, while other smartphone companies are experimenting with the build and design of their devices, Motorola is not giving something very fresh (which we found to be unusual coming for them). There is the same plastic body, though this time it has not gone just plain jane, it has textured back with the same vertical camera set up and fingerprint sensor with a batwing Moto logo.  Design and Display There is now a premium touch given to it that does not look more plasticky. However, the company has not provided any protected layer (in the form of screen guard) to protect the phone against scratches, which again is odd in this price segment. Moving on, not using a whole glass body makes the phone less bulky. The box comes with a phone back cover too, but one does not need it as it already has a plastic back and is good enough. But it does catch fingerprints easily so to avoid that you can use the case on the phone.    Design and Display There’s no notch on the front, so you get a clean full display with slim bezels on the sides with a noticeable chin. The Volume rocker placed on the right side of the phone. While the audio jack, a USB Type-C port and a speaker are positioned at the bottom. As said, you get a full display experience on this phone as there is no hindrance in the form of a notch. Motorola One Fusion+ comes with a 6.5-inch full-HD+ display supporting 1,080×2,340 pixels of resolution, 19.5:9 aspect ratio and 395ppi pixel density. It has an Always-On Display that will display notifications on screen as and when they come. Streaming videos on it is such a treat to your eyes as the display is sharp while the colours are vibrant. So you get an impressive nice-looking and a slim LCD panel with a standard refresh rate of 60Hz and support for DCI-P3 colours.

Performance and camera

Motorola One Fusion+ has arrived with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 730 processor together with Adreno 618 GPU for graphics. This smartphone is only sold in a single 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage model, which can be expanded up to 1TB using a hybrid microSD card.  To find out how fast the latest offering from Motorola is we ran a few benchmarking apps on it. The results below are very decent.  Geekbench Multi-core:1,711 Single-core:543 AnTuTu:2,74,004 On the software front, you get a stock Android experience on this smartphone, which is clutter-free. Users will not find any unnecessary apps on the Motorola One Fusion+. You get a smooth performance even while multitasking. Though there are a few uninstallable apps on it, you can disable the rest if they are of no use to you. Also, you can personalise the layout of your home screen, fonts and more. This is the best part about the phone as you do not need to install a third-party app to personalise your device to change the shapes of the icons, customise UI colour and more. During the testing, it did not hang at all, which is impressive. Also, not to forget this device has the gesture shortcuts for fast access to the camera, flashlight and more. And yes there you also have nice looking live wallpapers. review of Motorola One Fusion+ On the gaming front, Motorola One Fusion+ also did well. We ran Call of Duty Mobile and PUBG Mobile with ease. Though there is a single speaker on the phone, there is an amazing sound experience that we missed in some of the smartphones in the segment. It is loud and very clear.  Next, we tested the performance of the camera, Motorola One Fusion+ has a 1+3 camera setup. There is a 64-megapixel primary sensor with an f/1.8 aperture. Further assisted by, a secondary 8-megapixel ultra-wide angle lens with f/2.2 aperture, a 5-megapixel macro sensor with f/2.4 aperture and a 2-megapixel depth sensor with f/2.4 aperture. While on the front there is a 16-megapixel pop-up selfie camera with f/2.2 aperture. Personally speaking, Motorola devices offer the best camera performance in any price segment. Motorola One Fusion+ has various camera modes to capture the most beautiful shots. The device performed its best even in darkness; surprisingly, the pictures turned out to be soft and less noisy. It comes with a dedicated Night Vision feature which enhanced the pictures more. While the HDR Mode delivered pulsating images.  Shooting the images from the wide-angle camera also delivered good shots. Some of the images seemed to be less sharp when compared to the primary camera, but that is the case with most smartphones these days. On the other hand, the macro images on the phone captured were always impressive and sharp. We must add, the macro images produced were well detailed and came out with natural colours close to life. The portrait shots were impressive too, the edge detection on it is also on point, and you can also set the level of blur before you take one.  The Motorola One Fusion+ comes with a pop-up selfie camera that pops up when you switch from rear to front. The images captured here were perfect and had the right amount of details with perfect edge detection. And, the night mode comes to the rescue in low light situations. Overall the camera setup did impress us.  After all the testing, the device’s battery lasted for more than a day when used excessively. This included watching videos, movies, capturing images, gaming and browsing Facebook and checking our Instagram feed. If you are a moderate user, then it would last for 1.5 days, while for light users it can last for more than that on the Motorola One Fusion+.

Verdict

On the whole, we would say the Motorola One Fusion+ has good battery life as there is a 5,000mAh battery bundled with an 18W TurboCharger in the box for faster charging. The cameras were great, and they also performed well. The rear-mounted fingerprint sensor is also quick. Motorola One Fusion+ can handle PUBG Mobile and Call of Duty well at high settings too. During the review, we did not come across any lag or heating issues. All in all, it is a whole package and gives a tough competition to other brands who are offering smartphones in this price segment. Huawei, a tech giant of China, wants to help Canada develop 5G technologies

0
5G is the main priority of digital charter  When Justin Trudeau’s government took over the country in 2016, it laid out a plan for the development of the digital economy. In 2019 the Ministry of Innovation, Science and Industry published the Digital Charter. The document is a set of principles that Canada will follow as the digital economy advances. The government will try to provide equal access to digital technologies and the internet for all citizens. They want the process of digitization to be transparent and secure. For this purpose, they organized meetings and panels with industry representatives and businesspersons all over the country. A major part of the digital economy is cryptocurrencies. The government actively supports the industry. Other branches were allowed to accept digital currencies from their users. The iGaming sector was one of the first branches to adopt financial technologies and allow their users to play with digital currencies. After this change, the industry started booming. The users were not limited to the traditional money option. Providing the choice to pay with cryptocurrencies made it easier for players not just in Canada but around the world to spend more time playing. Crypto revolution was a true gift for players who received bitcoin slots, roulette and jackpot games. Top-tier casinos created exclusive games for only BTC users and that decision attracted more players. The transactions of traditional money can consume too much time. It might take days before the money reaches the destination. Allowing cryptocurrencies enabled users, especially outside Canada, to not worry about time anymore. The digital currency transactions take under an hour sometimes and are very fast and easy. Canada saw the potential of digital currencies, unlike other big countries like The United States. Digital industries and cryptocurrencies turned out to be a perfect match, and many Canadian companies saw a big growth after implementing digital currencies, as we saw on the example of iGaming platforms. Experts believe that after iGaming industry’s success, 5G would be another ‘winning decision” from Trudeau’s office. 5G would help the further development of the digital economy and could potentially lessen the impact and economic losses caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The First 5G Network Will Roll-out in Canada Anytime in 2020 Telus is planning on launching the first 5G network in Canada by the end of 2020. The company might use Huawei’s technologies. CFO of Telus Dough French said that the company tries to follow the government regulations and so far everything is going according to the plan. The company is also open to more proposals from tech firms besides Huawei. Other companies want to start a 5G network in 2020. However, the government of Canada is considering imposing restrictions on the companies because of some privacy concerns. Why Huawei was the first choice The Chinese company Huawei is one of the top network infrastructure providers in the world. They also sell the equipment for much lower prices than their competitors. Huawei is leading research on the development of technologies and owns 2,700 patents, even though not all of them are trustworthy. Telus and Huawei are long time collaborators and Telus has been getting data for lower rates than they could get from other companies. Imposing restrictions on 5G could mean big delays in time and a big rise in the cost. The US Presses Canada on Their Decision Over Huawei’s Ban Huawei is considered untrustworthy by the United States government. The US authorities accuse Huawei of spying on their clients and conducting unlawful surveillance, as well as using the gathered data for their close collaboration with the Chinese government. The US authorities want Canada to ban Huawei’s involvement in the development of 5G in Canada. The Canadian government stated that they are working on the subject of 5G and that Canada will make its own decision about the 5G networks in the country. IBM reveals new POWER10 processor: Here’s everything you must know

0
In order to offer a platform to meet the unique needs of enterprise hybrid cloud computing, IBM revealed the next generation of its IBM POWER CPU family known as IBM POWER10. The IBM POWER10 processor uses a design focused on energy efficiency and performance in a 7nm form factor with an expected improvement of up to 3x greater processor energy efficiency, workload capacity, and container density than the IBM POWER9 processor. Samsung Electronics will manufacture the IBM POWER10 processor, combining Samsung’s industry-leading semiconductor manufacturing technology with IBM’s CPU designs. Asserting that enterprise-grade hybrid clouds require a robust on-premises and off-site architecture inclusive of hardware and co-optimized software, Stephen Leonard, GM of IBM Cognitive Systems, said, “With IBM POWER10, we’ve designed the premier processor for enterprise hybrid cloud, delivering the performance and security that clients expect from IBM. With our stated goal of making Red Hat OpenShift the default choice for hybrid cloud, IBM POWER10 brings hardware-based capacity and security enhancements for containers to the IT infrastructure level.” Built using 7nm process technology, IBM POWER10 is expected to deliver up to a 3x gain in processor energy efficiency per socket, increasing workload capacity in the same power envelope as IBM POWER9 CPU. This anticipated improvement in capacity is designed to allow IBM POWER10-based systems to support up to 3x increases in users, workloads and OpenShift container density for hybrid cloud workloads as compared to IBM POWER9-based systems. This can affect multiple datacenter attributes to drive greater efficiency and reduce costs, such as space and energy use, while also allowing hybrid cloud users to achieve more work in a smaller footprint. Furthermore, IBM POWER10 offers hardware memory encryption for end-to-end security and faster cryptography performance thanks to additional AES encryption engines for both today’s leading encryption standards as well as anticipated future encryption protocols like quantum-safe cryptography and fully homomorphic encryption. IBM POWER10 is designed to give users dynamic execution register control, meaning users could design applications that are more resistant to attacks with minimal performance loss. In a breakthrough new technology called Memory Inception, IBM claims that its POWER10 processor is designed to allow any of the IBM POWER10 processor-based systems in a cluster to access and share each other’s memory, creating multi-Petabyte sized memory clusters. Memory Inception offers the potential to drive cost and energy savings for both cloud users and provides. This is because cloud providers can offer more capability using fewer servers, while cloud users can lease fewer resources to meet their IT needs. The IBM POWER10 processor is designed to enhance in-core AI inferencing capability without requiring additional specialized hardware. This new processor is expected to help infuse AI workloads into typical enterprise applications to glean more impactful insights from data. With hardware co-optimized for Red Hat OpenShift, IBM POWER10-based servers will deliver the future of the hybrid cloud when they become available in the second half of 2021. Here is what Intel unveiled during the Architecture Day 2020: Tiger Lake CPUs, Xe Graphics, 10nm SuperFin Process and more

Intel, during its virtual Architecture Day 2020 seminar made significant disclosures about the details of its upcoming products, especially in the department of  CPU and GPU. At the  Architecture Day 2020, Intel Chief Architect Raja Koduri, Intel fellows and architects provided details on the progress Intel is making on its six pillars of technology innovation: process and packaging, architecture, memory, interconnects, security and software. According to the company, it will be taking full advantage of its unique position to deliver a mix of scalar, vector, matrix and spatial architectures deployed in CPUs, GPUs, accelerators and FPGAs – unified by one API, an industry-standard open programming model to simplify application development. This year the company hosted a virtual event where it showcased its 10nm SuperFin technology in order to represent the largest single internode enhancement ever done by the company and to deliver performance improvement compared to a full-node transition.  In addition to this, the company has also revealed details related to its Willow Cove microarchitecture and the Tiger Lake system-on-chip architecture for mobile clients. To start with, the 10nm SuperFin Technology combines Intel’s enhanced FinFET transistors with a Super metal insulator metal capacitor. This tech brings improved epitaxial source/drain, improved gate process and additional gate pitch to enable greater performance by enhancing epitaxial growth of crystal structures on the source and drain to increase strain while reducing resistance to allow more current through the channel. Also, it can improve the gate process to drive higher channel mobility, which enables charge carriers to move more quickly—at the same time, providing an extra gate pitch option for higher drive current in certain chip functions that require the utmost performance. This uses a novel thin barrier to reduce resistance by 30% and enhance interconnect performance. In addition to this, the 10nm SuperFin technology can deliver a 5x increase in capacitance within the same footprint when compared to industry standard, driving a voltage droop reduction that translates to dramatically improved product performance.  However, the company’s upcoming mobile processor, code-named Tiger Lake, is based on 10nm SuperFin technology and at the moment is in the pipeline and is expected to be shipped during the US holiday season this year. Whereas the Willow Cove is Intel’s upcoming CPU microarchitecture which is based on the latest process advancements, 10nm SuperFin technology and the foundation of the Sunny Cove architecture. Intel’s next-generation CPU microarchitecture is capable of providing a generational increase in CPU performance with large frequency improvements and increased power efficiency with redesigned caching architecture to a larger non-inclusive 1.25MB MLC and security enhancements with Intel Control-Flow Enforcement Technology. According to the company, Tiger Lake SoC architecture will be offering the new Willow Cove CPU core with significant frequency uplift leveraging 10nm SuperFin technology advancements. The latest Xe graphics with up to 96 execution units (EUs) with significant performance-per-watt efficiency improvements. For power management, the – autonomous dynamic voltage frequency scaling in coherent fabric, increased fully integrated voltage regulator efficiency. Fabrics and memory – 2x increase in coherent fabric bandwidth, ~86GB/s memory bandwidth, validated LP4x-4267, DDR4-3200; LP5-5400 architecture capability and Gaussian Network Accelerator (GNA) 2.0 dedicated IP for low-power neural inferencing offloading from the CPU. ~20% lower CPU utilisation on GNA vs CPU (running noise suppression workload). Along with the integration of TB4/USB4, integrated PCIe Gen 4 on CPU for low-latency, high-bandwidth device access to memory with a display of up to 64GB/s of isochronous bandwidth to memory for multiple high-resolution displays. In addition to six sensors with 4K30 video, 27MP image, up to 4K90 and 42MP image architectural capability. Although the company is refining its hybrid architecture with Alder Lake, the company’s next-generation client product together with two upcoming architectures: Golden Cove and Gracemont, optimised to offer great performance per watt.  During the Architecture 2020 event, the company has also detailed the Xe-LP (low power) microarchitecture. The company’s in-house GPU will come with up to 96 EUs and new architecture designs. These include asynchronous compute, view instancing, sampler feedback, updated media engine with AV1 and updated display engine to enable new end-user features with instant game tuning, capture, and stream-and-image sharpening. On software optimisation, Xe-LP will have driver improvements with a fresh DX11 path and optimized compiler.    Intel touts that its first Xe-HP chip is multi-tiled, highly scalable, high-performance architecture, providing data centre-class, rack-level media performance, GPU scalability and AI optimization.  The company is now sampling Xe-HP with key customers and plans to enable it in Intel DevCloud for developers. Xe-HP will be available next year. The company has also introduced a Xe microarchitecture variant. Over that the Xe-HPG and a gaming-optimized microarchitecture are also on the cards. These bring good performance-per-watt building blocks from Xe-LP, leveraging the scale from Xe-HP for a more significant configuration and compute frequency optimisation from Xe-HPC. A new memory subsystem based on GDDR6 is added to improve performance per dollar and XeHPG will have accelerated ray tracing support. Xe-HPG is expected to start shipping in 2021. For the data centres, the next-gen Xeon Scalable processor based on Ice Lake SP architecture is expected to be ship later this year bringing a set of technologies. This includes total memory encryption, PCIe Gen 4 and eight memory channels with instruction-set architecture to speed up crypto processing. While the Sapphire Rapids is Intel’s next-generation Xeon Scalable processor based on enhanced SuperFin technology will include DDR5, PCIe Gen 5 and Compute Express Link 1.1. Google Search to now help its users discover live games and TV shows or movies

0
Are you interested in watching live games? Google has introduced new features to Google Search in the US to help the users quickly find the live games they are looking for. The tech giant further revealed that when the game is over, Google Search will help its users discover live TV shows or movies that they may like too. “Now when you come to Search looking for your favourite team, you’ll see live TV options for MLB and NBA games (and we’ll be integrating more leagues in the future). Search for “where to watch the Clippers game” or “how to watch the A’s game,” on your phone and you’ll easily find information on how to tune in across a variety of services where the game may be available,” said Satyajeet Salgar, Group Product Manager, Search. Besides this, users can also find live TV options by searching for the individual team or game. A blog post by Google Search provided an example that if a user searches for “Dodgers game,” they’ll see all of the usual game-day features like live scores, top stories, and standings, but they’ll now see a new “Live on” button which shows the live TV options in the area they are located. The tech giant also added that this feature in Google Search currently includes a variety of cable and network channels and expand to more digital streaming options soon. “We also want to help you find other shows and movies that are on linear television. Last year, we added a new way to find TV shows and movie recommendations in Search so you can easily decide on what to watch next. Starting this week, we’re enhancing this feature by adding carousels of live content from cable and broadcast providers. These recommendations will show content on live TV so you can keep track of everything that’s available to you,” the Google blog post added. Furthermore, Google added that when a user searches for things like “what to watch” or “good shows to watch” on mobile, they will now have visibility into both streaming and live TV shows. “Our “On TV now” carousel shows you programming across multiple channels that are currently airing, while “On TV later” shows you recommendations for future programming. So when it’s Sunday night and you just can’t decide what to watch before the week begins, Search is here to help,” the tech giant added. Google is excited to keep adding more features to its Search in order to help the users make easier and better decisions on what to watch next. Stay tuned for more updates.
