How to live stream sports online at low or no cost

Watching live sports from around the world can be a costly affair. Especially if you’re subscribed to one of the many expensive satellite TV packages. Fortunately, it doesn’t have to be that way – there are ways to enjoy your favourite live sporting events at a very low cost – sometimes even for free!

In this article, we will explore some of the venues that you can use to watch live sports without paying an arm and a leg. You will find several good options – from betting sites to big brand broadcasters – so make sure you read this article to the end to learn about the best options for you.

Low-Cost Sports Live Streaming

Since the arrival of the internet, the monopoly of satellite TV providers has been challenged by better and cheaper online options.

While satellite TV has become more expensive and the quality of their selection has dwindled, online live streaming services have flourished. The best thing about online sports streaming platforms is that you don’t have to commit to yearlong subscription models that will cost you hundreds of dollars.

You can be on for one month and unsubscribe the next month. It’s highly convenient and cost-efficient for the user.

So what are the best low-cost live streaming options on the market?

Well, the answer is not as clear as you might have hoped. It really depends on the type of sports you want to live stream.

If American sports is what you’re looking for ESPN is probably the best option for you. You can access their live streaming service called ESPN Player at just $13.99 per month.

If you’re more into football and other sports from around the world, Laola1 may be the option you’re looking for: this Austrian-based streaming platform offers tons of European soccer and plenty of other events.

The pricing model is competitive and comes in at just €4.99 per month.

Free Sports Live Streaming

There are very few sports live streaming sites that are both free and legal to use.

After all, if a live streaming site is free to use, how do they make money? Usually, they make money by displaying ads or even by selling your data to a third party. There are thousands of illegal sports live streaming sites floating around on the web.It goes without saying that we do not recommend using illegal live streaming sites like that.

If you land on an illegal sports live streaming site, we recommend that you leave the site immediately.

So how does one find a legal and free live streaming service?

One of our favourite free and legal streaming options is to use an online betting site. A betting site, you ask – how does one stream live sport for free on a betting site?

Some betting sites such as Bet365 and 1xBet offer FREE sports live streaming to all their active players. The only requirement is that you deposit some money into your betting account.

The amount you deposit is not a payment per se, and you can withdraw it again at any time when you’re done using the streaming service. On betting sites with live streaming such as Bet365 you can watch more than 200,000 sporting events each year. That’s an average of almost 550 sporting events per day.

Events range from major football tournaments such as the Champions League to tennis, golf, cricket, badminton and many other sports from around the world.

And all of this sports live streaming can be accessed at absolutely zero cost. What’s not to like about that?

Samsung captures top spot in India’s Premium Smartphone Segment in H1 2020: CMR

0

Despite the critical challenges owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, India’s smartphone shipments in the premium segment (>₹25,000) grew 18 percent YoY in H1 2020. A CMR report has revealed that Samsung secured the top spot in the premium smartphone segment with 37 percent market share, followed by Apple with 26 percent share and OnePlus at a distant third with 15 percent share.

“Owing to the pandemic, H1 2020 was a tough period for the overall smartphone industry in general, with multiple challenges. However, the premium smartphone segment was one of the least affected segments. In fact, the segment grew owing to strong consumer demand and good supply-side dynamics,” said to Anand Priya Singh, Analyst – Industry Intelligence Group (IIG), CMR.

Samsung led the premium smartphone market, with 37 percent market share majorly to its success of Galaxy A71 and A51 which contributed 38 percent and 13 percent respectively of its shipments, and a YoY growth of 56 percent. This was made possible through good supply side dynamics, attractive discounts and smart channel strategies. Samsung also started manufacturing its flagship Galaxy S20 series in India during this quarter.

On the other hand, Apple grew by 14 percent YoY and with a 26 percent market share. The iPhone 11 continued to garner some good market response in the initial part of the year. On the other hand, the all-new iPhone SE 2020 is on track to repeat the exceptional performance of iPhone 11. It captured 8 percent market share of the total premium smartphones shipped during Q2.

Besides Samsung and Apple, OnePlus was placed third with 15 percent market share, with the newly launched OnePlus 8 contributing to a majority of its shipments.

According to CMR report, In H1 2020, the first wave of 5G smartphones debuted in the premium smartphone segment.  Many new OEMs made some strategic moves into the premium segment, including the likes of Xiaomi, Vivo, realme, OPPO and Motorola.

Stating that consumer demand in the premium smartphone segment continued to remain high, and, in fact, fuelled the market growth in H1 2020, Amit Sharma, Analyst – Industry Intelligence Group (IIG), CMR, said, “This bodes well for H2 2020, and, especially, in the run-up to the all-important festive season. Beyond the incumbents – including Samsung and Apple, aspirational premium brands will seek to make in-roads into the premium segment.”

The Premium Smartphone segment (Rs 25,000 – Rs 50,000) is a niche, but hyper-competitive segment, where more OEMs, including the likes of OPPO and Xiaomi are currently competing for greater mind share, and brand share. This segment accounted for 5 percent of the total smartphone shipments in H1 2020.  Samsung Galaxy A71 was the star in this segment, contributing to 19 percent in this segment.

Moreover, CMR report revealed that the Super Premium Smartphone segment (Rs 50,000 – Rs 1, 00,000) saw Apple on top with 56 percent market share, while Samsung was placed second with 34 percent, and OnePlus at third position with 4 percent market share. The Apple iPhone 11 contributed to be the bestseller here, accounting for 39 percent of the shipments. This segment accounted for ~2 percent of the total smartphone shipments in H1 2020.

During the H1 2020, the Uber Premium Smartphone segment (Rs 1,00,000 and above) saw Apple with 67 percent market share, while Samsung was placed a distant second with 30 percent market share. Apple iPhone 11 Pro Max contributed to around 40 percent of the shipments in this segment. During the upcoming festive season, India’s premium smartphone segment is potentially slated to grow 20 percent YoY in H2 2020, with many new device offerings anticipated from various OEMs. Indian consumers will stand to benefit from the intense competition and offerings across online and offline channels. Samsung and Apple will be in a dead heat in H2 2020 and potentially slated to garner 28-29 percent market share each. Beyond the incumbents, the new premium segment aspirants, including the likes of Xiaomi and OPPO will seek to shake the turf.

Oppo A12 Review: A stylish performer

Oppo A12 is the China-based company’s budget smartphone that has been launched in India recently. The smartphone falls under the Rs 10,000 price segment. We spent some time with it and today we are here with the review of this smartphone. Let’s get to know how it stands against other devices in the market, as there are a variety of handsets being offered by some major brands in the country in this segment. If you are also looking to replace your old mobile phone, but your budget is low or are confuses, which one should you go for then read our Oppo A12 review and decide.

Design and Display

Design is the foremost and most important aspect of any smartphone. It is as important as the gadgets’ specifications and features. Half of the battle is won if the manufactures manage to fascinate the buyers with its innovative design as everyone wants a good-looking phone. On unboxing, you get Oppo A12 donning a beautiful diamond-cut textured surface. And yes, this design makes it unique from what is being offered by other brands in the market.

Oppo A12 Review

Though the rear panel is made up of plastic, still it looks premium and you cannot stop ogling over it. The best part about the textured finish is that it makes it less slippery, smudge and fingerprints free. There is a horizontally placed dual rear camera module with an LED flash. The fingerprint sensor has been set just above the Oppo’s branding. Oppo A12 is being offered in two colour options. The review unit we received is the Black version, but you can also go for the Blue variant if you want a more vibrant colour.

Interestingly, the front of this mobile is similar to the ones we have seen on Samsung’s smartphones. Here also, you get a simple dewdrop style display. Though it has slim bezels but there is a fat chin. On the left side of the phone, there is a SIM tray and volume rocker button while the power button sits on the right side of the phone. At the bottom, there is a speaker grille, a Type-C port and an audio jack. Even though there is a 4,320 mAh battery inside this mobile, Oppo A12 is still light in weight thanks to the plastic body.

Oppo A12 Review

For some, the display might seem smaller but it fits very well in the hands. You get a 6.22-inch IPS LCD panel with an 89 percent screen-to-body ratio running 720×1,520 pixels of resolution. The display offers 450 nits of peak brightness and is protected by a layer of Corning Gorilla Glass 3.

The display panel is bright when indoors, but its performance under bright sunlight is not satisfactory. The colours just wash out. When it comes to watching movies, shows or playing games on it, it did not fail. The device comes with Night Shield so that your eyes don’t strain when used during low lighting conditions. On the flip side, there is no Widevine L1 DRM so you cannot enjoy HD streaming on Netflix or Amazon Prime Video. Bear in mind, in this price the display is good.

Performance and Camera

Oppo A12 is powered by octa-core MediaTek Helio P35 chipset, which is equal to Snapdragon 665. This is available in multiple memory storage combinations of 3GB+32GB and 4GB+64GB. The memory can be expanded up to 256GB using a microSD card.  If you are going to play heavy games such as PUBG or Call of Duty and others then you should better think of getting a phone with a better GPU. Though you can run these games on low to medium graphics settings, it does get heated up after prolonged gaming sessions.

Here are the benchmark results of the phone, which we took to check the performance of Oppo A12:

Geekbench 5 CPU

Single-Core Score: 166

Multi-Core Score- 895

Oppo A12 was good at multitasking and handles day to day tasks easily. The device runs on ColorOS 6.1 skinned on top of Android 9 Pie out of the box. It comes with a lot of unwanted apps, which we hardly ever use. But these can be later removed from the phone by uninstalling them. Switching between the apps is smooth, however, the phone seemed to be a bit slow or less responsive when scrolling for apps or checking out Instagram or Facebook feeds. This might be due to a lower refresh rate screen. Also, we were advertisements are part of the package. That pop up now and then while using the phone and can be a nuisance. As soon as you turn on the data connection or Wi-Fi the ads come pouring in.

Oppo A12 Review

Next, we tested the performance of the camera and before we begin, we would like to state that Oppo A12 comes with a dual rear camera set up that includes a 13-megapixel primary sensor with f/2.2 aperture and a 2-megapixel depth sensor. On the front, there is a 5-megapixel selfie camera with f/2.4 aperture.

We need to point one thing out here, while others are offering a 48-megapixel camera sensor in this segment you get a 13-megapixel main sensor on the Oppo A12.

Oppo A12

OVer that, the camera app misses out on some of the important features and modes such a wide-angle, telephoto and macro lens. It cannot even record slow-mo and 4K videos. The camera app is standard and it only has a portrait option with few more camera modes such as Panorama, Expert, Time-Lapse and Sticker.

The primary sensor is supported by 6x zoom while the depth sensor uses AI, which automatically enhances and beautifies the portrait images.

But here is the kicker, the primary sensor surprised us with its high-quality images. The images stood stunning while maintaining perfect colours, contrast and details. Pictures shot in good daylighting are clear with good level contrast and colour exposure. While the low light images were also fine with less visible grains and noise effect.

On the other side, the selfie camera is also good. Selfies are clear with no over beautification. The images turned out natural with real colours so you get natural-looking selfies that Oppo A12 can offer in this price range.

As we said earlier the phone cannot record 4K videos. A video can be recorded here at Full HD resolution at 30FPS. The video recorded lacks stability otherwise is fine. We would have wanted 60FPS for smoother-looking videos.

The unlocking of the mobile has been made easy with a fingerprint scanner on the back along with face unlock system. We felt that the rear fingerprint sensor is comparatively quick to unlock the smartphone than the face unlock feature.

On the battery front, A12 is backed by a 4,230 mAh battery that is bundled with a standard 10W charger. The battery runs long thanks to the smaller screen, which automatically turns down the power consumption when needed. For us, the battery lasted for a day and a half. But if you watch a lot of movies or are into gaming, browsing the internet and YouTube then the phone can run for a full day.

Verdict

The features and the performance of Oppo A12 do justice to the price under Rs 10,000 category. However, bear in mind the competitors are offering a bigger, better display with higher MP cameras and the latest Android 10 OS. Nonetheless, for those looking for a stylish smartphone in this price range, this smartphone is recommended.

Pros:

Looks premium

Lightweight

Good battery life

Cons:

Runs Android 9

Cameras could have been better

Now an algorithm could detect Twitter abuse of women

0

With the increasing proliferation of online abuse or sexual violence targeting women, the latest study published by Springer Nature has reported that Queensland University of Technology (QUT) researchers have developed a sophisticated and accurate algorithm to detect these posts on Twitter and help drum it out of the Twittersphere.

The team, including Associate Professor Richi Nayak, Professor Nicolas Suzor and research fellow Dr Md Abul Bashar, is a collaboration between QUT’s faculties of Science and Engineering and Law and the Digital Media Research Centre. It mined a dataset of 1 million tweets then refined these by searching for those containing one of three abusive keywords – whore, slut, and rape.

“At the moment, the onus is on the user to report the abuse they receive. We hope our machine-learning solution can be adopted by social media platforms to automatically identify and report this content to protect women and other user groups online. The key challenge in misogynistic tweet detection is understanding the context of a tweet. The complex and noisy nature of tweets makes it difficult,” said Professor Nayak.

Asserting that teaching a machine to understand natural language is one of the more complicated ends of data science, Nayak added, “We developed a text mining system where the algorithm learns the language as it goes, first by developing a base-level understanding then augmenting that knowledge with both tweet-specific and abusive language.”

The team implemented a deep learning algorithm called Long Short-Term Memory with Transfer Learning, which means that the machine could look back at its previous understanding of terminology and change the model as it goes, learning and developing its contextual and semantic understanding over time.

While the system started with a base dictionary and built its vocabulary from there, context and intent had to be carefully monitored by the research team to ensure that the algorithm could differentiate between abuse, sarcasm and friendly use of aggressive terminology.

“Take the phrase ‘get back to the kitchen’ as an example–devoid of context of structural inequality, a machine’s literal interpretation could miss the misogynistic meaning. But seen with the understanding of what constitutes abusive or misogynistic language, it can be identified as a misogynistic tweet,” said Professor Nayak.

The research team’s model identifies misogynistic content with 75 percent accuracy, outperforming other methods that investigate similar aspects of social media language. Other methods based on word distribution or occurrence patterns identify abusive or misogynistic terminology, but the presence of a word by itself doesn’t necessarily correlate with intent.

Once the team had refined the 1 million tweets to 5000, those tweets were then categorised as misogynistic or not based on context and intent, and were input to the machine learning classifier, which used these labelled samples to begin to build its classification model.

The QUT team further added that there’s no shortage of misogynistic data out there to work with, but labelling the data was quite labour-intensive. Professor Nayak and the team hoped the research could translate into platform-level policy that would see Twitter, for example, remove any tweets identified by the algorithm as misogynistic.

According to the researchers, this modelling could also be expanded upon and used in other contexts in the future, such as identifying racism, homophobia, or abuse toward people with disabilities. The researchers further added that the end goal is to take the model to social media platforms and trial it in place. If the researchers can make identifying and removing this content easier, that can help create a safer online space for all users.

Technology is changing the way New Zealanders interact with sports

Sport and technology are not things that most people immediately associate with each other but there are several reasons why technology and the gadgets, apps and websites sports fans use are changing the way people interact with sports forever. One place where this is especially true is in New Zealand.

Sports Websites in New Zealand

In New Zealand, over 70% of residents over the age of 15 have gambled or bet, and most of this betting is done online with sports betting websites. These sports websites are hugely popular in New Zealand with total gambling and betting expenditure reaching over $2.4 billion New Zealand dollars between 2017 and 2018.

New Zealand currently has only one domestic operator that is allowed to offer sports betting from within New Zealand – the TAB NZ.

However, right now the outdated New Zealand Gambling Act doesn’t restrict Kiwis’ use of international betting websites, which has led to many Kiwis betting offshore with operators who offer better sports odds, more generous bonuses and top-notch betting apps.

The rise in popularity of online bookmakers has led the New Zealand government to begin a review of New Zealand’s current betting and gambling laws.

Sports Apps in New Zealand

Sports betting apps offer New Zealanders the opportunity to take their sports bets on the go.

With free apps that can be downloaded from the Apple Store or directly from bookmakers’ websites, betting companies are making the mobile betting experience as painless as possible for Kiwis.

Many of these apps have a variety of features like live betting, live statistics, build your bet options and secure payments which often makes betting apps even better than their desktop alternatives.

The popularity of betting apps has meant that some newer sportsbooks have created their whole company on a ‘mobile-first’ approach.

LeoVegas NZ is a prime example of this as they offer Kiwis a diverse range of sports markets and over 1100 casino games from their betting site that is optimized for mobile.

Live Streaming of Sports

Some of the top European betting companies that cater to New Zealand bettors also offer live streaming capabilities.

This means that New Zealanders no longer have to buy local sports streaming subscriptions and can instead watch high-quality football, rugby, tennis and other sports from their desktop computers or smartphones.

Bet365 and Betway are two of the top bookies for live streaming that are available in New Zealand. To access live streaming features, users just need to create a betting account and have funds in their e-wallet.

Virtual Reality and Sports

Some betting sites also offer the opportunity to view fantasy matches through VR headsets.

It is unproven whether this technology will catch on in New Zealand, and around the world, but for bettors who are looking for something extra, this is still a huge drawcard.

Summary

The popularity of sports betting sites and apps is growing faster than it ever has before and this growth is especially apparent in New Zealand where sports betting used to be dominated by local tabs for so long.

With the invention of the internet and widespread adoption of smartphones into our daily lives, technology has and will undoubtedly continue to shape the way fans interact with sports.

eSports and online gaming continue to boom in Japan amid COVID-19

Despite the Coronavirus Pandemic which has greatly affected many industries in the world, esports and the gaming industry have been exceptionally resilient. While live sports were absent in the midst of the pandemic, global consumers quickly turned to esports and online gaming for entertainment accessible from home. Japanese people were no exception to this global trend.

Earlier this year, the Japanese government announced a plan aimed at driving the domestic esports industry with an expected annual benefit of $2.6 billion (USD) by 2025. In the second quarter, PlayBrain reportedly raised fresh $6 million funds to grow esports in Japan.

Japan is fast catching up in esports regardless of having been a latecomer in comparison to its Asian neighbours such as China and South Korea. The esports revenue in the country was over $56 million in 2019 and the growth forecast is more than double, $141 million by 2024.

The pandemic further heightened the public interest in esports, taking the spotlight in Japanese media as the current corona situation continues.

Meanwhile, Japanese public gambling is thriving as well regardless of a drop in domestic household consumption caused by COVID-19. In the practice of social distancing, Japanese gamblers swiftly shifted to wager on horses and powerboats online.

Gambling in Japan has been a multi-billion dollar industry. On top of Japan’s love for Pachinko, Japanese obsession with horse racing is unstoppable, boasting revenues of $27 billion in 2019 with a steady increase over the past five consecutive years.

What is more, it’s not only the nation’s public gambling that is experiencing a boost, but foreign-owned iGaming operators are taking shares of the giant Japan market. An increasing number of offshore betting sites are attracting Japanese players to wager on a wide range of sports from J-League to Sumo.

Needless to say, the growth of esports and online betting go hand in hand. The Corona pandemic has ushered in dramatic growth and opportunities in online betting as well. Without live sports to bet on, the spike in demand for esports betting became evident.

As a matter of fact, esports betting operator, Luckbox benefited from the 500% surge in esports betting during the peak of Corona lockdown. In May, the company successfully raised $2.8 million in preparation for a listing on the Toronto Venture Exchange. Many of the sports betting providers such as DraftKings and bet365 have quickly enhanced their offerings in the esports market.

Looking at esports and online gaming scenes worldwide, these industries have been steadily evolving and shown astounding growth in recent years. The combination of increased home time and social distancing due to COVID-19 is likely to continue to drive higher demand for gaming leisure. Both esports and the online gaming industry are presented with fresh opportunities to boost their businesses in Japan, as the trend of growing interest in both sectors looks to continue to grow in the near future.

The company has announced its next foldable phone earlier this month at the Unpacked 2020 but now it will be hosting Unpacked Part 2 virtual event to officially launch the device. Ahead of the launch out of the blue the company accidentally shared the pricing of Galaxy Z Fold 2 online.

At the Samsung Galaxy Unpacked event the company introduced Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 but it did now reveal the price of the device. But before it could officially launch the device it by mistake let the price of the Tablet slip on its UK website. The price of the Fold 2 has been set at £1,799 that translates to Rs 1,75,400 which is more expensive than its predecessor Galaxy Fold. Later on, the pricing was removed after the price was spotted by some of the journalists. And without any further delay, one of the publishers also took a screenshot.

Though this might also be a publicity stunt as in the past many of the brands have done this to promote its product. While the official pricing will be revealed on Tuesday that is September 1. The company will be hosting a formal launch event for its upcoming device where it is likely to share the price officially. The event will start at 10 am ET (7.30 pm IST).

Meanwhile, the foldable phone is available for reservations in the US and will be offered in Mystic Black and Mystic Bronze colours. The company has also collaborated with the New York fashion house Thom Browne to make available the limited Galaxy Z Fold 2 Thom Browne Edition.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 specifications

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 will be featuring a 7.6-inch Infinity-O Display that is the main screen similarly the cover screen is a 6.2-inch Infinity-O Display. That is an upgrade over its predecessor. The Samsung Galaxy Fold has a 7.3-inch primary display and a 4.6-inch cover display.

The company claims that the upcoming model brings the most unconventional flexible display. For this, the company has used Ultra-Thin Glass (UTG) which comes on the Z Flip protection over a plastic covering addressing the issue which made the company delay the shipment of its first-generation Galaxy Fold model.

The Galaxy Z Fold 2 will be carrying a 120Hz refresh rate panel for a smoother experience than Fold which offers a standard 60Hz refresh rate.

While the hinges have been re-engineered and are similar to the Z Flip which has a CAM Mechanism allowing it to open it up at multiple angles which is not present on the existing model.

The camera department has been taken care of by a triple camera setup at the back whereas the displays also include sensors for taking selfies. The camera details are yet to be known.

In addition to this, it is backed up by a 4,500mAh Dual Intelligent Battery. While the foldable is further supported by Dolby Atmos and 5G.
