Here’s why CEO Mark Zuckerberg has ordered Facebook executives to use Android phones

0
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has reportedly told his management team to only use Android smartphones, considering that the operating system has more users than iOS. According to a report in The New York Times, Facebook CEO ordered this only after Apple CEO Tim Cook criticized the social networking giant in an interview with MSNBC. To recall, Cook had said the Facebook is a service that traffics “in your personal life.” In March, Apple CEO Tim Cook was also questioned about how he would deal with the fallout from the Cambridge Analytica scandal had he been in Mark Zuckerberg’s place. Cook simply dismissed the question by saying, “I wouldn’t be in this situation.” Zuckerberg did not ignore what Cook said and in an interview with Recode, he said that said that comments made by Apple CEO were “extremely glib”. He went on to say, “I think it’s important that we don’t all get Stockholm syndrome and let the companies that work hard to charge you more convince you that they actually care more about you. Because that sounds ridiculous to me.” However, till now there is no clarity on whether the decision for Facebook employees to use on Android smartphones came after Cook’s comments or if it’s a rule that existed earlier. But considering that Android is the most dominant operating system in a number of regions including South America, Europe, Russia, South Asia, and parts of the Middle East, it does sound like a reasonable business decision. Also, Facebook is not the only company which follows this. Even Snap strongly encourages its employees to use Android smartphones instead of iPhones. Android and iOS are two very different operating systems and one needs to work differently in order to make apps for two. The reason why tech workers are asked to use Android is because companies want to focus on the operating system that is most used in the world. However, it is possible that Facebook employees have switched to Android smartphones for work and those who have a preference for iOS devices are continuing to use iPhones in personal lives.

Samsung Galaxy S10 to sport Infinity-O display, ‘punch-hole’ selfie camera: Report

Samsung Galaxy S10’s launch may be months away. But that doesn’t stop speculations and reports about the upcoming device from surfacing online. And the latest leak about Samsung Galaxy S10 comes from tipster Evan Blass. According to the renowned leakster who managed to obtain some details about the upcoming flagship smartphone, Samsung Galaxy S10 will come with a ‘punch hole’ selfie camera, which sounds like the Infinity-O display that the technology giant spoke about at its developer conference last week. Besides Infinity-O display, Samsung had also spoken about its Infinity U and Infinity V notch styles. https://twitter.com/evleaks/status/1062313739842654208 The smartphone will sport an ultrasonic in-display fingerprint scanner and come with three cameras. Apart from the primary sensor, the device will come with wide-angle and telephoto lenses. The new flagship device will reportedly run Android 9.0 Pie skinned with Samsung’s latest One UI and will pack a more powerful Exynos chip. Samsung’s revamped user interface will also be coming to its current flagships – Samsung Galaxy S9, Galaxy S9+ and Galaxy Note 9. According to previous reports, Samsung Galaxy S10 will not come with an iris scanner. Instead, it is opting for an ultrasonic in-display fingerprint sensor like we mentioned earlier. It has also been reported that Samsung plans to dedicate 30% of Galaxy S10’s screen to the fingerprint sensor. This basically means that the user will be able to unlock the device by placing his finger anywhere on that area of the display. This, according to us, is definitely a plus and we are looking forward to it. The smartphone will compete with the likes of Apple’s current flagship – iPhone XS Max – and Huawei Mate 20 Pro. It has been said that Samsung is planning three smartphones in the Galaxy S10 lineup instead of the usual two. Reports have also suggested that Samsung’s smartphone will make a debut at the Mobile World Congress 2019 which will be held in Barcelona, Spain. Samsung’s foldable smartphone, which the company showcased at its developer conference last week, will reportedly be launched along with the upcoming Galaxy S10 smartphones. What we saw last week was only a prototype and Samsung is said to be still working on it.

Google Pixel 3, Pixel 3 XL are erasing text messages without warning: Report

Google unveiled its flagship devices Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL to the world last month. And just a few weeks back, the smartphones went on sale in India. However, early buyers have been facing some issues with the devices. While previously there were reports about overheating and audio quality, a new report has surfaced online which claims that users are facing a problem with text messages on their device. According to the report, all the text messages of Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL users are getting erased on their own from the Messages app. The issue seems to have cropped up after the devices received the November security patch or after a new update to the Messages app. Although the technology giant has acknowledged the issue, it doesn’t have a fix for it yet. This issue was first reported by Android Police after it was discussed on several Reddit threads. Users have claimed on Reddit that the entire data on their Messages app was deleted and they didn’t have any prior warning about it. Furthermore, the messages that have disappeared have not even been archived. They have been deleted. Users who did have a backup of their messages on their old Pixel phones do have access to some old messages, but there is no way of tracing the new ones. A user on Reddit has suggested that one can get the lost data back by going back to the previous version of Messages app. What’s more, other users have agreed that it works, which means that the bug could be a part of the latest Messages app update. A number of users have tried to contact Google regarding the matter and the technology giant’s support team has said that engineers are working to fix the issue. Till now, they haven’t been able to find a solution. If you are facing this issue too, and want to go back to the previous version of the Messages app, head to Messages section under Apps & Notifications in Settings of your smartphone. From the App Info page, click on the Menu button and select Uninstall updates.

Why Xiaomi had to apologize because of its flash sale

Customers in United Kingdom are not very happy with Xiaomi. The Chinese smartphone brand made its foray in the country earlier this month with its Mi 8 Pro and Redmi 6 smartphones and its Mi Band Pro. And recently, the company announced its popular flash sale under the name of ‘Crazy Deal.’ Under the ‘Crazy Deal’ flash sale, Xiaomi was offering a few of its smartphones at a price of GBP 1. Xiaomi has also held such sales in Indian smartphone market during the festive season, where a few of its devices are available at Re 1. But, in the UK, the sale left the customers miffed. Much like what Xiaomi does in its Re 1 flash sales in India, the company made only 10 units of its Android smartphones available at GBP 1. As a result of this, the units were sold out within seconds of the sale beginning, just like it happens in India. However, customers in the United Kingdom associate ‘Flash Sale’ with something that has more than 10 units on discount. And this was what created a furore. Xiaomi tweeted an apology saying, “We can confirm that 10 customers have purchased a Xiaomi device for GBP 1. Of the thousands who clicked ‘buy’ simultaneously, our system randomly selected the winners, and he or she should have been able to add this item to the shopping cart and pay for this handset at GBP 1. No changes to the T&C were made that impacted the promotion itself in any way.” The company further added, “@XiaomiUK would like to apologise for any misunderstanding.” According to a report in BBC, the ads watchdog in the UK has received a complaint and is thinking over whether an investigation is required or not. The report says that the Xiaomi did not mention on the sales page that only a limited number of unit are being sold in the ‘flash sale’. Instead one could only find this information in a different landing page which detailed terms and conditions. It is also worth noticing that the link for this page was in the footer of the website. A Twitter user has alleged that the script of the website shows that the ‘Buy Now’ button on the products that were meant to be on sale was set to automatically switch to ‘Out of Stock’ and it did not check for stock limits when the timer went off. Xiaomi is also said to have held a similar sale in Spain last year and it offered a total of 50 units at EUR 1. Image courtesy: Reuters

Asus Zenfone Max M1 review: Buy it for the battery

Asus recently launched its Zenfone Max M1 smartphone. Although it is priced at Rs 8,999, as a part of an introductory offer, it of available at Rs 7,499. Asus did make its mark in the mid-range segment with Zenfone 5Z this year, but will it be able to do the same in the entry-level segment? We spent a few days with the Asus Zenfone Max M1 mobile to find out. Read the rest of our review to know more about this budget smartphone:

Asus Zenfone Max M1 Design and Display

When you look at the Asus Zenfone Max M1, you would certainly be reminded of the Zenfone Max Pro M1. Not that they are identical in design, but it’s very evident at the first look itself that they belong to the same family. Asus Zenfone Max M1 has a plastic body and comes in Black and Gold colour variants. The one that we got for review was dressed in Gold. Asus Zenfone Max In spite of the fact that the smartphone has a 5.45-inch display, it was easy to operate and we were surprised at how light-weight the device really is. Even though the smartphone has been touted to have a big battery at an affordable price point, Asus managed to keep the weight of the Zenfone Max M1 at just 150g. Some might say, its build quality is just average. But then, at this price point, it’s okay. The front of the smartphone houses the display, the selfie camera, the ear piece and the proximity sensor. On flipping over, you will see the primary camera coupled with LED flash, the fingerprint scanner and the Asus branding right below it. The left edge houses the SIM tray and the right side has the power and volume rocker buttons. You can plug in your earphones via a 3.5mm headphone jack located at the top and charge your phone using the microUSB port that is placed at the bottom. The bottom edge also has the speaker grilles. zenfone max m1 Coming to the display of the device, like we said, it sports a 5.45-inch HD+ IPS display that comes with an 800:1 contrast ratio. The borders around the display are quite broad, which is expected in the sub-10K budget smartphone sector. The colours that it showcased were accurate and vibrant, and the screen was bright. We were mostly happy with the display of Asus Zenfone Max M1. The viewing angles were also decent. However, the sunlight readability of the device could have been better. In a nutshell, we really liked the design of the Asus Zenfone Max M1. The biggest plus points of its design are that it is light weight and one-handed usage is a cakewalk. The display of the smartphone is decent too. But we really wish the sunlight readability can be taken up in one of the coming updates.

Asus Zenfone Max M1 performance

Let’s take a look at the rest of the specifications of Asus Zenfone Max M1. The smartphone is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 processor clubbed with 3GB RAM and offers 32GB of internal storage. For more storage, you can install a microSD card of up to 256GB. The smartphone houses a 4,000mAh battery and runs Android Oreo skinned with the company’s own ZenUI. For connectivity, there is Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi, GPS, and GLONASS. Although there is a dual SIM card slot, only one of the two SIM cards will be able to connect with 4G at a time. Asus Zenfone Max 2 Since the operating system used in the phone is customized, Asus Zenfone Max M1 has its own icons and comes with pre-installed apps like Instagram, Facebook, Facebook Messenger, Mobile Manager, Weather, Sound Recorder, File Manager and Themes. The usual suite of Google apps is also present on the device. The device did take more time than usual smartphones for its initial setup. However, there was no other lag in launching apps and switching between them. We didn’t face a lag even when we worked on multiple tabs of Chrome. Pretty neat on offer at this price point. The device comes with Face Unlock as well as a fingerprint scanner, and in our time with the phone, both worked well. The Face Unlock even worked in dimly lit conditions, which we think is a plus. Asus Zenfone Max 3 In the benchmark tests, the device managed to score 57,983 in Antutu and 665 and 2,478 in single and multi-core scores of Geekbench. Which put it at part with the competition or half a step behind. However, other features like sound equalizer et al make up for it. What we really love is the battery life of the smartphone. With usage that involved watching YouTube videos, navigation with Google Maps, and a lot of long phone calls, we still had around 50% juice remaining at the end of the day. And a good battery life is always a big plus in our books. There are also some modes that will help you enhance the battery for it to last even longer. The call quality of the smartphone was good. We faced no problem regarding reception even in areas like basements. Now let’s talk about the cameras. The 13MP primary camera comes with a f/2.0 aperture and PDAF. For selfies and video calls, there is an 8MP shooter up front with a f/2.2 aperture. The camera app of the phone comes with Beautify, Panorama, HDR, Portrait and Time Lapse modes. Image from Asus Zenfone Max M1 The photos that we took during the day or in well-lit conditions were better than average. One would need to download and see them on a display, since the smartphones screen pixel ratio does not do justice to it. We did face a case or two where the images were not very sharp and lacked details. We overcame that by enabling the HDR mode, which does help a lot. The colours remained accurate in all photos. As for the low-lit shots, we do recommend to use noise reduction. On the other hand, we were expecting great results from the selfie camera as we got from the rear one. Though the company has come a long optimising the front camera, we were able to extract only average selfies.

Verdict

To conclude, we would say that at a price of Rs 8,999, the smartphone is a good buy. It comes with a good design, has an amazing battery life and an overall smooth performance. The battery, in fact, is the best aspect of the smartphone. The cameras could be better. Pros – Beautiful design, lasting battery, Smooth performance, Quick Face Unlock Cons – Front camera, sunlight readability

9 signs that your smartphone may be tapped

Have you ever worried that your personal and business communication is not private? Do you have a consistent feeling that your smartphone has been tapped by someone? The sad truth is that not all systems are as secure as they seem and your device immediately becomes more vulnerable to being tapped the moment you root it or jail-break it, to download third party apps that are not available on the official app store. There are a few signs to look out for to know if you actually have a reason to worry:

You hear unusual background sounds on your phone

Smartphone 1 Watch out for any kind of a background noise when you are on talking to someone on your phone. If you hear strange background noises or pulsating static, high-pitched humming it may be a sign of your smartphone being tapped. However, strange noises can also happen because of other reasons, so it’s not a sure-shot indicator that your phone is indeed tapped. But then, if your phone makes strange sounds even when it is not being used, it is a stronger sign that it has been tapped. You can also use a sound-bandwidth sensor on a low frequency to check for any inaudible sounds. If it detects sounds several times in one minute, it is a sign that your smartphone may be tapped.

Your smartphone’s battery suddenly doesn’t last long

Smartphone battery If your usage of your device is unchanged and still your smartphone’s battery keeps running out sooner than it earlier did, it may be because it is tapped. And by sooner, we mean your phone consistently being low on charge in spite of being charged again and again. But before you jump to any conclusions, check on your device what is it that is using up the battery. Whether you own an iPhone or an Android smartphone, you can see which apps are consuming the most battery in the Settings section. If you find nothing unusual there and your usage seems to be the same as before, you should dig in further to find out if your phone is tapped.

Your smartphone’s battery gets warmed up too quickly

Smartphone 2 Another stronger sign is your phone’s battery getting warmed up even when your device is not in use. This is because this points towards the presence of an uninvited software on your smartphone. And there are softwares available that let someone else listen to your conversations. Although high temperature of the smartphone clubbed with low power if often a sign to look out for, but check for other reasons for this happening before you panic over it.

You have difficulty shutting down your smartphone

Smartphone off If you feel that your smartphone has suddenly become unresponsive or you face difficulty shutting it down, it can point towards someone else having unauthorized access to it. The matter need immediate attention if you try to shut your phone down, but it fails to happen or a back-light stays on even after shutdown process has been completed. However, if you have recently installed an update in your phone, then that may be the reason behind it.

Look out for suspicious SMS messages on your smartphone

Smartphone text Sometimes, we ignore some activity on our phone that may actually be a sign of it being hacked. For instance, an app beginning to install on your phone on its own after your reboot it, weird SMS text messages from unknown senders and strange pop-up advertisements. In fact, weird text messages from unknown senders is a strong sign to watch out for as there are tapping apps which receive commands via coded SMS messages. If your family and friends also say that they have received weird messages from your phone, it means that your smartphone is infected and is trying to spread malware to other phones too.

Check for electronic interference when your phone is off

Smartphone laptop Electronic interference is hardly anything new. But it should only happen if you are on a phone call. If you are not using your phone and it still happens, then that is not normal. You can easily check this by placing your phone close to another electronic device like your laptop or television. If you hear any unusual sound, it can be a sign that someone is listening to your calls.

Your phone bill increases because of data usage…except you didn’t use any

money Did your phone bill go up dramatically? And is data responsible for it although your usage remains unchanged? A reason behind this can be presence of spyware or other malicious apps on your phone. These apps secretly use up a lot of data, so there is a high chance you will see a dramatic jump in your mobile bill. However, do check for other reasons before you conclude. You don’t want to panic only because your child inadvertently activated the hotspot on your device.

You have apps on your phone that you didn’t install

App icons Do look out for the apps you have on your device. We often download apps to try and at times, forget all about them. This leads to the presence of so many apps on our device, that there can be a possibility of missing out any apps that we didn’t install. Check your phone for any such apps because there is a high possibility that they would be malicious. Hummer was an app like this and infected almost 1.4 million Android devices per day in early 2016. Its presence was most prevalent in India, Russia and the Philippines.

You inadvertently downloaded a fraudulent app

Social media apps If you downloaded an app which was malicious in nature, it can lead to your device being affected by Trojans. These malwares can also get root access of the device, make you download fake system updates and gain complete domination over your activities. The only way to be safe is to only download renowned apps and stay away from fake versions of popular apps like YouTube and WhatsApp.

Apple hires Nokia’s Ashish Chowdhary as new India head

Cupertino based technology giant Apple has done an important hiring in India today. The company has hired Ashish Chowdhary, who previously served as Chief Customer Operations Officer for Nokia as its new Country Manager for India. He will take over the operations starting January 2019. Prior to Chowdhary, Michel Coulomb served as the head of Indian operations for Apple. He had taken the post in December 2017 and before him, Sanjay Kaul held the same position. Chowdhary had started working at Nokia in December 2013 and went on to become a part of company’s executive board of Nokia Networks and Nokia Siemens Networks in the year 2009. Besides this, he also served as the Head of Global Services at Nokia Siemens Networks. He was also the Vice President for Enterprise Business at Hughes Communications Ltd. As Apple’s India head Chowdhary has a very challenging task that he needs to do. He would be expected to revive the technology giant’s growth in India, which has proven itself to be a very important market for the technology giant. And this year, Apple has lost a significant market share to newer players like OnePlus. In fact, Apple’s market share has been reduced to 1% in the country. The poor performance of the company has also been acknowledged by CEO Tim Cook. After the company’s Q4 earnings report was published, CEO Cook confirmed that Apple had a ‘flat’ business in the country. He also went on to say that Apple was forced to increase the prices of its devices in the country after the value of Rupee fell against that of US Dollar. It is worth noticing that Rupee’s value has fallen by around 15% against dollar in the last few months and other companies are also expected to increase the prices of their devices amid this. However, Tim Cook did not seem deterred by these results and only described Apple’s fall in India as ‘speed bumps’ in a long journey. He was quoted saying, “I am a big believer in India. I am very bullish on the country and the people and our ability to do well there.”

Always glued to social media apps? They may be affecting your mental well-being

Most of us can’t think of going a day without social media. The new way of keeping in touch with friends is by sharing updates on Facebook, posting Stories on Snapchat and Instagram and speaking about your views on Twitter. It wouldn’t be wrong to say that some of us are even addicted to it. And, according to a new study that has been conducted by the Psychology Department at Penn State University has shown an interesting revelation about social media and our mental and emotional well-being. The study says that there is a direct link between an increase in social media use and the user’s emotional state. The study was conducted on 143 students and it went on for a period of three weeks. During this time, these students were assigned how much time they could spend on social media apps including Facebook, Snapchat and Instagram. To be precise, each student was asked to limit his social media usage to 10 minutes per app every day. So in total, they were allowed 30 minutes of social media use per day. But, they had a choice of limiting their usage or to continue using the apps as they generally did. In order to document the change, all the participants were asked to take a baseline test before the experiment began and this was followed by a weekly assessment on standard tests for social support, depression and more. The report goes on to say that the test group “showed significant reductions” in the feeling of depression and loneliness compared to the group that used social media like they did regularly. Furthermore, there was also a reduction in ‘fear of missing out’ and anxiety in the groups that limited their usage as compare to others. For those unaware, fear of missing out or FOMO, as its popularly called is a prevalent feeling of apprehension that other people maybe having rewarding experiences from which one is absent. However, according to researchers behind the study, this cannot be considered as complete and other researchers can take the study forward to get results that are more comprehensive. According to an initial report by TechCrunch, the study has been published in the latest Journal of Social and Clinical Psychology.

OnePlus 7 would not be the company’s first 5G smartphone: Report

Last month, OnePlus announced that it will be launching a smartphone that will have 5G connectivity. Other than that, there has been no word from the company regarding its upcoming 5G device. But recently, a spokesperson from OnePlus said to CNET that OnePlus 7, which will be the successor to the company’s current flagship, will not come with 5G connectivity. But then, the company does have plans to kick off a lineup of devices which would include the company’s first 5G smartphone. OnePlus’s smartphone with 5G connectivity is expected to be launched in early 2019 and there is a possibility that the company would unveil it during the Mobile World Congress that is scheduled for February next year and will be held in Barcelona, Spain. However, right now this is just a speculation and there is no official word on it. It has been suggested that the upcoming device by OnePlus that has 5G connectivity will be more expensive than the current lineup, but the company doesn’t instead to let go off its ‘affordable flagship’ mantra. So, according to reports, OnePlus is planning a separate lineup for its 5G device. If this is true, then we would expect to see some features that OnePlus has been avoiding for long in its new device. For instance, wireless charging. OnePlus recently launched its 6T smartphone that is available at a starting price of Rs 37,999. The smartphone features a 6.41-inch Optic AMOLED Full HD+ display and sports an in-display fingerprint sensor and a waterdrop-shaped notch on the top. It is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 octa-core processor and is clubbed with either 6GB or 8GB of RAM. OnePlus 6T has a dual rear camera setup with 16MP and 20MP sensors and there is also a selfie camera with a 16MP sensor. Although the sensors of the smartphone are the same as OnePlus 6, there are new modes like Night Scape and Studio Lighting. The device runs Android 9 Pie skinned with OxygenOS 9.0 and houses a 3,700mAh battery. Recently, OnePlus also launched a Thunder Purple coloured variant of OnePlus 6T that is only available with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. The new colour variant of the device is set to launch in India on November 16.

Apple has signed a deal with Amazon to start selling its products directly on the e-commerce platform. Amazon has said that it will sell more Apple products going forward including the device launched this year like iPad Pro, iPhone XR, iPhone XS, and Apple Watch Series 4. Although Amazon has always had Apple products on the website, they have only been available via third-party sellers. And this meant that at times, products were also imported and would bear extremely inflated price tags. This deal between the two players would mean that consistent pricing and buying directly from Apple. Customers will also be able to benefit from Amazon Prime service. Amazon will be selling Apple products in the US, UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Japan, and India. The new products would come to Apple on Amazon in the next few weeks. An Amazon spokesperson said on Friday, “Amazon is constantly working to enhance the customer experience, and one of the ways we do this is by increasing selection of the products we know customers want. We look forward to expanding our assortment of Apple and Beats products globally.” If you have subscribed to Amazon Prime, you would be able to benefit from the added services such as one-day delivery. For the technology giant, the deal with the biggest e-commerce website means reaching more customers. Speaking on the deal, Apple spokesman Nick Leahy said, “We’re working with Amazon to improve the experience for Apple customers on their site, and we look forward to those customers having another great way to buy iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Mac and more.” However, HomePod is not included in the deal. Other products from Apple don’t directly compete with Amazon offer, but HomePod competes directly with Amazon Echo. When asked about excluding HomePod, Amazon’s spokesperson said, “We make assortment decisions all the time, based on terms and a large number of other factors.” As per independent sellers who sell Apple products on Amazon will have to remove the listing after January 4, 2019. These sellers can continue selling Apple products on Amazon, however, for doing so they would need to apply to become an authorized Apple reseller.

Apple announces free repairs for these ‘defective’ iPhones and MacBook Pros

Cupertino-based technology giant Apple has admitted that iPhone X’s display. Apple’s tenth anniversary edition that garnered a lot of sales for the company last year is said to have “touch issues” in its display. The issue in iPhone X was first reported by Bloomberg and was later confirmed by the company itself. Apple now has a support page for the issue and it says that iPhone X’s display encountered the touch issues “due to a component that might fail on the display module.” However, as of now there is no word on how may devices are affected by the issue. According to what Apple has said on its support page, if the display of your iPhone X or a part of it does not respond to intermittently to touch, it means you own one among the faulty units of the device. In other cases, the display of iPhone X may react without the user even touching the device. This also happens because of the touch component on the display. If you are facing either of the two issues, you can head to an Apple Authorized Service Provider and get their iPhone X’s screen replaced for free. It is worth noticing that no other iPhones are eligible for the program and if you indeed are planning to get your iPhone X’s display under the program, it will be examined to verify the issue first. Also, before heading out to get the screen replaced, backup your smartphone‘s data on iCloud or iTunes. Another thing that you should know is that the program has no effect on the standard warranty coverage of iPhone X. Also, if your iPhone X has any damage which impairs the ability of complete repair, Apple service centre will fix that before replacing your screen. But anything additional that the company does to fix repairs would not be free. Apple’s repair program covers affected iPhone X devices after the first retail sale of the smartphone. Other than iPhones, MacBook Pro 13-inch (non-Touch bar) are also facing an issue. A number of models with 128GB and 256GB SSD are facing an issue that results in failure of the drive and results in data losses. According to Apple, the affected units were sold between June 2017 and June 2018. The technology giant will be servicing these SSDs for free and it has sent an email to its customers to make them aware about the program. MacBook owners can enter the serial number of their device on Apple’s support page and find out if they qualify for the program.

Samsung foldable phone: 10 things you should know

Last week saw Samsung unveiling its foldable phone at its developer conference. We did get a first look at the much talked about device and now we know for sure that it’s real, but then, the technology giant has revealed very limited information about it. We would have to wait for future updates from the company to know more, but as of now, we have pulled together all the information we could to list down everything that you should know about Samsung’s foldable phone. Check out our list now:

What is a foldable phone?

Samsung foldable phone 1 According to Samsung, it’s foldable phone is a device that looks like a tablet when fully opened and acts like a phone when folded inwards from the centre. The newly unveiled device by Samsung comes with a cellular connection. It is worth noticing that Royole’s FlexPai, which is also a foldable device, has an outward folding display, unlike Samsung’s which folds inwards.

The name of the device

Samsung foldable phone 2 As of now, there is no official word about Samsung’s foldable phone’s name. However, reports online point towards two names – Samsung Galaxy F and Samsung Galaxy X. But then, we cannot confirm anything till the company makes the device’s name official.

The display

samsung foldable phone - foldable adhesive   There are two displays on Samsung’s foldable phone. The cover display is 4.58 inches in size and has an aspect ratio of 21:9. The screen has an 840×1960 resolution and comes with a density of 420 dpi. It can be used when the device is folded into a candybar phone. The main display of the device is 7.3 inches and comes with an aspect ratio of 4.2:3. It has a pixel resolution of 1536×2152 and comes with a display density of 420 dpi. But those are just the specifications. Samsung has actually created a new display for its device and is called it the Infinity Flex Display. Any smartphone’s display is made up of several layers. However, they usually cannot move. In its Infinity Flex Display, Samsung has used a new adhesive in order to coat the layers of the screen in a way that they can fold a “hundreds of thousands of times.”

The battery life

Samsung foldable phone 4 According to Samsung’s Jisun Park, the company intends to give its foldable device a battery that lasts longer than its current Galaxy smartphones. And Samsung wants to achieve this in spite of accommodating a bigger and more active screen that is bound to drain more battery.

The operating system

Samsung foldable phone 6 The foldable phone wasn’t the only new thing that Samsung spoke about last week. The South Korean technology giant also unveiled the redesigned version of its custom software. Called One UI, the operating system is based on Android and will be used on the foldable phone as well as all other future Samsung smartphones. The One UI beta will be made available by the company this month, but only for Android Pie users.

The apps

Samsung foldable phone 7 Samsung was very careful at its developer conference to not speak too much about the device. So as of now, we know very little about the apps that we would be able to use on Samsung’s foldable phone. It would be safe to assume that Google’s suite of apps would be present along with some apps made by Samsung like SmartThings. Besides these, we know that Flipboard will be present on the device. While currently there is no word on what other apps will be available on Samsung’s foldable phone, we can expect some popular ones to be there are the device’s key feature is its ability to multitask. In the tablet mode, users can run up to three apps at once, according to Samsung.

What happens to an app that is running on the device when you fold it?

Samsung foldable phone 8 The device will automatically transfer the app or the screen the user is looking at to the other display. So if you are using an app in tablet mode and you close the phone, the same screen will start reflecting on the device’s second display.

The advantage

Samsung foldable phone 3 The main advantage of a Samsung’s foldable phone is that you get a lot of extra screen space. And let’s face it: A 7.3-inch display does offer a lot more space than what we get otherwise from smartphones. And another key advantage is the multitasking that the company promises. The foldable phone by Samsung is said to have the ability to run three apps at once or let users access more features of a particular app at once. We consider both of these as important benefits that the users can get from the phone.

When will Samsung’s foldable phone will finally be launched?

Samsung foldable phone 8 Reports have surfaced online that claim that Samsung’s foldable device will be launched along with its Galaxy S10 lineup in 2019. The device that we saw last week was only a prototype and the foldable phone is also expected to be there at CES 2019. There is no word regarding the sales of the phone yet, but company has said that it will begin mass production in “coming months.”

The competition

Samsung foldable phone 9 The era of foldable phones has officially begun. The ZTE Axon M and Royole FlexPai are already there and other players like LG and Huawei are also working on their foldable phones.

How to recall a sent email in Gmail

Did you just send out an email to your potential employer with an error that will surely spoil your first impression? Or did you inadvertently send an email to your boss that was meant for someone else? These situations can be embarrassing and can often put people in a place they would rather not be in. We have all done this at some point in our lives. We have all been in a situation where we notice an unacceptable error only after hitting the dreadful ‘Send’ button. But then, it’s not exactly something you need to worry about. There is a way you can save yourself from embarrassment the next time something like this happens. But even then, you must be quick as Gmail originally gives users 5 seconds to recall a sent email, but we can tell you how to extend that time up to 30 seconds. But first let’s talk about what you can do to recall a sent email. You must have noticed that each time you send an email a box appears to notify that the email has been sent. If you use the old version of Gmail, then it would appear on the top, and if you have upgraded to the revamped version, it would appear on bottom left. Right after you send the email this box will show you an option of ‘Undo’. You must click it within five seconds of sending the email in order to recall it. But let’s face it. Five seconds are not always enough. Actually, it only works if you change your mind about sending the email the second you hit ‘Send’. And how many times does that happen? So, if you think you would like to have an option of recalling emails on Google‘s popular email service even after five seconds are over, then here’s what you need to do:
  1. Go to the gear icon on top right of the email page.
  2. Scroll down to ‘Settings’.
  3. Go down in ‘General Settings’ to ‘Undo Send.’
  4. You would see a drop-box next to ‘Undo Send’ where the default option of 5 seconds would be selected.
