Google is making Android Q’s gesture navigation better before release: Here’s how

Before rolling out Android Q to the masses, technology giant Google is experimenting with its gesture-based navigation continuously so that it can be improved as much as possible. Lately, the company has been inching towards the approach that Apple adopted with its iPhone X. However, for this, Google had to redesign the back button on its Android platform. Going forward, the company will not be keeping an on-screen button. Instead, it will be using a swiping motion to go back. So basically, the users will have to swipe inwards from either side of the display to go back on their Android devices. We should mention that this change clashes with the slide-out menus of a number of smartphone apps. Most apps have their hamburger icons placed on the side that lets users access various settings. This has been the case for so many years now that users now almost intuitively slide their finger to access the drawer menu settings. But now, this does not work in the same way anymore and one has to slide their finger diagonally to access the menu. If this is a change that you don’t really like, then we have some good news for you. The company is working to improve this in its upcoming Android Q beta 5. The search giant has said that in order to access slide-out menus, people would now only have to tap and hold near the edge of the display. This obviously only implies to those who are using fully gestural navigation on their device.

With this solution, Google’s new feature that allows users to go back with just a swipe from either side of the screen will continue to work as well. But that’s not all. According to a report in 9to5Google, a user who got the next beat of Android Q a little early says that a new setting has been added to his device called ‘Back Sensitivity.’ The user has also said that the new setting has led to a “marked improvement to navigation” on his handset. In case you don’t like the new gesture system on Android Q, there will also be an option of returning to the older three-button navigation. So, if you are more comfortable with that and don’t want to try something new, you can still opt for that. The option is there in the beta releases of Android Q and it is also expected to be a part of the stable release. Google has made payments easier on Chrome: Here’s how

Google Chrome will now be able to pay in a much easier way when they shop online. Google has rolled out an update that lets users access payment information that they have stores in their Account. Earlier one had the option of syncing this information between browsers on various platforms by switching on the option of Google Sync. But now, the company has made this much easier as it will let users auto-fill information for payments just by signing in to their Google Account on desktop. We should mention that one would not need to enable Chrome sync in order to do this. The feature has been made with Google Pay, that the company is expanding to more websites on the internet. It is worth noticing that Google only started doing this once it rebranded its payment service from ‘Android Pay’, which makes sense as it shows that it is cross-platform in nature and not only limited to smartphones. Around a fortnight back, the technology giant also announced that Google Pay’s integration with PayPal will also be available to online merchants that accept the company’s payment on their websites as well as on their apps. With the new option that has been enabled, Chrome users on the desktop will get the ability to opt for a saved payment card from their Google Accounts. This option will pop-up when they will be checking out to make the payment. The users will have to enter their card’s CVC number to complete the transaction and then, they will get a receipt from Google Pay about their purchase. UPI APP GOOGLE TEZ In addition to this, users will also have the option of managing their credit and debit cards that are associated with their Google Accounts. For doing this, they can head to Account Settings and then tap on Payments & Subscriptions > Payment methods. We should also point out that if you use this new feature, it will not automatically enable the Chrome sync option. You will have to do that manually if you want information like bookmarks, passwords and history to be synced across all your devices. This feature definitely makes payments way easier for those who prefer to shop online and don’t exactly prefer to have Chrome synced on all their devices. There are people who would prefer to keep information on their work laptop and their personal devices separate and they are likely to benefit from it. iOS 13 is set to change FaceTime calls forever

0
A few weeks back at the WWDC 2019, Apple gave the first look at its iOS 13 operating system. However, developer beta of iOS versions always gives a better understanding of what all the software will get to the devices. iOS 13’s third beta developer is now out and it comes with a new feature that makes it look like you are directly staring at the selfie camera of your iPhone while you are making a FaceTime call. So even when you are looking at the screen of your smartphone to see the person you are talking to, your iPhone with iOS 13 will make it look like you are looking at the front camera. The feature was spotted by Mike Rundle on Twitter and as of now, it only seems to be working on the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max. Users have the option of enabling or disabling it from within the FaceTime app. Usually, the person we are talking to via a video call looks like he is looking at one side or the other because no one really looks at the selfie camera the entire time. The entire purpose of a video call is to see the person you are talking to and one can only do that when they look at the screen and not the front-facing camera on their handset. But Apple seems to have found the solution for this with its ‘FaceTime Attention Correction’ feature. The company seems to have deployed some kind of an image manipulation tool to make it look like the user is looking at the selfie camera of the device. As a result, people having a FaceTime call will always feel like they have an eye contact with one another, even if in reality, they don’t. It is worth pointing that it was Rundle, who had said in 2017 that Apple would be launching this feature in a future iOS version.
Dave Schunik has explained on Twitter that the effect has been added using ARKit by mapping user’s face and then adjusting the position of their eyes. However, what is not clear as of now is that which handsets by Apple will eventually get this feature. It is also unknown if the feature will work with Group Calls on FaceTime. We expect to find out more about the new feature when it arrives in the public facing beta next week. PUBG Mobile: How to choose the right grip?

Since popular battle royale PUBG made its way to smartphones as PUBG Mobile, scores of players across the globe are just focussed on somehow getting the chicken dinner. To be the last standing man in the game, pure skill does not help and one needs to know a number of tips and tricks. Besides this, having knowledge of weapons and some secret locations also help. But then, there is one more thing that you must know about: Grips. They can be equipped on various guns in the play and they drastically enhance the players’ accuracy. However, using any grip with any gun wouldn’t help either. A grip proves to be beneficial only when it adds some value to achieving better kills. Here, we have listed down all the PUBG Mobile grips in the order of their versatility and performance during combat based on the abilities of each gun. Take a look:

Number 1 – The Half Grip

This is the most versatile grip that is available in PUBG Mobile as of now and it gets a number of upgrades to a player’s skills. When a player is engaged in combat, he needs the ability to shoot at and stay on the target the most. According to Tencent Games, the half grip fairly reduces recoil and most importantly improves recoil recovery. This enables the player to get better aimed and a greater number of shots at the enemy. While half grip does a better job at controlling the vertical recoil than it does with horizontal recoil, but it has a quick recovery time that can make one overlook all of its other shortcomings. However, we should point out that one major shortcoming is also that the weapon steadiness decreases when the player uses this attachment. So, it is advisable to use this grip only with steady weapons like UMP9, AUG A3, and the Vector.

Number 2 – The Thumb Grip

A number of PUBG Mobile players place their bets on the vertical grip and say that it is better than the thumb grip. But then, the thumb gets the second spot on the list because it is extremely versatile. We should mention that while the thumb grip lessens the recoil on a good scale, it cannot match up to the vertical grip. Another thing worth mentioning is that it reduces the time taken to open a scope. The company has also said that it enhances weapon stability.

Number 3 – The Vertical Grip

The vertical grip is the preferred choice of weapon for many who play PUBG Mobile and as the name suggests, it comes with a strong vertical kick. It is the only attachment that is actually compatible with the Tommy Gun. The company says that the vertical grip is very versatile. While the vertical recoil is predictable, the horizontal one is not as it goes both the ways. It also offers good weapon stability.

Number 4 – The Angled Grip

The angled grip is considered to be the best one for SMGs and ARs in PUBG Mobile and it makes a great difference to the horizontal recoil when kept in a steady state. It is also said to offer better ADS speed. But then, it is not as good as the thumb grip when it comes to weapon steadiness.

Number 5 – The Light Grip

The light grip is undeniably the best when it comes to taking single shots in PUBG Mobile. It should be used with stable guns like the Vector or UMP9 for enhancing their accuracy. It comes with excellent weapon stability, but then, the same cannot be said for its recoil. The downside of the grip is that it is not versatile.

#NoChineseApps: Here’s a list of apps you need to look out for

Time and again, concerns over Chinese apps have popped up. Some past reports have claimed that a number of China-based apps have a lot of paedophiles on them. Others have said that there is no way for users to know if the apps are violating the country’s laws since their privacy policies are only available in their local language. Prior to that, Indian intelligence agencies had listed over thirty-eight Chinese apps that they termed as ‘dangerous’. Although all this happened months back, today, Indian netizens on Twitter started posting with the hashtag #NoChineseApps. Samsung’s ‘made for India’ shopping app has been shut down

0
South Korean technology giant Samsung has quietly shut down its shopping app that it had specifically built for the Indian market. Dubbed Samsung Mall, the AI-backed Android shopping app was aimed at helping users identify various objects around them and then locate the on e-commerce platforms so that they could make the purchase. With Samsung’s app, users did not have to check out various shopping websites for a particular product that they were looking for. The company had even deployed a big research and development team in the country to run the app. However, a year and a half after its launch, the technology giant has shut down Samsung Mall. The app was exclusively available on select Samsung smartphones and to be precise, it was launched along with the Galaxy On7 Prime handset in the country. The report about the app being shut down first appeared in TizenHelp. At the time of the launch of the Samsung Mall app, the company had said that it would come with features from its digital assistant Bixby. We should mention that while Bixby enables users to identify objects with photos, it does not have the functionality of letting them make the purchase. Sanjay Razdan, Director of Samsung India was quoted by a popular daily at the time of the launch of the app saying, “The first insight while developing Samsung Mall was that consumers may be looking to find the price, the colour, delivery options and a lot of other things. Indian consumers want to find the best deals first. They aren’t tied up with one particular portal as well.” Samsung Mall shut down The South Korean technology giant joined hands with Amazon India, ShopClues and TataCLiQ so that the app would show relevant results. The aim was to make it a “one-stop online experience” app. In addition to this, Samsung Mall also lets users compare the prices of products to see from where they could buy at the lowest possible cost. According to a report in TechCrunch that quotes Randy Nelson, head of Mobile Insights at SensorTower, since March 2018, Samsung Mall app was downloaded five million times from the Google Play Store. He said, “Downloads in May totalled 275,000 — which was down 38% year-over-year from 476,000 in May 2018. It was ranked No. 1,055 by downloads in India’s Google Play store in May — down from 487 a year ago.”
We should mention that till a few years back Samsung dominated the budget smartphone market in India and competed fiercely with Apple in the premium segment. While the budget handset market in the country is currently being led by Xiaomi, the premium segment has seen new players like OnePlus. However, this year, the South Korean company has changed its strategy and launched a number of smartphones that compete against offerings from Xiaomi. It clearly is fighting to take its crown back. As of now, the company has not issued a formal statement about the closing down of the app, so we can’t really say why it took this step. WhatsApp beta version spotted with a QR Code Shortcut: Here’s more on it

0
Instant messaging platform WhatsApp keeps on getting new features that make it more useful and relevant. Last week, the company reportedly started testing a feature that allows its users to share their status on Facebook, Instagram stories, Gmail and Google Photos directly from the app itself. Now, WhatsApp’s dedicated QR Code Shortcut has been spotted in the beta version of its Android app. WABetaInfo shared the report about this on its official Twitter handle and shared a screenshot of the feature as well. The tweet reads, “In the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.19.189 update, WhatsApp is working on a QR Code shortcut (it’s not visible yet). The feature will be enabled in future.” According to the screenshot, it can be seen that soon the users would be able to access the QR code feature on the app using the dedicated button. The tweet says that the company is still working on this new feature and will soon release it for the users. This new feature was first spotted in November last year. As the name suggests, it allows the user to share their profiles by scanning QR codes. It is similar to Nametag scanning on Instagram. With the feature, if the user wants to share his contacts information, he can do so just by tapping on the QR button in his profile. On doing this, the users will see a QR code on their profile that can be used by other users to add them as contacts just by scanning it via their cameras. As of now, there is no word from the company about when this new feature will be rolled out to the stable version of the app. Many other apps like Instagram and LinkedIn let users share their profile to other users via QR codes. As we mentioned earlier, recently, WhatsApp rolled a new feature for all the users of its beta programme. The new feature allows the users to share their photos and videos that they shared on their WhatsApp status to Facebook, Instagram, Google and Google Photos from the app itself. WhatsApp status is a feature that allows the user to share their pictures and videos on their profile that disappear after 24 hours. Status on WhatsApp is exactly like Stories on Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and Snapchat. Currently, this new feature has been released for WhatsApp beta version 2.19.151 for Android. The company is expected to release it for iOS soon. Honest Copying: Xiaomi has honestly copied Apple’s Memoji in its new Mimoji feature?

Getting inspired from each other is nothing new in the smartphone industry. We see it happen a number of times every year. When Apple launched its futuristic-looking iPhone X, there was hardly any smartphone maker that didn’t draw inspiration from the design of the handset. But then, it is one thing to get inspired, and an entirely different thing out-rightly copy. We are talking about Xiaomi. The Chinese technology brand has introduced new avatars for its Xiaomi Mimoji feature. Which many reports from all over the world have said look just like Apple’s Memoji, they have gone ahead and even spoken about the similarity in the name. Like said, the Chinese company has gone ahead and released its own version of animated mobile bob-heads, which look very similar to the one Apple had released last year. Talking more about the Xiaomi Mimoji, according to Engadget’s Chinese version, the company’s AR avatars are a lot like Apple’s Memoji and even the facial expressions and the colour palette that has been used looks similar. Xiaomi’s Mimoji avatars earlier used augmented reality to mimic a smartphone user’s facial expressions on anthropomorphic animals. However, with the launch of Xiaomi’s Mi CC9 smartphones, the feature now contains human avatars that look very similar to the ones you see on Apple’s. With this, the feature from the company is drawing a lot of flak from the tech fraternity because it has picked the feature completely from the Cupertino-based technology giant. Even the name Mimoji is being highlighted a lot because of its extreme similarity. But then, there are a few more facts involved. Firstly, the Cupertino-based technology giant does not own the concept of AR-based virtual avatars and it does not have the trademark for Memojis either. Furthermore, the concept existed even before Apple introduced it at WWDC 2018. To recall, Samsung was quicker than Apple and Xiaomi to come up with its AR Emojis in Galaxy S9 in February last year. apple Memoji However, many on social media and otherwise have argued how similar Xiaomi‘s Mimoji feature is to Apple’s Memoji, it looks blatantly copied some said. Over that, Xiaomi’s PR executives are actually threatening to take legal action against any forum posters in China for noting the similarities between the two. While this may seem minor to a giant like Apple, the Mimoji is a good example of how companies at times tend to overlap, on some features, with each other in the smartphone industry. It also reminds us that laws around copyright, trademark and patent are very inconsistent and hence, these also need to be strengthened. Update: Xiaomi Global has issued a statement Via Xu Jieyun (PR Head, Xiaomi) regarding the topic related to Mimoji: 1. How does Mimoji of Xiaomi and Apple’s Memoji name look alike? A: When Xiaomi released the first generation of Mi Meng in May 2018, the English name was called Mimoji, and the package name of the APK was also called Mimoji. Apple enabled Memoji on June 5, 2018. The functional logic of the two products is very different. In fact, the etymology comes from Emoji (Japanese: “Imitation” Roman spelling). 2. Why is the statement very slow and issued only one day after the incident? A: It takes time for the internal self-examination and self-examination. In addition, all forensic work has been completed before the statement is issued. With the statement, Xiaomi has said that they were the ones who came up with the animated Avatars and the name before Apple. We still await Apple’s response on the same. Instagram gets a new chat sticker for Stories that lets you invite people for a group chat

The social media app that everyone is currently hooked to is Instagram. Naturally, Facebook has been focussing on it a lot to make sure that the app stays ahead of its rivals and remains relevant to the users. For ensuring this, the company keeps on adding new and interesting features to Instagram. The latest among these is a Stories Sticker that has just been rolled out to Instagram. The new feature – called chat sticker – enables people to ask their followers to join a group chat. The one who posts the sticker will also be able to decide who all can join the chat. We should mention that the new sticker joins a number of other stickers that Instagram has rolled out for its Stories including Quizzes, Polls, Question boxes, Countdowns and more. The chat sticker is basically meant for times when you wish to have a big group conversation about something. This will also prove to be useful when you are making plans with a large group of people. When somebody will share a chat sticker on their Instagram Story, their friends will be able to tap on it if they want to join the conversation. However, this only sends a request to the original poster and they get to decide whether or not the person who requested gets to join in. The chat will take place in the Direct Messages section of the photo-sharing app. Users will also have the option of ending the chat at any point in time. It is worth noticing that the feature seems to be aimed at those who interact with real friends and people they actually know on Instagram. We are yet to see how influencers would use it, or whether they will find it useful at all. While they can use it to start a conversation with their fans, it can also prove to be very chaotic if they do because too many people may want to join in.
The feature actually does not seem aimed at those who use Instagram as just a way of building their brand and growing their following. Rather it seems for those who use it for connecting with their friends and talking about things that they love. While the platform is increasingly getting crowded with influencers and branded content, people who use Instagram as it was originally meant to be used still exist. A good number of people also do not prefer to have a public profile and instead opt for a private one for the kind of privacy it offers. This feature will be useful for people like that.
