Google CEO Sundar Pichai says that privacy is not a “luxury good”

0
The rivalry between Google and Apple is no secret. The two technology companies leave no chance of taking a jab at each other. The latest among these came from Google CEO Sundar Pichai when he said that privacy cannot be a “luxury good” that is only available for those who can buy premium products and services. This was a subtle dig that Pichai took at Apple, which promises to provide more security and privacy than anyone else and is known for its luxury products. In an op-ed written for The New York Times, CEO Sundar Pichai has defended Google’s approach towards privacy and user data. He wrote, “Privacy must be equally available to everyone in the world, Google’s approach is to make privacy more democratic.” The technology giant has been facing a lot of questions about how it collects users’ location data. Pichai further wrote, “People today are rightly concerned about how their information is used and shared, yet they all define privacy in their own ways. I’ve seen this firsthand as I talk to people in different parts of the world. Privacy is personal, which makes it even more vital for companies to give people clear, individual choices around how their data is used.” At the recently concluded Google I/O 2019, the technology company announced a number of additional privacy and security tools for users across its various products and platforms. Pichai also said that Google focusses on everybody with its products and services. He wrote, “For everyone” is a core philosophy for Google; it’s built into our mission to create products that are universally accessible and useful. That’s why Search works the same for everyone, whether you’re a professor at Harvard or a student in rural Indonesia.” In addition to this, he has also called on the US to come up with new legislation to protect users’ data. “Legislation will help us work toward ensuring that privacy protections are available to more people around the world,” Pichai wrote.
It is worth mentioning that at Google I/O 2019, the company introduced its Android Q operating system, that comes with a number of enhanced features that focus on privacy. Google is giving users more control over the permissions they give to apps too. Android Q’s beta 3 has been rolled out to 21 smartphones by the company and Google has said that the stable version of the operating system will also roll out soon.

Samsung Galaxy Fold release date “will not be too late”: CEO DJ Koh

0
South Korean technology giant Samsung reportedly plans to announce a new release date for its Galaxy Fold smartphone soon. According to a report that has surfaced online, Co-CEO DJ Koh, who heads the company’s mobile business has said that Samsung has “reviewed the defect caused from substances, and we will reach a conclusion today or tomorrow.” The report first surfaced in The Korea Herald and it suggests that Samsung may have found a solution to the problem that a number of reviewers in the United States encountered. To recall, it was reported that some units of the Samsung Galaxy Fold broke with just a day or two of usage. The company then postponed the sale of the handset indefinitely. The company now plans to improve the durability of the exposed areas of the hinge and according to the report, it will also reduce the gap between the display’s bezels and its protective layer. Some of the reviewers also inadvertently removed that layer, which led to screen malfunctions. They said that the layer on top of the smartphone looked like a regular screen protector. Koh has also added that the company will “not be too late” when asked about whether Samsung Galaxy Fold will start shipping in the United States within a month. It was reported earlier this week that Samsung plans to cancel pre-orders if the handset does not start shipping till May 32. However, with what Koh said, it is certain that at least the company is not planning to cancel the smartphone altogether. To recall, the Galaxy Fold is priced at $1,980 and Samsung has also that the smartphone will be launched in India too. The South Korean technology giant has said in the past that with Galaxy Fold, it will be providing its customers with a much larger screen that has more real estate. When the issue was discovered, Samsung issued a statement talking about the problem saying:
“A limited number of early Galaxy Fold samples were provided to media for review. We have received a few reports regarding the main display on the samples provided. We will thoroughly inspect these units in person to determine the cause of the matter. Separately, a few reviewers reported having removed the top layer of the display causing damage to the screen. The main display on the Galaxy Fold features a top protective layer, which is part of the display structure designed to protect the screen from unintended scratches. Removing the protective layer or adding adhesives to the main display may cause damage. We will ensure this information is clearly delivered to our customers.”

What will Google name Android Q?

0
It’s that time of the year when we all start guessing what Google will name its operating system after. The technology giant has a tradition of naming new versions of its operating system after desserts. Needless to say, this time it will be very tricky for Google to decide on a name for Android Q as there are hardly any desserts that begin with the letter ‘Q’. We even searched Wikipedia, but probably for the first time, the website that is literally like an encyclopedia, could not provide us with too many results. In the entire list of desserts on Wikipedia, we could find only six that begin with the letter Q – Queijadinha, Qurabiya, Queen of Puddings, Quindim, Qottab and Quesito. Another dessert that we can think of is Quince Jam. But let’s face it, none of them is too popular. We had not even heard of any of them before we scanned the page. And considering that Google usually goes for a dessert that has a global popularity, we really doubt if it would really pick one of these for Android Q‘s name. Google itself has acknowledged that naming Android Q is a problem. Speaking about this, Sameer Samat, Google’s vice president of product management for Android and Play. “We’re super excited about the desserts. At the same time, Q is a hard letter. But we’re looking at it.” While Google can also completely miss naming the operating system after a dessert for once, we know that this is highly unlikely to happen. The reason for this is that naming Android versions after desserts play into Google’s image. By adopting a fun name for its operating system, Google puts across a message that its smartphones are for everyone and not just aimed at software geeks. Other companies like Apple and Microsoft have a fairly straightforward approach. Over the years we have seen Google name its Android operating system after Cupcake, Donut, Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich, Jellybean, KitKat, Lollipop, Marshmallow, Nougat, Oreo, and Pie.
The technology giant usually does not announce the name of its Android operating system until its closer to the release. Considering this, it does not have too much time to decide on a name for its operating system. Personally, we think that Google would settle for Quince Jam. But then, we can’t really bet on it seeing that ‘Q’ is such a tricky letter. What do you think Google will name its Android Q? Let us know in the comments.

BSNL revises its Rs 47 and Rs 198 prepaid plans to offer double data and validity

It seems like the telecom war to get prepaid customers is getting more aggressive by the day. The latest change is by the state-owned telecom operator BSNL (Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited). BSNL has once again revised its prepaid plans to compete with the other telecom operators. The company has revised two of its earlier prepaid plans to offer more data to the users without any increase in the cost. The new plan revise from BSNL comes to compete in the ever-competitive telecom sector of India. The competitors namely Jio and Airtel have a few plans at the same price point and they offer similar benefits. To get ahead in the race, BSNL has taken this measure. Now, Rs 47 along with Rs 198 prepaid plans of BSNL will offer more data than it offered earlier. The Rs 198 plan will now include the double data offer after the revision along with double validity. So, now the Rs 198 prepaid plan will offer 54 days of validity instead of 28 days. And the users will get 108GB of data instead of 42GB offered earlier. On the other hand, the Rs 47 prepaid plan will also offer 1GB of data now, after the plans revision. It will also offer unlimited calling and messages for 9 days. Earlier the validity of the plan was 11 days but it didn’t offer any data benefits to the user. With the revision, the Rs 47 prepaid pack offers unlimited calling and data to the user, which was not done so earlier. But it should be noted that, currently the plan is active in all circles and cities except Delhi and Mumbai (where its counterpart MTNL is present). Although BSNL has reduced the validity of the Rs 47 prepaid plan from 11 days to 9 days, it has added data benefits to the pack.
Also, the State-owned telecom operator has extended the deadline of its Bumper Offer benefits once more, till June 30, 2019. The plan and its benefits were to expire on April 30, but now it will expire next month. And till then it will offer the same benefits and recharge plans. In the Bumper Offer benefits, the selected prepaid pack users will get 2.21GB of additional data every day. This benefit and extensions are valid for all the prepaid plans offered by BSNL from Rs 186 to Rs 1,699. The revised plans in the Bumper Offer will give about 3.21GB of data every day to the user when recharged using the Rs 186 or Rs 429 pack. Also, the Rs 485 and Rs 666 prepaid plan will offer 3.7GB of data every day to the users.

Google Play Store payments can now be made using cash

Google I/O 2019 marks for some of the new and innovative technology launches in the field of smartphones and software. Google’s Android platform is one of the most innovative one and now the company has announced its new Android Q OS. But other than the Android, Google has also introduced changes to its Play Store. The company has announced that going forward, the users can pay for any apps using cash. With this, the company has announced a new way to get the app makers of the emerging markets to generate more revenue while generating revenue of its own. Google’s new “pending transactions” allows the users to adopt different ways with which they can pay without using a credit card or an online payment option. The users/ customers of the emerging markets don’t always hold a credit card. And because of this, they lean towards ad-supported or free-to-play apps and games instead of a paid one. They rarely choose to go for the paid services be it games or apps which includes the in-app purchases. With this new payment option, the Android user can choose between different payment methods. The user will be given the option to choose any payment method at the checkout. The users can go for credit/ debit card or use cash. For cash payments, the users would get a payment code which they can use to purchase using cash at a nearby store. At the store, the user can show the payment code to the cashier and pay the bill using cash. After the transaction is complete, the user will receive an email about the payment. But if the user wants to opt for a refund, they won’t get a cash back. Instead, they will be given Play Store credit which they can use to make another payment. Google’s new payment option doesn’t ask for credit card details or online payment details, as it asks cash to make the payment. Google has already rolled out several other payment options in the past like support for eWallets, UPI, carrier billing etc. It had also partnered with more than 20 carriers in India for billing partnerships with 170 globally.
But it should be noted that the carrier billing is not used globally that’s why the use of cash for making payment will be preferred in some areas. With the launch of a new payment mode, Google has introduced another payment option for the user. Aurash Mahbod, the Director of Engineering responsible for the Play Store and Games on Google Play, speaking at the Google I/O Developer conference said, “We know that emerging markets are a key area of growth for you all, which is why we’re excited to announce ‘pending transactions. This is a new class of delayed form of payment – like cash, bank transfer and direct debit.”

Intel to increase production of 10nm CPUs in June 2019

American multinational chipmaker Intel is almost ready to ship its 10nm processors in large quantities. After delaying it for years, the semiconductor giant has announced that it will begin shipping its 10nm mobile Ice Lake processors in June this year. However, even now, it is not certain when we will get to see the first laptops that are based on these new parts. But then, it is worth mentioning that Intel is boasting about a Core i7 quad-core chip that it will launch in future. The company has touted that the upcoming Core i7 quad-core chip will come with twice the graphics performance, twice the video transcoding speed and up to three times enhanced AI enhancements over its 8th-gen counterpart. While that is a big improvement over the predecessor, we should mention that you would not be able to do heavy duty work on it for long. Intel has said that we can expect to see “multiple” 10nm chips throughout 2019 and 2020 and this will include a GPU for general purposes and server-side processors. The chips will also come with some special parts like an AI-focussed Nervana. It is worth mentioning that you will have to wait for some time before the devices with 7nm chips hit the stores. We should also add that the first product that is based on smaller and denser technology – Xe-based general-purpose GPU – is due to release in 2021. But then, you certainly can expect some gains from it. The company is expecting a boost of 20 percent in performance per watt and Intel has also added that the extreme ultraviolet lithography that is required to make the chipset should be useful for “multiple” generations of smaller processors.
The chipmaker is opening the floodgates in a number of ways. The struggle of the company to manufacture 10nm chips has somewhere held it back and given its rivals like AMD an advantage. While some have been able to catch up to Intel, some have surpassed it. But then we should add that their processes are not exactly comparable at all times. Needless to say, that does not look very good for a company that once took pride in consistently offering the fastest CPUs. Intel has also started offering generation-to-generation improvements without adding on too many cores to its chipsets. With this, everyday users have reasons to upgrade their PC after they skipped incremental revisions by Intel for years. Samsung launches its new ISOCELL Bright GW1 64 Megapixels camera sensor

Cameras of a smartphone are becoming a very important factor that people always consider while buying a handset. Till now, 48MP has been the highest resolution a smartphone camera has held. But now, Samsung has decided to push those numbers to 64 megapixels. The South Korean technology giant has announced a new range of camera sensor for smartphones with a resolution higher than any being sold in the market. With the announcement of these new sensors, Samsung has broken the old resolution competition between the OEM makers. Samsung has launched a 64MP camera sensor, a first in the industry. The new sensor is ISOCELL Bright GW1 and it is capable of clicking 64MP images by merging four pixels into one. It is similar to Samsung’s current 48MP sensor which takes 12MP pictures as default. Even though it is higher in resolution, it uses the same 0.8μm-sized pixels as Samsung’s current 48MP sensor. But the new 64MP sensor is capable of capturing more light with its large sensors than its current flagship sensor. The new ISOCELL Bright GW1 is able to descramble the colour filter for the full-resolution 64MP shots in good light. It competes with Sony’s IMX586 48MP sensor, which comes with the same functionality as the new 64MP sensor from Samsung. But this feature is not available on the Samsung’s 48MP sensor to which the company announced that it will be bringing the ‘descrambling the colour filter’ feature to its old 48MP sensor.
The 48MP sensors have been a hit since the start of this year. We have already seen a number of OEM makers putting a 48MP sensor as the main rear camera sensor in their devices. Companies like Xiaomi, Samsung, Huawei, Oppo, and Vivo have already launched smartphones with a 48MP sensor. But now, Samsung’s new 64MP sensor will be put in more smartphones in the coming future as a main sensor. We could see the mass production of smartphones with Samsung’s ISOCELL Bright GW1 with 64MP sensor in the second half of 2019. The new sensor may also be used in Samsung Galaxy Note 10. Now that Samsung has released its new upgraded sensor, we could see Sony following suit. And once it launches the ‘sensor war’ will unfold, we will be comparing the two to see what they both offer. But it will be interesting to see if the 64MP sensor delivers as it should or it just becomes a ‘show piece’. Tencent Games shuts down PUBG Mobile in China; here’s why

Technology giant Tencent Games has shut down the immensely popular game PUBG Mobile in China after the company failed to secure a license from the government to collect revenues from it. It has been reported that now, the company plans to migrate its users to a similar title like Heping Jingying or Elite Force for Peace. We should also point out that Heping Jingying has been approved for monetization by the Chinese Communist party, primarily because it has patriotic overtones. The game has been described by an analyst as “a tribute to the People’s Liberation Army Air Force”, which is a part of China’s national military. The game also has anti-terrorism themes. PUBG Mobile was initially launched in March 2018 and it has now become one among the most popular games in the world. It has scores of fans across the globe and people spend hours playing the game every day. The popularity and addiction of the game have been so tremendous that it has also faced a ban in some parts of the world. According to China Renaissance, PUBG Mobile had approximately 70 million domestic players. This basically means that the game could have generated annual revenue of approximately $1.18 billion to $1.48 billion via in-app purchases. But then, because of some political and cultural factors, it may not be able to. Over the past few years, the Chinese government has become very hostile towards video games which can be termed as violent and addictive. In addition to this, China’s People’s Daily paper has described Tencent’s hit game Honor of Kings as “poison” that can spread “negative energy”. The company has also started shutting down one game because of the hostility and going forward, it will be seen making accommodations in new titles. Heping Jingying is not only considered patriotic, but it is also less violent than PUBG Mobile. To begin with, a player must be at least 16 years to play the game. And secondly, the characters in the game don’t bleed when they are shot.
Another contributory factor behind PUBG Mobile’s rejection may be geopolitics. Tencent has been licensing the game from South Korea-based Bluehole and it is no secret that Chinese authorities can be hostile towards South Korean goods. But then, we should mention that the move should not affect Chinese gamers as the company will let them port over characters from PUBG Mobile to Heping Jingying, and according to a report in Reuters, the game is very similar to the old one. Speaking about the new game, an analyst told the news agency, “The gameplay, the background, the graphic design and the characters, they’re almost the same.”

PUBG Mobile gets a Baahubali-inspired outfit, available with a limited period discount

PUBG Mobile has scores of fans across the globe. A huge number of the game’s fans are also based in India, considering how popular it is in the country. In an attempt to cater to them, the popular battle-royale game has introduced an outfit that is inspired by the character of Baahubali from the movie-series of the same name. We should mention that both the films in the Baahubali series shattered box office records in India and were universally acclaimed. Coming back to PUBG Mobile, it is not a stranger when it comes to borrowing elements from entertainment franchises. And by picking up the outfit from such a popular film, it surely has made the right choice to woo Indian players. The Baahubali inspired outfit has been named as ‘The Great Indian Warrior’ and it is already available to purchase from the game’s item shop. You can either purchase the Indian warrior themed costume in two pieces or in a single go. But if you buy it in a single go, you will get a discount of 25%. Since the outfit is a new one, when you launch PUBG Mobile, you would see it getting promoted via in-game advertising. It is worth mentioning that the price of the outfit is 1,260 UC (PUBG Mobile in-game currency – Unknown Cash), but if you press the ‘Get It Now’ button, you would get a discount of 25% and the price will come down to 945 UC. The offer is valid till May 15 in PUBG Mobile. As we mentioned earlier, PUBG Mobile players can also get the outfit items separately. The headgear, which is called the ‘Great Indian Warrior Headpiece’, can be bought for 360 UC. The rest of the costume, which has the chest armour, wrist and arm protection, and the bottom wear can be bought at 900 UC from the shop.
However, we should also point out that ‘The Great Indian Warrior’ does not seem to be in collaboration with the official makers of Baahubali. But then, the outfit does have an uncanny resemblance to the clothes that were worn by the character in the popular film. There is no doubt about the fact that it is inspired by the film. PUBG Mobile has also introduced Resident Evil inspired content and in the past, it has also added exclusive in-game costumes by collaborating with Japanese clothing brand A Bathing Ape, which is more popularly known as BAPE.
