Vivo V1Max Review: A stylish smartphone with no complaints at a good price

0

Vivo, the Chinese smartphone manufacturer has expanded its portfolio with the launch of a beautiful sleek smartphone called the Vivo V1Max in India. This is a stunning device to work with. Vivo V1Max is one of the company’s premium mid-end smartphone in the Indian market. Want to know more about it? Then do read on.

Design

The Vivo V1Max is available in white colour and we received the same for review. The Vivo V1Max body is supported by a U-shaped frame, which curves gently at the four corners. The smartphone has a metal back panel along with small plastic bands at the top and bottom. The mobile phone is sleek, it is just 6.80mm thick and has 165g weight. The Vivo V1Max has a bright 5.5-inch full HD display, which is quite impressive and it also comes with bright vibrant colours.

The battery is non-removable, so the users cannot replace it by themselves. The V1Max is dual-SIM enabled (one is Micro and second one is Nano). The second SIM slot doubles up as the slot for expandable storage that is located at the left side of the mobile phone. The power button is located on the right side of the phone along with the volume key. The USB port is located at the bottom of the phone, while the 3.5mm audio port is located at the top of the device. The Vivo V1Max also has two speakers at the rear, one on each of the plastic bands. The primary camera is on the top left (rear) of the mobile phone, which comes with the LED flash. A neat pair of headphones also comes in the box.

Performance

Under the hood, the Vivo V1Max is a reliable and consistent performer. It has the 1.4GHz Octa-Core processor that comes along with 2GB of RAM for applications and services. The users also get 16GB of internal memory to store files. Over that, there is an option to add up to a 128GB microSD card where users can store additional files.  All this runs on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 615. To power the device, Vivo V1Max has its FunTouch OS 2.1 user interface layered over Android 5.0 Lollipop. The smartphone has an easy-to-use interface and an uncomplicated setup process.

The primary camera of Vivo V1Max can capture 13-megapixel still images and 1080p videos. For selfies, there is a 5-megapixel secondary camera. The camera app has a lot of good features and one of the interesting features is the palm activated self-timer, which starts the timer when the camera detects a palm being shown. The camera captures really detailed pictures, but it needs time to focus properly and adjust to the light. The 5-megapixel front camera, on the other hand, needs sufficient amount of light for a good click. But the close-up shots were quite nice.

The Vivo V1Max smartphone’s screen, image and video quality is above average. The dual-speaker offers proper stereo sound while playing music that makes the listening session more entertaining than what you’d get from usual mobile phone speakers. The supplied headphones get the job done and one can hear the beats clearly. The place where the phone stresses a bit is gaming. You can’t play games for too long on the mobile phone because the phone gets slightly warm while playing.

Coming on to its battery life, the Vivo V1Max does manage to stay awake for a long duration. With 2,720 mAh battery inside it, we did get between 22 to 24 hours after a full charge (under nominal use).We tested the phone out with AnTuTu Benchmark and it managed a score of 35,216 points, which puts in the upper side of the pack.

Verdict

The Vivo V1Max is an all-rounder, which performs extremely well with most tasks. It has really good voice quality and a user can easily hear stuff without any problem. We did like the looks and the stylish design of the phone. The smartphone has minimum of bloatware, which is also appreciable. The Vivo V1Max can be picked up for Rs 21,980.

Pros

  • Good audio performance
  • Great HD screen
  • Neat design

Cons

  • Non-removable battery
  • Gets heated up while playing games

Bose brings its new SoundTrue Ultra in-ear headphones to India at Rs 11,138

Bose has its premium range of headphones built for the upper class. Today they have launched yet another classy set of in-ear headphones that support noise cancellation. Called the SountTrue Ultra, these headphones are designed to give superior audio quality and comfort to the users.

“We’re known for our active noise cancellation, but the SoundTrue Ultra headphones reduce noise passively,” said Bernice Cramer, general manager of Bose Wireless Headphones. “Noise-isolating headphones have typically come with all kinds of trade-offs. They’ve required you to push an earbud deep in your ear, and that compromises how your music sounds and how you feel when they’re on. So, we designed something better. SoundTrue Ultra headphones reduce noise through a soft, proprietary seal and sound great. And they’re so secure, you won’t worry about them falling out, and you won’t want to take them out, either.”

These headphones come in two colours — charcoal and frost. Users can easily wear them for long duration without any discomfort.  By the looks of it, Bose does have another winner at hand. However, price is a major factor at this level. Where Plantronics and other brands are providing similar headphones at much cheaper rates, it could be a task for Bose to quickly move units.

The users also get 64GB of internal memory to store files. Over that, there is the option to add up to a 128GB microSD card where users can store additional files.

Other features include Accelerometer, Proximity, Ambient light, Photo / Video Editor, MMS and Email. The smartphone also offers Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi, GPS, dual-SIM support, 4G LTE and 3G on connectivity front.

The primary camera of ASUS Zenfone 2 Deluxe can capture 13-megapixel still image. For selfies, there is a 5-megapixel front camera. The camera captures very decent pictures. We loved the pictures this phone could take in well lit rooms and outdoors. The rear camera can autofocus and it also comes with dual-LED dual-tone flash. The dual tone flash helps in taking pictures with natural colours and the ones on this phone do a good job in keeping the colours intact.

On the interface front Games, music apps and video galleries ran extremely well. But, the mobile phone heats up really fast, while gaming or watching a movie. We faced no problems when it came the audio and call quality on the ASUS Zenfone 2 Deluxe. Screen, image and video quality is also quite nice.

Moving on to its battery life, the ASUS Zenfone 2 Deluxe does not manage to stay awake for a long duration. With 3,000 mAh battery inside it, it worked for 18 hours after a full charge (under nominal use). We tested the phone out with AnTuTu Benchmark and it managed a score of 41,085 points, which puts it up with all the big players.

Verdict

ASUS Zenfone 2 Deluxe is one of the most premium phones out there around the 20K budget. The voice quality is very good and the user can easily hear the other person. We did like the looks and the stylish design of the phone, the diamond shaped back pattern works for us. It has the latest Android Lollipop operating system based on ZenUI. The ASUS Zenfone 2 Deluxe can be picked up for Rs 19,999 and this phone is a steal at this price.

Pros

  • Quite Affordable

Apple launches iPhone 6s and 6s Plus along with other announcements. Should you buy them right now?

0

The wait is over and after numerous rumours and leaked pictures, the new iPhone 6s and 6s Plus get revealed. Yesterday night Apple showcased the phones officially along with a slew of announcements and launches.

Apple iPhone 6s and 6S Plus

These are the top of the line products from Apple. The phones will start the sales on 25 September in 130 countries around the world. One can pre-order the device on 12 September. The dollar price of the phones has been revealed and nothing has been said about the Indian price. In India it will be as high as the iPhone 6 if not more. The iPhone 6s starts at $299 and 6s Plus starts from $399 for the 16 GB models.

On the tech specs front the iPhone 6s has 4.7-inch Retina HD 3D touchscreen with a resolution of 1334 x 750. While the iPhone 6S plus has a 5.5-inch retina display that supports 1920 x 1080 pixels resolution. Both the phones have A9 chip 64 bit architecture inside them. A 12 MP rear camera comes on them with optical stabilisation and true tone flash. These can capture 4K resolution videos at 30 FPS.  The front has 5 MP camera to Face Time. Finger print sensor gets housed in the home button on these phones.

Both have the latest iOS 9 operating system and look very similar to the previous generation. 7000 series of aerospace industry aluminium is used to build these phones, but that still does not justify the already seen looks.

So should one buy it in India?

Well our recommendation is to wait for a price drop or two. These phones will come at the price that is ridiculously high and will definitely burn a hole in the pocket. The specs do not justify an immediate buy as there are plenty of other phones in the market with higher specs. Also, then there is case of old looks. Why buy a premium phone that looks very similar to its predecessor.

Other announcements

The iPad Pro also gets launched alongside the iPhones. This tablet has a 12.9-inch retina display and is just 6.9 mm thick. An A9 chip comes on board and apple claims that the device can stay awake for 10 hours. Built for professional use the Apple iPad Pro weighs 713 grams and the users can pick up the stylus pen or the keyboard attachment as well (for an extra amount). The iPad Pro starts from $799 for the 32 GB Wi-Fi only model.

Other announcements include the launch of Apple watchOS 2 for its smartwatch users. iOS 9 is now available to download for previous Apple devices and iPad mini 4 also gets launched, which has a price tag of $ 399.
