Update the camera app

Google Pixel 6a Review: Arguably the best mid-range smartphone you can buy
The recently launched Google Pixel 6a finds itself in a unique position where it’s battling low-cost flagship alternatives like the iPhone SE, Samsung Galaxy A73, and the OnePlus 10T and also value-for-money smartphones like the Reno8 Pro. Over the years, Google Pixel’s A-series has carved out a niche audience for itself, offering features that you’d typically get in a flagship while making compromises on some fronts to keep the price down.  The decision-making in this regard is quite balanced, with Google knowing exactly which features are non-negotiable for the consumers and where it can hold back a few things as the distinguishing factor for the flagship. With this in mind, we took a close look at the Google Pixel 6a, using it for almost a week and putting it through different tests. So, how did it fare? Google Pixel 6a review: Design and Display

The Google Pixel 6a comes in a compact white box which contains the handset, charging cable, an OTG adapter, a SIM ejector tool, and some reading material in a supplementary box with Google Tensor branding. Right off the bat, you’ll notice there is no charger inside the box, which is one of the few corners Google has cut to keep the price down. It is a pretty disappointing trend that slowly seems to be seeping into the mid-range category of smartphones as well.  Google Pixel 6a review: Design and Display Moving on, the smartphone is pretty compact, with dimensions of 152.2 x 71.8 x 8.9 mm (5.99 x 2.83 x 0.35 in). It gets a Gorilla Glass 3 front protection and a back that Google describes as a ‘3D thermoformed composite back’. It looks like plastic, feels like plastic – and no points for guessing – it is plastic. This is a stark departure from the Gorilla Glass 6 back on the other flagships.  Holding everything together is an alloy frame with a matte finish on top. While it is evident that Google has gone for some low-cost materials, the phone itself feels quite nice to hold, as the matte finished frame provides a nice contrasting texture to the glossy back. Google Pixel 6a review: Design and Display The Pixel 6a looks more or less the same as its flagship counterpart, receiving the signature Pixel design. The camera band at the back houses the dual lens setup along with the dual-LED flash. The band itself separates the two colour tones and slightly protrudes outwards (but not as much as Pixel 6). We used the chalk colour variant, and the section above the camera band was a deeper, greyish colour.  While the glossy back has a tendency to attract fingerprints, they were barely noticeable in the Chalk variant. On the front, the 6.1-inch OLED display houses the selfie camera in a punch-hole cutout and is surrounded by very thin bezels. The phone is rated IP67 for dust and water resistance. On the right side, you’ll find the power button and the volume rocker keys. The charging port along with the primary speaker makes its way to the bottom, and the secondary speaker goes on top. On the bottom left side lies the solitary SIM tray.  Google Pixel 6a review: Design and Display One strange thing we noticed here was the placement of the power button above the volume rocker. Usually while handling the volume, the natural reflex is to go for the topmost button. We had to correct ourselves quite a bit before we got used to the new arrangement.  Moving to the 6.1-inch OLED HDR display, the primary concern that most people have is the refresh rate being capped at 60Hz. For the price of Rs 43,999, a 60Hz display seems to be an unreasonable tradeoff on paper, but after using the phone we did not have any complaints.  The touch response is exceptionally fluid, and the overall scrolling experience is smoother than you expect it to be, with Google’s superior haptic feedback taking it to another level. Google has paid great attention to detail and made sound choices on where to provide the appropriate haptic triggers so that it doesn’t get annoying.  One thing we liked was the little vibration that triggers upon flicking through apps on the app manager window. It is features like this that make compact smartphones attractive to buyers and Google has nailed it with the Pixel 6a.  If you’re concerned about what effect the 60Hz refresh rate will have on the gaming performance, keep reading further as we will address it in detail later on in the review. The display is bright enough to be legible in outdoor surroundings during the daytime. Indoors, we had to adjust the brightness level a bit higher than what is typically required on other smartphones, but we can’t complain much about that.  The OLED display produces deep contrasting colours which aren’t overly saturated. We binged content on YouTube and watched ‘Lost in Translation’ on Pixel 6a, and the phone’s display did justice to the subtleties presented by the colour palate, the overall experience being quite enjoyable.  The 83% screen-to-body ratio is good enough to provide a distraction-free visual experience. The dual speakers produce a decent audio output, although a slight distortion was noticeable at maximum volume. The Pixel 6a sports a new improved in-display fingerprint sensor, which still isn’t as fast as its peers, but matches the base expectations we had for it. Earlier in July, a security flaw let anyone unlock the Pixel 6a with their fingerprint, but Google quickly patched it with an update. 

Google Pixel 6a review: Performance and Cameras

The Google Pixel 6a is available in a single storage and RAM configuration of 128GB + 6GB. It does not offer expandable storage, with no memory card slot present. The phone is powered by Google’s Tensor chipset which also features on the flagship offering. Seeing the success that the iPhone SE enjoyed with the presence of the A15 Bionic chipset, excluding the Tensor processor on the 6a would have been a massive miss from Google. Compared to its other Android counterparts in this bracket, the Tensor chipset outperforms the Exynos 1280 and matches the Snapdragon 778G in performance. We ran the Geekbench 5 test on the Pixel 6a and it had an impressive single core score of 1,044 points, outperforming the likes of Samsung Galaxy S21+ and S21 Ultra. The multi-core test saw the Pixel 6a scoring 2637 points. You can see the results in the picture below. Geekbench 5 test Switching between multiple apps is a breeze. Even with half a dozen apps running in the background, none of them required reloading. The apps load at a lightning-fast speed and, coupled with fluid scrolling, the overall phone browsing experience is as good as it gets.  The Pixel 6a comes with the Android 12 OS, which you can now upgrade to Android 13. The MaterialYou theme has been further expanded with the Android 13 update, giving you greater control over how your phone looks. The Pixel 6a offers a few unique features too, like Live Transcribe and Magic Eraser, the latter being a fun photo editing tool. We used Magic Eraser quite a bit and it does well to hide small unwanted objects from your pictures, but still struggles to do an effective job of getting rid of the wires and electric poles. The battery performance of the Pixel 6a is quite disappointing and leaves a lot more to be desired. Firstly, charging the device to 100% can take quite a bit of time. We know that Pixels don’t work efficiently with every power adapter, but we tried a few different ones and the charging speed still failed to impress. The only time we could charge it in one go was when we plugged it in overnight.  During the day when you need to take your phone everywhere you go, keeping your phone on charge for more than an hour can be impractical at times, especially if you only plug in your phone when it’s totally drained of battery. The battery performance, on the other hand, is quite satisfactory, and on a day of moderate usage, we were still left with almost 30% charge. Finally, we put the Pixel 6a to the gaming test and played Garena Free Fire Max, Apex Legends, and Call of Duty Mobile on it. After an hour of playing Free Fire Max, there was no significant overheating, and we could’ve easily gone further. But more graphically demanding games like Apex Legends and Call of Duty Mobile really tested the limits of the Pixel 6s, and it heated up after 30-minute sessions.  That is still a decent performance and one that won’t deter any gaming fans from buying the smartphone. The 60Hz display holds up well too, as we didn’t experience any frame drops, and the overall touch response was quite satisfactory. The on-display controls are receptive to even the lightest touches, and the 60Hz refresh rate does not diminish the gaming experience in any way.  While the gaming performance may be a mixed bag, the camera unit on the Google Pixel 6s is easily one of the best we’ve seen in the mid-range category. We tested the camera in different conditions, both outdoors and indoors, and it amazed us every single time. The camera unit undergoes one change from the Pixel 5a – the 16MP ultrawide lens has been replaced with a 12MP lens. But the latter gets a bigger sensor which lets in more light, resulting in better pictures. The 12MP primary shooter remains the same. In bright outdoor conditions, the Pixel 6a took vibrant images, with the colours neatly balanced without any oversaturation. The pictures we took outside managed to capture the sky efficiently, without letting the foreground get washed out. Every minute detail was recorded impeccably in the pictures, with major credit for that going to the Tensor processor which pulls its weight in the image processing. Portrait mode works fine as well, with the camera being able to incorporate the entire subject without blurring the edges.

Photography at night does not present any hurdles either, as the night mode handles the low-light conditions extremely well, smoothening any grain from the images and lighting up the subject without making it look too unnatural. Pictures of the night sky came out way better than expected, even though the camera takes some time to click the pictures and then some more to process the image.

The 8MP selfie camera records a good amount of detail and retains the texture in your selfies. The processor turns up the contrast in the resulting images, but other than that, the camera works pretty well. You can record 1080p videos at 30fps from the selfie camera. Verdict

At Rs 43,000, the Google Pixel 6a is possibly the best phone you can buy in the price bracket. For casual users that want their smartphone to have a good camera and unique looks, the Pixel 6a is a no-brainer. Google has made some tradeoffs that bring down the cost of the phone, but they all work out well, in our opinion. The only downside would be the battery, which takes a long time to charge. But it can easily last a day, so if you’re someone that charges their phone overnight, it won’t be a significant issue.

Only eight months have passed since the Vivo V23 Pro was introduced in India, and the Vivo V25 Pro is already here as its successor. There aren’t many improvements over the old model with this one, however the ones that are there make it modern. It now has a larger battery, improved camera features, and a new colour-changing design that was initially seen on the V23 Pro. We’ve spent a couple of days with this phone and here is our detailed review of the Vivo V25 Pro.

Vivo V25 Pro Review: Design and Display

The V-Series from Vivo is highly known for both its aesthetic appeal and advanced photography capabilities. The company makes an effort to introduce something fresh with each new iteration. However, ever since Nothing Phone 1 (Review) entered the market it is already generating a lot of talk among tech enthusiasts with its groundbreaking design, which is undoubtedly cutting edge, good gaming performance, and many other features. Vivo recently released the Vivo V25 Pro in the market at a comparable price range.  Vivo V25 Pro Review: Design and Display Because it now has a larger battery capacity, the V23 Pro is no longer as light and is even on the heavier side compared to its predecessor. More specifically, the Vivo V25 Pro’s rear panel has a colour-changing anti-glare glass that changes colour when exposed to sunlight, and also adds a bit of weight. It comes in a single Sailing Blue finish. It should be noted that the Vivo V23 Pro was the device that initially featured the colour-changing design concept (review). Due to the matte texture on the back panel, scratches and fingerprints are actually resisted. Vivo V25 Pro Review: Design and Display Unlike its predecessor, the phone’s camera module looks relatively ordinary. Most modern smartphones have camera modules that are square in shape and have a very similar appearance. The medium-sized display notch that houses the two selfie cameras on the V23 Pro was one element that seemed a little old.  In order to make it look much easier on the eye and less distracting, Vivo has now reduced that number to one and housed it into a hole-punch hole. A secondary noise-cancelling microphone is located on the frame’s top, and the power and volume rocker buttons are located on the frame’s right. On the phone’s bottom are a SIM tray, a type-c port, and a speaker grille. Vivo V25 Pro Review in India The Vivo V25 Pro does not have an IP rating, which was also lacking with the previous version and is something we would not reasonably anticipate from a phone in this price bracket. The 6.56-inch FHD+ 3D Curved AMOLED display on the Vivo V25 Pro is an improvement over the 90Hz panel on the V23 Pro, offering a touch sampling rate of 300Hz and a high refresh rate of 120Hz for an improved viewing and browsing experience. It also supports 100% of the DCI-P3 broad colour gamut and a contrast ratio of 6,000,000:1 to provide a more immersive viewing experience. Along with that, it has HDR 10+, Netflix HDR, and SGS Low Blue Light certifications. Vivo V25 Pro Review in India A very responsive in-display fingerprint sensor and a very elegant design are both features of the display. Even though it has a fairly wide display, holding it in your hand is really pleasant. It has curved edges and a bezel-free display. We really enjoyed using this phone because it has an edge-to-edge screen and the videos have great graphics, colours, and contrast. It provides great, sharp, vibrant pictures and even supports HDR on YouTube and Netflix. The range of viewing angles is unlimited. As a result, using the gadget gives you a great multimedia experience. When used outdoors or in intense sunshine, the phone’s display can reach a maximum brightness of 1300 nits and everything is very legible. Although you can choose a refresh rate of 60Hz or 120Hz in the display settings, Smart Switch is turned on by default. The processor in this phone is really quick and can handle everything, therefore we used the phone at 120Hz. The curved display makes the phone look more luxurious. We anticipated stereo speakers, but there is only one bottom-firing speaker. However, it supports Hi-Res audio, has good sound quality, and is loud.

Vivo V25 Pro’s software is already pre-installed with Funtouch OS 12, which is based on Android 12. One thing to keep in mind is that although there is a lot of bloatware, you can remove it. In our tests, it looked impressive, and we used the 8GB RAM with 128GB storage configuration. There is also a RAM boost option that gives you 8 GB of additional virtual RAM, bringing the total amount of virtual RAM to 16GB (including the 8GB of physical RAM). We played Call of Duty at its highest settings and were really pleased with how it performed. While 90FPS may also be used to play PUBG New State, it did so quite successfully. However, the curved display may cause some unintentional touches, but the combination of the 300Hz touch sampling rate and the 120Hz refresh rate raises the bar for gaming. Additionally, we had no thermal problems, jitters, frame dropouts, or slowdowns with this phone. In terms of connectivity, you get eight 5G bands to support, dual 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi calling support and more. We’ll now discuss the Cameras, which is the review’s second-most crucial section in our honest opinion. Yes, the Vivo V-Series is a camera-focused line of smartphones, so whatever camera enhancements you get should be thoroughly tested. Previously, the V23 primary camera, which had a resolution of 108 megapixels, has been dropped to 64 megapixels, but it now incorporates optical image stabilisation (OIS). The 2-megapixel macro camera and 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera appear to be the same as before. The V25 Pro’s 32-megapixel selfie camera is a sort of drop from the 50-megapixel one on the V23 Pro. Vivo V25 Pro Review in India The primary sensor captures some detailed images with good sharpness levels in daylight, which are quite noticeable when zooming in. Despite a tendency to oversaturate the sky colours, the colours are generally nice. There is nothing wrong with the dynamic range, and it is also good. Vivo V25 Pro in India Moving on to the 8MP ultra-wide sensor, the photographs contain decent detail but, obviously, just acceptable levels of sharpness for an 8MP sensor. The corners are soft and lack detail. While the colours are pleasantly accurate and nearly on par with those of a primary sensor. Regarding the close-up photos in this post, you can notice good details and the images are sharp. The primary camera can take quality pictures, thus the colours are also fairly true and appear amazing. While the 2MP sensor produces dull-looking macro photographs, the images have been fine-tuned to make them look passable, despite the fact that the sensor as a whole is not ideal for macro photography.

The portraits you see here are well-done; the skin tones, sharpness, and details are all excellent. While colours are a little vibrant, edge detection is also done well. There are several choices to experiment with when using the portrait setting, including bokeh, beauty mode, and others. For portraits, the night mode also appears to be wonderful and reliable. When zoomed in, low-light indoor photographs have less noise and are more or less clear. However, when the night mode is activated in extremely low light levels, you can see fine details while the noise is somewhat tamed, but the edges appear a bit fuzzy and soft. Moving on to the selfie camera, the 32MP front sensor does a commendable job, with good sharpness and details. The skin tone also appears to be natural. Although night mode is also available for selfies, low-light selfies also work well. Selfies can be taken in portrait mode, which is also an option and does a respectable job overall. Vivo V25 Pro Review: A good camera-centric smartphone The Vivo V25 Pro can capture videos in 4K at 60 frames per second without stabilisation. Therefore, even if the quality is superb, this mode is not advised for recording moving footage. With OIS and EIS, you can also shoot in 4K at 30 frames per second, and the results are fairly consistent and attractive. The video quality at 1080p@60fps is excellent, and the colours and sharpness are both excellent. EIS is supported in 1080p@30fps, and slow motion is also an option. Stabilised video recording at the night is also an option. The battery’s capacity has increased from 4,300mAh in the V23 Pro to 4,830mAh, which is excellent to have because the V23 Pro’s battery life was lacking when used often. The charging, which has increased from 44W to 66W, is another improvement.

Verdict

Without a doubt, we would claim that the Vivo V25 Pro is a stunning and camera-focused smartphone. The curved display, colour-changing design, and 66W fast charging are a few small improvements. The IP certification, stereo speakers, and 3.5mm jack are all missing, though. Both the front and back cameras perform brilliantly. The daylight captures turned out quite great, and the subsequent low light experience is also quite good. Many do not know but Mivi makes many audio devices including headphones, speakers and sound bars in India. Out of its latest soundbar range, we got the Mivi Fort S24 mini soundbar over for an assessment. We spent 2 weeks with the device, and this is what we think of the new less expensive sound bar.

Mivi Fort S24 mini soundbar review: Design

As the name suggests this soundbar is not a full-fledged 3-4 feet long sound bar, but is a compact 14-inch sound bar for flat-screen TVs. The front is dominated by a mesh cloth panel with silver accents on the sides and the Mivi branding upfront. This hides 4 speaker array behind it. The rest of the Mivi Fort S24 mini sound bar is made up of hard plastic which gives it a bit of sturdiness. On top of the machine, users get a couple of buttons. These include play/pause, volume up and down, and mode keys. The Mode buttons enable the users to switch between FM, Bluetooth etc modes. A microphone can also be found on the top that lets users speak to voice assistants like Google Assistant. Spin it around and you will see the power button as well as other ports. The ports include a microSD card slot, USB A, USB Type-C for charging and auxiliary. Two large rubber feet are given at the bottom for Mivi Fort S24 mini sound bar to sit tight on any type of surface. The total weight of the machine is 1.2Kg. Mivi Fort S24 mini soundbar review: Performance

Coming to how the Mivi Fort S24 mini soundbar performs in real life, we found it to be pretty decent for the price it is offered at. When we put it to the test with a 43-inch smart TV in a large hall setup it did gave us a very good sound experience till 80-85% of the volume levels. Go beyond 90 then the sound starts to crack a bit. However, under 80% the 24W four-speaker array provides very admirable highs, mids and bass. Lows could have been better. Also, since it is a Bluetooth sound bar, it can also be used as a stand-alone BT speaker without the TV. We played sports, news, regular K-drama and songs on YouTube using it and it became our preferred choice. Since most TVs have downward-firing speakers between 10-20W RMS, the Mivi Fort S24 mini soundbar provides 24W RMS front-firing audio. This is better for large rooms as you get a better resonance. Connecting it using any TV that has BT or 3.5mm aux capability is easy. However, we would have loved it even more if there was a remote supplied with it for switching the modes etc. In the box, users also get a USB charging cable but not a charger. Coming to its battery life, the company claims that it can last for over 6 hours. However, in our tests, it ran over just 5 hours. This is still ok, as you would keep the charger connected to it when watching TV for long periods. Audio from various devices like the microSD card, mobile, aux and USB pen drive is supported. Verdict

Overall, for the price of Rs 1,799 the Mivi Fort S24 mini soundbar is quite good. You get a premium finish, very decent sound and better-quality plastics all over. If you are in the market looking for an inexpensive sound option for your low-sounding TV, you should look at this sound bar.

So how does the battery capacity of the new iPhone 14 series measure up against its predecessors? It retains the A15 Bionic chipset, so the power efficiency of the processor will remain the same. But users can expect a slightly longer battery life with the new entry-level iPhone 14. With fast charging, 50% of the battery can be replenished in 30 minutes. 15W Magsafe wireless charging and 7.5W Qi magnetic fast wireless charging has also been made available. 

iPhone 14 Plus

iPhone 14 Plus Battery Capacity: 4,325 mAh (16.68 Wh) Apple claims the iPhone 14 Plus to have the largest battery capacity in the entire iPhone 14 lineup. The 14 Plus is able to accommodate a larger battery due to its larger size. However, it still comes with an A15 Bionic chipset, which is quite an efficient processor but its power handling will definitely be overshadowed by the A16 Bionic chip on the Pro models. So, on paper, the iPhone 14 Plus may have a bigger battery than the Pro Max, but the latter will certainly have better battery life and performance due to the latest chipset.

iPhone 14 Pro

iPhone 14 Plus Battery Capacity: 3,200 mAh (12.38 Wh) iPhone 13 Pro battery capacity: 3,095 mAh (11.97Wh) The iPhone 14 Pro sees a big bump in battery capacity compared to its predecessor, but it is still smaller than the non-pro versions. It’ll be interesting to see how well the A16 Bionic processor manages the battery efficiency, and if it can make the smaller battery last longer than the non-pro versions (which run on the A15 Bionic chipset). No matter what the difference is, the iPhone 14 Pro will still easily last a day on a full charge. 

iPhone 14 Pro Max

iPhone 14 Pro Max Battery Capacity: 4,323 mAh (16.68 Wh) iPhone 13 Pro Max battery capacity: 4,352 mAh (16.75 Wh) Similar to the iPhone 14 Pro, the flagship Pro Max also comes with a smaller battery than its previous iteration. Out of the current lineup, Apple claims the iPhone 14 Plus to have the longest battery life, but experts claim the Pro Max will retain its title of being the battery king. This is largely due to the presence of the A16 Bionic chipset that will certainly do its part in effective handling and power efficiency. The ProMotion display is equipped to reduce the refresh rate for tasks that don’t require to use it at its full capacity. Motorola Edge Ultra 30 and Edge 30 Fusion are scheduled to launch in India on September 13. The company has revealed that both devices will be available for purchase via Flipkart. Prior to coming to India the smartphone was first introduced in a few markets so we are already aware of its specifications. The Ultra would feature a 200 MP triple back camera configuration. It will come equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC with 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM. The Motorola Edge 30 Ultra and Edge 30 Fusion will debut in India on September 13 according to the smartphone company’s Twitter announcement. The company has also stated that both phones will be sold in retail establishments like Flipkart.

Motorola Edge 30 Ultra features a full-HD+ 6.67-inch pOLED display with 1,080×2,400 pixels of resolution. India will soon get the Vivo V25 5G, according to the Chinese manufacturer. The device’s India launch is set to take place on September 15. Ahead of the official release the company has also created a dedicated microsite on Flipkart. Vivo has hinted at a handful of the next smartphone’s features. As per the microsite, the phone will come with a 50-megapixel selfie camera and a back panel made of fluorite AG glass, which changes colour. Vivo took to Twitter to announce the launch date for Vivo V25 5G for India. The device is scheduled to launch in India on September 15 at 12 noon. The company in its announcement said, “Experience the magical world of Vivo V25. A phone that provides you with delightful experiences. Launching on 15th Sept at 12 PM. Block your date & get ready to #DelightEveryMoment.” The device is also confirmed to be available for purchase via Flipkart. A webpage on Flipkart states that the Vivo V25 5G smartphone would be available in Black and Blue and will have a fluorite AG glass back panel that changes colour. Moreover, the display will feature a waterdrop notch to house a 50-megapixel selfie camera with autofocus. The smartphone will have a 64-megapixel triple rear camera setup with Bokeh Flare Portrait and optical image stabilisation, according to the Vivo India website (OIS). Additionally, a MediaTek Dimensity 900 SoC is hinted at for the Vivo V25 5G. Moreover, the phone will include Extended RAM, which enables it to employ up to 8GB of available storage. The smartphone is likely to include a 64-megapixel primary sensor in addition to an 8-megapixel wide-angle and a 2-megapixel macro camera. Thailand already has the Vivo V25 5G. The MediaTek Dimensity 900 chipset powers the device. It will carry up to 12GB of RAM and up to 256 GB of storage.
