Google takes on Zoom by introducing custom background feature for its Meet users

In what seems to measure to step up its competition against Zoom, Google has now enabled its Meet users to replace their background with an image in Google Meet. The users can either select Google’s hand-picked images that comprises of office spaces, landscapes, and abstract backgrounds, or upload their own image. Currently, this feature works on ChromeOS and on the Chrome browser on Windows and Mac desktop devices. However, the support on Meet mobile apps will be introduced in days ahead.

Custom backgrounds not only help users hide their surroundings, but can even enable them to showcase their personality. “We recently launched the ability to filter out disruptive background noise and blur your background in Google Meet. Together, these features reduce audio and visual distractions, and help ensure more productive meetings.

According to Google Workspace team, “There will be no admin control for this feature. Admin controls to select which organizational units can use custom and preset backgrounds for meetings they organize will be introduced later this year.”

Wondering how to change your background on Google Meet if you are using a computer? Well, the tech giant has revealed, “Users who join the video call while not logged into a Google account and users which need to knock to get admitted, can only change their background once in the video call. Users who join a G Suite for Education video call can’t select their own background images.”

Therefore, to customize the background before a video call on Google Meet via computer

  1. Go to Google Meet and then select a meeting
  2. On the bottom right of your self view, click Change Background
  3. To completely blur your background, click Blur your background
  4. To slightly blur your background, click Slightly blur your background
  5. To select a pre-uploaded background, click a background
  6. To upload your own image for your background, click Add Add
  7. Click Join Now

And to change the background on computer during a video call, click on more on the bottom right > now, tap on Change background and select any of the following options:

  1. To completely blur your background, click Blur your background
  2. To slightly blur your background, click slightly blur your background
  3. To select a pre-uploaded background, click a background
  4. To upload your own image for your background, click Add Add

Mind you! Changing your background may slow down the computer. If you will turn off this feature, other apps can run faster on the computer.

On the other hand, Android users must note that this feature to replace the background on Google Meet app with an image is currently not available on mobile. If you wish to customize the background before a video call, simply open the Meet app and then select a meeting. Before you join, tap Blur your background to turn blur on and off. This is located on the bottom of your self-view and click on Join Now.

And to change the background on an Android device during a video call, simply tap the screen to see the self-view. Once self-view is visible, tap Blur your background to turn blur on and off. It must be noted that blurring your background may increase your battery usage. You may want to turn it off if your battery is low.

Lastly, Google has also listed the steps that an iPhone or iPad user has to follow to change the background before as well as during the call. Check it out:

Before a video call 

  1. Open the Meet app and then select a meeting
  2. Before you join, on the bottom of your self-view, tap blur your background to turn blur on and off
  3. Click Join Now

During a video call

  1. Tap the screen to see the self-view
  2. On your self-view, tap blur your background to turn blur on and off
  3. However, blurring your background may increase your battery usage

Based on the same Xe-LP micro-architecture used for Intel Iris Xe graphics in 11th Gen Intel Core mobile processors, Intel has now launched Intel Iris Xe MAX graphics that has been designed for thin-and-light laptops. It is Intel’s first Xe-based discrete graphics processing unit (GPU) as part of the company’s strategy to enter the discrete graphics market. It also features Intel Deep Link technology as part of Intel Adaptix, support PCIe Gen 4 and caters to an emerging need for content creation performance in thin-and-light laptops.

In order to redefine the role of discrete graphics in thin-and-light laptops, Roger Chandler, vice president and general manager of Client XPU Product and Solutions in the Intel Architecture, Graphics and Software Group, said, “Iris Xe MAX graphics and Intel® Deep Link technology serve as examples of the kind of platform-level innovation that Intel plans to bring to market in the future as we execute to our scalable Xe roadmap.”

Samsung W21 5G foldable phone to launch on November 4

Samsung W21 5G is the alleged foldable smartphone which is now tipped to launch in India on November 4. The device is speculated to be introduced in China and is said to be similar to Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 which was launched in China only. The only difference between both the devices is that the company has collaborated with China Telecom carrier for 5G connectivity for the upcoming device. While the new foldable phone will not be powered by Snapdragon 855 SoC instead it will equip Qualcomm Snapdragon 855+ SoC to offer 5G connectivity.  The device has also appeared on TENNA revealing all the key specifications of the phone.

According to a tipster, Samsung W21 5G is speculated to hit the shelves on November 4 in China as the company’s next foldable device. The tipster has revealed this information by sharing a launch poster that suggested the launch event to begin at 7.30 pm local time and 3 PM IST. Also, it will be available in a golden colour finish. As of now, there is no information with regard to the pricing of the foldable device but the South Korean giant has tied up with China Telecom carrier for 5G connectivity. 

Speaking of the specification Samsung W21 5G is said to be sharing similarities with Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 that arrived in China. The alleged phone was also spotted listed on the Chinese regulatory TENAA bearing a model number SM-W2021. According to the listing, the smartphone will feature a 7.53-inch main display with 1,768×2,208 pixels of resolution and a 6.23-inch cover display with 816×2,260 pixels of resolution. The phone is suggested to be powered by Snapdragon 865+ processor with 12GB RAM and 512GB internal storage and will run Android 10 OS out of the box.

Samsung W21 5G might also include a three 12-megapixel camera setup set up on the back of the phone. It is suggested to come with a 12-megapixel selfie camera. As per the listing, the upcoming phone will also feature an in-display fingerprint sensor. It may also carry a dual-cell battery, a 2,090mAh and a 2,160mAh.

Samsung plans to expand its price range of foldable smartphones, Galaxy Z Fold 3 expected to come with an S Pen compartment

Samsung is now planning to make its foldable phones more accessible by offering them in a wider price range. According to a report, the company thinks to provide its premium foldable devices at an affordable price. The company has shared its plans at the conference for this quarter and will continues to strengthen its portfolio in the area in 2021 as foldable smartphones account for little in total smartphone sales in 2021. Also, the next Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 will have an S Pen compartment similar to Galaxy Note 20 series.

For the fourth quarter of 2020, the company is expecting sales and profitability to both drops compared to the third quarter due to intensified competition among competitions from year’s end sales. The company posted 1.56 trillion won in operating profits, which soared by 1 trillion won compared to a year ago which is said to be the best quarterly performance since Q2 of 2016. The South Korean tech giant said pent up demand following the COVID-19 pandemic spurred growth, the report said.

On the other hand, the alleged Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 is expected to come with an S Pen. As per a report, the South Korean giant has also filed a patent that defines the details of the company’s plan to make the upcoming device more compatible with the S Pen.

In addition to this, the sketches also show Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 with a sperate slot for the S Pen inside the left folding panel that fits in from the top to the bottom right. Which looks similar to the Samsung Galaxy Note 20.

The Addition of the S Pen will be an added value while ensuring more accuracy and productivity. The report says, “In April this year, Samsung Electronics filed for a patent with the WIPO (World Intellectual Property Office). The patent was published today, October 29, 2020. The 56-page documentation describes in detail how Samsung wants to make future foldable smartphones compatible with a stylus pen.”

The patent images describe an added compartment to the bottom right side of the folding phone to store the S Pen. In addition to this, Jermaine Smit earlier this year also displayed a series of concept renders of a Galaxy Fold smartphone with S Pen, these 3D renders also go in line with the latest patent. While the S Pen will share similar dimensions to Note 20.

While another report suggests ‘Electromagnetic resonance’ (EMR) technology for the foldable phone however it is an expensive solution that would considerably thicken the Ultra-Thin Glass (UTG) layer, from 30 micrometers to 60 micrometers. This would improve the S Pen’s touch sensitivity.

The company will take a while before the Samsung Z Fold 3 is officially launched. It might consider it to launch in August 2021. Till then you can take the information with a grain of sale as possible the company might have also changed its mind in the meantime.

LG K92 5G ready phone launched at an affordable price

The South Korean electronic brand has introduced a new smartphone in the market. The company has launched an affordable 5G smartphone LG K92 5G. The key highlights of the device include a 64-megapixel quad rear camera setup, 4,000mAh battery and is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 690. The device features a hole-punch display with a side-mounted fingerprint sensor.

LG K92 5G has been introduced with a price tag of $359 that translates to Rs 26,600 for the single 6GB RAM with a 128GB storage variant. The device will be available in Titan Gray reflective accents. It will go on sale from November 6 via AT&T and Cricket Wireless while US Cellular will begin selling starting November 19.

Speaking of the specifications, LG K92 5G is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 690 SoC and will run on the Android 10 operating system. The device will be offered in a single 6GB of RAM with 128GB of internal storage. The storage can be expanded up to 2TB using a microSD card. The new 5G phone features a 6.7-inch full-HD+ hole-punch display to house a selfie sensor.

In terms of imaging, LG K92 5G comes with a square-shaped quad-camera setup that includes a 64-megapixel primary sensor with f/1.78 aperture and an 81-degree field of view. In addition to this, there is a 5-megapixel ultra-wide-angle sensor with f/2.2 aperture and 115-degree field of view, a 2-megapixel depth sensor with f/2.4 aperture as well as a 2-megapixel macro with f/2.4 aperture. On the front the mobile phone sports a 16-megapixel sensor with a 77-degree field of view and f/2.0 aperture for taking selfies and video calling.

In terms of connectivity, the smartphone includes Wi-Fi 802.11 ac, NFC, Bluetooth 5.1, and USB Type-C port for charging. The LG K92 5G comes with a 4,000mAh battery. The fingerprint scanner is given on the right side of the phone. In addition to this the 5G ready phone is MIL-STD-810G compliant

Vivo to discontinue Funtouch OS, to be replaced with Origin OS: Report

Soon Vivo’s custom skin Funtouch OS is going to be replaced by Origin OS. At the moment all its latest devices run FunTouch OS  11 that offers new features and customisations. The new development has been revealed by a report which suggests the new Origin OS is most likely to be announced at the Vivo Developer Conference 2020. The new version of Vivo’s custom skin will be offering a new design as well as new features.

According to a report by SeekDevice which cites information from Digital Chat Station Origin OS will be taking place of Vivo’s current Funtouch OS. As per the tipster, the company has also officially confirmed this change via its official WeChat account. The all-new OS, named Origin OS. The company has stated that this will be revealed at the 2020 Vivo developer conference that is going to take place on November 19 in Shenzhen. The Origin OS stands for “Original OS.” This conference will be focusing on the company’s new custom OS, apps, IoT, games and others.

The report further suggests the upcoming OS will bring the best Android UI customizations. Also, it is now confirmed that Vivo will release any new hardware but the company is expected to launch the Vivo X60 series with the debut of Origin OS later next month in November or in December.

It should be noted that this is not the first time the company will rebrand its custom skin. Last year also the company dropped its plan of replacing FunTouch OS with Jovi OS after multiple consultations with its other team members. And the users have to continue using FunTouch OS rather than JoviOS. And in place, the company launched the new version of FunTouch OS 11 this year. However, these are just speculation and can be taken with a pinch of salt.

But this time the company seems to be serious about adopting the new custom skin that will bring visible improvements over the current Funtouch OS.

The upcoming smartphone will have yellow and grey tones that match with the company’s most anticipated upcoming game Cyberpunk 2077.

OnePlus took to the Chinese micro-blogging website Weibo to announce that OnePlus 8T Cyberpunk 2077 Edition is scheduled to launch on November 2 in China. The launch event will kick off at 11.30 am IST. As per the released poster yellow accents on a grey back panel is seen which goes in line with the company’s upcoming game Cyberpunk 2077.

The OnePlus 8T Cyberpunk 2077 Limited Edition will only see changes in the form factor while the specifications are expected to remain the same as the standard model. The device will go with the 6.55-inch flat fluid AMOLED display with 1,080×2,400 pixels of resolution, 91.1 percent screen-to-body ratio and 120hz refresh rate with HDR10+ support. The phone will run Android 11-based OxygenOS 11. The OnePlus 8T Cyberpunk 2077 Limited Edition will be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 SoC. For optics, there will be a quad rear camera set up onboard with a 48-megapixel primary sensor with optical image stabilisation (OIS), a secondary 16-megapixel ultra-wide-angle sensor with a 123-degree field of view, a 5-megapixel macro lens and a 2-megapixel monochrome sensor. While on the front it has a 16-megapixel selfie camera.

The phone will pack a 4,500mAh battery and supports Warp Charge 65. For connectivity it might include 5G, 4G, dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.1, GPS, NFC, Glonass, and a USB Type-C port.

This new software update for the SmartThings app will be available across the world for Galaxy smartphones and tablets running Android 8 or later. Using the latest in BLE and UWB technology, SmartThings Find will make your life less stressful when it comes to searching for misplaced Galaxy devices.

According to Jaeyeon Jung, Vice President and Head of SmartThings Team, Mobile Communications Business at Samsung Electronics: “With the added advantage of using AR in conjunction with maps and sounds to guide you back to your devices, SmartThings Find is a simple and visual solution that will help you easily locate your favorite devices. This is just one example of the new meaningful mobile experiences that UWB technology will bring to people across the world.”

After completing a quick registration process, SmartThings Find service will help you keep more of your Galaxy devices safe through the easy-to-use SmartThings app. Moreover, this can easily help you locate the missing device even if it’s offline. That’s because SmartThings users can now opt in to securely use their Galaxy smartphone or tablet to help others locate their lost devices.

Samsung revealed that SmartThings Find produces a BLE signal that can be received by other devices once a device has been offline for 30 minutes. The company further added,“If you report your device as lost via SmartThings Find, any nearby Galaxy smartphone or tablet that has opted into helping find misplaced devices can alert the Samsung server about its location, which will in turn notify you. All SmartThings Find user data is encrypted and securely protected, ensuring that the device’s location is not revealed to anyone except its owner.”

The South Korea-based tech giant stated that locating your missing device is a breeze with integrated map directions and the ability to “ring” a lost device to find it more quickly. So when you misplace a device, you can simply open SmartThings Find on your smartphone or tablet and select the device you want to locate. Then, your smartphone will reveal you the exact location of your device on a map. And as you reach close to your device, you can select to either have your device “ring” or locate it using the AR-based Search Nearby function.

Samsung leaves behind Xiaomi to gain top spot in Indian Smartphone Market

Owing to strong sales on online platforms, a research by Counterpoint’s Market Monitor service has revealed that India’s smartphone shipments grew 9 percent YoY to reach over 53 million units in Q3 2020. Samsung overtook Xiaomi to gain the top spot after two years with 32 percent YoY growth during the quarter under review. This strong performance in the pre-COVID levels in Q3 2020 was the result of Samsung’s aggressive push in online channels, with highest ever online contribution within its portfolio.

On the other hand, Xiaomi dropped to second spot for the first time since Q3 2018 with 4 percent YoY decline during the quarter under review. However, Xiaomi will come back strongly in the coming quarter with ramped-up manufacturing, aggressive product strategy and growing offline presence.

The third position was bagged by Vivo with a 4 percent growth YoY in Q3. Mind you! The growth was driven by strong demand for its Y-series models in offline channels. Besides this, Vivo also forayed into the premium market by launching the X50 series along with a gimbal camera in Q3 2020.

In the premium segment (>INR 30,000 ~$400) category, Apple left behind OnePlus owing to strong demand for its iPhone SE 2020 and the iPhone 11. It is likely that the iPhone 12 will further enhance its position in the coming quarter.

As far as affordable premium segment (INR 30,000-INR 45,000 ~ $400-$600) is concerned, OnePlus remained the top brand owing to the sales of OnePlus 8. This handset re-entered the upper mid-tier (Rs 20,000 – Rs 30,000 ~ $270-$400) with its Nord series and the OnePlus Nord became the best-selling model within the segment in the initial quarter of launch.

The smartphone players are now putting more emphasis on online channels due to the COVID-19 situation. Furthermore, offline-centric brands like vivo, OPPO and Itel are increasing their online presence due as more and more consumer are adopting online shopping. The smartphone brands are also trying to leverage new opportunities in offline channels in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities. For eg: Xiaomi launched ‘Mi store on Wheels’. In addition to this, the brands are focusing on affordability by announcing cashbacks, promotions and offers on devices.

The Counterpoint’s Market Monitor service also notified in its research that Indian brands like Micromax and Lava are expected to leverage the government’s ‘Atma-Nirbhar Bharat’ initiative and plan their comeback. Additionally, a Basic Customs Duty (BCD) of 10 percent was introduced on display modules and touch panels. This will be effective from next quarter. It is believed that this move by the Indian government will impact the cost of production since displays are majorly imported. However, it is expected that it will boost the overall handset manufacturing ecosystem and local sourcing contribution in the long run.

Followed by a banning order in India from today PUBG Mobile will shut down all its services and access for Indian users from October 30 that is today. To recall the popular Chinese mobile game was banned in India by the Indian government over cybersecurity concerns on September 2. Both PUBG Mobile and PUBG Mobile Lite along with 116 other Chinese apps we banned from the Play Store in the county. Prior to this, the short video streaming app was also axed by the Government in July for similar reasons.

All of the banned apps were then removed from the Google Play Store and Apple Apps Store in India. But those who have already had them installed on their devices are still able to access the services. Now PUBG Mobile and PUBG Mobile Lite services will not be accessible anymore in the country as the Tencent Games will soon terminate all the services in the country. Tencent took to Facebook to announce the termination of all service and access for users in India to PUBG MOBILE Nordic Map: Livik and PUBG MOBILE Lite from October 30. The Facebook post reads, “Dear Fans, To comply with the interim order of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology dated September 2, 2020, Tencent Games will terminate all service and access for users in India to PUBG MOBILE Nordic Map: Livik and PUBG MOBILE Lite (together, “PUBG Mobile”) on October 30, 2020.”

Furthermore, the company while returning its publishing rights PUBG said, “The rights to publish PUBG MOBILE in India will be returned to the owner of the PUBG intellectual property. Protecting user data has always been a top priority and we have always complied with applicable data protection laws and regulations in India. All users’ gameplay information is processed in a transparent manner as disclosed in our privacy policy. We deeply regret this outcome, and sincerely thank you for your support and love for PUBG MOBILE in India.” However, the latest announcement did not mention that ot will preserve any player data and if yes then where

This development came after PUBG Corporation recently withdrew its partnership with Tencent Games. However, this decision has left its fans disappointed as most of them were expecting that sooner or later the ban might be lifted from PUBG Mobile. So, in effect from October 30, those users in India who were still able to play the game will not be able to access its services.

Google and NASA celebrate 20th anniversary of human life on International Space Station

Google has joined hands with the US space agency NASA to announce celebration of this week’s 20th anniversary of humans living and working on the International Space Station (ISS). This project includes NASA collections, stories, and some new games to help anybody learn more and engage in this important milestone in space exploration.

Permanent human occupancy of the station started on November 2, 2000, when Expedition 1 commander William Shepherd of NASA and Russian cosmonauts Yuri Gidzenko and Sergei Krikalev entered the orbiting laboratory after docking their Soyuz TM-31 spacecraft to the complex. The trio launched October 31, 2000, from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.

Mind you! November 2 will mark 20 years that humans have lived and worked continuously on the space station to test technologies, conduct scientific research, and develop skills needed to explore farther from Earth. It was the time when the new chapter in human space exploration was written as the first crew of permanent astronauts, cosmonauts, and researchers arrived at their new home on the ISS.

According to Simon Delacroix, Program Manager, Google Arts & Culture: “Today, we’re able to look back on all that’s happened, from cutting-edge research to benefit humanity, to building essential foundations for international cooperation on our shared home: Earth.”

Now on Google Arts & Culture, viewers will be able to take a tour of a newly-uploaded 3D model of the ISS in Augmented Reality. It would also make it possible to bring the station back down to Earth and undertake fascinating examinations of each module of the station in incredible detail. Besides this, there is a new multiplayer Puzzle Party experiment to play with friends and family.

Dr Gary Kitmacher, Mission Manager for ISS Communications and Education, helped curate the NASA experiences and provided subject matter expertise to this project. Kitmacher said, “I have dedicated 36 years of my life following and reporting on this incredible human adventure and the amazing achievements of the ISS. Partnering with Google Arts & Culture on this ISS 20th Project enables NASA to bring these stories to a new audience.”

Through this global endeavor of space research, almost 241 people from 19 countries have visited the unique microgravity laboratory that has hosted more than 3,000 research and educational investigations from people in 108 countries and areas, revealed NASA.

Micromax In Series teaser out ahead of the launch

Recently, Micromax co-founder Rahul Sharma announced a comeback in the Indian smartphone market with its new “in” series of smartphones in the country. Since this announcement, the rumours around the device have picked up the speed. The upcoming smartphone series by the Indian smartphone brand is set to launch on November 3 in the country. Other than the launch date the company also teased the presence of MediaTek Helio G35 and Helio G85 SoCs on the upcoming models and now the Micromax In-series smartphone has been revealed by the latest teaser on social media just ahead of its official launch. 

Micromax In-series smartphone design has been teased via a new short teaser that has been shared by the company on its official Twitter account. The new video shows a bluish gradient finish on the back of the phone with an X pattern on the rear. While the in branding is done just about the bottom of the phone.

Recently the company also confirmed that the Micromax In series will come with MediaTek Helio G35 and Helio G85 SoCs. So, the company is aimed to take the budget phone available in the market such as Realme Narzo 20 and Redmi Note 9 that comes with the Helio G85 chipset while Realme C11, Redmi 9 and Poco C3 are powered by Helio G35.

As per a report, the new budget phones by Micromax are expected to come with a 6.5-inch HD+ display and will be powered by new MediaTek chipsets coupled with 3GB of RAM and up to 32GB of onboard storage. The In series is suggested to feature a dual rear camera setup along with a 5,000mAh battery. On the other hand, the one with Helio G85 SoC is likely to sport a triple rear camera set up.

While another report says that Micromax with the launch of its new smartphones under Rs 7,00 and Rs 25,000 price bracket with a nearly stock Android experience.

To recall the new ‘In’ series of smartphones is scheduled to launch in India on November 3. The company will be hosting a virtual launch event that will be live-streamed from 12 noon onwards. According to the Co-founder and CEO of Micromax Rahul Sharma, these smartphones have been manufactured in India and will be free of bloatware and ads.

In what is being regarding a major design overhaul to the Windows 10 user interface (UI), a news report has revealed that Microsoft is planning to introduce changes to top-level user interfaces such as the Start menu, File Explorer as well as Action Center by bringing changes like latest designs, offer enhanced animation and other interesting features.

As per a report by Windows Central, This UI project has been dubbed under codename of “Sun Valley”. It is likely to ship as part of the Windows 10 “Cobalt” during the holiday season next year (2021). This project aims to offer internal documentation describes the project as ‘reinvigorating’ and ‘modernizing’ the Windows desktop experience to keep up with customer expectation in a world driven by other modern and lightweight platforms.

Microsoft has also introduced Windows 10 October 2020 Update for its customers as a free update. Some of the new features include the fan favorite shortcut Alt + Tab which now lets you access your Microsoft Edge tabs, a streamlined design for the Start menu and more.

According to the tech giant, With this update you also get these new, exclusive to Windows 10 features for Microsoft Edge:

  • Alt + Tab = The quick way to access your apps and web tabs. With this handy keyboard shortcut not only can you easily access the apps you have open on your desktop, but now you can also access your open tabs in Microsoft Edge.
  • All the tabs you were looking for. If you’re someone who likes the convenience of pinning your favorite websites to the taskbar, you’re going to love this new feature. Now when you hover over the website icon, you’ll see all the open tabs of that site.

Under the Windows 10 October 2020 Update, Microsoft has also offered refreshing updates from the Start menu to the Taskbar and more. The Start menu has a more streamlined design. A uniform, partially transparent background to the tiles creates a beautiful stage for the redesigned app icons like Calculator, Mail and Calendar.

As per Microsoft, “This refined Start design looks great in both dark and light themes, but if you’re looking for a splash of color, first make sure to turn on Windows dark theme and then toggle “Show accent color on the following surfaces” for “Start, taskbar, and action center” under Settings > Personalization > Color to elegantly apply your accent color to the Start frame and tiles.”

Also, now when you go to Settings > System > Display, Advanced display settings, you can change the refresh rate of your display as a higher refresh rate allows for smoother motion of visuals, and depending on what kind of display or monitor you have, you may be able to really crank it up—makes for a great gaming experience.

Samsung regained top spot in the Indian smartphone market: Counterpoint research report

The South Korean smartphone brand Samsung now led the Indian smartphone market according to the Counterpoint research report. In the Q3 of 2020, the market recorded 53 million units in the September quarter while Samsung recaptured the top spot and was closely followed by the Chinese smartphone brand Xiaomi.

According to a report by Counterpoint’s Market Monitor service report Samsung has recovered in India while touching the highest market share in India since 2018 by adopting an aggressive online channel strategy to benefit from opportunities arising due to anti-China sentiments in the country. The company also took the top spot in the global smartphone market in August, accounting for 22% of the market share.

In April this year, Samsung lost its top posting to Huawei due to sharp declines in its major markets of India and Europe. The smartphone market declined 51% YoY in Q2 2020 as April was a washout.

The anti-China controversy also helped the company to recover from the nationwide lockdown. As per the report Huawei has achieved its highest global share of 21% in April, Huawei’s market share is expected to fall further in the future due to US trade sanctions.

The Indian smartphone market has shown a growth of 9 percent year-on-year to reach over 53 million units in the July-September 2020 quarter which is said to be the highest-ever shipment in a quarter for the Indian smartphone market. After two years Samsung became the top smartphone brand in India with 32% YoY growth.

Commenting on the market dynamics, Senior Research Analyst Prachir Singh said, “The Indian smartphone market is on a recovery path as the lockdown restrictions have been relaxed. The market has shown consistent growth for the last few months. It saw strong demand during the Independence Day period in August as major online platforms hosted massive sales. September has always been a high sell-in month as brands prepare for the upcoming festive season and push stock in the channels. Almost all the brands recorded growth compared to the last year. In terms of price bands, the mid-tier (INR 10,000 – INR 20,000) segment registered the highest growth and reached its highest ever share in a quarter. Due to the pandemic, Indian consumers have ended up saving on leisure activities. These savings are now being funneled into smartphone purchases. Additionally, smartphones have become an integral part of consumers’ lifestyles in this changing environment.”

This is possible due to the higher demand in the smartphone segment and stronger sales of feature phones. While the feature phone market registered a 5% YoY growth in Q3 2020 with Itel being the number one brand followed by Samsung and Lava. As per the report, the focus on online channels has been increasing due to the COVID-19 situation while brands such as Vivo, OPPO and Itel are increasing their online presence due to the changing consumer behaviour.

While Xiaomi has fallen to the second position with a 4% YoY decline. The reason behind the decline is first the manufacturing constraints due to the COVID-19 that eventually affected its supply chain. While Vivo reserved the third position at the same time showing 4 percent YoY growth in Q3 2020 driven by strong demand for its Y-series models in offline channels. Followed by Realme with 4 percent YoY with 15 percent market share Oppo with 10 percent and other brands with 12 percent.

While on the other hand, Apple leads the premium smartphone segment over the Rs 30,000 market surpassing OnePlus even before its flagship launch, driven by strong demand for its iPhone SE 2020 and the iPhone 11. Whereas OnePlus persisted as the top brand in the affordable premium segment in the Rs 30,000 to Rs 45,000 price segment driven by OnePlus 8 sales.

AMD launches Next-Generation PC Gaming with AMD Radeon RX 6000 Series

AMD launched the AMD Radeon RX 6000 Series graphics cards, delivering powerhouse performance, incredibly life-like visuals, and must-have features that set a new standard for enthusiast-class PC gaming experiences. Moreover, AMD RDNA 2 leverages high-speed design methodologies to provide up to a 30 percent frequency boost at the same power level. It also comprises of new AMD Infinity Cache technology that offers up to 2.4X greater bandwidth-per-watt compared to GDDR6-only AMD RDNA-based architectural designs.

Looking at the other specification, AMD Radeon RX 6000 Series graphics cards enables high-bandwidth PCIe 4.0 technology and features 16GB of GDDR6 memory to power the most demanding 4K workloads today and in the future. It also supports AMD Smart Access Memory, which is an exclusive feature of systems with AMD Ryzen 5000 Series processors, AMD B550 and X570 motherboards and Radeon RX 6000 Series graphics cards. As far as pricing and availability is concerned, AMD Radeon RX 6800 and Radeon RX 6800 XT graphics cards are expected to be available from global etailers/retailers and on AMD.com starting November 18, 2020, for $579 and $649, respectively. The AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT is expected to be available on December 8, 2020 for $999. On the other hand, AMD Radeon RX 6800 and RX 6800 XT graphics cards are also expected to be available from AMD board partners, including ASRock, ASUS, Gigabyte, MSI, PowerColor, SAPPHIRE and XFX, beginning in November 2020.

Realme C15 Qualcomm Edition launched in India

The Chinese smartphone company Realme has introduced its new smartphone in the Indian market. The Company has launched Realme C15 Qualcomm Edition. To recall in August this year the company introduced the same smartphone but with a MediaTek processor. But the new variant is powered by a Qualcomm chipset while the specifications remain the same as the earlier one. The only difference between both variants is the processor. The latest Realme C15 Qualcomm Edition is powered by Snapdragon 460 SoC with a 6,000mAh battery, reverse charging support and a waterdrop-style notch display.

Realme C15 Qualcomm Edition specifications

Realme C15 Qualcomm Edition runs on Realme UI based on Android 10. It features a 6.5-inch HD+ display with 720×1,600 pixels of resolution, a 20:9 aspect ratio and an 88.7 percent screen-to-body ratio. The phone is powered by an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 460 SoC with up to 4GB LPDDR4x RAM and up to 64GB of storage that can be expanded up to 256GB using a microSD card.

The device comes with a quad rear camera set up that includes a 13-megapixel primary sensor with an f/2.2 aperture. Along with an 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens with 119 degrees of field of view and f/2.25 aperture. Further assisted by a 2-megapixel monochrome sensor with an f/2.4 aperture and a 2-megapixel retro lens with f/2.4 aperture. Upfront there is an 8-megapixel selfie camera.

In terms of connectivity, there is 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth v5.0, GPS/ A-GPS, and a Micro-USB port. At the same time, the sensors on the phone include an accelerometer, ambient light sensor, magnetometer, a proximity sensor and a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor. The device houses a massive 6,000mAh battery with 18W fast charging support.

Realme C15 Qualcomm Edition price and availability details

Realme C15 Qualcomm Edition price in India has been set at Rs 9,999 for the base 3GB RAM with a 32GB storage variant. While the 4GB RAM with 64GB storage is priced at Rs 10,999 in India. But the Qualcomm variant will be available at an introductory price of Rs 9,499 for the base model and at Rs 10,499 for the 4GB version. The device will be offered in two colour options Power Blue and Power Silver. The device is now up for sale via Flipkart Realme.com, and other stores in the country.
