Vivo X50 review: The outstanding mid-ranger

The Vivo X50 was launched recently in India at a starting price of Rs 34,990. The smartphone comes with a number of cool features like a quad-camera setup, a 48MP primary sensor and a massive 6.5-inch display that has support for HDR10+. The handset sounded great on paper and we couldn’t wait to get our hands on it. We spent more than a week with the device and here’s our Vivo X50 review:

Vivo X50 design and display

In terms of the design, Vivo X50 surely impresses. The smartphone is very good to look at and comes with a sturdy built and a premium form factor. The back panel of the Vivo X50 is frosted and it houses the camera panel, the LED flash and sports Vivo‘s branding. We really liked the fact that the matte finish of the back panel us such that it doesn’t catch fingerprints too easily. The device is available in two colour options: Frost Blue and Glaze Black. We got the former one for the review and we think it looked splendid. Vivo X50 review The handset has a metallic frame on its edges and while the right one has the volume rocker keys and the power button sandwiched on it, the secondary microphone is on the top and the SIM tray, primary microphone, Type-C port and speaker grille are on the bottom. Flip the device over and you will be greeted by its 6.56-inch Full HD+ AMOLED display that has a refresh rate of 90Hz and comes with HDR10+ certification. The screen is outlined by very thin bezels on all four sides, and this adds to the premium looks of the device. The display also has a hole-punch cut-out selfie camera on the top left and a fingerprint scanner is embedded towards the bottom. Vivo X50 review image The display is undoubtedly one of the best aspects of the smartphone. The colours projected are bright and vibrant and they remained consistent at different viewing angles. The images were sharp and clear at all times and it was a delight to play games and watch content from YouTube on it. The sunlight readability of the smartphone’s display was decent too. To put it in a nutshell, the design as well as the display of Vivo X50 are definitely among its pros and were both very impressive. The phone is beautiful to look at and the display is a treat to the eye.

Vivo X50 performance and camera

Moving on, let’s talk about the performance of Vivo X50. But before we do that, let’s take a minute to take a look at the rest of its specifications. Vivo X50 is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 730 SoC clubbed with 8GB of RAM. The smartphone is available in two storage options – 128GB and 256GB. The device runs Android 10 skinned with Funtouch OS 10.5 and it houses a 4,200mAh battery. The charger in the box comes with support for the company’s 33W FlashCharge technology. For imaging duties, there is a 48MP primary camera, an 8MP ultra-wide sensor, a 13MP portrait lens and a 5MP macro lens. Vivo X50 2 The customised-Android skin of the smartphone comes with a number of customizations. First and foremost, there is bloatware on the device. You’ll find some apps like Angry Birds, PhonePe and Facebook, and a number of others that are Vivo’s own. We should mention that Vivo’s own app cannot be uninstalled from the smartphone. There are a number of app shortcuts and the device comes with a Digital Wellbeing feature as well. You also have the option of customizing the lighting effects for call or other notifications in the Settings section. Vivo X50 3 Moving further, the performance of Vivo X50 is really good. The biometric locks of the device work very smoothly and any function that you may wish to perform happens instantly thanks to the processor and the display with such a good refresh rate. There were times when we multitasked a lot on the handset, but did not face a problem even once. Gaming on the smartphone is another aspect that got us all happy and excited inside. We played a lot of Asphalt 9: Legends and Call of Duty and the device handled them both very well. There is a Game Space app on the device that can be used to keep all the games in one place. Using this can also help you block incoming calls when you are playing a game and it locks the brightness of the display. You can also use it to record your screen while gaming. Even after prolonged gaming sessions, Vivo X50 did not heat up, and we think that’s definitely a pro. The 4,200mAh battery of the smartphone easily lasts more than a day even with heavy usage that involves gaming, long phone calls, a lot of video recording, watching content on YouTube and using social media apps. With moderate usage, the device will easily last two days. Using the bundled charger, the battery of the smartphone can be charged completely within an hour.

Now, let’s speak about the cameras of Vivo X50. As we mentioned earlier, the device comes with a set of four camera sensors. The 48MP primary Sony IMX598 sensor comes with optical image stabilisation. The quality of the images taken from this lens is very amazing. The pictures capture a great number of details and the colours are vibrant and bright. You even have the option of turning on the AI scene recognition, particularly if you like images with slightly saturated colours. During the day, all the images taken were great, but in the ones taken in lowly lit areas or at night, we did observe some level of noise. However, if you enable the Night Mode, the problem gets fixed instantly.

The 8MP ultra-wide camera also does a good job in daylight. The details captured and the colours are both good, however, that’s only the case during the day. At night, the details deteriorate and the images get grainy. Plus, the Night Mode doesn’t help too much in the case of the ultra-wide camera.

Coming to the 13MP portrait lens, you can get an extremely zoomed-in view of the subject you wish to click. What’s better, users have the option of making edits before taking the shot. Most of the pictures that we clicked using this camera lens turned out to be great. We even clicked some images using the 5MP Macro lens of the smartphone and that too did a great job as we could capture even the very tiny details of the object being captured.

Even the 32MP selfie camera of the device works very well and we managed to get some very good selfies using it. However, the problem of the pictures not being good in lowly-lit conditions persisted. Plus, the Night Mode didn’t manage to do its wonders with this camera lens too.

Verdict

There is no reason for us to discourage you from buying the Vivo X50 as the device proved itself to be good in most categories. It has a beautiful design, a vibrant display, a lasting battery and decent cameras (we call them decent only because of the performance at night). But we should mention that in this price range, you can also buy offerings from OnePlus that pack a better processor. However, that should only affect you if you are a lot into gaming because Vivo X50 handles all major tasks very well. Pros
  • Vibrant display
  • Beautiful design
  • Lasting battery
Cons
  • Dated processor
  • Inconsistent camera performance

Vanish Mode Lastly, the Vanish Mode which is an opt-in feature that makes seen messages disappear after you leave a chat thread will also be available soon on both platforms. For privacy and security, this feature will only work for the people you’re connected to in a chat. If someone takes a screenshot of your chat while you’re using vanish mode, you’ll be notified. You can send memes, GIFs or reactions without it staying in your chat history. To enable this feature just swipe up in an existing chat thread – and you’re in vanish mode. It has now lifted curtains off all the adopted ideas of IDEAS 2.0 that would be seen in future Oxygen OS builds. According to OnePlus, “We will invite users who won Adopted Ideas award to join in the co-creation process with our product team from developing on the idea to locking down detailed requirements, from prototype to verification. Troubleshooting tips to have Android Auto working again

The tech giant Google not only offers Android operating software for the smartphone but it also offers a similar experience for automobiles. Android Auto app is one of such company’s products that help you connect your phone to your car’s display in a format that makes it easy for you to keep your main focus on driving. This app was launched more than a year ago and grabbed a lot of attention then because of its UI and capabilities. But then for some using the app has become a nightmare as many times it stops working and especially for the Audi drivers. As of now, there is no ETA available but one of the company’s executives has responded to the issues on the new Android Auto version explaining that the company is now working on a fix. Till the company finds out a fix you can try out some of these Android Auto troubleshooting tips that will help you fix this issue. Using the Android Auto app you can control features like navigation and maps, calls and text messages, and music. You can also use your voice to get help with your day. You can find routes, play your favourite songs and even check the weather. Just say “Hey Google” to get started. But if it isn’t working properly on your smartphone or car’s display then you can try some of our troubleshooting tips to make it work right.

How to troubleshoot Android Auto:

  • At any point of time, if Android Auto fails this might be because of a momentary fault within the app. SO in this case always restart your phone or else shut down or power off. Turn on your phone after a few minutes and launch Android Auto again to check if it’s working right.
  • If this doesn’t help then try updating your phone as well as the app as this will fix voice command issues. You can do this by heading to Settings on your device and check for Android updates. If any update is available then go for it. On updating your device go to the application and if Android Auto is in the list and then tap to update. In addition to the auto app, we would also recommend you to update other Google apps as well.
  • Check if your phone is compatible with the app or not. According to the company if you have Android 9 or below, get the Android Auto app on your phone. With Android 10, Android Auto is built in – so you don’t need the app to get started.
  • Also, check if the Android Auto app works in your country. Here in India, the app supports cars from the US, UK, Canada, Australia and more.
  • Do check that your car or stereo is compatible with Android Auto. Although the app is supported by more than 500 models, you can click here to check compatibility.
  • Also, try troubleshooting your car’s infotainment system. Check if you are opening an Android Auto app from the main menu. In case you don’t know how to restart the system then you can try switching off your cars for some time and then start it again.
  • Make an attempt to connect your phone to your vehicle using a USB cable while using the app on your vehicles’ display. Also, make sure your USB cable has support for data transfer as the app also doesn’t work if the cable is for charging purposes only.
  • Opening this option will slide out a list of approved and rejected cars. If accidentally it is in the rejected cars list then unblock it by removing this from the list and try pairing it again. But Check if the Add new cars to Android Auto option is enabled and then visit your Android Auto vehicle settings and then tap Previously connected cars. If this also doesn’t work then tap on the Menu and hit Forget all cars. Doing this will remove all the paired cars and you can again start fresh.
  • If none of the above works then clear cache and storage in the Android Auto app and start again while the app is not connected to your car. Go to Settings > Apps & notifications > See all X apps > Android Auto > Storage & cache.

How to turn on or off WhatsApp Disappearing messages feature on your smartphone

WhatsApp has officially announced the rollout of one of its much-awaited Disappearing Messages feature on its platform. This feature will allow the users to automatically delete a sent message after seven days, including any media sent. With the introduction of this feature your previously sent or received messages or any of the content will not be affected in the chat. This feature can be easily turned on or off for a particular chat or a group. If you are unaware of the WhatsApp disappearing messages feature then here our step-by-step guide to enable or disable this feature on your smartphone.

How to enable or disable disappearing messages on your device?

  • Open the WhatsApp chat.
  • Tap the contact’s name.
  • Tap Disappearing messages. Tap CONTINUE.
  • Select ON.
  • And to turn the feature off go on the contacts’ name
  • Tap disappearing messages
  • Continue and select off
In a similar way, this feature can be disabled or enabled in a group chat as well but only group admins can turn disappearing messages on or off. As we said earlier this setting won’t affect messages you previously sent or received in the chat.  On turning this feature, the sent media, content, or message will disappear in the seven-day period. It should be noted the message will still disappear if the user doesn’t open WhatsApp in this set period however the preview of the message might still be displayed in notifications until WhatsApp is opened. In addition to this If a disappearing message is forwarded to a chat with disappearing messages off, the message won’t disappear in the forwarded chat. Also, if you create a backup before a message disappears, the disappearing message will be contained within the backup. The messages will be erased when a user reinstates from a backup. So one can possibly forward or take a screenshot of a disappearing message and save it before it disappears. Also, you can save and copy the media content or take a photo of the disappearing message and save it before it disappears from your device. Apple reduces App Store commission rate to 15 percent to support smaller developers

0
Apple has lifted curtains off a new App Store Small Business Program that aims benefit the vast majority of developers who sell digital goods and services on the store. Under this program, Apple will provide the developers with a reduced 15 percent commission on paid apps and in-app purchases if they earned up to $1 million in proceeds during the previous calendar year. Mind you! The App Store Small Business Program will launch on January 1, 2021. During a period of unprecedented global economic challenge, apps have taken on new importance as many small businesses have built on their digital presence to reach their customers and communities. The program’s reduced commission means small developers and aspiring entrepreneurs will have more resources to invest in and grow their businesses in Apple’s App Store ecosystem. Stating that small businesses are the backbone of the global economy and the beating heart of innovation and opportunity in communities around the world, Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, said, “We’re launching this program to help small business owners write the next chapter of creativity and prosperity on the App Store, and to build the kind of quality apps our customers love. The App Store has been an engine of economic growth like none other, creating millions of new jobs and a pathway to entrepreneurship accessible to anyone with a great idea. Our new program carries that progress forward — helping developers fund their small businesses, take risks on new ideas, expand their teams, and continue to make apps that enrich people’s lives.” Apple further highlighted that the comprehensive details will be released in early December. Meanwhile, the App Store’s standard commission rate of 30 percent remains in place for apps selling digital goods and services and making more than $1 million in proceeds, defined as a developer’s post-commission earnings. Additionally, small business owners will continue to benefit from Apple’s unparalleled suite of developer tools — including development applications, programming languages, a secure payment interface, and more than 250,000 essential software building blocks called APIs. It was further added that the developers of all sizes have built successful businesses while benefitting from the App Store’s global reach encompassing users of the more than 1.5 billion Apple devices around the world in 175 countries and over 40 languages, with more than 180 local payment methods and 45 accepted currencies. Apple concluded by adding that the new App Store Small Business Program will build on that progress to generate even more digital commerce and app innovations, support new jobs, and help small and independent developers continue to introducing amazing software to its users. Is the iPhone 12 the best smartphone for gaming?

Apple has always been at the forefront of innovations in the smartphone market, ever since it released the original iPhone in 2007. That trend looks set to continue, with the iPhone 12 already making waves after its October release. The 14th generation of iPhone has undergone a few notable upgrades in its specifications, meaning that its gaming capabilities are much higher than its predecessors. For this reason, the 2020 offering could be set to once again change the face of the smartphone industry. Indeed, it could bring about a major shift in the way people play mobile games.

The Specs

Buyers of the iPhone 12 can choose between the standard iPhone storage options of 64 GB, 128 GB, and 256 GB. The new phones use the six-core Apple A14 Bionic processor, which is the brand new version of the central processing unit. The company claims that this runs up to 40 percent faster than the A12 version and 13 percent faster than the A14’s predecessor, the A13. It contains a next-generation neural engine, two Firestorm cores for high performance, and four Icestorm cores that are energy efficient. These enhanced specifications will vastly improve the smartphone’s capabilities. In addition to performance, the display will be crisper and clearer than ever before. It uses Super Retina XDR OLED technology, a higher quality option that has been talked up for some time. In terms of resolution, the iPhone 12 offers 2532×1170 pixels with 460 ppi pixel density. One aspect that may be appealing to gamers who are at risk of dropping the phone on a regular basis is the Ceramic Shield. This glass-ceramic covering that was developed in collaboration with Corning Inc. makes the iPhone 12 tougher than any other smartphone and four times more likely to survive a drop.

What Does This Mean For the Gaming Market?

There is no doubt that the advanced specifications on Apple’s latest device will have a huge impact on the mobile gaming industry. In the early days of smartphones, simple, pick-up-and-play offerings reigned supreme because they loaded quickly and didn’t require state-of-the-art technology to work. But now that phones are capable of so much more, this could be set to change. Of course, some games will still enjoy massive playing figures on the mobile screen. Casino titles, for instance, entered the latest phase of their evolution on mobile and this is now the preferred platform for online casino players. Some of the top Vegas online slots, such as Book of Dead, Monopoly Big Event, and Spartacus: Gladiator of Rome look much better when played from the smaller screen as the picture quality is more refined. Developers create new slots with mobile players in mind, and portable devices are one of their main considerations. One of the most notable things about the iPhone 12 is its ability to play console-level games. Anyone who purchases the iPhone 12 series will be granted three months of access to Apple’s online gaming platform and Google Stadia rival, Apple Arcade. Because mobile players will now be able to play advanced games like Team Sonic Racing, The Pathless, and Dread Nautical, other mobile developers may look into how they can also offer a more advanced game library. There is no denying that the iPhone 12 has some seriously powerful capabilities and could be about to change the mobile gaming scene. The biggest development could be the introduction of Apple Arcade, which will bring a console-style gaming experience to the portable phone. In order to help people feel more comfortable, Twitter has been constantly working on a lower pressure way for people to talk about what’s happening. The microblogging site has now introduced Fleets so that Twitter users can easily join the conversation in a new way – with their fleeting thoughts. According to Twitter, “Fleets are for sharing momentary thoughts – they help start conversations and only stick around for 24 hours. Through our tests in Brazil, Italy, India, and South Korea, we learned Fleets helped people feel more comfortable joining the conversation – we saw people with Fleets talk more on Twitter.” Mind you! Twitter’s Fleets disappear from view after a day. This new feature will help people feel more comfortable sharing personal and casual thoughts, opinions, and feelings. The users can Fleet text, reactions to Tweets, photos or videos and customize your Fleets with various background and text options. 2. Now, click on “Share in Fleet”
  3. Add what you think about it with some text or emojis
  4. Soon, stickers and live broadcasting will be available in Fleets
It was further notified that the followers of your Twitter account can see your Fleets at the top of their home timeline. Fleets can be viewed by the ones who can see the full Twitter profile. Twitterati can even reply to the Fleets if the profile owner has enabled Direct Messages. The following steps need to be followed if one wants to reply to a Fleet:

  • Continue the conversation in your Direct Messages
Twitter mentioned that its users across the globe will have access to Fleets on the microblogging site’s iOS as well as Android platforms. Earlier, Twitter has added pinned tweets and descriptions on trends to make it easier to understand. According to the microblogging platform, some trends will have a representative Tweet pinned to them to give you more insight about a trend right away. Representative tweets on trends can be found on Twitter for iOS and Android now. Twitter is also working to bring them to twitter.com soon too. An official blog post by Twitter has revealed that a combination of algorithms and curation team determine if a tweet represents a trend by evaluating if the tweet is very reflective of the trend and popular. Twitter further added that algorithms are designed to identify representative tweets that aren’t potentially abusive, spam, or posted by accounts trying to take advantage of its system. Twitter further added that in the weeks ahead, a user should see brief descriptions added to some trends as well to help add context to the trend. Descriptions will provide straightforward, clearly sourced context around why something is trending. Descriptions are developed by its curation team and follow their guidelines. Descriptions on trends will be found on twitter.com and Twitter for iOS and Android.
